CS2 PROBLEM -- ANY MODERATELY LARGE OPERATION SHUTS DOWN MY LAPTOP
Hi. Need help, if anyone has recommendations.
I have Photoshop CS2 on my traveling HP Pavilion zd7000 laptop. 4 gigs of RAM. About 3 gigs of available C drive. Any time I try and paste an image larger than 5 megs, my laptop uddenly goes completely dead. Similarly, if I suceed in pasting something of 1-2 megs in size, and then try to move it, my laptopgoes completely dead. Black screen, power shuts off, everything -- just plain dead. And when I reboot, nothing since the last save has been retained.
Suggestions, anyone?
If you only have 3 GB of space available on your hard drive, you need to free up space. You should have no less than 15% of the drive capacity free, and for Photoshop (and its very large scratch files) I would suggest at least 15 GB if 15% is less than that. Your computer makes lots of temporary files while doing almost anything, and when Photoshop is being used it makes some really huge files -- huge enough to store each layer of your image for each of the steps in the undo list. If you have a 1028x1028 pixel file in 16 bit per channel RGB, each layer with image information is going to require 6 MB uncompressed, and each layer mask will take up at least 1 MB. If you have 10 layers, 5 with masks that means your scratch file has to store 65 MB for each history state. Do a few brush strokes and you are up to 20 history states, or 1.3 GB for editing a measly one megapixel image. And Photoshop opens a blank scratch file that is considerably bigger than initially needed so it doesn't have to keep going back to the OS and ask for more file space (which will result in fragmentation and takes additional time). So that seems likely to be the main problem.
If that doesn't solve the problem, I'd bet your processor is overheating and causing the shutdown. Have you cleaned all of the air vents and made sure all of the fans are working properly? Also, try putting the laptop on a laptop cooler. More drastic solution is to open it up and replace the heat transfer compound connecting the CPU to its heat sink, but only try this if you know what you're doing; you will certainly void your warranty.

I believe my MS Word app on my Macbook just crushed and I could not shut down my laptop. I'm afraid the machine might overheat. Pls. help, anyone . . .
Tnx, Steve. I actually had that concern about force quitting the machine as suggested by 'shldr2thewheel'. Since I'm new to Mac, I went to several training sessions at Apple store. I remember in one session, the Apple Associate cautioned or rather dissuaded us to resort to that method. Instead, I simply allowed the machine run out of battery without closing the lid. Anyway, tnx for the inputs guyz.

Can't shut down my laptop automatically
hello frnds ..
I have one laptop and configurations are like XP , T61P . The problem I am facing is that I can't shut down my laptop automatically , I always have to hold the power button for couple sec and then its going to shut down .Even I have formatted the whole system and re-install XP , but still the same problem like before .
Any help ? I will be thankful
Regards
Rimzuone possible problem may be you have lots of processes running in the background. Other than that all I can think of is a registry tweak that changes how long it takes to close programs on shutdown. I can't think off hand of what it is, but there are countless examples of this on the internet you can look up.

Yesterday I shut down my Laptop.
Today I started it and wanted to use LR but it said "registration required" but I intalled AND registrated LR 2 years ago. Since then I never formated the Laptop. It came all of a sudden.
I still have my Key and everything but I'm affraid that if I use it a 2nd time on the same computer, I will not be able to use it on a 2nd one
How could that problem be fixed?
As I said, it was already registrated for 2 years on that exact same Laptop and there was no formatation what so ever
Thanks in advance
PThis may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs? -

Mail is open but it is frozen, being this the reason why you cannot open the Mail window. Press Alt, Command and Esc keys or go to > Force Quit, select Mail and force quit it. Finally, you will be able to turn off or restart the MacBook

Sleep or shut down the laptop?
Is it better to sleep or shut down the laptop? I mean in general for the laptop, not necessarily to save battery or anything. Thank you!
No need to shut down unless perhaps the laptop is going to be in a travel bag for a while.
I just close the lid to stop using; open the lid to use.
I've been doing this routine since OS X 10.0. -
CS2 gives login error message and shuts down automatically
Hi,
I hope someone can direct me to a quick fix for this because I just shot a wedding and need to be editing ASAP. I turned on PhotoShop CS2 and after loading it gives me the error message saying somehting to the effect of "Your username, login, organization, or serial key is missing or invalid. Photoshop must shut down". My copy is registered, and I have the loging info and serial , but I cannot do anything at all in the program. It doesn't give an option to re-enter my info. It just shuts itself down. I use it all the time and have had it on this computer since 06 so I have no idea why it's doing this now. Any help tonight would be great.
Thanks in advance.
ScottSystem specs, please. Is CS2 installed on a 64 bit operating system?

When I on my Laptop, Acer Aspire 5735 with Windows 7 Ultimate run Firefox all runs perfectly smooth, all is working as expected, but when I go to Sleep mode or Hibernate (Firefox remains open) after turning on Firefox is not active any more, all open tabs are there but surfing is unavailable. Firefox reports message that it is in Offline mode (but menu File > Work Offline is not checked and if I check it and uncheck it again it doesn't have any impact). Which means If I open new tab and write web address it wont open, if I click any link in opened tabs from before, it wont open anything and it will show message that Firefox is in offline mode. After that I shut down Firefox by using Close(x) button and it disappears from desktop but it remains in memory and active processes not allowing any other instance of Firefox to be run. Finally I shut it down on force (End process) and start another instance and all works perfect. I am not sure is this only my problem with hardware/software configuration so I wanted to share this.
This is a pain but I have resolved it. This is instructions for Windows 7 but it may be the same on other Operating systems.
Note: "''YOUR USERNAME''" relates to the account you log on to Windows with.
# First go to control '''panel / folder options''' and ''uncheck'' ''''Hide extensions for known file types'''', ''check'' ''''Show hidden files and folders'''' and ''check'' ''''Show hidden operating system files'''' then click ''apply'' and ''OK''.
# Go here :''' C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\''' and copy the '''Profiles''' folder to your desktop.
# Go here : '''C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\''' and copy the '''Profiles''' folder to your desktop. You will need to rename this as you already have a Profiles folder so name it '''Profiles2'''.
# Uninstall Firefox (''selecting to remove all user settings'') then go here: '''C:\Program Files\''' and delete the ''Mozilla Firefox'' folder.
# Go here : '''C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Roaming''' and delete the ''Mozilla'' folder
# Go here: '''C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Local\ '''delete the ''Mozilla'' folder.
# Open another browser (i.e.'' Internet Explorer'') and download and install ''C-Cleaner'' here: [http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard]
# Once installed run the ''''Registry cleaner'''' over and over until no problems are detected and exit the application. You may now uninstall it but it is probably one of the best free apps available as it has a better uninstaller than Windows does and controls which programs run when Windows starts without using the 'msconfig' command.
# Now download the latest version of Firefox with your other browser and install it then run the application once and close it down.
# Open the ''Profiles'' folder on your desktop and inside you will find one or more folders with a name ending in '''.default''' (i.e. ''uomifhku.default''). Right click each folder and select '''Properties''' to see which contains the highest amount of data or the bigger file size. Once you have done that open the largest folder and make sure there is nothing in there with '''... @security.compass''' written on it. If there is then delete it. Hold your ''left'' mouse button and move your mouse pointer over all of the files to highlight in blue. Put your mouse cursor on any one of the files, ''right click'' and select 'Copy' to copy them all to system memory and then close the folder.
# Go here: '''C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles''' and find the folder ending in '''.default''' then open it. Now ''right click'' anywhere on the background in the main Payne containing the files and select 'paste'. When prompted to '''Overwrite Files''' and '''Merge Folders''' always accept and proceed. Once done, close the window.
# Open the '''Profiles2''' folder on your desktop and inside you will find one or more folders with a name ending in '''.default''' (i.e. ''uomifhku.default''). Right click each folder and select '''Properties''' to see which contains the highest amount of data or the bigger file size. Start Firefox and if all is well you should be working again and it back in the state you left it last without the bug.

CS2 Database file - Damaged Error, program shuts down
32mb InDesign file with 50 pages of text and hi-res color images. Just after saving and trying to scroll to another page, images were grayed out and an error message came up stating the database was damaged and InDesign was shutting down.
Reopened InDesign and same error. Restarted the Mac, opened the file and the program rebuilt the file, seems to be OK. I have 3.5mb of memory with InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, Excel, Acrobat and Safari all open. MAC OS 10.4.11
Any clues on what might be causing this problem??This is the window I received.
edit* looks like pics don't work here
What is it supposed to do and how do I un-install it.....have removed all traces of JAVA & downloaded fresh, still nothing
Any ideas?

I recently shut down my MacBook Pro for the first time in a long time. SInce then, everytime i reboot or awake my laptop from sleep, the Mail app opens unprompted causing my computer to slow down incredibly, and some apps to freeze. I have no idea how to stop this or why it even started doing this. Any ideas on how to get it to stop? Thanks!
I have this problem too with my Macbook Air. Mail opens automatically every time my laptop sleeps. I actually just asked about this in my own thread. However, it is not causing my apps to freeze.

Problem with iBook having to shut down...
The past week or so, my iBook has been freezing up and the screen goes black. A box comes up saying "your computer needs to be shut down" in several languages. It seems to happen most often when I'm running iTunes. Safari has also been freezing up often and I have to force quit it because it is "not responding." My iBook also seems to be making the louder "whirring" noises more often than it has ever done before, even when I'm not running a lot of programs at once or doing anything that requires a lot of power.
My iBook is only a few months old, I bought it in November. Can anybody help me out with what could be wrong???
Thanks!Duane,
I have not tried rebooting from the Hardware CD and at the moment I don't have the disc with me. I am going to try to get ahold of it as soon as possible (although I won't be able to get it for a week minimum) and try using that.
In the meantime however, my iBook doesn't seem to be doing any better. Today alone, all of a sudden all this text came up on the screen and it froze up. I had to restart it. And later today, the screen just flat out froze and I had to restart it. I'm really worried that the problem is just going to keep getting worse and there's not much I can do about it right now. If I have to, I can make it to an Apple Store sometime in the future but it's a bit of a journey from where I am and I don't want to have to go unless I absolutely have to!
Thank you for your help and any further suggestions would be appreciated! -

Problem deleting photos and cannot shut down or log out
I have managed to put a whole lot of photos on my desk top which I want to transfer to the trash can (over 5000). When I moved them to trash an error message "Item ....jpg is used by Mac OSX and cannot be opened" and you have to press OK. This is happening for every photo. It won't let me shut down or log out. I don't want to have to press OK 5000 times. Can anyone help?
Dr Bettina, I had similar problems with Mavericks. I installed it on a Mini and a 13" MacBook Pro. I can't speak to your disdplay issues, but I can confirm the inability to logout, shut down, or restarft without a forced, power button shut down. I can also report frequent System Prefs freezes and finder issues, like folder contents taking half a minuite or more to render, or not appearing at all. And while a few Adobe CC apps actually ran faster, InDesign ran like molasses uphill in Decemner.
I tried uninstalling or disabling numerous 3rd party apps and pref panes. I unplugged everything but the keyboard, ran DiskWarrier, repaired permissions, did fsck -f, trashed various preference files, reinstalled the OS... You name it, and I tried it — short of a potion using eye of newt.
After two days of totally hosed productivity, I restored OS 10.8.5 on the Mini so I could actually get some work done. However, I've decided to leave Mavericks on the MBP as a sort of crash dummy, and will install and thoroughly test all updates until stability has been achieved. Then — and only then — will I upgrade the Mini to Mavericks, even if it means waiting 'til a .2 or even .3 update.
Good luck to you...
