CS2 / Windows 7

I purchased a copy of Adobe Creative Suite 2 Premium - Education in 2005 for just under $500.  I used it for several years, and even got it to work with a newer Windows 7 machine.  However, I got another new Windows 7 machine a few months ago and can't seem to install the InDesign portion of the Suite.  Photoshop installed and works fine, but I just can't get anything to work to install InDesign.  I get incorrect serial number messages or missing personalization messages when trying to install the files I downloaded a few years ago.  My old discs and serial number don't work, and the downloaded files and those serial numbers don't work.  Adobe seems fine in saying they no longer support this older version, but I just know someone out there has a solution to my problem.  I am unwilling to accept a $500 boat anchor--there must be some way to install it!  Please help!

Accept it or don’t. That won’t change the fact that CS2 predates Windows 7 and if it’s a 64 bit version you’re just adding to the complexity.
I’m not telling you it’s impossible but you’re on your own.

Why do all my Photoshop cs2 windows blank our (gray or white) while using the cropping tool?  I can quickly use the tool to clear out large sections and not have any problem but when I start trying to clean up the edges of a pictures while zoomed in it will happen after working for a short time.

CS2 is completely unsupported under Vista and 64 bits adds more problems.
Best advice is to upgrade. CS5 will be shipping soon.

  • ID CS2 Windows XP Pro - How long should adding pages take?

I am using InDesign CS2 in Windows XP Pro. I have an ID book file with 13 sections, approximately 20-25 pages in each section. There are approximately 4,000-5,000 images on the pages (total on all pages). I am using auto page numbering and am trying to add three blank pages to the beginning of the second section. It's been working for about two hours so far to make the change. Is this normal? I'm a Macintosh guy, so I'm not sure how long this process should take on a Windows machine. When I open the task manager, it says that InDesign is using 47-54% CPU (it fluctuates between 47 and 54%). I've quit all other apps (except system-related), even though they weren't using any of the processor, but it hasn't sped things up. In the menu bar at the top of the main ID window, it says "not responding," but I've seen that before and then it's started working again.
Is this normal? How long should I wait? I know adding an odd number of pages means that items on pages in the sections after the one to which I'm adding pages have to be shifted from right-hand pages to left-hand pages, but should it be taking this long?
I appreciate any input or suggestions. Thank you.

    Guys,
Thanks for the replies. I'm actually not sure how these files were set up (before I was here), and I haven't dug into them yet, but I'm trying to fix them (each book file is a 300-page catalog, and we have 10 catalogs...pray for me!). I thought there were 2GB of RAM, so that's one place to start. I'll try to add the pages with all the other sections closed first. I went through each section and they almost all had "sections" beginning on an internal page within the section in addition to the first page of the section. I want "automatic page numbering," so I unchecked "start section" (or whatever it says) on those internal pages.
I'll requisition more RAM and keep plugging away. Thanks for the suggestions.

  • Cs2/Windows 7x64 - User name, organization, or serial number is missing or invalid?

Ok, I'm at my wits end on this one.  I've installed and reinstalled this CS2 suite multiple times, tried to find the proper registry keys, pretty much anything i can think of to get this to work, but every time I go to boot up one of the programs in the suite (such as Photoshop) I get an error stating "Your Adobe Photoshop user name, organization, or serial number is missing or invalid.  The application cannot continue and must now exit".  There is only an OK box, and absolutely no way for me to look at the licensing information to see what it's getting hung up on.
I've confirmed everything is correct upon installation.  I can't find an e-mail address for Adobe's customer support so I'm asking you guys - what the hell is going on with this software?  Anyone fix this before?

    @exshopper
    A few quick items:
    (1)     I genuinely hope you find satisfaction with PaintShop Pro and that it meets your needs, whatever they are.
    (2)     Bob Levine is not and has never been an employee of Adobe Systems Incorporated. He does speak his mind and certainly lets Adobe know when our products and policies need improvement. Without attempting to put words in his mouth, I think you may be objecting to the fact that he does understand the needs of software developers in terms of marketing and supporting their products and the value of same to customers. He does rightly point out that the monthly subscription costs for the tools they use to earn their living usually amount to far less expenditure than many if not most creative professionals spend each day on their favorite beverages. There is still a major failure of many computer users to comprehend the cost of development and support of software simply because software isn't “tangible” in the way computers, printers, and other peripherals are.
    (3)     When you refer to purchasing “the CS2 suite for 1500 pounds (over $3000 back then)” I assume that you are referring to the Creative Suite 2 Premium which included every creative product that Adobe had at the time including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, GoLive, Version Cue, Bridge, Acrobat, etc. The “back then” was early 2005, nearly a decade which is an awful long time in this industry. If you “bought” the product more recently than eight years ago, much less five years ago, you already were purchasing something that was no longer current. And you certainly could not have purchased it from Adobe.
    (4)     I am sorry to read that your “computer died.” Was that computer nine years old? To be consistent with your expectations of Adobe, hopefully you expected your computer's manufacturer to continue to support that computer with a free or reduced cost repairs and/or replacement because you spent so much money on that computer. And of course you expected that new computer would run the exact same OS as your dead computer and support all your old peripherals including SCSI drives, diskettes, etc.
    (5)     Whether you or even I like it or not, the subscription model better reflects the reality of development, distribution, and support of software. Under the previous “perpetual license” scheme, you paid for a license to use the software for perpetuity on the hardware and software (i.e., OS) platforms for which it was developed and tested, nothing more. Unfortunately, the expectations of many of our customers was that somehow Adobe would provide free updates to their current program versions to provide support for future incompatible hardware and operating system platforms. However, that is a totally untenable business model. In contrast, many high end software applications (not graphic arts applications) not only charge for a license, but have a requirement for payment of either a monthly or annual maintenance contract which cover most such hardware/OS upwards incompatibility contingencies. The subscription model currently in-place basically eliminates the up-front licensing and a maintenance contract with a simple monthly fee that provides access to all updates and upgrades. It is fairly clear and simple.
    (6)     In terms of your costs over time, you didn't indicate which aspects of “CS2 suite” you were using, but given your apparent emphasis on image editing, Adobe does offer a very attractive subscription that includes both Lightroom and Photoshop.  Even if you don't use Lightroom at all, it is still a great price even just for Photoshop.

    Nick,
The first thing to try is to
    a) Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Option+Shift during startup,
or (if a) does not work)
    b) Move the folder
    a) is easy but irreversible, b) is more thorough and reversible, so if you like your settings and do not want to destroy them in vain, use b).

  • Changing style sheets causes hang (ID CS2 Windows)

I have several 25-page (or so) files that are part of a book file. I'm trying to change the tabs in some of the style sheets but when I make the changes within the style sheet dialog window and close it, InDesign hangs. I've let it go for 15 minutes just in case it's working, but it shouldn't take anywhere near that long. It also hangs if I try to delete a character style from the palette. Actually, any style change I've tried to make causes the same hang.
Any suggestions? I know it's not RAM because it works in other files (I have 4GB).
    Thanks...

Might be a font problem. Anything different about these files?
Try exporting to .inx and resaving the result as a new .indd. Replace the original in the book with the new one and see if that helps, too.

  • [CS2 Windows] voscache

    Hi all,
I recently had a problem with a document. When I tried to open it, I got an Assert saying
    "cache bad, should match"
    from
    "c:\development\firedrake_highprofile\components\text\textvos\voscache.cpp"
InDesign then crashed and I had no way to recover that document. It's the first time I've seen it, so it's definitely not very common, but I was hoping that someone here might know what it means or how that might happen. If you know anything, please share it.
    Thanks a lot,
    Bernt

Although Creative Suite products and components prior to CS3 may perform as expected, there might be issues that might affect the installation or use of your Creative Suite product. These versions were not included in our testing efforts because they were designed, tested, and released several years before Windows 7 became available. Because these versions were not tested, they are not supported by Technical Support.

  • Data Merge Causing Crash in CS2 (Windows XP)

I'm working with 3 quarterly reports that merge data from a CSV file to multiple fields. Each report uses a separate CSV file.
I've reused these reports each time I need to create a new report. Each time I make necessary edits to the report (new pics, copy, etc), link to a new data source (CSV with current data) and resave under a different name.
I'm in the process of creating this quarter's reports, however when I click on the Data Merge palette tab, In Design crashes and it shuts down. This has happened on in the past (on occasion) for one report, but I usually can work around it by taking one of the other two reports and adjusting it accordingly. In some cases I think I was eventually able to use the offending file. However this time the problem is happening for all 3 reports and after repeated tries I'm not getting anywhere to figure out the cause let alone resolve it.
Has this happened to anyone? Any help would be great.

Not sure how to link to this, but go back through the forum and look for the topic posted below. I think this may resolve your issue ... it worked for me and it sounds like a similar issue. When you are following the directions, make sure that you save your Printer and Document Presets (if you have any setup) first.
    Good luck!

Data Merge - Memory Could Not be Written - Crashes Every Time now
    Scott Piegza - 07:44am Jan 11, 2008 Pacific
I am having some pretty serious issues whenever I try to access a .csv or .txt file from the DataMerge Palette. It seems to load, but when I try to expand the window to see the available fields, it "thinks" for a few seconds, then delivers an InDesign.exe - Application Error indicating:
The instruction at "0x4edb29c1" referenced memory at 0x03380000". The memory could not be "written". Click OK to terminate the program | Click on CANCEL to debug the program.
At this point, no matter the response the program terminates. This is consistent every time I try to open a file from the datamerge palette although the actual referenced memory may change ... not sure, just a bunch of numbers to me. I use datamerge extensively and it was previously working fine, not sure what the action was that led to the change.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • [CS2, windows, VC2005] howto create debug build

    hi guys,
i've created a new project from scratch and have set all the settings from one of the sample plugins' debug configuration.
when i start the indesign cs2 4.0.5 debug version, it tells me that my plugin needs the release version.
i'm sure i just forgot one setting or define or whatever - can anyone tell me how indesign distinguishes debug versions from release versions?
    best regards

    hi manfred,
nope, thats not the point. i've compiled the basicdialog sample and that works in debug and release version.
    thanks anyway.

  • I have Adobe Photoshop cs2 for windows.

Considering getting a Mac but first see if I have to purchase the one for Apple or will they let me convert from windows to a mac version

The correct answer would be that you need to request a Cross-Grade from Adobe customer service and pay for the upgrade to CS5 for the Mac ($200), and forfeit your license to your Windows version of Photoshop.
If you want to keep using your CS2 Windows copy, then you have to buy a full version of CS5 for the Mac at full price ($700).
Hurry up,  CS2 will be out of the upgrade loop very soon, as soon as CS6 is announced.

  • Leopard Server 10.5.4 + SMB + Windows XP Clients

    Hello!
I got quite some interesting problems with my Xserv under Leopard Server 10.5.4 with Windows XP Clients.
The server runs as an open directory master and a standalone server for smb.
Shares are setup for AFP and SMB clients, ACLs are set up with read+write access for the user's group. So far everything works, users can connect from their Macs (OS X 10.3.x - 10.5.4) without problems.
My problem are the windows clients.
Connecting works fine, and apart from one permission bug (more on that later) they can access all files and do everything the macs can do.
    Problem 1:
Users cannot rename files if they don't have write permission at the POSIX-level as either owner or group on the enclosing folder. ACLs do not matter at this point, if the user connects through SMB he cannot rename files or folders.
No big problem, I just put all users into one group and set this group as the POSIX-group and do a chmod -R g+w on all shares.
Inheritate this settings for SMB-connections works.
But not for AFP-connections. Every new folder a mac-client creates comes with permissions 755. So I changed UMasks on the clients to 002, and at least folders created by the finder now have the right permissions of 775.
Folders created by "new folder" on most applications load/save dialogs still come as 755 which screws up renaming for windows-clients.
Folders created when expanding a zip-file also behave this way.
The only solution I found for this was to make a cronjob that does a chmod -R g+w on the shares. Not that great.
Another "fun" feature with POSIX-permissions and SMB:
Files inside a folder. Files+Folder have an ACL set up that specifically denies deleting files+folders for a user. This users group has POSIX-permissions with write access to the enclosing folder. Window's explorer will let that user delete files and folders without any complaint about missing permissions to do so. They even disappear from the explorer-window, but are not actually deleted.
If you refresh the view, the files+folders are there again.
If the user instead has no POSIX-permission that grants him write-access, but an ACL that grants him delete, explorer happily deletes the files the user wishes to. And these files actually get deleted.
If the user has no write POSIX-permission and no ACL-permission to delete files, explorer complains about missing rights to delete files/folders.
I tried adding "acl check permissions = no" to smb.conf, but that didn't change this behaviour.
    Problem 2:
Sometimes, when copying "large" files to a server share with windows explorer (from 50 MB upto 3 GB), the user immidiately gets an error message: "Cannot copy. The specified network name is no longer available."
The copied file shows up at once in the destination directory and has the correct file size, but only contains "garbage". Half a second later the same copy works and the file is actually copied successfully.
Sometimes this error shows up while a large file is copied and if you browse through other shared folders while the copy takes place.
Most often it will show up when you copy&paste with explorer.
I am stomped and have no idea where to search for a solution to this one.
I tried changing ethernet cables (premade and selfmade), the network switch, ethernet port of the Xserv ... connected a workstation directly to the Xserv - no change.
DNS works, all clients+Xserv have static IPs and the same settings for DNS-Server. Name resolution works, as does reverse resolution.
I even tried using a windows server 2003 as a WINS-Server without success for this problem.
There are no event log entries on the clients when this happens, and smbd.log on the server shows
read failure for 4 bytes to client 192.168.1.137. Error Connection reset by peer
I used wireshark to monitor what exactly happens when this shows up, but it just happens out of nowhere ... the clients just sends a TCP_RST. No unusual things before or after the TCP_RST.
I ran some tests with samba 3.0.32 and samba 3.2.x under linux 2.6.x - no such errors at all.
I tried installing Leopard Server on my Mac Pro, same behaviour.
I ran some batch-scripts that would copy large and small files in excess from/to the server from 4 different windows xp clients for a whole weekend 24 hours - not a single error. As soon as I use windows explorer to copy a file this error has a chance of showing itself.
Problem 3, more of an application bug:
Adobe InDesign CS2 (Windows again ;)) cannot export a PDF to a shared folder if the filename is longer than 8 characters. It starts exporting and after reaching 100% it just stops with the error "PDF cannot be exported." If the filename is shorter than 8 characters, all works fine. Exporting locally or to other samba servers (linux) or windows servers (2003) works fine. Copying this files to the share works, too.
Exporting any other filetype from IDCS2 (eps, inx, jpeg ...) works regardless of filename length. So does saving InDesign-files.
InDesign CS1 and CS3 do not show this, so I guess it's safe to assume this one is Adobe's problem
Did anyone experience similar problems or even better has a solution to some of these?
The real showstopper is problem #2, at least for us.
Thanks in advance and excuse my poor english skills!

I tried several new approaches, but nothing worked so far.
The update to 10.5.5 made things worse. Connections are dropping all over the place, when saving from Adobe programs in particular.
Printing from clients to a Xerox Phaser 5500 works, but choosing a different paper size than the default chosen in the cups admin interface goes all wrong and either prints on the default paper size, but down/upscaled to the chosen paper size or prints on the chosen paper size and down/upscaled as if you were printing to the default paper size. (e.g. default paper size is A4, you choose A3 with an A3 document. Document prints on A4 and is downscaled to A4, or prints on A3 and is downscaled to A4.)
There is no way I can keep this thing in production much longer. I tried reinstalling again, but that did not change any behaviour. Another nice "feature": InDesign disables "edit original" when the path to the linked file contains any directoryname with more than 8 characters in length.
Coupled with a sometimes disappearing "dirserv" (it just stops working until I reboot the whole computer) the decision stands to move away from the Xserve.
Leopard Server 10.5.x just does not seem to work well with windows clients.
We will migrate to a windows server 2003 running ExtremZ-IP for the macintosh clients this weekend. Too bad that Apple does not allow Bootcamp to work on Xserves, at least the hardware would have been useful then.
(As a nice finishing touch, the harddisk partition where all data resides did become corrupt over the weekend. "The volume Daten could not be repaired."
Disk Utility and first aid did show nothing on friday ... saturday after no work being done on the partition this error shows up. The only solution I could find was to reformat the partition and restore from a previous backup. Another weekend down the drain. Sorry for the rant, but 6 weekends in a row is enough.)
