CS2 clipping paths incompatible with CS3 indesign

Hi there
I need to use photoshop images with clipping paths that were created in photoshop CS2 in a indesign CS3 doc (working on a mac OS X 10.5.4). I import the image ok, the trouble is every time I try to activate the clipping path I get the spinning wheel of doom and the application stops responding.
The image opens up fine in CS3 photoshop, there only seems to be a problem with the path itself which I've tried copying onto other images which I know work and it does the same thing with them.
I used the image in indesign CS2 as a test and it worked properly, which is why I think the 2 packages are incompatible.... oddly enough, I'm using some really old images which were created before CS was a glint in the milkmans eye and they work perfectly.
Does anybody know a way around this, or indeed if this is a bug or something?
Thanks

It is a bug but Adobe fixed it.
If you want to use EPS files with clipping paths, that is fine, but be aware that there were problems that InDesign recovered from about 2 years ago. I wrestled through that time with many problems with clipping and have lots of documentation I never want to drag out again.
The thing is to have everything updated. Files that were saved will not be fixed by copying paths, you need to re-save the files in an up-to-date version of Photoshop by doing 'save as' to overwrite.
Sorry you're having this problem, it stinks but was remedied in updates. Try one file that you know doesn't work and do the save-as to see if that fixes it. Open and save in the latest CS3 version of course.
Get rid of your CS2 InDesign. Use CS3 only.

  • Incompatible with Adobe InDesign (Error code: 14)

    Hi all,
I've been having major problems with InDesign CS3 and OS 10.5. It always crashes when I try to Place, Export, Save As, anything that requires it to navigate the finder.
Now, while trying to export to PDF, the document froze. So I had to force quit it. Now ANY InDesign file I try to open gives me the error message:
The file "file name" is incompatible with Adobe InDesign (Error code: 14).
Has anyone experienced this? I'm now stuck as I cannot open anything to get some work done.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi all
I have the excat same problem. Indesign CS5 and also my CS4 comes op with the error code 14.
It qrashes before I get into the program, also when I open it throug the program Icon and not the file.
    I have tried:
    Restarting
Shot down and take out the power cord for severeal minutes
Deleting the preference files "Defaults" and "SavedData" manualy
Deleting the file "InfoPlist.Strings" in folder "itlproj" which was a folder that keept showing on restart. (it was a italian languae to a dropdown shadow throug Flash CS5)
Remove indesign CS5 and CS4 (with the program uninstall icon) and reinstalled it
I have no clue to what more I can do. Think it could be a system fault. I have the following:
    Mac OS X Version 10.6.8
    Dual core Intel Xeron
    Snow leopard
It just suddenly didnt work. Couldnt copy paste text from a mail into a file in Indesign and then it just crashed. Havent installed any new updates or programs so it is very weird.
Any help would be very much appriciated

  • Clipping paths inverting in CS3

I see that this has been discussed previously, (http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c05af0b/12) but the topic is now archived so I wondered if there are any new thoughts on the matter.
Images with clipping paths that work perfectly in CS and CS2 are coming into CS3 with the path inverted. The clipping paths are set up correctly in Photoshop, so it's not the paths that need to be fixed. Now I know that a simple fix is to go into Photoshop and create a mask using the path, but we work on catalogues with hundreds of images that are supplied to us with clipping paths - seemingly standard practice for the image libraries that are supplying the images.
Our catalogues/mailers are weekly productions so we have 5 on the go at any one time and that means a lot of images - up to 300 for each publication. Thankfully it doesn't affect every image!
I can't determine why it happens to some and not others, but it is definitely frustrating. We also have to redownload the images for each publication, so we end up fixing the same image over and over again. This is a consequence of how the image libraries that we are working with operate - we are not allowed to keep a copy of the images.
Has anyone come across a way around this, other than editing in Photoshop? Any suggestions gratefully received.
    Steve
    Indesign CS3, 10.5.4 on 3.06GHz Intel iMacs

Yes the images that invert are RGB, but then so are the ones that work perfectly - and all of them worked OK in CS2.
And yes, the path is set as 'subtract from shape area' - and THAT appears to be the difference between ones that work and ones that don't work...so what does that mean? Again, all the images worked fine in CS2.
Does it mean that CS3 (Photoshop/Indesign) is messing up the paths, or does it mean that CS2 (Photoshop/Indesign) was more forgiving? Unfortunately we no longer have CS2 installed so I can't test that.
Even though it is fairly simple to fix, and there are various ways to fix it, the problem still remains the amount of images that are affected and that we can't make a permanent fix to the images. next time we re-download them from the image libraries we will need to fix them again.
Perhaps I need to flag the problem images to the image libraries, but I want to be sure of my facts first.
    Thanks for the input guys.

  • White outline on outside of clipping pathed images brought into InDesign

Hi. I am on a PC using CS6.
I created some clipping paths in Photoshop on a bunch of images and most of them have a white outline (even in Overprint Preview) shown in InDesign.
I thought I was being careful not to be too close to the edge in order to not get that white outline. I created the paths using the pen tool and path palette.
Please take a look at the screen shots below and I was wondering if anyone has this problem or if there is something I am totally missing.
As you can see in this photo the white outlines are around part of the box and most of the separate pieces of chocolate. This is a screen shot from InDesign.
This same image is below shown in Photoshop with a black rectangle placed behind it and I do not see the white outline. The outline shows in the PDF too when exported so I don't know what to do and I worried it will print this way. Never had this problem before..

Willi, I used your suggestion and I didn't know what I was doing, but it seemed to have worked. I followed that tutorial from that link I posted earlier. I guess I didn't have to worry about a background image. I wonder why that happened, I've never had this problem before.
I used a Photoshop image rather than a tif file. I tried using a Photoshop file earlier on in the game and had the white edges still, but did not use the Alpha channels.
Thanks all for your help and awesome time-saving tips!!!

  • Clipping paths not recognized (in InDesign)

Some of my coworkers brought me some files that don't allow the clipping path to be selected in InDesign. These images are saved as PSD format, have a good path drawn and saved. When placed in InDesign, the option to use the clipping path or not is not even available, and the image is not clipped by default. If I place a file showing the import options, I can turn on the path, and it places on the page properly. But invoking the Clipping options in InDesign still shows Photoshop Path as unselectable, but it is checked as it is turned on.
Saving the path as simply a regular path, or as defined as a clipping path, in an EPS file gives me the correct options to use the path in InDesign. Simply resaving the PSD file to another file on my desktop does not fix it.
Is there any way to see what is going on in the file? Though it manifests itself as an InDesigns option problem, the error is inside of the Photoshop file. There is no way to resave the same image document and have it work properly.
The only way for me to "fix" the file is to make a new doc the same size, copy the image, paste into new document, copy path, paste into new doc, and save as a new name. Then the "started from scratch" file works properly.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

@WasDYP: It's only a couple of files so it's not something I'd think anyone could recreate really easily.

    I´m a student, working with indesign CS3- it won´t

to work (f.e. reader). What can I do?

    Hi Mylenium
After updating the adobe license didn´t work any longer for the
second time, since I bought. First time CS3 cleaning tool was the
solution. But this time it is not possible just to open the
CS3cleaning tool document(PDF)- not with adobe reader, also not with
foxit for example. I removed all adobe stuff to install again, but
installation doesn´t work for  the important components- photoshop
etc. At first also adobe reader didn´t work (System told me, to
install photoshop before:-) But after some deinstallation and
reinstallation now just the new downloaded adobe reader X happily
works again. Only solution to reinstall the whole system?? (medion

  • I am running Mac 10.8.5 and am trying to use CS3. Support says system is incompatible with CS3. It was running fine. Tells me License for this product has stopped working.

How do I get CS3 to work in this system?

    designshed,
As I (mis)understand it, you have had CS3 running successfully on 10.8.5.
Have you tried reinstalling the full three step way: Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall?

It is crucial to follow all the initial steps precisely.

  • Bring in another .psd file with the clipping path

Okay, this client has a very odd request. They want a collage of images put together in one file and they want the clipping paths to be attached. Then it's to be saved as an eps file. I'd like to do this in InDesign and am going to be posting this same question there as well. I like that in InDesign, the clipping path stays attached to the image when you move it. However, is there a way to do this in Photoshop? I don't know how to bring .psd files into Photoshop along with their clipping paths. If there is a way to do this, is there a way to link the clipping path to the layer so that when I move the individual layers, the clipping path moves with it?
Help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

In Photoshop "Clipping Path" is a special kind of Path and limited to one per image and not linked to one Layer.
A work-around to combine multiple images with individual Clipping Paths into one psd file with a combined Clipping Path could be
    • applying the Clipping Paths as Vector Masks to the images (flattened to one Layer or converted to a Smart Object each),
    • combining them and after positioning/transforming/…
    • copy/pasting the individual Vector Masks into one new Clipping Path.

  • Bring in .psd file along with clipping path

Okay, this client has a very odd request. They want a collage of images put together in one file and they want the clipping paths to be attached. Then it's to be saved as an eps file. I'd like to do this in InDesign rather than Photoshop because the clipping path stays with the image in InDesign when you move it. However, I don't know how to save the file as an .eps file with the clipping paths attached. I open the .eps files in Photoshop and there are no clipping paths present.
Help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

My suggestion is to compose the entire collage in Photoshop. And if you need to preserve the clipping paths of each image of the finished collage, then convert the clipping path to a vector mask. Then you can drag a layer (that will include image and path) into one photoshop file to make collage.
Here are the instructions from previous post to convert a path into a vector mask.
To create a vector mask in PS, select the path in the Path Panel, then under Layer menu > Vector Mask > Current Path.

  • EPS photos with Clipping paths dont show in Quark Xpress

Anyone experience why a Photoshop file with a clipping path will not preview when brought into Quark Xpress unless I save the preview as a tiff?
    I use photoshop 7.1.

From desktopublishing.com's review of QuarkXpress 4
"The ability to control a picture's appearance in several areas. For example if you want to make a specific part of an image transparent, simply specifying the part using the clipping paths, the alpha channel that is embedded in the original picture, or the white area of the image. It can also read clipping paths in either TIFF or EPS format. Trapping tools and supports most popular color spaces, including Hexachrome, are also included."
and according to Wikipedia, Xpress 4 was released in 1997, eleven years ago with 4.1 coming two years later.
So, while I was just guessing thinking back over the last decade of versions, I was not far off, and I can't remember ever having a clipping path problem with tiffsthat version. Of course, if you didh't save the clipping path as a Clipping Path in Ps, then you would have a problem. That has been fixed now too.

  • Need to find if Images applied clipping path(detect Edges)

    Hi Scripters,
How to find Images applied with clipping path(detect Edges) in Indesign document.
Could anybody please share a code/script with me.
    Yours,
    Jerome

No problem -- a document's "allGraphics" property lists all of the imported graphics in the document. Just check each of them one by one. This little script alerts you with the name:
    for (img=0; img<app.activeDocument.allGraphics.length; img++)
    if (app.activeDocument.allGraphics[img].clippingPath.clippingType == ClippingPathType.DETECT_EDGES)
      alert (app.activeDocument.allGraphics[img].itemLink.name);

  • How do I save a clipping path in Photoshop so that Quark gives me the option to change the path opti

I created a clipping path on a photo, clipping out a person's head so that I can have the person's head show up over the masthead on a cover.
But when I save the photo in Photoshop and then import it into Quark, the option where it says I can change the clipping options in Quark is greyed out.
This is what it says to possibly fix it on the Quark help page:
"You may want to choose "None" from the Clipping path pop-up menu when you save the image from Adobe Photoshop, so you can specify which path to use as the clipping path when you import the image into QuarkXPress. Or, you may want to choose a path from the Clipping path pop-up menu, so you can be sure only that path will be used to clip the image."
I don't understand what that refers to....I can't find anything like that in the Photoshop options.
My goal is to have the person's head over the text, with the rest of the photo still retained in the background. As it is now, I just get an import of the clipping path alone, with Quark substituting the background part of the photo with a white box.
    Thanks!

  • Help! Getting clipping paths back on exported lightroom images!

    A bit of a problem.
I have 22,000 images, half of which were colour corrected in lightroom, but all 22,000 were exported from lightroom.
So, out of the 22,000 exported files I don't know which ones were colour corrected or not, which is not important until I realise that non of my clipping paths stayed with the exported files.
There were clipping paths on about 6,000 of these images.
So first, is there any way of finding from the exported files which ones were worked on in lightroom?
Secondly, is there a clever scripty way of bringing a clipping path from one photoshop file to another photoshop file (pixel perfect).... preferbly maybe having a folder full of doner files that have the clipping paths that a script gets their clipping paths and puts them onto the photoshop files in the second folder (the two folders will have files with same file names?)

Unless you specifically set Lr to overwrite the original export creates anew file, which doesn't include layers, clipping paths, Smart Objects and a bunch of other Ps stuff. Hopefully, your original with clipping paths is still around because that's the only way you're getting them back.
BTW: as you've discovered, editing an image in Lr after t's been edited in Ps is leaving yourself open to a world of hurt, especially when the image includes editing features that Lr doesn't support.

  • Missing Menu items - (Clipping Paths) InDesign CS3

I've logged this before but had no success. However - I now know what's causing my problem.
Ever since CS2, we've had a problem with missing clipping paths. We get the same in CS3 where Object>Clipping Path loses the 2 sub menus (Options and Convert Clipping Path to Frame). This problem seems to be on the increase and I'm having to fix about 10 per week on a base of 200 machines.
If I log on to the faulty machine as a different user then it's OK (so it has to be preferences - doesn't it?). I don't want to delete prefs as we have certain settings which we want to keep. And then I discover that if I simply replace the InDesign contents in Applications, it fixes the problem.
Because this is a very quick fix, and production being production, I didn't get time to work on the problem. But eventually I got a clone of a failed machine and was able to get to the problem.
    Domain/(domain name)/Users/(Users name)/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/InDesign SavedData.
If I move this file between machines, I can move the fault around. If I bin the file, it gets recreated and all is OK.
From what I've been able to discover, a combination of SavedData and InDesign Defaults make up the InDesign Prefs.
So, the question is: what problems could I generate by binning SavedData every time a user logs on to the machine??
As an aside - I thought initially that the SavedData file was giving the error when it reached 11.4 Meg, but then I find machines with 12 Meg files which were OK!

"binning"? Is that like deleting or throwing out the trash?
If so, I see no ill effect from deleting the 'saved data' file. Only if InD crashed last time it ran, you will lose the recovery of the last document(s). Deleting the other preferences or defaults will only reset InD to its factory defaults. If you have settings like special hyphenation, object or paragraph styles, preferences for workspaces or toolbars in single column or layout of pallets, you will lose those.

  • Converted clipping path to frame (InDesign CS2)

I am working with files where the person has converted clipping paths to frames for the images. I need to resize the images but it leaves a blank silhouette of the hollowed out space (where the image was) and a view in the background of the full image, including the background. I'm new to InDesign and need to find out how to resize these images or how to undo the convert clipping path to frame. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

How are you trying to resize the frames now? Try Pressing Ctrl + Shift BEFORE you click the mouse on a sizing handle and drag. (you shouldn't need to press the keys first, but there was a bug in CS3 and I think it may still be in CS4 on the Windows platform).
You can also use the scale tool (hold shift to size proportionally) or use the SCALE fields -- the third set from the left, not the second set which are height and width of the frame only -- on the control panel or in the transform panel. These scale both content and container together.
By default the scale fields will say 100% after any transformation, and ID expects you to input percentage values in them and interprets numbers without units as per cent, but you can enter any value you like as long as you specify the units, so you can put 3in into the width field and the frame will become 3 inches wide. Scaling using the control panel is relative to the control point in the proxy on the left end, so if you select the upper left point, the upper left point of the bounding box will remain stationary and everything else will move toward or away from that.
