Crystal Reports versions and DSR files

Hi,
I am working with an ancient VB6 application that has 25 or so reports attached to it.  These files are .dsr files.  I am having a problem opening them in the VB6 IDE and when I investigate (through talking to people here or researching on line - via CodeGuru,VBForums,StackOverflow etc.), I get conflicting reports of what I should be looking for and doing.
My question to anyone who can answer me quasi-intelligently is this:  Has Crystal Reports, in ANY of its previous versions, ever produced a DSR file as a report.  I know the versions since v8, I think, use the .RPT suffix.  I have been searching and talking to people and some say no, some say yes.  I figured someone here would definitively know.  I have tried to convert one of the dsr files to a Crystal Report file using VS 2008 (assuming it was Data Report file), but received the error that the file was not a Data Report file.
If you need any more information I will be glad to fill in any blanks necessary....
For the current application, the following is true:
XP Platform
VB6
Crystal Reports 8.5 installed, but I have Crystal Reports 7 dlls (Library and ActiveX Designer Runtime) available but not the full application.
Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated....
Thank you,
Gene Bonfiglo
Software Engineer

Hi Don,
Sorry to be so vague.  I think my newbie-ness is shining through a bit.
I think the closest scenario is the third one.  I am trying to resurrect this "Jurassic:" application in order to see what it does, so that it can be rewritten.  The problem is, or was, that it was not compiling and the problem was seen as Crystal Reports.  I removed Crystal from the equation and it turns out Crystal was not the only problem.  I, howevver, fixed the other issues and have gone back to the Crystal issue.
I cannot effectively use anything associated with CR7.  It causes errors and crashes the app and generally that's not acceptable.  Since I am working remotely, I am waiting to hear back from the server guy who set this up to see if he installed or even has the 8.5 Developer edition (I am fairly sure he did not install it even if he had it).  Assuming that it is or gets installed, I will implement it in the app and upgrade the DSR files as you suggested.
For 8.5 I currently have the following dlls:
Crystal Reports 8.5 ActiveX Designer Run Time Library (craxdrt.dll)
Crystal Reports 8.5 Standard Wizard Component (crystalwizard.dll)
Crystal Reports Viewer 8.5 (crviewer.dll)
These have been included in my application, but at the present time I cannot run my application with an older DSR file because the application shuts down with an "Unexpected Error - 50057"
If I may, can I leave this open for now, and get back to you when I have more results?  I have a feeling that I am missing some things (ie Developer edition and associated support files) and that I need to go hunting for them.
I appreciate the information you have given and would appreciate anything further you can tell me, which I understand due to the age of this app may be very little.
Thank you once again, Don,
Gene

  • Visual Studio 2005/2008 and Crystal Reports versions/upgrade questions.

    I've tried posting this question on the MSDN forums and gotten no response.
    I've downloaded and installed VS 2008 Beta 2.   The versions on the Crystal Reports files included are 10.5.0.1806
    I'm currently using VS 2005, with the included Crystal Reports.  The versions on those files are 10.2.0.xxxx.  I've created an desktop app (in VB) which stores it's data in a database and uses the CR 10 runtime merge modules to generate a report.
    I was considering upgrading the Crystal Reports version to XI.  I would like to allow customers to modify my delivered report with their own licensed copy of CR XI.  I am not providing any functionality within my app to create or modify the delivered .rpt or use it outside my application.
    Questions:
    Do I need to update the runtime files to CR XI to support rpt files modified with CR XI?  Current runtime files are being delivered with the CR 10 merge module.
    I see a Crystal Reports for Visual Studio upgrade to CR XI.
    Can I update the merge modules to CR XI and still use the CR for VS2005 for development?
    Does it make any sense to update CR for VS 2005?  Or to get the full CR XI Developer edition?  My usage of CR functionality is very limited.
    Would there be any benefit to waiting for the release of VS 2008?   How does that change the scenario?
    How does Crystal Reports for Visual Studio fit in with the Crystal Reports Lifecycle?  It's not mentioned on Business Objects End of Life Dates page . Crystal 10 has a Patch EOL of 31-Dec-07.   Does this apply to CR for VS 2005?  Where does 10.5 fit in?
    My main concern is allowing customers with CR XI to change the format of my delivered .rpt to run with my app.  Adding their company name, logo, etc.   My testing show a CR XI report still works with my current app.  But, going forward, what should I deliver and what do I need to use to continue development?

    To use Reports designed in XI, you need to use XI or higher runtime, running them in older versions may work, but you may encounter unforeseen issues doing so.
    If you are to use VS2005 for development you need to use XI Release 2 (11.5) runtime.
    If you are going to use VS2008 for development you need to use Crystal Reports 2008 with Service Pack 0.
    The support end of life for versions of Crystal Reports bundled with Visual Studio are linked to what Microsoft's lifecycle for the product is.  Generally if there is a workaround for the issue that is simple enough, there will not be a patch created.
    The changes you are expecting the customer to do can be accomplished with our RAS SDK which is available without using enterprise starting with Crystal Reports XIR2 SP2.

  • Silverlight and Crystal Reports Version 11.2

    Hello
    a customer works with Crystal Reports Version 11.2. Is it possible to create a Silverlight Application (in order to set the parameters) and then call the RPT-File? Is there a link for an example?
    What I have found so far is this blog entry: http://www.global-webnet.net/blogengine/post/2009/01/06/Running-Crystal-Reports-from-Silverlight.aspx
    ... But nobody can tell me which version of Crystal Reports is needed.
    Thanks!
    Bernhard

    Hi Bernhard,
    From the looks of the Design in your link it does appear to be a newer version of CR. It may be version 10.2 or 10.5 that comes with VS 2005 and 2008 he was using. If it was then R2 should work also.
    There is a link to Contact the blogger, ask him what versions he was using.
    Unfortunately we have not done any testing with silver light so can't say if it will work. Add your request to the Idea Place link above, search first, and then vote for it if found. Program Managers do watch it closely and they will add it if enough people request it.
    Thank you

  • Integrate Crystal Reports version 11.5 and Visual FoxPro

    I have developed several softwares in Visual FoxPro while using Crystal Reports Version 7 as the major reporting tool.   It was easy to invoike Crystal reports from my applications, simply by adding the Crystal OCX onto the VFP form.
    Now --- I have added the ActiveXReportViewer from version 11.5 onto my VFP form.    Looks ok but it I am not sure how to invoke the reports in Maximized mode.   Seems like it will only show the report the same size as the object I placed on my VFP form.
    I need to know how to do this yesterday.   I must implement a new system and I do not want to revert back to Crystal reports version 7.   Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    I would recommend you have an empty form and drop the viewer on that form.  Set the form's state to Maximize.

  • Crystal Reports export and print fails with SSL / https but works with http

    Windows 2008 Server, 32-bit (IIS7)
    ASP.NET 2.0
    Ajax 1.0
    Crystal Reports version 10.5.3700.0
    http:  printing works, export works
    https:  printing not working, only export to MS Excel and MS Word work.
    I am able to generate reports using both http and https, and the toolbar icons are all showing.  However, I am unable to print or export properly with SSL.
    Printing prompts me with a select printer window, and then a window 'Retrieving Page 1' follow by two messages from Crystal Print Control both stating:
    A communication error occured.  Printing will be stopped.
    Exporting generates various errors depending on which export method is being selected (however Excel and Word work over https).
    I've found the same problem on this site and other forums, but never a resolution to get exporting and printing to work with SSL.  Will someone please provide me assistance or possibly relay what settings they're using if they have Crystal Reports export or printing working over SSL in IIS7?  Everything works fine when I change the address from https to http.
    Please let me know if I can help by providing further information.  We've gone through a great deal of possible solutions with code and I'm currently looking in to IIS settings again.
    Thank you.

    Thanks Ludek. I got it by searching KB number.
    Unfortunately, it didn’t fix my problem even my IE (IE8 and IE 9) has correct setting.  I double check my version. PrintControl.CAB is version 10.2.0.1146. we use VS 2005 Crystal report and VB .NET. It works fine on HTTP. But when we use HTTPS (SSL Certificate from go daddy).
    1: Crystal report export
                Export to MS Excel, Word: pop us “File download”, then click “Save”. It says “Internet Explorer cannot download ReportView.aspx from my site. Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. the requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try it again later”
                Export to RPt, Rich text format: It says “Internet Explorer cannot download ReportView.aspx from my site. Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. the requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try it again later”
                Export to PDF : nothing happened.
    2: Print:
                Pop up dialog to select printer, click “Print” “. Shows windows “Crystal Report Viewer” and pop us error message box. Title is “Crystal Print Control”. Message is “An communication error occurred. Printing will be stopped”. Click “OK” and pop up error message box again.
    Please advise.
    Thank you very much!

  • Crystal Reports 9 and Clearquest

    Hello,
    my company uses (for historic reasons) IBM Rational Clearquest 2003 (2003.06.15.734.) with Crystal Reports Version 9.2 (Service Pack 7) to create Reports on the entries in the Clearquest database. However, when I try to create a new report format, I get the following error message:
    Problems creating new report format.
    Details
    COleDispatchException exception reported: You are attempting to use functionality that
    falls under the Crystal Decisions Report Creation API license. This system does not have
    a valid license, or the evaluation copy of the license has expired. Please contact Crystal
    Decisions to obtain a Report Creation API license.
    Now, even though this sounds like a licensing issue, I do have a valid, legal license of Crystal Reports Designer 9, and it seems that Clearquest 2003 specifically expects Version 9 (My company laso purchased Crystal Reports Client 2008, but it seems to be incompatible with Clearquest 2003). A search on the Internet has yielded similar problems with Clearquest 7 and Crystal Reports 11, that were subsequently resolved, but, unfortunately, upgrading Clearquest is not an option for my company at this point in time.
    If anybody has any tips or pointers, I would greatly appreciate any help!

    Hi,
    The problem really is a licensing issue.  Clearquest sounds like it's making api calls to Crystal.  Crystal 9 had special api calls that required special licensing.  These were the Report Creation APIs.  As soon as a Report Creation API is called from an application, the report engine looks for a license file and if the file doesn't exist you get the message you see.  The regular APIs are free and do not require the license.
    In newer versions of Crystal the licensing has been revised which is why Crystal 11 works.
    In most cases, I'd say upgrade from Crystal 9 to 11 but because it's Clearquest that's calling the reports, I doubt it would be as simple as upgrading the report engine to Crystal 11.
    My suggestion would be to go back to Clearquest and see if they have a license you should have received.  If they designed it with those APIs, they should also be distributing the license.  The other option would be to call Business Objects and see about purchasing a license.  From my understanding it's not cheap.
    Good luck,
    Brian

  • Crystal Reports 2008 and Postscript

    Hello,
    I think I have to start a new thread for this. Originally I described the problem here:
    Printing Crystal Report to Postscript
    Now we upgraded our Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2005 to the latest version - CR 2008 SP0. We had purchased the full version to be able to print the postscript files correctly, without any prompts for the file name, because I've read that this was a bug in the old versions, but it had been fixed. But I still cannot do this.
    I'm trying to print my reports to the postscript file:
    PrinterSettings ps = new PrinterSettings();
    ps.PrinterName = "TRADEPOSTSCRIPT";
    ps.PrintFileName = txtPath.Text.Trim() + "
    " + txtFormNo.Text.Trim() +
    ".ps";
    ps.PrintToFile = true;
    rpt.PrintOptions.CopyFrom(ps, ps.DefaultPageSettings);
    rpt.PrintToPrinter(1, true, 0, 0);
    I'm still getting prompt for the file name.
    This doesn't make any sense - the path and file name are specified in my code. The whole project will be useless for us if the users will be getting prompts.
    Could you please help me how to solve this issue?
    Thank you,
    Peter Afonin

    Hi,
    I am trying to print and specify a filename to a postscript printer as well. However, my version of crystal reports in Visual Studio 2008 does not come with this method....
    reportDocument.PrintToPrinter(printerSettings, pageSettings, True) ?
    I have checked and there does not exist an overloaded method in the object browser for this 'PrintToPrinter' method that would accept PrinterSettings object??
    The only method I have is as below:
    ===============================
    public virtual void PrintToPrinter(int nCopies, bool collated, int startPageN, int endPageN)
        Member of CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.ReportDocument
    Summary:
    Prints the specified pages of the report to the printer selected using the PrintOptions.PrinterName property. If no printer is selected, the default printer specified in the report will be used.
    Parameters:
    nCopies: Indicates the number of copies to print.
    collated: Indicates whether to collate the pages.
    startPageN: Indicates the first page to print.
    endPageN: Indicates the last page to print.
    ===============================
    My version is Crystal Reports Basic and is what comes with VS 2008 (not upgraded):
    From  the GAC:
    CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine, Version=10.5.3700.0
    FileVersion: 10.5.0.1943
    .NET FRAMEWORK v3.5 SP1
    Please help.

  • Crystal Reports Version Question

    Hello,
    I am developing a web site using vs 2010 and the compatible version as downloaded from here. I have come across a small issue that I'm sure is easily solvable but I can't find any references to it. When I try to run this solution on another machine or server with crystal reports 10 installed I notice that the graphs colours aren't matching to as set in the report. I understand that this is a version issue but without installing vs 2010 and then the crystal report version supported onto another machine. Is there away or an installation just so that the reports work as expected (fo this version without installing vs 2010).
    I tried downloading the redist 32 bit version from here and updating the config file accordingly but when I then generate a report I'm getting a database logon failed error.
    Note that if I change the webconfig file back to 10.2.3600.0 from the recently changed 13.0.2000.0 then the report works as expected, except the graph colours aren't using the conditional colours.
    Am I doing something horribly wrong?
    Cheers,
    John.

    I'm not sure I understand the details here - I htink the description gets a bit muddled as it goes. E.g.; this:
    I understand that this is a version issue but without installing vs 2010 and then the crystal report version supported onto another machine. Is there away or an installation just so that the reports work as expected (fo this version without installing vs 2010).
    is a source of confusion for me(?).
    In any case, CRVS2010 and CR 10.2 should be (as far as I know, are) side by side compatible. Based on my interpretation of the statement above, I wonder about the runtime being deployed. The CRVS2010 runtime is here:
    MSM
    http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/cr4vs2010/CRforVS_mergemodules_13_0.zip
    MSI 32 bit
    http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/cr4vs2010/CRforVS_redist_install_32bit_13_0.zip
    MSI 64 bit
    http://downloads.businessobjects.com/akdlm/cr4vs2010/CRforVS_redist_install_64bit_13_0.zip
    Are you using one of the above to deploy the crvs2010 runtime?

  • Crystal Reports version 10.0.0.53327 supported on Windows Server 2003 R2?

    Hello,
    We are currently using Crystal Reports version 10.0.0.53327 with a ASP web application on Windows 2000 Server. We are in the process of upgrading the web server to Windows Server 2003 R2 but have encountered problems with the print feature in the application when printing reports using Crystal Reports. We have duplicated every setting from the original web server on the new web server down to each registry entry and DLL file for Crystal Reports but continue to have a problem. Are there any known compatibility issues with our version of CR and Windows Server 2003 R2?
    Any information or assistance provided will be greatly appreciated.
    Morgan

    You are not giving enough info re. the actual issue. E.g.; encountered problems with the print feature is a bit "loosy goosy". What are the details of the printing issue? Errors? Incorrect printing? Etc.
    Taking a wild guess here, but do have a look at [this|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_erq/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes.do] kbase.
    If that does not help, do search these forums as well as the kbase:
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/advancedsearch?cat=sdn_ossnotes&query=&adv=true
    And if that does not help, provide more info. Oh, also search for latest updates for CR 10 here:
    http://service.sap.com/sap/bc/bsp/spn/bobj_download/main.htm
    And finally, specify how you deploy the CR 10 runtime to that server.

  • Crystal Reports 11 and 8.5

    I have a 8.5 Crystal Report Server and need to update reports. We can't find our 8.5 license and needed to know if I can run a Cyrstal report written in version 11 and run on a 8.5 server.

    Hi Tom,
    No, Crystal Reports 8.5 file format can be read by CR 9 and above but CR 9 and above reports cannot be read by CR 8.5 and below. We updated CR 9 to fully support UNICODE and therefore the file format in CR 9 and above is not backward compatible or readable by CR 8.5.
    Only option is to try to find an old copy of CR 8.5 and valid license.

  • Crystal Reports 11 and 8.5 Compatibility

    Can an application running Crystal Reports 11 and a legacy application running Crystal Reports 8.5 co-exist on the same system?  The legacy application is a vb6 app and just uses the crystal report viewer.  If they canu2019t what needs to be fixed or otherwise changed?
    It appears if the legacy app is installed last, then the Crystal Reports 11 application is broken (its report viewer doesnu2019t work).
    ThanksBlake

    Hello Javier,
    There isn't going to be much, if any, DLL files that are compatable with both. When version 9 was made it was redesigned from the ground up to be Unicode compliant. When this was done all DLL files that worked with the old versions would not work with the new versions.

  • How to integrate Crystal Report Server and J2EE platform

    Hi,
    It's my first time using Crystal Report, so I don't know exactly how I should start...
    As what i've searched around, there is a method of generating crystal report from a JSP file. By this way, everything will be handled within the application server.
    But in my project, we intend to leave the part of handling and generating report to another server, i.e. there will be 2 servers: application & report. Anyone experienced with this can guide me through? By splitting into 2 servers, that means I will need to have the Crystal Report Server right? And if doing so, from the application, how do I call the Crystal Report server?
    Thanks for viewing...

    You can use [Crystal Reports for Eclipse|Crystal Reports for Eclipse 2.0 Release Update 8 is Now Available!; to do exactly this. It comes with an example application for displaying reports using the CR Web Report Viewer. It's EXTREMELY easy to use and even to integrate in your existing web app. If you're using Eclipse and have the CR4E plugin installed, you can go to File > New > Crystal Reports and select Crystal Reports Web Project. This will create the CR server application for you. You can also right click on an existing web app and have Crystal Reports integrated directly into your existing app.
    To do this, just right click on your web app and go to Project Properties. Then, go to Project Facets, check the box next to Crystal Reports, click Apply and then OK. It will copy all of the necessary runtimes into your lib folder and will even update your web.xml to include the stuff needed for CR. On the left, you should see Crystal Reports File Versions. Click on that and you should see the version of Crystal that was just installed into your web app along with all of the files that were copied or modified.
    You could probably then create a report viewer in your other app (maybe an iframe?) that includes a link to the report in the CR Web App.
    If you need more assistance with this, let me know. I'd be glad to help out as I've already played with something similar to this.

  • Crystal Report issue : Error in file.. .rpt . Error in formula

    Hi ,
    I recently migrated a report from production to test environemnt and it throws me the following error:
    Error in File C:\DOCUME1\oe_user\LOCALS1\Temp\packing instructions {4058873B-9756-4052-B479-EBD2D0A08E7D}.rpt:Error in formula  <Object_Visibility>. '{Command.EXACT_WEIGHT_FLAG} = "Ne (No)"'
    This field name is not known.
    In production server is installed Oracle 9i database and in test server is installed Oracle 10g
    The report has 1 main report and 2 sub reports.
    1. The same report works fine in production server without any issues.
    2. I had executed the report in Crystal reports 2008 and it runs fine displaying all fields without any issues.
    3. I had also tried taking the query of both subreports and the main report and tried executing it in oracle and it runs fine without any issues.
    However during the runtime in the test server, it throws the following error.
    Can someone help me out with this issue..

    Hi Siva,
    What is the patch level of CR 2008?
    Is it a win or a web app?
    What is the server OS?
    First, try to simply view the report. Let  the report prompt for the database credentials and the parameter values if any.
    See if it reproduces the issue.
    ReportDocument rd = new ReportDocument();
            rd.Load(Server.MapPath("CrystalReport.rpt"));
