CS-4 After Effects ans .ffx extension templates

I tried importing .ffx extesion from Adobe bridge into AE CS-4 and AE says it does recognize the file type.. These are standard templates
I thought this worked before and I dont know what I changed?

remeber I believe it worked before. But to your advice do I just go to thr Rffects and Presets and right click to reset presets (I think I did that).

Illustrator and after effects workflow - versions and templates

Hi all
I'm looking to take some templates from illustrator, across to ae, animate and have a master version for a template.
Is there a way I can easily copy my master AE file, and then replace all the master illustrator files within it, with the new versions for a new template, so that everything animates the same etc, but if I change some text or something, the change will come in. I will be creating a bunch of pre animated symbols that can just be dragged and dropped, adding universal colour controls and converting any text to editable to use animation presets etc. So in the main, this versioning won't matter as most of it will be done entirely in AE without a regular graphics program. HOWEVER. I want my workflow to be sensible and I don't want to end up making copies of crap or working inefficiently.
I'd normally just copy and paste a new illustrator file over the top, same name, same layers. That works ok. However with this I'm gonna need versioning etc/ or to at least know which illustrator file is different.
I DONT want this work in a way that I wouldn't have to go into my layers folder and copy and replace each layer!!
The only way that I've come up with is to keep my masters as masters. Folder them away and never touch them other than to copy them.
Copy the masters into a new titled folder. Then open up the AE proj and rename that. Now my main problem is replacing the Illustrator files. My first idea was to rename the master files. Hopefully after effects would still understand where they are and not make me replace these layers?
Then once they are renamed, bring in the template to over write them, copy and replace, and it should all be hunky dory.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about or experienced creating templates like this before?

You seem to understand the basics here but let me make a few points just to clarify what has to happen to make your workflow efficient and keep the animations working.
You can save any After Effects project file as a template by doing a save as command from the file menu. That will get you to step one. If you created your project by importing your master Illustrator file as a composition with either option selected you can automatically replace all of the layers in the project using a single right click browse and click if you follow a couple of rules.
The AI file must have exactly the same layer names, number of layers, and layers must be exactly the same size
The AI file must have exactly the same name
The replacement file must be in a different folder
Follow those rules and you can just open the Illustrator template, select the folder with your replacement footage, and then select one of the layers in the you want to replace and choose replace footage.
A simpler option, the option you described as setting up a bunch of duplicates, would be to create a new folder for each of your versions. Create your master Illustrator file and AE project inside the Master older. Now Copy and paste the original AE file into each of the version folders. Now simply open each Illustrator file inside each version folder and edit the content making sure that you follow the rules above. Now when you open the AE file inside the Version folder you will not have to replace the footage.
Here are a few problems with this workflow. First, your animations may not work if you change the size of any layer in the AI file. Second, you end up with a bunch of duplicate file names on your system. Third, It's hard to keep things straight.
There are other approaches. The first would be to create an animation preset for each of the layers in your master file. Just press UU to reveal all changed properties in a selected layer, select everything that is animated. If there are expressions in the layer make sure the properties with the expressions are also selected then go to the menu and select Animate>Save Animation Preset. When you have all of the animated layers in your composition saved as animation presets you can then start a new AE project, import your AI file as a composition exactly as you did before, and then select the layers one at a time and apply the animation presets to the appropriate layers.
This avoids the duplicate file name issue and allows a different version for each Project.
Another option is to use scripting to create a script that replaces all layers in a composition with a new source file. Here again, you must design your animation to either work with layers of different sizes or all of the layers in the new footage must be exactly the same size as the original master AI file.
Probably the best option would be to design your project so that the majority of the layers would be the same and come from a master file, then add another file that contains only the elements that you want to change. Most of my template projects involve text changes only and the text does not come from Illustrator, it comes from text layers. I'm referring to lower thirds. In that case I use a script that creates comps from spreadsheets. I simply load up the master template file with the master artwork, have a spreadsheet created with the data I need to replace, then run the script and a project with a bunch of new comps is automatically created and sent to the render cue to create the digital intermediates or sent to the Adobe Media Encoder for rendering the deliverable files.
To tell you the absolute truth, most of the work that I do that seems to be kind of like the work you are describing just involves opening an Illustrator file as a comp and applying a few animation presets to the layers. I have about 300 custom animation presets in my library that can be used on any layer of any size to create motion. Here's one of my favorites. It causes any sized layer at any scale to fly in, bounce then drop out of the frame no matter what size the comp. The only thing you have to set is the in and out point of the layer.

After Effects and Photoshop suddenly crashes on startup

Hi,
I have a licenced version of Creative Suite CS5.5 and working on Windows 7
Yesterday I worked with Photoshop and After effects, ans ome things in illustrator as well. Everything worked well, I closed the programs for the day, and turned off the computer.
To day, when starting again, AE wont start, it crashes on startup, leaving me error messages

(with different numbers every time)
At the same time Photoshop Extended also has the same issues - crashes on startup, regardles if I start 32 bit or 64 bit version. PS does not give any error messages, it is just a message from Windows telling that it has stopped working. Tjis always happens at "Initializing menus..."
I have not downloaded anything since yesterday or done any changes to the computer. I have now uninstalled PS and AE, and retarted the computer and then installed again. Excatly the same thing happens...
Any idea what this can be caused of?

I have now uninstalled the whole suite, then restarted the computer, installed the suite again - same result. So strangem since it worked before, and I just did not do anything wuíth the computer... Other programs in the Suite is working.

You have an issue with your graphics card driver. Update it and configure it properly.

Adobe After Effect used in Harry Potter !

Dear friends this might sound a bit childish , but I couldn't help myself to ask this question here !
I have seen all the films and I wondered if Hollywod used Adobe After effect anywhere in their HP films !!
I know some of the plug ins (Red Giant, Trapcode Shine, Glow) are capable of doing some of the things that its done in the movie !
But just carious , if AE is doing the job or there are other programs that might be used !
Any Ideas !

That depends. Many shops don't want to publicize that they use AE on final shots for feature films. This only tends to re-inforce the fact that other shops don't mention it either.
Unless a shop specifically tells Adobe we can talk about it publically, we keep our mouth shut.

IMPORTING AFTER EFFECTS FRACTAL NOISE?

If I create a fractal noise comp in AE that is the same dimensions as the photoshop file that is going to be used for printing then will that after effects fractal noise comp be suitable for high quality printing? I am not using fibres as I find it not particularly useful or easy to use as fractal noise in photoshop.

You can do that in several ways:
1. Yuu can use dynamic link from AE to PPro - that mean you don't need to render anything from AE. More on that: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Adobe Dynamic Link
2. If you are using newest version of AE/PPro you can use something valled Live Text Templates. More on that: After Effects Help | Live Text Templates or Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Live Text templates
3. Or if you need to render from AE and import footage to PPro you have to render that footage with codec that gives you alpha channel, and you have to turn on alpha in AE export settings. more on that: After Effects Help | Basics of rendering and exporting

QMaster and After Effects 6.5

I'm having an issue with QMaster 2.01 and wanted to know if anyone else using QM and AE 6.5 is having the same problem.
The issue occurs when using the QMaster application to create an After Effects 6.5 render job.
Here is the scenario:
1. Open QMaster.app
2. Select the "Generic Render" Command
3. Click the "+"
4. Using the After Effects 6.5 Command Template, build my AE command, for example:
/Applications/Adobe\ After\ Effects\ 6.5/aerender -project /Volumes/BrianRaid1/projects/ae/qmasterTest/qmaster01.aep -s 1 -e 150 -i 1 -output /Volumes/BrianRaid1/projects/ae/output/pbreak.\[\#\#\#\#\].iff -comp "comp1"
5. Click OK (return to QM.app main screen)
6. Enter "Batch name:"
7. Click "Submit".
Upon clicking "Submit", the QM.app closes unexpectedly but does NOT generate any error messages, and the batch is NOT submitted. I've checked the Console Logs on the QM Client, and the QM Controller/Node and can't locate any Error messages indicating a problem.
I've also discovered that if I do NOT specify the "-comp comp1" in the QM options field this behavior does NOT happen and the render job is submitted. However, without specifying a specific AE comp name, AE ignores the Start/End Frames values as well as the Output location, essentially does not provide the required results.
I'm running OSX 10.4.2 on the QM client. I've also replicated this behavior on two OSX 10.4.2 Server machines.
I can successfully run the AE6.5 command manually (from a Term window) on my client as well as the target QMaster node machines.
QMaster.app works as expected when "Maya" is selected as the QM "Command".
I'd welcome feedback from Apple or anyone who can replicate this issue or has experienced similar problems.

If you're not familiar with AFX then I strongly suggest you get the Adobe Classroom in a book for AFX and do a crash course in it. AFX is something you can figure out, but it's confusing at the same time.
As for getting footage back and forth, I export as a QT ref (recompress all files is unchecked) and use those files. I then export from AFX in the native format that my FCP project is in (in my case it's DV/DVCAM).
Workflow varies on the project.
If I have essentially a sequence of video that I'm going to show all together, I'll build that into a sequence in FCP and export the sequence. For other things, I'll import each thing clip by clip.
Automatic duck will save you a lot of time if you can afford it. you basically build the basic feel of your piece in FCP, position, size, speed, sequences, etc, and then it enables you to bring your FCP file right into AFX where you can then do what you need to do for it.
I can't help you in the HD dept, I've only dealt with SD in AFX. Easiest way to get your resoultion right is to drag a clip that you brough in from AFX to the "Create a Composition" icon in the bin area. That'll copy the settings from that clip and turn it into a composition.

After Effects error: Can't import "---.ffx" : unsupported filetype or extension. (0 :: 1)

I am running into this issue with Adobe AE CC 2014 with both Mac and Windows versions in a classroom. Macs are running Mavericks, Windows are Win 7. Mac version of AE is 13.1.1.3. All CC 2014 apps are up to date. If I have a text layer selected and choose Animation > Browse presets… and then in Bridge double-click the effect preview to place that preset in AE, I get the above error. If I right-click the preset, the Place in After Effects option is greyed out - both Mac and Windows. However, I can apply the Preset from within AE using the Effects and Presets panel or using Animation > Apply Animation Preset just fine.
I have researched this issue and have found references going back to 2008 but without any actual solutions, only work-arounds. I have uninstalled Both AE and Bridge and reinstalled on both Mac and Windows and yet the problem remains. A fresh user account on the Mac has the same problem. I have trashed prefs and the Adobe Application support folder from the user library folder. The AE script is enabled in Bridge. Some systems have only ever had CC 2014, others have CC and CC 2014. On the dual install system, the double-click method in AE CC works as expected, but fails in CC 2014.
I hate to have my class leave without me showing them a solution. I'm hoping it's something simple that I'm missing, but so far the solution seems to have eluded everyone who has posted on the subject.
Any suggestions from those with hands-on experience with this issue will be greatly appreciated.

How can I change the language of after effect or creative cloud for a while .. ( I have bought a template which expressions are in english )

hello, I think that this problem has to resolved if it's not yet.. I am on creative cloud in french and all my APPS are in french
I have bought a template for after effect on video hive and its expressions do not work because they are in english..
what can I do ? ,
except changing the language and if it's the only solution How can I do that ? just for a week .. I don't want to keep an english version

running After Effects in English, even if you’ve installed and activated it in another language

Bridge .ffx files (text effects) no longer open up in After Effects 2014?

I am having an issue trying to get the text effects (.ffx) in Bridge (that use to open up in After Effects just fine) to open up in After Effects 2014 latest update. Is there a work around, setting or alternative I can use?

Adobe After Effects CC not converting all files from templates

Hello, I recently purchased Adobe After Effects CC, and i've been using Videoblocks.com for some After Effects templates. I've used them before on a different computer running AE CS6, and they work perfectly fine. However on my computer, it does not convert the files in order to be compatible with the CC Version, like this:

As if the files never fully converted over, however some do? Any explanation on how I could fix this from not happening? Would greatly appreciate it.

Hey Mylenium, I reinstalled Quicktime and the problem still seems to be there. I'm not really certain what other Third-Party CoDec I should install/reinstall. It doesn't seem to retrieve some JPEG and PSD files, which I have Photoshop installed as well, so I don't exactly know what I should do.

Extension Manager not finding After Effects CC

Hey all,
I have been having a bit of an issue in regards to Adobe Extension Manager. I just installed the new CC version, and wanted to install an extension to Adobe After Effects. However, it does not show up on the Extension Manager screen:
As you can see, it shows some of my other CC programs, but not After Effects. I used Adobe Extendscript to print out a log. Can you help me figure out what I need to do to install this extension to After Effects?

This is as designed. Extension Manager doesn't support After Effects. If the extension you want to install is a .ZXP file, you can install it anyway. I guess it will be shown in "Others" after installation.

What After Effects template is this and how can i get it?

There's nothing there but some vector artwork, trapcode, fractal noise, illustrator artwork, bad typography (editorial comment), some blend modes and a little animation. I doubt it was a template. It's not very modern.
If you want to really some interesting work try looking on Behance. You might even find some free downloads. It's one of my favorite parts of the CC experience. I especially like this for pure graphics and it's from a new AE user.

Working with after effects templates?

Im trying to use a motion vfx, after effects template. Is it possible using dynamic link to bring individual clips from perm pro and drop them directly into after effects?
Any ideas would be helpful.
I want to avoid exporting individual clips and then re import them into AF.

When you "replace with AE Comp" it should take you to Ae ... you do your work there including choosing any template or effect ... then save within Ae. That automatically updates the clip back in PrPro to what you've just done. Exit Ae, go back into PrPro, keep working. Don't think I left out anything.
The first time I tried this I made it FAR more complicated than it is ... and it wouldn't work. Came on here, was told ... you over-complicated it noob, just ... do this, nothing else. I said thank you kind sir and ... voila ... it worked pretty dang slick. Now, I don't go to Ae often, so I'm still a TOTAL noob when working "over there" ... but getting there & back again is easy. Wish is was easy over there ... ah well ...

After Effects error: Can't import file "(FILE TITTLE)" unsupported filetype or extension

Hello so I was working with AE3 for 2 years and i had no problems with it but.. when i reinstall my windows and install AE3 with same installation file as always i was using.. and I got problem. When i try to import AVI or wmv or other video clips except mov format I getting this error "After Effects error: Can't import file "(FILE TITTLE)" unsupported filetype or extension".. i tried everything: 3 different installs of AE3 but nothing always same.. so decided this is windows problem so I installed new one with SP3 but i got same problem then I tried it on SP2 but still same problem.. So i installed windows7 and my AE3 was working but i didn't liked a windows 7 and i back on xp SP3 and guess what guys? yes! i got same error again on AE3. I don't know guys what to do. Can you help me?

I assume that you mean "After Effects CS3". After Effects 3 came out more than a decade ago.
Do you have QuickTime Player installed? After Effects requires QuickTime to be installed to import some file types.
Could you be explicit about exaclty what files you have tried to import? Even giving file names might help. For example, this error has been seen when the characters used in the file name were non-standard characters (e.g., this thread).
When you re-installed Windows, did you also re-install any codecs that you may have previously had on the system?

Is there a way to force GPU acceleration when using After Effects template project?

I am using the template feature in after effects to create most of my text in a timeline, for about five minutes of text I am sitting on a half hour render. There are two Quadro K4000 GPUs that are spiking at around 8%. Does any one know of a way to force premiere to utilize the GPUs more fully?

If the After Effects comp is in the timeline, Premiere Pro does the render. At least that's what I'm seeing. Even if the comp is first rendered in After Effects, putting it in the Pr timeline gives the red line. I don't know why you are seeing such long render times just for text -- seems odd. I tried it for a five-minute text comp on Win 7 and it took about 15 seconds, and only used the CPU.
I remembered seeing a way to tweak the nvidia card to use it more efficiently. Never tried it but here is the link in case you want to explore. The Quadro K4000 is on the list there. Let us know if it helps at all.
