CS2 doesn't recognise NEF files

Just purchased new Nikon D3 to replace a Kodak SLR/n. The NEF files are not recognised by either my Mac-based CS2, Bridge or ACR. There is no NEF plug-in in any of the File Format folders - how can I find one to install?

James, you will need to download the DNG converter to convert the NEF to DNG in order to use CS2's Camera Raw.
Or you could update to CS3 (and the latest versions of Camera Raw) or go the Lightroom route (see the Adobe website for more info)

I have a family video DVD that was originally on tape, but is now on disc. I want to import it onto my MacBook to edit and store. However the files are IFO, BUP and VOB and the Mac is saying 'unable to import' as it doesn't recognise the file. Help please !!!!!

Those are the constituent parts of a standard mpeg2 DVD. Storing them is easy: just copy the folder to your hard drive and they will play in DVD player or VLC.
But that format is not intended for editing. To do so:
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

My iPad will only recognise photos when I connect an Sd card with the camera connection kit. It doesn't recognise video clips from the same card?!

Most probably because your camera records videos into MTS files, which aren't cmpatible with iOS. Read http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/playing-back-1080p60i60p-non-mov-videos-right- your-camera for more info and the alternatives (preprocessing ("remuxing") on a desktop etc); don't forget to follow the iVI review link at the bottom if you have a Mac.

  • Camera Raw Doesn't recognize nef files

I have CS4. I upgraded camera raw plugin tp 5.6. I am shooting with Nikon D7000, Getting error message that photoshop does not recognize nef files. Please help.

Check the ACR downloads for updates.  Your camera is probably newer than the version of ACR you have installed.
And despite using the same extension for their RAW files, Nikon changes the format of the data inside NEF for every camera - thus requiring ACR to be updated for each camera model.

  • Lightroom doesn't read NEF files

Last night, I scanned some negatives with my Nikon LS-5000. I thought I'd save them as NEFs, so I tried a couple. Unfortunately, LR 1.1 doesn't read them.
I just ended up re-scanning and saving as 16-bit TIFFs, which will work fine.
I'm guessing Adobe probably won't add support for this since film isn't too important anymore. Does anyone have any comments regarding this shortcoming?
    Thanks,
    Jay

This issue is well documented. It's not a LR issue. Nor is it a Photoshop issue. A Nikon Coolscan NEF is not a raw file. It is a proprietary linearized format that only works within Nikon software. Save your scans as TIFFs unless you plan to exclusively use Nikon software to process them.
There are NEFs .. and then there are NEFs.

  • Elements 6 for Mac doesn't recognize NEF files

When I try to open a Nikon RAW image (NEF) in Elements 6 for Mac I get the following message, "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file."  To work with RAW is the whole reason I bought the Mac and also bought Elements!  I also bought Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac the Missing Manual and followed the instructions on page 41 to set the File Associations.  The Association for Nikon was already set to Elements.  I also tried to follow the Tip on page 43 to change the application which opens a particular type of file and the "Change All" option is not an option as it's light gray.  My equipment is brand new, the software is brand new (no upgrade) and I can't do something that seems like it should be straight forward.  I've tried everything I can think of, can anyone help me .... please?

I shut everything down and when I tried again it worked!!  Thanks!

  • Photoshop Doesn't recognize .NEF files

I just bought a new Nikon D5000.  I took the SD card out of the camera and put it in a card reader and used the Adobe photo downloader to download the pictures.  Then when I went to the folder in Bridge, there were only default NEF thumbnails.  When I try to open them in photoshop, I get this message:  "Could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file."  What's up with that?  Am I missing a plug-in or something?  Everything works just fine with Fuji's RAF files.
    Please help,
    Danny

Thanks!  I had to get the beta version of ACR 5.4 and now it works great.   The link to adobe labs had a typo in it, "http://http//www...." which I thought was kinda funny, but everything works now.
    Thanks,
    Danny

  • DNG converter 7.1 doesn't see  NEF files

I've been using a previous version (4.5) of the DNG Convertor without any problems.
    I downloaded 7.1 version after buying a Nikon D800.
However when navigating to folders the program sees NO  files (D800, Nikon  D3, RAW, jpg.  or otherwise) saying "no items match your search" once the folder is opened.
Please help.  Computer is Windows PC running Vista Home Premium.

    Jim,
Please see my response to your answer on the adjacent posting - just to reiterate, I can see and try to select a folder I know to contain NEFs, but the program says "no folder selected" so that's that basically it and I can go no further. I've been using an earlier version of the dng converter which behaves in the way you outline with no problems at all. However I need the new version for D800 NEFs. I've tried to post a screenshot of the window where I select a folder. - I see the image isn't very clear but I've selected a folder outlined in blue on the left in the browsing window and the large window says "no items match your search"

  • ITunes doesn't recognise iPod+files on iPod not recognised (1415)

OK, I try to structure the whole thing .... i Tunes doesn't seem to recognise iPod, iPod ejected on connection, 115GB of 'other' data on iPod, nothing plays on it.....
    1) When connecting my iPod to iTunes it tells me to restore iPod.
    2) The iPod itself disconnects itself from iTunes (showing 'OK to disconnect' on iPod screen). The 'OK to disconnect' stays on the screen even after disconnecting the iPod completely. Rebooting the iPod reveals 123GB of 'Other' data. When selecting Music it shows 'No Music', going to playlists 'No playlists' etc. In setting it says 115GB used, 32.9 GB free. 0 Songs, 0 Videos, etc (all 0).
    3) On the iTunes side I get the iPod tab with just the summary tab (no music tab, no photo tab, no nothing).
On the summary tab I have one button I can't click (something irrelevant in this case anywah) and the restore button. Clicking the restore button extracts some software and then gives me the error message 1415 that it cannot restore the iPod.
    4) The very first error message calls my iPod by its right name (iPod 160), whereas the iTunes window (and it's name in the lefthand side device list) calls it just 'iPod'. It renamed it when I did a restore attempt earlier in the week. Does this contribute to my woes.

OK, apparently nobody can help .... BUT: solution found! A chap from John Lewis recommended to connect the offending iPod to an apple mac. The apple mac recognised it as an iPod and asked to restore it. And it did. Then connect back to a PC and presto, you restore it there. I'm glad I did no cold formatting etc. on it. I wouldn't have had a clue what I was doing.....

  • Speedgrade doesn't recognise my files they are AVCHD Video (.MTS)

Hello That my first time I'm using speedgrade and I do see the box with the names of my video file, but I don't get a previews I did shoot the footage with a sony vg20.
thank you very much ,sorry for my English.

If you have access to the CC versions of Sg, you've also probably got access to PrPro. The way the Adobe stuff is designed is that PrPro is sort of the 'entry' program for footage. It handles nearly every codec except some of the RAW formats and most variable-frame-rate stuff (cell phone 'footage' et al). Or you can say use Adobe's Media Encoder (also on the CC list) and transcode to take either AVCHD or MP4 footage into perhaps DNxHD for grading into Speedgrade without using PrPro.
Speedgrade's design team works on the grading end of things, and kinda figures that PrPro & AME can do the heavy-lifting to get other codecs into a usable form. Like many folks these days, I use both PrPro & Speedgrade ... so I load a project into PrPro, start some basic editing ... and the direct-to-Speedgrade link is so fast that I'll take even just sections or clips from sequences at times and run over to Sg, check out what they grade like ... then go back into PrPro. Takes seconds each way. And that way, ANY format that PrPro can use loads into Speedgrade without a hitch nor hassle. No XML files, no EDL's, no DPX, no transcoding ... slick as anything.
So, no, it isn't actually completely ridiculous ... though it can be a bit annoying. Look at the files Sg handles "native" ... things like RED, Arri, Alexxa, that sort of thing. That's because it's designed to do dailies with the most heavily used major cameras for large projects. I've always kind of wondered, as many tv stations as use cameras that shoot AVCHD, why that wasn't on the list but oh well. They figure for "regular" work handling things coming in from a PrPro project works great, and why re-invent the wheel when it works just great in PrPro?
For grading, Speedgrade is an awesome program. Though I can certainly give you a critique of both where they've done incredibly well and where they, like any other human, could perhaps improve something maybe. And they have heard plenty of those comments direct from me ... and when I got down to NAB last March, they were still thrilled to meet in person the guy that complained so much. Really nifty group of people working on it.
So join the group ... and feel free to complain about things! Hey, the rest of us sure do ...

  • NEF files from Nikon 1 v1

Hi, I'm trying to open NEF files from my Nikon 1 V1 in Elements. I'm using the Adobe DNG converter version 7.2.0.46 but it doesn't recognise NEF files from the V1. Any ideas please?

  • Aperture does not recognise TIF files from Nikon CoolScan

The TIF files from my Coolscan are good in every other application, but Aperture does not recognise them. I've tried re-saving the TIFs as JPG and PDS but Aperture doesn't recognise any file generated from the TIF. Maybe it's something to do with the scanner driver? Any ideas how to load these files into Aperture?

You might check the color space that is assigned to the files. If you are using Nikon Scan software to manage your CoolScan, there is a preference for setting the color space of the saved file. FWIW, Nikon CoolScan .nef files are a 'raw' file, not camera raw, that was/is a Nikon proprietary format for their scans. If you use the Nikon Scan for image editing, the edits are non-destructive in saved files and can be adjusted by re-opening the file in NS. Adobe first made editing camera raw available in early 2003 and the Nikon format preceded that. Nikon's camera raw format also has the .nef extension, but is not the same as the CoolScan .nef-- really confusing. I suggested checking the color space, because Nikon has different internal names for Adobe RGB(1988) as well as their own Wide Gamut space.
All said, I've not had a problem opening .tif scan files in Aperture.
