CS 5 healing brush looking pixelated

Hello,
I've noticed in the last few months that whenver I use the healing brush for cleaning up skin tones, areas around the eyes that the brush has been creating pixelated splotches across the area instead of blending in with the skin the tones. I've tried the hard & soft brushes as well changing the degree of hardness (between 0-25%) and it still shows
pixelated. Also the brush icon would disappear while I'm retouching.
Either I have to close the brush palette and reopen it, or worse case close photoshop, reopen it so the brush icon would reappear.
I don't know if it's because it's PS 5 or the software is showing it's age.
I have a MacBook Pro early 2011 running 8GB memory. I don't think it's a Apple memory issue.
If anyone else has had a similar issue or may know the cause of this I greatly appreciate some feedback.
Here's a screenshot showing the healing brush splotches. Normally it blends in, but it hasn't. Also the cloning tool has been doing similar. Not smooth cloning..
thank you in advance..

Would you believe me when I tell you that I don't use layers?
I mean I have in the past if it's something that is going to print or for a client.
Currently, the images I'm working on is for my website. I have the final & original files
but when it comes to web images they (final image) ends up being smaller files.
Your suggestion of just changing the brush to harder worked.
I reset the brush presets and hopefully that will clear up the brush's disappearing trick.

  • My brushes look pixelated. What's going on?

I started Ps today and when I used the default soft round brush, it looked like this.
The other brushes also look similar, like pixelated.

Add the Dissolve blend mode to your ideas database as great for a chalk on blackboard effect.

  • Healing brush is semi-transparent

    I have Windows XP, sp2, Photoshop CS3.
When I drag the healing brush over a section I want to heal, the sampled color looks just fine, but when I release the mouse button, the area turns semi-transparent instead of keeping the full color. I thought there was a problem with my transparency setting, but I can't seem to find where to view that, and I don't think this is the issue. If I drag the brush over the same area a few times, the area does not become more opaque.
Perhaps I should mention that I usually use the brush to repair the borders of lines that are too indented to fix with the smudge, and I need to fill out the line a bit; the designated healing area usually has a background that has been made transparent with the eraser tool.
Thank you so much for any help anyone can give me, I really appreciate it!

The healing brush samples pixels of the surrounding area to be fixed. In areas where adjacent areas are different from target zone you can run into problems. Like OldBob says the clone stamp may work better as one can pick the area you are cloning from easier.

  • Problem with Healing Brush Align Function

I am running Photoshop CS5 on a Mac and I am having some trouble with the healing brush tool.
The behaviour seems to be the same whether I have 'Align' ticked or not.
I first select the area I want to sample from using alt-click. I then use the healing brush to paint over the area I want to repair. The cross-hair showing where the pixels are being sampled from moves as I move the brush around. I assumed this would only happen when 'aligned' is ticked but it happens all the time, meaning it paints unwanted pixels.
What I want to do is keep sampling from the orginal point, not for it to move as I move the brush.
Is this expected behaviour or am i doing something wrong?
    Many Thanks

It really would be good to be able to see a sample of what you're getting to make sure we're on the same page.  Do you have another browser you could use?
How hard is the brush you're using to paint with the Healing Brush?  I find that a hard edged brush often works best.
The Healing Brush tool derives the color it uses for mixing from its surroundings, and it can often look further than just the adjoining pixels.  If you use it very close to a place where the color changes a lot you'll see something like what you're describing.  I just avoid using it near contrasty places and if I see this I just use other means - e.g., the clone tool.
Note the difference in results below, when the Healing Brush tool is used on these two spots with the same brush:

  • Healing Brush Problem (PSCS5)

Hi there, today my friend was creating tilable textures using the Offset tool, and then taking the Healing Brush tool to fix up the bad edges between the tiles. This has worked forever on his PC, but now suddenly is causing distortion when he uses it. Instead of having a soft edge to the healing brush marks, it comes out with distorted, pixelated edges.
    Things to note:
    • all other tools with soft edges work fine
    • if the file is saved out as a different file format the problem is saved with it (still visible)
    • only happens in CS5
    • the pixelation on the edges of the brush strokes are solid color and don't look the same as what happens if turing a layer to dissovle or anything
    • Photoshop CS5 Extended 64bit, Windows 7 64bit, GTX 260
    -Thanks

So let me make sure I fully understand what is being attempted:
You're using the Healing Brush to essentially clone pixels from another part of the image to an area of the image that's transparent.  You expect the soft edge of the brush to leave the edge of the result soft.
I think I can reproduce what you're seeing.  Notably the blending doesn't seem to work properly either.
Here's what I see while brushing, then after I let up on the mouse button:
I think the real problem here is that it really doesn't seem to make much sense to use the Healing Brush on a transparent part of the image.  It's prime function is to mix the result in with the surroundings.  What are the surroundings in a transparent area?  At best, you might hope to get white pixels there.
Some ideas that might help you work around this issue:
    1.  Use a layer mask to manage the transparency, and have the pattern entirely there in the image.  In other words, separate the texture prep entirely from the transparency prep.
    2.  Use the Clone Stamp tool instead of the Healing Brush if you really need to brush over transparent pixels.

  • Spot healing brush for video

Hi - I am working on some video where I need to remove sensor dust. I have tried the clone stamp stuff in AE CS5, but for this footage the healing brush in photoshop seemed a better proposition (the content aware variant). The method I tried was importing the video, adding a normal (non-video) layer and then use the healing brush. Issue is that the healing brush takes the content/fill from the first frame you started using it on; i.e. it doesn't continuously update based on the video underneath. Not so much an issue if the footage is somewhat static, but when there's a fair bit of movement then you can run into situations that you replace a dust speckle on a wall with a bit of sky!! (i.e. not ideal!).
Would there be any way around it? (i.e. getting the brush to continuously sample the video layer underneath).
    Many thanks, 3dmus

Let me start by saying I have zero experience with video, but...
Since the Content Aware Fill function goes looking for appropriate matches elsewhere in the image (in the same frame, I imagine, for video), and I don't think you can definitively predict what it will do, is this the best approach for video?
I have this vision of a spot in successive frames of video being filled with slightly different info each frame, and thus looking rather weird when animated.
Maybe something like a Median / Fade Darken activity on a small selection encompassing the sensor spot would be more usable, as it would use the pixels in the immediate vicinity, and be more predictable?

  • Healing Brush = Clone Stamp when used on separate layer?

I can't find corroboration on the web so I want to konw if anyone here has seen this - when using the Healing Brush tool in Normal mode, the opacity of the cloned pixels when painted onto the same layer as the source pixels will usually be decreased to blend better, BUT if the cloned pixels are painted onto a separate layer (to work non-destructively) the tool will NOT decrease opacity and the Healing Brush will work more like (if not exactly like) the Clone Stamp - true??

Hmm, It seems to be working differently for me now. Probably me being tired . I guess I'm just learning how it works. Here are some tests I just did. The top left is a cloned section using the Healing Brush with the "Current Layer" setting - looks identical to the original (even when not sitting on top of the original bg layer), and also looks just like the Clone Stamp (using either setting). The  bottom left is a cloned section using the Healing Brush with the "All Layers" setting – NOTICE THE BLENDED OPACITY (as one would expect it to work).
I guess this is the normal difference of the two different Healing Brush settings...?
I'm working in both CS5.1 and  CC (trial version). Thanks.

  • How come every time I use the healing brush tool or patch tool it smudges?

I just want a solid change to the pixels that I've selected but instead it just creates smudging because it's trying to blend the pixels for me when in reality I don't want that. The only way I remember how to change this is through hardness but my hardness is at 100%. I'm working on an advertisement for the National Museum of Crime and Punishment in DC and I'm there nw trying to get this done.
    Please help,
          A college intern in need

yes, lots of option and learing curve steep.
When you have spot healing brush active look at the toolbar that shows size of brush, mode, etc.  Mode should be in Normal unless you want special effects.
Also, since this is an auto program, if you have the brush size too large it will sample a larger area, which can introduce artifacts you don't want.

  • Photoshop CS5 Spot Healing Brush only blurs

Here's a before and after shot.  I recently upgraded from CS3 and the spot healing brush always worked great.
Now when I use it, whether or not I use content aware fill, it leaves a blurred residue of what I was trying to remove.
As an aside, the Content Aware Fill leaves a similar residue, enough to make it effectively unusable.
I have included a sample photo of the spot healing brush problem.  Left side is before and right side is after.
I just wanted to get rid of the electrical wall socket.  You can see that it's not working.  I am running windows 8 in a 64-bit environtment and running the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5.5
Any assitance anyone is able to afford me is greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with your choice of Spot Healing Brush for this image. I cropped your screenshot to the "BEFORE" image, removed the "BEFORE" type (with the SHB) and scaled to 600% to match your original document.
A dab of a 0% hardness 500 pixel Spot Healing Brush in Ps CS5.1 on OS X 10.6.8 worked perfectly. However, I would have made a vertical stroke with the brush at about 80% hardness and about 200 pixels, which also works for me.
Maybe your SHB is working in "Create Texture" mode despite specifying "Proximity Match" in Options bar. Try resetting the SHB by right-clicking its icon at left of Options bar and picking "Reset Tool" from the menu that appears.

  • Spot healing brush with content aware or proximity match?

I want to do the following:
    1. get rid of wrinkles, blemishes and dark circles under the eyes
What is the difference between using the content aware option and the proximity match option with the spot healing brush? Aren't they both blending surrounding pixels to get rid of the blemishes, wrinkles and dark circles?
    Thanks.

Proximity Match is how the Healing Brush works, it takes the surrounding pixels and blends them together with the underlying stuff. Content Aware on the other hand tries to recreate the texture based on the surrounding pixels so it doesn't blend with the pixels that you just painted over. Try both, see which one produces better results for you.

  • Spot healing brush preset

Hello. I have a couple of hot pixels on the sensor and removing them individually from each picture is time consuming. Is there a way to apply the spot healing brush on one picture where needed and copy the brush strokes onto the other pictures since the spots remain stuck in exactly the same places on all images?
In other words I'd like to batch-heal all images at once.
    Thank you,
    David

do I need to open the image as a smart object to follow your guide?
So, first I have to make a selection/s and then Edit - Fill - ... ? If so, which tool would be best to make my tiny selections?
No, it doesn't have to be a smart object.
I'm kind of envisioning tying an action to a key that you can press when you're editing your document and want to make the change, but how you want to use it is entirely up to you.
Actions can seem a bit geeky, but once you get the hang of recording your steps as actions, and get used to the editor in the Actions panel, they can be quite useful for making repeatable functions that can be surprisingly complex.  To record an action, name it appropriately then just do the operations you want to repeat on a representative image, then stop the recording.  Brush strokes won't record, but most everything else will.
Since hot pixels affect probably 1 or maybe as many as 9 pixels, I'd suggest just using the rectangular marquee tool to make the very small selections (you can, of course, make more than one by holding down the shift key).  Note that this assumes you'll be using the same sized images each time, and as I mentioned the locations will be different for a portrait and a landscape image.
    Have fun with actions!

  • Clone Stamp & Healing Brush and alignment

I have PSE9. I am having excellent success in removing collars from the dog pictures I am working on when using the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush tools in combination. The book I am learning from says if I want to select pixels from a single source to deselect the align option. However whether I have the align option selected or not, I am getting the corresponding crosshair sampling pixels as the tools are brushed on the image. I know I can do even better if I can maintain a single sampling source. How do I select and maintain a single sampling source for these two tools? Thanks, Jim.

Thank you for your response, but forgive me for asking for clarity. I will be removing alot of dog collars. The collar is red and is surrounded by white and black fur. Just to make sure I understand, as I use the two tools, even with the Aligned option deselected, I will need to keep identifying source pixels multiple times as I brush out the collar. There is absolutely no way ((I tried the single click) to select one source and brush wherever I like on the photo and remove the replace the pixels with the one source. Thank you for your patience, Jim.

  • Problem with Advanced Healing Brush on LR 5

I am experiencing a problem with the Advanced Healing Brush  on LR 5. Using, say, the Heal option, when I have marked the area I want to heal, and then move to the source I want to copy, I cannot get the colour of my selected source point to remove the heal spot.
I have looked at a number of tutorials and working comments on using this function, and I am pretty sure that I am following the correct procedure for using the Advanced Healing Brush. I have the same problem when I try to use the Cloning option - the colour just does not fill the area I want to fix.
Is there possibly a bug hanging around?  Can anyone give me any possible solutions to my problem?  I so want to try out this terrific new feature in LR 5.

    Thanks for your response
    I attach 2 screenshots
Screenshot1  - See the orange tip of a feather behind the kid's head - I want to remove this with the heal option in the Spot Removal tool
Screenshot2 - I have demarcated a piece of the feather with the spot tool and have chosen the source color of the wooden bench
I was expecting the demarcated area to have adopted the chosen source color, but it hasn't, by a long shot. I've tried evry which way to get it to work, but no luck.
I even tried using the Clone option, choosing the same source color and painting over the orange feather, but that also didn't work.
I look forward to your comments
Sorry - forgot to add the images

  • Clone stamp and healing brush issue

having problems with photoshop 5.5... new issue for me, as there weren't any issues yesterday. both the 'healing brush tool' and the 'clone stamp tool' are giving problems. when i press the alt key to collect an area to sample, on my screen it looks as tho the hand tool engages, and there is a second (copy looking) image moving around my screen over the original. i've already tried the 'tool reset all' function and rebooted... still haveing the same issue. anybody have some advise? help a guy?

thanks soooooo much... not sure how i managed to select the 'show overlay' box... but i had. free at last!

  • Healing Brush's sampler remains active, wreaking havoc

I am a first-time user of Photoshop Elements (8, just arrived today), but I think I've discovered a bug:
When I try to use the Healing Brush, I Alt+Click on an area I want to copy, and then begin painting over the blemishes. However, the pixels replacing the blemishes are NOT what I clicked on, but are constantly changing, and I see a second cursor over to the right that is sampling pixels as I paint/heal. If the second cursor (which moves in lockstop with my mouse movements and the cursor I'm controlling, but off to the side) moves over a black spot, my brush paints black; if it moves over a thick line, a thick line is painted in the area where I want to "heal."
Is this an undocumented feature, a new bug in APE8, or what?
IOW, rather than continually applying the same thing (what I Alt+Clicked on), the Healing Brush is mirroring whatever the "ghost" cursor is over.

You have the overlay option turned on. When you drag rather than click, the healing brush and the clone stamp will automatically sample in a pattern following the movement of the brush, beginning where you alt clicked. You can turn the overlay off in the options bar, but you can't keep these tools from going into aligned mode when you drag. (The overlay is new; the aligned-when-dragging behavior isn't.)
The dark area under the cursor is to show you your stroke more carefully. It has no effect on the final result any more than the marching ants type outline in previous versions. It's just a visibility aid.
