Crystal Reports - Some Basic Questions

Hi I am a student from Germany and I need to try Crystal Reports for a couple of days for my diploma thesis.
My first smal question is: Whats the basic programming language that CR is based on?
As far as I can judge it - its VBA right?
The focus of me thesis is the chart creation ....
Question 2: Is there a better solution from SAP to create Charts ... the Chart-Assistent from Crystal Report is pretty nice to work with - but imagine i dont want to create a report but just visualize some data in a chart for a quick overview of - lets say my market situation - is crystal reports the most edvanced way, that is also available in a trial version - to create charts.
Please please help me and answer my questions.

About the charts: Depends on your requirements what exactly you want to implement.
There are Xcelsius, Crystal Reports both that you can create charts with.
I would sugest you to go through the docuemntations of Crystal Reports and Xcelsius first. So that you can be sure what all you can do using these tools.

Some basic questions on File Adapter

Hello all,
I have some basic questions on XI and File Adapter and hope you can help me. Any answer is appreciated.
1. Can I use NFS transport protocol to poll a file from a machine in the network, which is not the XI? Or do I have to use FTP instead?
2. If I understand it correctly - when using the FTP-File Adapter, XI has the role of a ftp client. I have to run a ftp server on my distant machine. XI connects to FTP-Server and polls the file.
Can it also be configured the other way round? The scenario I think of would be: FTP client installed on distant machine, which connects to FTP-Server(XI) and loads up a file. So XI would act as FTP Server.
I know this works, if I install a ftp Server on the computer my XI runs on, and use the NFS-File Adapter to observe the folder. But I want to know, if I need a second, independant ftp server for this.
3. And last but not least: When do I need the active ftp mode instead of passive?

XI cannot act as FTP server, but it is always a client. When XI is reading (File sender adpater) when XIis writing than it is File Receiver adapter

It depends on your firewall configuration. The best and the fastests is active mode but not always available.

Some basic question about SCM Installation

Hi Folks,
Could you please advice me about some basic questions about SCM and its installation -
Q1. Do I need to have an R/3 System to be able to practice OR demo the SCM system?
Q2. If, yes, which version of SCM is compatible with the ECC 5.0?
Q3. What are the basic requirements to install SCM (version compatible with ECC 5.0) and ECC on a oracle db and windows OS?
Q4. Does SCM have APO and BI as an inbuilt functionality OR does the user need to purchase these as an Add-On?

---> There are various Modules in SCM Like APO (Sub Modules DP (stand alone), SNP Needs Master data from R/3 and has to pass on transactional Data to R/3, PPDS same as SNP, GATP same as SNP), ICH needs Data from R/3 to work with. Core Interface (CIF) connects R/3 to APO for transferring data.
Q2. If, yes, which version of SCM is compatible with the ECC 5.0?

here is what I know..
1 & 2. Depending on the backend SAP version, the relevant ESS/MSS Business Packages have to be installed on the Portal. On the backend it will be via an Add-on.
3. The webDynpro versions of ESS/MSS are available from mySAP ERP2004/2005 (ECC5/6). The best way to customize the iViews would be through the NetWeaver DevStudio.

Some basic questions on HANA

Hi All,
I have some basic questions on SAP HANA,
I heard from one of my colligues that it is mandatory to learn SQL scripts for HANA, is it true?
Or basic knowledge is enough for HANA???
Is it added advantage while working on HANA or can we manage with basic knowledge of SQL???
I tried to find answers for these questions in SCN, but I could not get proper answers, So could you please provide answers for above my questions.

Hi Vladmir,
SAP HANA is a platform and is more than just database. Which can serve both OLTP and OLAP.
But since it is a database, Sp SQL skills helps you while modelling in SAP HANA. So When will it be helpful ? It is while addressing some complex requirements using SAP HANA.
At the end of the day, when you want to work in HANA ( a super duper database ) and you still thinking of whether to learn SQL or not?

Some basic questions about DAC

I am just starting to use DAC now and I have some basic questions about DAC..
1: How many different kinda image tables are there, what are they used for?
2: In order to check which ETL mapping with in the same execution plan is taking a long time, what to do? I mean is there a table that stores such info?
3: How to determine which ETL task to run after and which after?
4: Is subject area always map to the Informatica workflow folder? Or what should subject area be?

I have problems to understand you question but will do a try:
From a logical point of view objects can be only serialized reasonabely when they have a state of it's own which can be reestablished at a later point in time and space without further dependencies.
F.E. a "serialized file" would NOT make much sense cause it depends heavily on the state of the underlying file system.
You can't expected that is can be deserialized at a later point of time (physical file refered may not longer exists) or on another machine, where the serialized object was transported to.
Technical - at zero approach - it's more or less trivial. Simply implement Serializable and all non static, non transient fields of your object will be serialized automatically.
But there is a couple of pitfalls, you should study documentations regarding this feature.

2. I know it makes no sense to serialize a socket because it is fixed only by specifying ip and port at both ends, and is valid only when the network connection remains valid. Still in the context of my previous question, I would like to know why a socket cannot be serialized.

I have some question regarding Crystal Report Service Pack for different version respectively :-
Crystal Report 9
1. I have SP5 and SP7. Can I just install SP7 without installing SP5 ?
Crystal Report XI R2
1. I have install a distribution of Crystal Report X1 R2 in a non-development server.
Can I install the latest SP6 into that non-development server ? Which SP6 I should install, preferably a link to that SP would be great.
NOTE: I am a VS.NET 2003 and 2005 developer.

- no. From CR XI on, SPs are only meant to be used on development computers. E.g.; a computer that has the CR designer installed. To update your runtime computer, you will have to uninstall the current runtime and install the SP6 runtime:

Crystal Report Best Practice Question

Hello All;
I have got a task regarding parameter passing to Crystal Report via Crystal Report, I would like to find best way to achieve it.
Imagine that I have got parameterized and non reports-parameterized. I am developing a report manager that will enable users to subscribe to the reports and schedule them with their parameters. I have got a subscription web page with the list of reports. When a user wants to subscribe to a report and schedule it, if there is no parameter in the report, it is fine but if there is any parameter that needs to be passed to the report(which we can find from rpt file), user should be able to enter these parameters values via a panel in the page. and I will save those parameters' values to the database.
Effectively, I need to create a parameter entry panel to get the parameters and save them to the database with their type, value and so on, then I need to use these parameters programmatically for exporting reports to the different file formats.
Basically, I must develop parameter entry panel run time in accordance with the parameter types that the corresponding report has.
Does anyone have any idea what the best way is to achieve it?

You can read the parameters out of the report at run time, prompt the user for them, then schedule it with those parameter values.
To get the parameters, use
ReportClientDocument.DataDefController.DataDefinition.ParameterFields

Visual Studio 2005/2008 and Crystal Reports versions/upgrade questions.

I've tried posting this question on the MSDN forums and gotten no response.
I've downloaded and installed VS 2008 Beta 2.   The versions on the Crystal Reports files included are 10.5.0.1806
I'm currently using VS 2005, with the included Crystal Reports. The versions on those files are 10.2.0.xxxx. I've created an desktop app (in VB) which stores it's data in a database and uses the CR 10 runtime merge modules to generate a report.
I was considering upgrading the Crystal Reports version to XI. I would like to allow customers to modify my delivered report with their own licensed copy of CR XI. I am not providing any functionality within my app to create or modify the delivered .rpt or use it outside my application.
Questions:
Do I need to update the runtime files to CR XI to support rpt files modified with CR XI? Current runtime files are being delivered with the CR 10 merge module.
I see a Crystal Reports for Visual Studio upgrade to CR XI.
Can I update the merge modules to CR XI and still use the CR for VS2005 for development?
Does it make any sense to update CR for VS 2005? Or to get the full CR XI Developer edition? My usage of CR functionality is very limited.
Would there be any benefit to waiting for the release of VS 2008?   How does that change the scenario?
How does Crystal Reports for Visual Studio fit in with the Crystal Reports Lifecycle? It's not mentioned on Business Objects End of Life Dates page . Crystal 10 has a Patch EOL of 31-Dec-07.   Does this apply to CR for VS 2005? Where does 10.5 fit in?
My main concern is allowing customers with CR XI to change the format of my delivered .rpt to run with my app. Adding their company name, logo, etc.   My testing show a CR XI report still works with my current app. But, going forward, what should I deliver and what do I need to use to continue development?

To use Reports designed in XI, you need to use XI or higher runtime, running them in older versions may work, but you may encounter unforeseen issues doing so.
If you are to use VS2005 for development you need to use XI Release 2 (11.5) runtime.
If you are going to use VS2008 for development you need to use Crystal Reports 2008 with Service Pack 0.
The support end of life for versions of Crystal Reports bundled with Visual Studio are linked to what Microsoft's lifecycle for the product is. Generally if there is a workaround for the issue that is simple enough, there will not be a patch created.
The changes you are expecting the customer to do can be accomplished with our RAS SDK which is available without using enterprise starting with Crystal Reports XIR2 SP2.

Changing Crystal report connection - another question

I saw some code examples that looks promising, but I encountered some problems in opening the report as a ReportClientDocument ocbject.
I use the following code:

Crystal Report "some parameters are missing values" while exporting/printin

I am able to pass parameters from a JSP to a crystal report through CrystalReportViewer and view the report. (I tried doing it using the code provided on this help forum. I was getting a message: "Some Parameters are missing values". I had to add 1 line: pfield1.setReportName(""); for every parameter field. And It worked..)
Now I can see the "Print" and "Export" buttons. But when I try to print or export the report, I get the same message "Some Parameters are missing values".

I am a HS computer science teacher who seeks a professional mentor regarding JDBC. While I have successfully
- installed a MySQL database,
created, queried, updated the database,
- read the Java Tutorial and:
used Connect/J and written a main method to manipulate a
database
created very simple applets to query or update a database with
their run methods.
I have basic questions about how pieces fit together in web application development and how one can best take advantage of OOP when dealing with a database. My motivation are a few very bright post-AP students who have an excellent grasp of OOP and data structures; they are curious to see how Java is used in web applications.
The sample code I have found on the Web has all been small main method examples. I would like to see and discuss a truly OOD application with JDBC, and to discuss how the pieces fit together.
So, aware of our ignorance and of how dangerous a little knowledge can be, and not expecting to go live with an application anytime soon, we seek a very high level understanding of current professional practice (like: "Where does tomcat fit in here?") as well as some direction while we get our hands dirty. (I hope that makes sense.)
If you have time to correspond with us via e-mail, answer some very basic questions, and perhaps take a look at some code as we work through it, we would love to hear from you off-line ([email protected]). We would also appreciate knowing where to look for a good OOD sample application. Thanks.

Crystal Report Server - InfoView question

Hi . I have a question on the Crystal Report Server. I want to send the output ( excel file ) from a crystal report in Infoview. I tried to click the 'Send To' button, but it only sends out the .rpt file. Please help...

If you schedule the report you will have output file options for Excel, PDF, Word...
You should probably have an Export option on your viewer as well - Excel should appear in this. (You need to have permissions to see this)

Crystal Report Server Database question

Hi,
I am reading the installation guide for crystal report server. It said a database is required for CMS. It also mention about a database for auditing (optional). I was wondering if they share one database or I have to create one for each?

Crystal Reports Server does not support auditing, unfortunately some of the admin guides for BOE and CRS are the same and this gets mistaken many times. If you want auditing then you must buy Business Objects Enterprise and then the previous post is accurate.
