[CS2, CS3] Drop shadow exceeds picture frame

Hi there,
maybe this is a well known effect, if not for myself ...
If you apply a drop shadow to a placed image that has a clipping mask active, you may end up with a shadow area that falls inside the images picture frame as well as outside of it.
This is OK up to a certain point but what if I have to crop the image on one side or the other? The shadow may exceed the picture frame now where I actually want it to be cut. [Hopefully I am making myself sufficiently clear ...]
So is there some option connected to the drop shadow feature to restrict the shadow to the
inside of the picture frame?
Thanks
Klaus

I have experienced similar issues both with clipping paths and with drop shadows. I teach a class for Indesign and an image in one particular exercise I use has a clipping path around a head+shoulders shot of a woman. The path is a P'shop path created from an alpha channel.
In InDesign the image is on top of a tint background which is on a separate layer. The clipping path is not clipping the full image but is leaving a fine, white, unclipped border around the image area (may be only a single row/column of pixels all the way around). As the clipped image has a drop shadow applied in exactly the way David describes, the drop shadow is also applied to these "unclipped" pixels around the edges.
I confess that, as this is just an exercise and has never gone to print, I had not noticed this. One of my students did notice it because he had experienced the same problem in preparing a print job and it had cost his company a fair amount of money to correct it.

  • Illustrator cs3 drop shadow

I'm trying to add a drop shadow in Illustrator CS3. Unfortunately, when I select the object & choose Effect>Stylize, only glowing edges is available. How do I access drop shadow? I also tried filter>stylize & glowing edges was the only option again.

    Cheryle:
You are accessing the Photoshop Effects section, move up to Stylize in Illustrator Effects (upper part of Effects menu).

  • Drop shadow effecting text frames

    hello indesigners.
i am applying a drop shadow to a text frame, and its getting applied to other text frames on the spread, and also i can see a slight colour change to my images as well.
    what is happening?
    thank you.

Drop shadows are transparency effects, so the preview redraws the spread showing the transparency flattening. There is a well-known "emboldening" effect for text on screen when transparency is used, and it can show onscreen in your PDF and low-res prints, too, but is usually not a problem with press output. Color shifting in the images probably means your transparency blend space is out of synch with the images.

  • CS3: Drop shadow always on

I can never open the Transparency dialog without the drop shadow being on by default. If I select an object with no drop shadow applied and then open the Transparency dialog, the drop shadow suddenly applies. I've set the drop shadow to off with no document open but it still insists on always being there.
The gradient feather option behaves the same way although it is not quite as persistent as the drop shadow.
This is becoming extremely annoying to the point where I'm beginning to cringe if I need to use transparency.
    iMac G5, OS 10.5.5

I think I figured out what was going on. I have a custom key command set up to bring up the Transparency menu. However; the key command was applied to the Drop Shadow specifically and not to the Transparency dialog box. This is why the Drop Shadow was on every time the Transparency dialog appeared.
I've reset my keyboard command to Transparency and not the Drop Shadow. Now when I hit my command I get a clean Transparency dialog with nothing already on. Much better.

  • Export to PDF, loss of shadows + picture frames

I like to use Pages features like shadows and picture frames on photos (using Inspector > Graphic). I then export my Pages document to PDF to send for professional printing, but when the PDF is opened on Windows machines at the printer, the shadows are gone, and the photo inside the picture frame is totally missing. Some of the picture frames will stay in the PDF without the photo, and some will completely disappear along with the photos. I have confirmed this when viewing on a friend's PC also.
I've tried both standard Pages exporting AND printing to PDF from the print dialog box, both fail.
I searched the forum high and low and was pretty surprised to find no one else discussing this issue. Any suggestions on how to work around this and preserve the shadows and picture frame treatments on PDFs viewed on Windows machines?
(Note: I have already tried converting the PDF to a JPG or TIFF file using Preview, and that essentially works, but there is enough loss of DPI to cause concern at the printer, and besides, its just not ideal to print professionally from those formats).
Also it would be amazing if there were a printing company out there who printed color & full bleed jobs directly from Pages files on their Mac- anyone know of one? That would solve the whole issue of having to fumble around preparing files for PC viewing. (Oh if it were only a Mac world)...

I agree with kirbot -- Apple includes nice templates that are obviously meant for professional printing in reasonably large quantities. Regardless, there's no good reason I can think of why Pages' PDFs are not truly WYSIWYG in their output. That shadows and other things are not exported as part of the PDF is a really dumb idea on Apple's part.
Just ran into this issue myself and had to ditch all the drop shadows in my brochure in order for the files to work with my online printer.

  • [AS] [CS3] Enable Drop Shadow

    Dear all,
Having problems to apply drop shadow to an rectangle/textframe
    Would love help with this one;
    tell myObject

    As of CS3,drop shadows are handled via the various (fill/stroke/content/all)<br />transparency settings. This should give you an idea:<br /><br />tell application "Adobe InDesign CS3"<br />    tell active document<br />        tell page item 1<br />            tell transparency settings<br />                set properties of drop shadow settings to {mode:drop, use<br />global light:true, opacity:80.0, spread:20.0, blend mode:multiply,<br />noise:5.0, x offset:"1p", effect color:"Black"}<br />            end tell<br />        end tell<br />    end tell<br />end tell<br /><br /><br />-- <br />Shane Stanley <[email protected]>

  • Drop shadows not working in firefox

Just designed and posted a splash page. In safari it looks great but in firefox the drop shadows don't load. Any ideas? My luck my client will be on firefox LOL.
    http://www.lombardikitchenandbaths.com

That's a well know problem with FF and iWeb. Adding drop shadows, borders and frames to objets on a web page can add a lot to the "weight" of the page and result is slow loading of the page.
Tried to view your page and got a "The server does not respond at all." response.

  • Drop Shadows not showing up with iweb 2.04 in firefox please help!

Drop Shadows on my frame are not showing up with iweb 2.04 and firefox please help!
They show up with safari but not firefox. I've read that publishing to mobile me solves it but I publish to my hard drive and ftp to my host (not mobile me).
    Thanks for any help

Drop shadows, borders etc are a bad idea in that they increase the file size and the download time of your page.
Create your image, drop shadow etc on your iWeb page, take a screenshot, crop it and replace the original image with the, much reduced, JPEG>

  • Masking unwanted sides to drop shadow effect (AI CS2 Mac)

I've got a problem with drop shadows in CS2 (Mac). Can anyone help? I've applied an offset of zero and a blur of 1mm which works fine but the object is at the corner of the artboard and the shadow spills over onto the pasteboard and leaves a fine line showing when imported into InDesign (at the edge of the graphics frame).
Can you tell me how I can loose the shadow on the two sides I don't want it? I've tried creating a clipping mask behind to paste it into but I loose the solid area of the object (with the shadow) that I'm pasting in to the mask.
    Many thanks,
    Bob

I don't see a problem. A clipping mask should work, but perhaps I might not be following the description in your second paragraph correctly.
Could you clarify, preferably by providing a screenshot that illustrates what you get and what you want to achieve?

  • Drop Shadow Frames

I've been trying to put a different frame around my pictures.  I've received many helpful tutorials on how to do it.  Most all tutorials just quickly jump through changing the canvas size.  The say things like - "well I'll just add xx to the canvas size".
What's my problem ... I would like the frame to be full picture size - like 4x6, 5x7, etc.  When I just guess on the canvas size, I get erratic results.
Can someone help me internalize how to get a more full size - more consistent frame around my pictures.

There are 2 issues here. If you want to have the picture 6x4, you can add a simple frame via Edit>stroke:
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1RuUPfTogJ7FbYY2sOUeoZrQ98MAL
This picture was cropped to 6x4, and the stroke was placed inside. It remains 6x4.
If you wish to add a drop shadow, yet have the picture itself remain 6x4, you have to have additional "real estate", i.e. expand the canvas.
Please post the tutorial so that we can review it and provide suggestions.

  • Drag and drop picture frames in Photoshop Elements 11 from one file to another?

    Hello,
    I am a digital scrapbooker.
I recently started using Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. I previously had been using Elements 7. I make extensive use of Picture Frames i.e "Basic Black 10px", and in Elements 7, it was very easy to drag and drop a picture frame from one file to another. (I use a separate file for each scrapbook page, and I often move pictures between  pages as I scrap them)
In Photoshop Elementa 11,  I can drag and drop a picture frame from one file to another, but ONLY if there is no picture in it. If there is a picture, I cannot drag and drop - the circle-slash icon appears showing that it won't land. I was able to do this in Photoshop Elements 7, whether or not there was a picture in the frame.
Any ideas of what I might be doing wrong, or did Photoshop Elements change this functionality?
    Thank you!

I think this might be a bug in pse 11, at least on the windows version.
You might try right clicking on the frame layer in the layers panel, choose Duplicate Frame Layer and pick your other document as the destination.

  • Why Cant I Add Drop Shadow? artwork size & resolution exceeds the maximum that can be rasterized

I am making a sign for sign writing. The overall size is 2400mmx1800mm. so its quiet big.
But When I go to put a drop shadow behind it it comes up with this -
" The combination of artwork size & resolution exceeds the maximum that can be rasterized"
Why is it saying this? How do I put a drop shadow on it?

Try scaling the sign down to 600 x 450mm and building your drop shadow at a more manageable size.  When you deliver your file for output, tell the vendor to enlarge the file 400% in the RIP.  If it still will not work, check your HD for scratch space.  If there is not enough memory available to run the operation, you will continue getting the message until you clear some space and/or increase your RAM ( if necessary ).

  • Drop Shadow On Placed PDF Illustrator CS2 XPSP3

    Hi,
Is it not possible to add a drop shadow to a placed PDF in Illustrator CS2? I'm not managing.
    Thanks for any help,
    Ariel

I don't have CS2, I have CS4.  If you, or someone else, generate in CS4 a PDF in Illustrator and save as Illustrator PDF, then open a new AI file and Place the vector graphic(s) the drop shadows work on the artwork itself.  If you generate a vector graphic in Photoshop and save the file as a Photoshop PDF then Place it in Illustrator, it will create a drop shadow around the bounding box of the canvas that you had in PS.  I will now try to use a Photoshop PDF with an Alpha Channel and delete the background, save it as a Photoshop PDF and see if it will generate a drop shadow around the artwork, rather than the bounding box.  Stay tuned . . .

  • Drop Shadow Problem in CS3

I'm running PS CS3 in Win7 and have noticed an odd problem.  I have a psd with a layer in which I've knocked-out or erased the background.  I've got a forground subject and the rest is transparent.  I've got another layer beneath it.  I had a drop shadwo and when I increase the Spread all is ok.   Then I increase the Size and I see a whole bunch of drop shadows that have nothing to do with the forground subject.
There's something there in the layer to cause the shadows.  I've tried several different layers with different colors to reveal whatever is there.  I can't see anything.  However if I use the wand, I can select "something".  If I erase or mask in the location of the drop shadow, it disappears.  Something is there, why can't it be seen?

Something is there, why can't it be seen?
Because technically, even 0.00001 opacity is not 100% transparent and you are human - your eye can't discriminate such small differences in color and your computer can't display it to begin with, either. Beyond that you have pretty much answered your own question - they are stray pixels with very low opacities and you have to clean them up properly.
