Crucial SSD M4 256GB VS Vertex 3 240GB?

Crucial SSD M4 256GB VS Vertex 3 240GB?
Which is better for my MacBook Pro?

Unfortunately, your macbook's DVD Combo drive runs at Ultra ATA/100 instead of SATA. Which means you will not be able to use a data doubler to replace it with a regular HDD or SSD, as they use SATA.
Secondly, the Vertex 3 runs at SATA III (6Gbps). Your computer only supports SATA I (1.5Gbps), which means the Vertex 3 is much faster than what your computer will allow. So you would be better off getting a cheaper SSD that runs only at SATA II, that supports forcing it's speed back to SATA I.
But realistically, your probably going to want to look into perhaps upgrading your MBP as it's probably going to be more cost effective in the long run.
Hope that helps!

  • W520 support for SATA III or 6GB with Vertex 3 240GB SSD

I need a laptop that supports 16GB memory, HD display (1920 X 1080) and SATA 3 with 6Gb speeds to leverage my existing Vertex 3 240GB SSD.
Looking up PSREF, I find the W520 specs state SATA 3Gb/s (SATA II?) while the chipset is QM67 which is supposed to support SATA III 6Gb/s.
So the question is, does the W520 support SATA 3 at 6Gb/s? I need the throughput to leverage the throughput of the Vertex 3 240GB SSD  for multiple VM's on my laptop.
    Thanks and regards

Just for the record i been using several SSDs with the W520 including the OCZ Vertex 3 and OCZ Vertex 3 max and they both fit fine with the rubber rails in the W520. Just don't mount the case that is normally around the HDD/SSD. You won't need that case anyway when using the SSD in the W520. Use only the rubber rails and the SSD will fit fine and should be seated fine as well.

  • Xpower not recognizing Crucial SATA III 256GB SSD

    Or well, sometimes.
    Setup:
    Xpower MB
    Rosewill 950 watt Power
    6 GB (Soon 2 be 12) Corsair 1600 ram, 9/9/9/24
Gigabyte ATI 5970 (Soon to be 2)
Crucial SATA III 256GB SSD, AHCI Mode
Some crappy SATA II DVDR drive
I have RMA'd the drive once already, and have also had to RMA the ram... RAM was definitly the biggest problem. The new drive has the latest Crucial BIOS that fixes the corruption problems. I kind of feel I have had to RMA more than I've used on this stinking system, LOL!
Anyway... on to the issue. On SATA II everything runs fine. SATA III works ok most of the time. For some reason SATA III misses the SSD drive (Only thing hooked up to SATA III) every once in a while on boot up. Usually this is after a cold boot. Like, litterally cold.... as in system has been off for a couple of hours. Usually on reboot or within minutes of being turned off it's usually OK. Once it's not recognized, you just restart and it then comes up normal.
Hooked to SATA II, no such problem. Boots everytime.
Maybe the best bet is to get an aftermarket SATA III Controller...? I've read that the Marvell controller is kind of a dog.
Suggestions as to what to try beyond the obvious? (Cables, both power and SATA III/6Gbs, switching to the other SATA III port)
Thanks in advance! I hope I included enough relevant info, but if you need more I'll do my best to find it!

Bad idea.  AHCI is multiple simultaneous read/writes - really bad for an SSD.  IDE is fine unless RAID is being used.
This was a lesson to me too. Quote is from Aaron in another thread.
Added: Rather than just give up & get a different SATA 6Gb/s controller, get a ticket in with MSI Tech Support. That's the only way the board can be made to work right. Maybe try the 1.4b5 bios. If you are running the 1.2 bios, you will more than likely have problems trying to run 12GB RAM anyway. Are you 'sure' you even need 12GB RAM? I can run Crysis with just one 2GB stick without any problem on my testing rig (Crucial CT25664BA1339).

This has been reported by others about a cold boot issue & the reboot is ok. Now, for sure, a ticket needs to get in to Tech Support. They need to figure out what is causing this.

  • X58A GD65 with Vertex 4 240gb SSD Sata3 issue

    Hey all,
Was hoping to get some help with an issue I have with my X58A GD65 board. I've just installed a Vertex 4 240gb SSD and I can't get it to run at the speeds it should which are around 500mb/s read and write.
It's plugged into the white sata3 port and it's just about breaking 200 mb/s..! :(  I've been reading bits online and I think this is to do with a bad Marvell AHCI driver? I'm currently running 1.2.0.1032.
How can I solve this? What drivers should I be running?
    Thanks

Make sure the ide mode is achi. If the os was installed using ide you will need to make some registry changes.

Update the firmware of the ssd to the most recent and if that is no help, update the bios of the mainboard.
Note: Make sure to use the forum flash tool and download the bios from msi's website if you need to do this: >>MSI Downloads<< (I would link directly, but msi globals & usa's website has been having problems today.)

Installed m4 crucial SSD and I cannot erase and format new drive. I get an error "wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed." any suggestions? Thanks.

are you trying to format/erase it while it's in your Macbook?
    I have 2 Crucial M4 SSD.
Connect via external USB.  Boot your computer with your old hard drive and proceed with the erase feature if you're planning on cloning your drive.

  • T440s Crucial SSD and firmware password encryption

    Hello,
This post is directed at someotherguy because it is a follow through from another post.
I am opening a new thread because I think it is appropriate.
I took you advice in this thread: <link here> and used the password in the firmware to encrypt my SSD and abandoned
    trying to get bitblocker working.
Now I have bought a new Crucial SSD 480GB (I need the space) and successfully cloned my existing system over to it.
However the disk password option in the firmware is missing.
From reading around I understand this means that my new Crucial SSD is now in eDrive mode (your tool confirms this) and unfortunately you cannot reset a crucial SSD at this time back to ATA Security mode.
Crucial is replacing the drive for a new one as they except this is a problem their end.
My question is:  How do I make sure the new SSD from crucial does not go into eDrive mode by cloning/copying/installing windows 8.1?
I really would appreciate a comprehensive reply :-)

    Hi,
Someotherguy, Brendanhoar, ColonelONeil:  Thanks for all the help.  I used a little from everyone and got my drive encrypted.  Completely gave up on bitlocker, couldn't get it to work properly.  At some stage you have to give up and move on.  I'm using the SEP and Firmware option for encrypting my data.
The tip with setting the password at the start to prevent Windows 8 switching to eDrive mode was quite clever, since ATA-Security and eDrive are mutually exclusive.
BTW I used Paragon's Disk Manager 14 Suite to clone/copy my existing drive.  Worked a treat.
Every now and then when booting the T440s doesn't see the drive and reports the drive is missing :-(, but a quick reboot has always solved the problem.  Not optimum, but I can live with it.
Thanks again everyone for the help,

  • What is the correct way to transfer data from old hard drive to new Crucial SSD on a mid 2010 13" MBP

I just bought an Crucial M550 256GB for my mid 2010 MBP. And I'm not clear on the data transfer instructions.
    1) it came with Acronis instalation kit with a blank CD and a usb cable. I'm not sure what this CD is used for?
    2) is it best to install the SSD with a fresh OSX download and then just use time machine to load all my previous settings?
    3) or do I partition the SSD before I install it in the MBP and transfer using a clone?
Not sure what to do here...

Well, I am not familiar with the Crucial kit you got - you might want to ask them about that blank CD...... however, I did install an SSD and this is what I did:
I ordered a kit from OWC which included an external USB hard drive enclosure and tools. When it arrived, I first installed it in the external enclosre, hooked it to my MBP and then used CarbonCopyCloner to make a full bootable clone of my system on the new SSD after formatting it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the GUID partition scheme. I then uninstalled the internal, installed the SSD in its place (following the install video availabe at OWC) and booted up - that was it. I installed the old internal drive into the external enclosure for an instantaneous bootable cbackup.

  • 256 Crucial SSD upgrade

    Hi,
I'm considering upgrading my MacBook (MacBook5,1: 2.4GHz, Aluminum, 13-inch, Late 2008) and switching the original 256Gb SATA drive with a 256Gb SSD 2.5-inch drive from Crucial. However, when I contacted my local vendor to ask about the upgrade, they stated that an SSD upgrade is not possible for this model, that Apple never ever had an SSD option available for this MacBook and that the SSD "might not work or may cause damage".
So, I used Mactracker to check on my machine's specs and it shows a 256Gb SSD upgrade option, just as I remember when I originally purchased the MacBook. However, as Mactracker is not an official source of information for Apple products, I'm not entirely sure whether to trust it.
I would appreciate if anybody could point me in the right direction for this. Especially if there is an official webpage somewhere that states what upgrades can be performed on a Mac model.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP500
While the above MacBook specfications show that yes there was an SSD option for your MacBook, it was the 128GB SSD, as the 256GB SSD was not yet available. Since they generate little or no heat, a greater capacity model could just as well be installed in the future.
I've also been considering a 256GB SSD, but for my late 2007 MacBook, and it's only a question of price.

  • Is it time for a new SSD? Please read my story, my battle with my M4 Crucial SSD

This is whats been happening the past couple of days and what I have been doing to try and isolate what is causing my fresh win7 install to have so many issues running. IMO, i've narrowed it down to be an issue with my SSD, and not my RAM. Please read, and advise.  So I changed out my p8z68 MB and ivy bridge CPU for a new maximus VII hero and Devils Canyon Haswell cpu. After installing windows I noticed it was running sluggish and would not install updates successfully or without crashing.Over 3 attempts of reinstalling win7 64bit. The build kept crashing, failed to fix windows startup, MBR error 01 or getting the BSOD. I firt tested my RAM... I ran memtest86 with 100% pass and found and isolated that  1 of the 4 x4gb of my Black Vengeance Corsair ram had errors on it (ram is 3 years old in use). I ended up taking those out and replacing with brand new 2 x 4gb Gskill sniper sticks I had still in packaging. I re-ran Memtest86 on the new RAM just to be sure and ....no errors.  I want to emphasise that by now I've reinstalled window 3 times on this build upgrade....noticing a lot of lag, in windows after fresh install . Especially when opening programs like windows update windows  as well as other things like, device manager or even a Web browser. If I have more than one window open. My hard SSD LED on my front panel, lights up  like it's busy, browser and programs freeze or I get a program "not responding"  error, on top until I wait it out...then it disapears.  Finally I did another OS install..this time and after much research,  I made sure to run a Secure Clean All, on my Crucial M4 SSD (it too has been used for the past 3 year). I had already updated its firmware to 070H a long time ago.  I also made sure I had the most current Intel, SATA, VGA, LAN, and sound drivers were downloaded.  Durring Windows update it reached 140 of 149 updates before receiving a BSOD again even with the new ram!  After Reboot... I went in and this time before running Windows update...again, I made sure all my services were closed and did a "CLEAN" Boot to windows. Doing this finally made my system able to dowload all the updates successfuly.  Ok so now that Win7 is fully updated, I got my antivirus ..norton on. More updates, with little  issue. But I still notice while my SSD is writing, I say thats what its doing when my computers fornt panel LED is flashing, that the program / software/ game im installing freezes, until it has a chance to "Catch up" , Or install fails, or for instance dowloading patches, updated to games..they have been failing oh and just now for the second time...SKYPE has disconnected itself giving me a I/O error. So these are all my symptoms and what I've tried. To my knowlege the M4 SSD model doesnt have any kind of software to help aid in determining its health . And is why I am here now typing to you all .  Is it time to get a new SSD?? What else can I try? Thanks, Christopher.

    Hi cswann821,
Is the system overclocked or with default clocks?
Note that your motherboard has two SATA controllers, Intel Z97 with SATA6G_1-6 red connectors and ASMedia controller also with red connectors SATA6G_E1/2. Are you using Intel or ASMedia controlled port?
What do you mean by 'Secure Clean All', what exactly did you do? It is probably not relevant to former issues but note that some tools do 'overwrite with zeroes'. It is not good for SSDs and works completely different than ATA command 'secure erase'.
Check what SATA port is being used and if it is Intel make sure what driver version is in use. You can check it with Device manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers -> right click on the selected controller -> Properties -> Driver tab
To check health of the SSD you can use CrystalDiskInfo. Please post SMART data of the drive - use 'Edit > Copy' option, just please remove drive's serial number.

  • Anyone got a crucial SSD working MBP 17?

Had a Crucial M4 512 working my 2.0ghz MBP15 but the logic board went out. Got a refurb 17 MBP for dirt cheap...and it's slightly newer then the 15 I had...but when I put the Crucial M4 SSD in it...it will not recognize it. If I put the drive in anything else it boots right up, so we know it's good.
Seems odd that a slightly newer (in design) MBP 17 would struggle where a MBP 15 doesn't.

Thanks Bob. I have to run to the Apple store tomorrow to have them test out the logic board on my MBP15 that this MBP17 replaced...I'll ask them about their knowledge of bad SATA cables and issue SSD based on your comment. Thank you.

  • Is my Crucial SSD correctly aligned?

I've installed Arch Linux on my Crucial M4 SSD after installing Windows 8. After doing this, I started to read about correct alignment and how important it is supposed be.
But to be honest, I didn't really understand yet whether my SSD is correctly aligned, or not.
I'd be very thankful if you could tell me.

You may need to go to Disk Management and assign a drive letter/mount point to the SSD. If it's newly bought, you should format it in Disk Management first.
