Crucial Ram

Hello all,
I am in need of a ram upgrade. I followed some links to a website called crucial.com. Is this place good to buy Ram from, anybody know? I downloaded their scanning application and it came up with the recommended ram for my machine. I was also wondering if I can trust the results of the scan.
Right now, I have 2x1GB. I want to upgrade to either 3GB or 4GB. I have read all over the web and I still don't understand if there is any advantage to having 2x2GB if my machine only supports 3GB. Crucial says
"Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.Maximum memory is reached by using one 2GB SODIMM and one 1GB SODIMM."
So, does that mean that I need to buy both stick from them? Or can I just buy the 2GB from them and use my existing 1GB?
My current ram is
Size: 1 GB
Type: DDR2 SDRAM
Speed: 667 MHz
Status: OK
Manufacturer: 0xAD00000000000000
Part Number: 0x48594D503531325336344350382D59352020
Serial Number: 0x00002017
crucial is trying to sell me
2GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module
CT613265
* Module Size: 2GB
* Package: 200-pin SODIMM
* Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300
* Specs: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64
Any advice would be appreciated, I am kind of getting confused the more I read on this! Thanks!

It would help to know exactly what MBP model you have. Different variants of the MacBook Pro have different possible RAM configs. Some are limited to 2 x 1G; others may be able to use a 2G plus a 1G, or 2 X 2G or higher. Use System Profler to look at "Hardware overview"; post the line that says "Machine Model." That will precisely ID your machine and its RAM possibilities.
Although they have a decent reputation, what I don't like about Crucial is that they don't update their offerings when newer and larger compatible RAM sticks become available. As a result, I buy RAM from only two very Mac-savvy vendors:
Other World Computing
and
data Memory Systems
Both have very accurate RAM Config data, excellent pricing and Mac-friendly customer service.

  • G5 crashes after installation of Crucial RAM

I recently upgraded my RAM from its original 512 MB to 2G with modules from Crucial. The first pair I received did not work when installed together although they appeared to work individually in each slot separately. I sent them back to Crucial and they sent me another "build." Installed the second pair and the computer worked fine for 10 days. Now the fan surges, applications and the system crash continually making the machine very frustrating to work with. Genius at the Apple store said it's one of the following: bad RAM, failing HD or failing motherboard (I did not take the machine in to the store for examination). I've run the disk utilities from the start up disk successfully and repaired minor issues on the HD. Are my next steps to go back and test each memory module in each slot, one by one, to see what happens? If it's a problem with the RAM, why did it work fine for 10 days and then start causing problems? I hate to revert to 512 MB RAM but the crashing 2 GB is making me nuts! Are there any better suppliers of RAM than Crucial? Any insight would be appreciated.

I finally gave up on the Crucial RAM and put the original equipment 512 MG module back in. Now that doesn't work in either slot. The machine will not even start up with the 512 MG RAM in. I took the 512 MG out, put one Crucial 1 GB module back in. Sometimes the machine starts up, sometimes it doesn't. If it does start, it's incredibly unstable and will crash retrieving mail in Mail or starting up Firefox.
What has happened to my G5 now? Why will it not run with its original chip? Have I somehow damaged the RAM slots by putting in/taking out RAM? (I've been so careful.) I've been without my computer now for over a week and have no other ideas how to troubleshoot. Do I have to spend many $$ at the Apple store to fix this 6 year old machine? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've used Apple computers for 20 years and have never been afraid of my machine before. Now my hands are tied and I can't use it.

  • MacBook 2.2 GHz (late 2007, SR) and 4 GB CRUCIAL RAM

I got two sticks of RAM from CRUCIAL, and I cannot use both at the same time. The MacBook will boot with one Apple OEM and one Crucial stick, and it is happy (crucial RAM works), but as soon as I take the Apple stick out, the MacBook will not boot up. I tried various combinations of slots, sticks, no way.
Searching I discovered this is a problem only with CRUCIAL Ram, seems like other brands are working OK. Apparently Crucial is aware and they exchange the RAM, but I am not sure if I want to take a chance or just send it back to buy.com

Anyone knows what's going on? is Apple going to release a firmware update? or is Crucial RAM just not so good as they claim?

First, this isn't a compatibility issue. The problem is that the OP has RAM that doesn't work, Crucial has acknowledged it's a known problem with their product, and has offered to replace the bad RAM. How is this a compatibility problem? How is this a problem for Apple? How is this an appropriate technical problem for the forums?
Of course it's a compatibility issue. It's not much different than if I posted a question asking why my Simpletech Pininfarina drive doesn't work on my MacBook with a single plug (doesn't supply enough power), or why doesn't my PC2-6400 memory module work (that's still a mystery). I think the OP simply want to understand a technical reason why it may or may not work.
I'll just say for the OP that if there's any reason why it works in certain configurations or doesn't, it isn't likely to be an issue that gets fixed in firmware. I think it would be helpful if maybe the part number of the modules were given, and if they were PC2-6400 (DDR2-800). I've heard of some strange issues where people tried using 2GB PC2-6400 modules, and they worked singly, along with an OEM 512MB PC2-5300 module, but not with both 2GB PC-6400 modules together.
I think you need to review the Terms of Use along with the OP.
I did last night before I replied, and did so again. Can't find anything that suggests the original topic violates the terms of the Apple Discussions Use Agreement. The OP is trying to use a MacBook more effectively, which is perfectly on point.

  • Should I go with CRUCIAL Ram?

    Hi guys!
I was wondering if it's safe to upgrade my iMac using *CRUCIAL Ram*... my old G5 came with 1GB from Apple and I bought another 1GB from CRUCIAL and *NEVER had any problem!*
Of course I know I have to pick the correct model for my iMac, but the company makes it easy as they have a drop-down box where I can select my iMac.
I know that things change, that's why I would like to know if it's still ok to go with CRUCIAL without any harm...
Apple sells 1GB for $100, *we can get 2GB for $51* buying at CRUCIAL. It'd save me a lot of money...
And with new models we don't even have to open the iMac any more...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Probably I'll go with 2GB and keep the 1GB that came with.
But before having my iMac G5 17 inches replaced by the new 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac 20 inches, due to *three bad screens replaced* and *2 Supper Drives with problems as well*, a month struggling, calling Apple... etc... Apple never complained about seeing my Crucial Ram inside my iMac during repair. I used to have *1GB from Apple* and another *1GB from Crucial*. It's never been an issue...
    I hope it's still true!
    Thanks for all responses...

  • Crucial RAM causes reboot when waking from sleep

I bought my 2GHz iMac core duo with 1GB RAM already installed and bought another 1GB from Crucial using their "memory advisor tool".
Installed the RAM fine and have had ongoing intermittent problems with reboots after waking from sleep - stopped when I removed the crucial RAM. Crucial were good enough to RMA the RAM and the replacement module...........does exactly the same!
    Do I now -
    a) Buy only Apple store RAM which is 3 times more expensive?
    or
    b) Ask Apple to fix a faulty mainboard
Unlikely I got two faulty RAM modules I think.

    Simon,
I agree that it seems unlikely that Crucial would ship you two faulty modules, but I suggest that you test the theory before taking your iMac in for service. Try removing both modules, and placing the Crucial module in the slot in which the Apple module was located, and then see how your iMac functions. If everything is fine, place the Apple module in the second slot, and see how your iMac functions. If the problem returns, it would seem likely that the slot is bad, versus the module, and therefore would justify taking the iMac in for repair.

  • Crucial rams stopped working after installing Bios 2.56

I have problem installing my crucial rams in my w530 lenovo after updating bios to 2.56. it was working before the update but for some reason it didn't work after and i can't even see the bios menu.
    my 2 ram is CT51264BC1067.M16FD (4gb 204-pin sodimm 512x64 ddr)
I tired all sort of combination between slots (i have 4) and nothing. so i thought the problem maybe with the rams so i placed them into my other computer (HP pavilion dv6) and they work fine so it must be in the updated bios.
i posted this on w530 with the orginal 4gb samsung ram that i got with the laptop plus i found that my HP has also the same brand ram that comes with w530 (samsung) and they works fine so its the problem is not in the rams slots or hardware. is there away to downgrade the bios or make recongize my rams?? thank you

  • Starting issues with iMac 27 i5 quad after crucial RAM expansion

I have read through a few threads regarding issues with crucial RAM upgrades in iMacs but they don't quite match what I am experiencing.
I have installed 2 x 2 GB Crucial RAM (manufacturer 0x80CE) in addition to the pre-installed 4GB. The iMac works fine without any glitches, freezes or crashes. However, when I try to start it up in the morning I can hear the HD starting up and stopping once. The start chime doesn't sound and the display stays black. I take out the 4GB and the computer starts up without any problems. I then switch it off again, install the other 2 RAM again and lo and behold: all works fine. Until the next morning. I do not entirely disconnect the iMac, which is an Apple refurbished machine, I just switch it off.
The first time that happened, I thought it was another problem like USB, bluetooth etc. So I systematically disconnected and reconnected all peripherals, I even used a USB mouse and keyboard and tried to start up from the restore DVD. So I went through all that pain.
If there is an existing thread I would appreciate if you could point me in the right direction because I couldn't find anything like this on this forum.

Did you test all 4 modules one at time in a top slot as suggested, to see if they are all working?
    ● If any one of the modules fail to properly boot the iMac, factory or crucial then do not reinstall it into the iMac.
    ● If all of the modules individually boot the iMac, then try reinstalling the Crucial in the top slots, the factory in the bottom slots and Startup the iMac reseting the PRAM.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
+1. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.+
    +2. Turn on the computer.+
+3. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.+
+4. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.+
    +5. Release the keys.+
Now then if the iMac is not booting from all 8GB of RAM, then there is a compatibility problem with the Crucial RAM and you need to contact Crucial and tell them that there Ram is not working with your Factory RAM.
Why would you only want RAM in the bottom slots, I thought the idea here was to upgrade from 4 to 8GB?
The article clearly states that the iMac will not boot with only 1 module in a bottom slot.

  • Upgrading Ram Macbook Pro 2012 13"Crucial RAM

    Hello,
I am looking at buying Crucial ram for my 2012 Macbook Pro 13". At the moment it is 4gb and I want to upgrade to 8. I am looking at the crucial ram as it is much cheaper than the Apple ram. Is there any disadvatage in this? Or is it better to stick with Apple?
    Thanks

I always buy Crucial: I've put their RAM in at least 12 Macs and never once had any problems.
I have 16 GB of theirs in my 2012 MacBook Pro.
The only disadvantage to not using Apple's RAM is that Apple will blame the third-party RAM if you get a hardware fault. So keep hold of your old RAM so that you can replace it for testing purposes, if needed.

  • Does DDR2 PC2-5300 Crucial RAM work fine on my Nov'05 Powerbook G4 15"

I have the late October 05 Powerbook G4 1.67Ghz (in fact mine is from November based on my serial number). Basically the latest Powerbook G4 15" model and System Profiler shows - "Machine Model: PowerBook5,8"
I want to upgrade memory and used the CrucialSystemScanner and it showed me that the following DDR2 PC2-5300 models are compatible with my Powerbook -
    # CT492863 : http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=3AE0BC8CA5CA7304
    # CT540990 : http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=F0662B93A5CA7304
But my "Powerbook G4 15inch User guide" tells me that the RAM spec is - "PC2-4200 DDR2 533 MHz Type RAM"
So will any of these work fine with my powerbook ? since Crucial shows its PC2-5300?
Is anybody having any of the above RAM sticks on a similar Powerbook G4 15" (late october 05 model) ?
I plan to buy the CT540990 (2GB kit).
Also anybody seen any kernel panics/airport related issues (when used memory > 1GB) with this Crucial RAM sticks ?
    Thanks much for your response.

I'll tell you, in my personal experience with Mac, I only use Crucial memory but I recommend only Crucial or OWC (macsales). Other manufactures are prone to the kernel panics you mention. Crucial will guarantee that the memory works in your Mac, if it's listed as such on their site. I believe that they'll give you full money back if not.
But don't take my word for it check for yourself. Click on one of the links that you posted and on the right side of the web page you'll see the live chat button. This works great, they'll answer any questions. Be clear when you ask what guarantee do you have that the memory will work.
Now the 5300 will probably be kicked down to the appropriate memory bus speed but the memory will work.

  • Kn420Pro & Crucial RAM 333 Mhz

I was quite happily using my Kn420Pro with 2x128mb of Kingston.
I then ordered 2x256mb of 333Mhz of Crucial RAM and removed the old stuff and replaced it.
Windows XP booted fine, but then I got lots of "Delayed Write Failed" errors and the OS basically locked up shortly after. Thinking the RAM was dodgy, I tried each stick individually - Windows was fine!
I contacted Crucial and they then sent some 266Mhz, but I found the same results repeating each of the tests.
To add further confusion, if I add 1 stick of my old Kingston 128MB to the two 256Mb crucial sticks Windows boots fine 9 times out of 10. Weird.
I have BIOS 2.7 and a good 400Watt power supply.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
I am still not sure what is going on. As I said, both  sticks of 266mhz or the 2 sticks of 333Mhz gave me the same problems when the two like sticks where installed together in slots 1 & 3.
A stick of either 266 or 333 in slot 1 on it's own is fine, as is 333 in slot 1 & 3 and the old kingston 266 in slot 2, or likewise with the 266Mhz. It is not always stable like this but certainly a lot better than just the 2 sticks by themselves.
I really wanted to buy a couple of 333Mhz sticks so I can use them on future boards - the crucial site did say these were OK, so I am wondering if anyone else has had any problems....

  • Installing additional Crucial rams to the pre-installed

    Hello everyone.
Well, this is my first time asking here
I just received my 8gb crucial rams today and here is the question:
I want to install the 8gb rams with the already 4gb installed(apple). As we know the already installed rams is from a different manufacture. I've asked yesterday in ifixit and a guy told me that it is very dangerous to mix manufacture and this was his reply:
+It is never good to mix RAM for a number of reasons. Not all chips talk well together is the main reason to not mix ram from different manufacturers. Besides that you have CAS latency (clock latency) referred to as CAS#, CL#, CAS=# or CL=#, even with in the same manufacturer it is not good to mix these.+
Is that correct? did anyone tried this before to mix 2 different brands?
    Thank you.

I added 8 GB RAM from OWC (macsales.com) to the 4 GB installed by Apple. No problems whatsoever; both Crucial and OWC have excellent reputation here. So, as long as you got the exact spec RAM for your Mac as published, that is the single most important thing. Here is what it says for your model:
    1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
on this Apple site with the specs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP588
So, if that is what you bought from Crucial, you should be just fine.

  • Apple RAM vs Crucial RAM

Ok so here i was looking for RAM for my MBP 15' 1.83Ghz. I looked on the apple site it 2GB was 240 UK pounds, so i looked on the crucial site and 2GB there was 50 UK pounds. Does anyone know the difference apart from price, why is apple RAM 190 UK pounds dearer. Both companies sell the 2GB kit (1GBx2), 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module
    any ideas?

I've written this so many times on this forum
Apple supply Samsung, Hynix, Nanya and Micron ram as standard - so any of these will be like buying from Apple directly.
Micron own Crucial and Crucial have a pretty good reputation also.
    Best of luck.

  • Which crucial RAM for a new iMac 27" 3.6 Intel Core i5? 1st time buyer

    Hi,
I'm thinking about buying the new iMac 27" 3.6 Intel Core i5 and was thinking about getting it with the standard 4 GB of RAM from the apple store, and then adding another 12 GB for a total of 16 GB of RAM. This is the RAM from crucial:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=iMac%203.6GHz%20Intel%20Core%2 0i5%20%2827-inch%20-%20DDR3%29%20Mid%202010&pl=Apple&cat=RAM
I have never bought RAM separately before. What happens to the 4 GB that are already in the iMAC? Do you just buy 12 GB and add it to the existing 4 GB, or do you buy 2 packages of 8 GB and install those two after removing the existing 4 GB? Could someone please advise me which RAM packages I need to buy to max out my RAM? Thank you for your assistance!!
    Tim

Do you think it would be worthwhile to sell the 4 GB of RAM that comes with the iMac to decrease the cost buying the 3rd party RAM?
That depends on what you plan to upgrade to, if you are going take it all the way to 16GB I'd probably hold onto the old RAM for few weeks just to ensure everything is safe and sound but don't expect to get much for it. If you buy the RAM from OWC they will give you a trade in value for it and that's something to investigate.
Will adding this new RAM void apple care warrantees?
Of course not, you can download a copy of the manual from the Support site and also get a copy of the warranty. In the manual it will have detailed instructions on how to upgrade RAM, Apple wouldn't put that in there if upgrading RAM would impair the warranty. In the warranty it clearly says if any damage is done that would void the warranty. About the only way you do damage is to pour coffee on the RAM slots while you're upgrading or hammering them in with a ball peen.

  • P7N Diamond Crucial RAM 1066@800

Hi all hope you can help me.
Haven't built a machine in a very long time and i'm now very rusty. My PC boots to show my processor running correctly @ 3GHz, FSB 1333 but shows my RAM running at 800MHz instead of it's speed of 1066MHz. I loaded the default safe settings first so that everything runs and it comfortably does. So the only thing that doesn't seem to be right is the RAM thats running at 800 and not 1066. Tried the optimal settings and the machine just wouldn't boot to OS, so changed them back to safe defaults. How can i get my RAM frequency up to correct speed and the PC stable. Forgive me for the lack of details. Tell me what you want to know and i will provide as best as i can. Specs of machine below:-
    Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650
    3GB Crucial Ballistix PC2-8500
    MSI P7N Diamond nForce 780i
    Inno3D 9800GTX 512MB
    Samsung SpinPoint HD501LJ 500GB SATAII
    Sony DRU-190S 20X DVD±RW DL & DVD-RAM Serial ATA
    Pioneer DVR-107D IDE DVD-RW
    Thermaltake Toughpower Modular 850W PSU
    Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate -SP1

    Inspector,
Remus took an adversarial tone, but all he really was saying is that Crucial's 1066 MHz DRAM came off the assembly line as 800 MHz DRAM, then was tested at the higher speed and passed the tests. Part of that "higher speed test" required increasing the voltage from the DDR2 standard of 1.8 VDC.  The 2.2 VDC mentioned in the Crucial specs told Remus that the DRAM chipset had not originally been designed to run at 1066 MHz but had been successfully overclocked to that speed with the required increase in voltage.  The important thing here is that, as the DRAM already was overclocked to get to 1066, you probably won't have too much more room to overclock any more.
Crucial is stating that the DRAM will work at the posted settings and as long as you are matching those settings the RAM should work, no matter WHAT assembly line and/or design it originated from.  Aaron is correct in that - if it's not working at Crucial's stated specs - then you should get a replacement/RMA either from the reseller or directly from Crucial.
You cannot use any timings other than the DRAM manufacturer's actual timings for that part number and expect it to work. The "7-7-7" timings Remus referenced were for a different manufactuer's product.
