CS3 and CS5.5 side-by-side installation

Hi there
This question has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find it just now.
I have been happy with PP3 for a long time. Considering upgrade to CS5.5 and downloading "try before you buy" - wondered if any conflicts would arise if I install it on the same machine? In case I decide NOT to upgrade now, I don't want my CS3 installation damaged, you see.
Also, will my old projects (CS3) work with CS5.5?
Thanks for any comments.

You won't be able to install Acrobat X from the CS5.5 collections if you have a previous version installed - you'll either have to skip Acrobat X or remove the existing version and put it back if you decide not to keep CS5.5.
Also, remember if you open a file in CS5.5 and it's upgraded via a save, you won't be able to re-open the file in your CS3 apps - so keep backups of all your stuff! You can open an old file in a newer app, but not the other way round. There may be some issues importing older projects if they reference third-party plugins that aren't in CS5.5, but the core stuff should come through just fine.

  • Will CS3 and CS5 run on new Macs?

I need to run Indesign and Photoshop in both CS3 AND CS5. Will they run on a new Mac Pro OS? Do I need Rosetta? I hear it will work on Lion OS 10.6, but not the upcoming Mountain Lion OS 10.7. True?

    Bob writes:
I would also say that it would be best to do a clean install of Mountain Lion if you’re not buying a new machine with it preinstalled. O/S upgrades are a crapshoot and if you’ve already done one or two upgrade installs you have a lot of left over crap on that drive.
It's worth a reminder that reasonable people disagree on this point.
In my considered opinion, the immense hassle of attempting to preserve all your customizations and to reinstall all of your 3rd party software is huge, and and generally that administrative pain (and risk) is not offset by the potential elimination of potentially unknown and poorly-understood problems.
Further, unlike in the Windows world, the general expectation in the Mac community (that is, among users, among developers, and from the Vendor--Apple) is that you will do the migration. This means the migration is that path that is tested and it tends to work pretty well. This is not to say that migrating is expected to be more reliable than a clean installation (though when we start to talk about the reliability of "getting work done," which involves the reliability of applications and availability of your data, that is very different question than the reliability of the base operting system, with no additional software).
So choose carefully, and whatever you do, keep a backup.

  • File compatibility between cs3 and cs5

    Hi,
What are the compatilibity issues between Photoshop CS3 and CS5?  Can they be used together without much (if any) issues?
    Thanks.

They can happily coexist on the same system, as long as you've got the disk space.  Photoshop has always been like that.
You'll only be able to run one at a time, at any given instant, though.
Regarding file compatibility, I don't how much it's required to open a file in Photoshop CS3, but the newer version does offer a "Maximize Compatibility" preference setting for saving .psd files.  On occasion I've opened .psd files in Photoshop CS3 saved by CS5 (using the aforementioned setting) and I haven't seen any issues at all.

  • I have CS3 and CS5 on my Mac, can I safely delete CS3 now that I am upgrading to CS6?

This may seem like a paranoid question, but better safe than sorry...
I currently have both CS3 and CS5 (Production Premium) loaded on my Mac laptop. I just got the upgrade to CS6 today.
I really don't need/use CS3 anymore, so I am wondering if it is OK for me to delete CS3 applications from my computer. I just don't want to accidentally delete something that my CS6 upgrade (or even CS5) might need.
    Any thoughts?
Just trying to be extra careful here before I delete anything...

Dont worry uninstall CS3 , it would not harm your CS6 , As I said Uninstall it properly do not delete it

  • Can you run Photoshop CS3 and CS5 on the same system?

I did this before on another system where I had both CS2 and CS3 installed and I could run either version when I wanted.  Back then I just never bothered to uninstall CS2.
Now on this system I'm tunning CS3 and I have some plug ins I use regularly that aren't compatible with CS5 and I don't want to lay out the cash again for them.  So I'd like to be able to install CS5 and use it primarily but when I need to use the plug ins then just switch to CS3.
I've noticed many programs these days won't run on top of another version.  So is there any reason I won't be able to run both?

Absolutely.  All versions of Photoshop can coexist simultaneously, though you can only run one at a time.
It's usual not to install the old version until you're sure the new one is working great.  If you have the space, never uninstall it.  It's handy to have it around for answering questions, here for example.

  • CS3 and CS5 versions incompatible?

Hi I have Adobe Premiere CS3 and Bridge CS5.1. When I select Browse in Premiere nothing happens and the Bridge is not launched. How can I link the two programs?

Most likely, you may not... Bridge is part of a suite, and is designed to work with the other products in that suite... you need to use Premiere Pro CS5 (CS5.5 ???) to work with Bridge

  • Fonts different between CS3 and CS5 on Win7 system using the same fonts directory

I have several files created in Fireworks CS3 that work fine. Fonts are all  installed in the system directory on my Win7 box.  This used to be a WinXP Pro  box.
I can load a file into Fireworks CS3 without a single issue and the text all  looks perfect. The way it should.  Close CS3, open CS5 and load the same file  and CS5 tells me I have to update my fonts.  Why?  Same system, same fonts in  the same fonts directory. Only thing that's changed is that I'm opening the  file(s) in CS5.
The fonts do not look the same in CS5.  Am I going to have to redo every  Fireworks CS3 file so that it looks correct in CS5? If so, why?
    -- Bob
Here's a sample image the way it's supposed to look. The Swift gets hosed. PlazaDUtil is the font. I'd hate to have to redo all my logo files.

Prior to CS4 Fireworks used the Macromedia type engine. From CS4 forward, adobe introduced the adobe type engine to improve text handling/integration between FW AI and PS. As a result moving CS3 files over to cs4 forces FW to update the fonts.

  • The same bug in CS3 AND CS5?

In InDesign CS3 I must have a rotation and shearing angle of 5° for a text box with a text of different sizes, mainly 7.5 pt. The first line is left-aligned with 1.1 mm indent, the second line is right-aligned (tab).
When I copy this textbox onto another side of the same document or to another document it results in text overflow. Until now the only way for me is to correct both angles to 0°, then copy to the other document and at last come back to 5°. Unfortunately sometimes it's necessary to copy 5 or perhaps 50 of these to another document.
Really crazy is that when I reduce the font size nothing happens (text overflow), but when I change to 8 pt there is no overflow.
I hoped that this would be the past with CS5, but it isn't. It's all the same. It looks like this:
Is there anyone with some ideas?
    Uwe

Is this a custom made font or a stock font? In any case the problem should be broght to the attention of the foundry.
As far as what to so, if it's font-specific, there may not be a workaround. Rather than the right indent tab, perhaps using a hard return and a right-aligned paragraph style would work?  You could do that in two steps, I think, using Find/change and GREP. First look for the tab and replace with with a paragraph break and any symbol you wouln't normally have at  the start of a paragraph. Next look for ^<insert the symbol here>(.+) and repalce with $1 and set the change options to apply the new right-aligned style.

  • Duplicate code inserted at end of file by dreamweaver CS3 and CS5

I have been using CS3 basically since it came out and have just recently upgraded to CS5.
Previously with CS3 Dreamweaver, in approx the last 6months of use I started experiencing a random effect were any file (HTML, JS, CSS...) opened, edited, and then saved by Dreamweaver would often result in a chunk of the code to be duplicated at the end of the file.
(small example can be seen here: http://screencast.com/t/YTNmNWRmNzYt)
The more the file was edited, the larger the chunk of duplicated code would be.
Additionally, this duplicated code was not visible in Dreamweaver while that file was still open - but closing it and re-opening it (or viewing it in Notepad) would then reveal it. Deleting it from within Dreamweaver had no effect on it's removal - it remained in the file when saved.
The only way I have been working around this was to constantly close files, check them in Notepad, correct the code if needed, and then continue working or put file into production.I am running Windows 7 (64 Bit).
I have another machine with same OS and another new copy of CS5 but I have not yet been able to replicate the same issue - although I have not tested it extensively (the issue happens randomly, although quite frequently on my machine).
I have come across other similar issues posted online but many of these date back to 2007/2008.

Adobe doesn't care, they don't have to. I like Phsotoshop and have been using it professionally for 20 years, but lets face it, I wouldnt mind some really good competition from another source. It didnt use to be the only game in town, and doesnt have to remain so.
I could brainstorm how I would want competing software to look like. Pshop is not the easiest workflow possible. Illustrator is clearly deficient to even CorelDraw, and certainly Freehand. I've been meaning to reconnect with CorelDraw. It did some cool things.
Google Chrome is pulling a lot of manoevers software wise and I hope they try to go a little deeper and give Adobe a run for their money on the one program they feel justifies unbelievable gouging. Go investigate Ableton Live if you want to see what a company that cares about its customers is doing, ADOBE. Audition is a JOKE compared to Ableton Live. Thank God we're not powned on the audio side by these suits.
The idea that a company would peddle buggy software, which CS4 was..., although some of that was Apple's fault, is bad, the upgrade prices were ridiculous, and this is the end of the road for me currently. The idea that a company would actively
push away customers is pretty incredible. "But I sent you an email!" Whoops, you gotta pay $1900 for production premium CS6! HAHAHAHAHA. Time for a YT video with my old hard copy box. Sounds like a good idea.
There are too many options on the motion graphics side, and I'll keep a static machine to run Pshop and AE CS4.
The masters of the universe will have theit way, and the rest must bow to their ambivalent greed. At least that's the way they think. It would seem that Adobe and Apple really, really want some upstarts to come up. Maybe $360 for a year to figure out an exit might work. It will be interesting to see if this hits earnings. VERY interesting.

  • CS3 and CS5 on the same Mac

    Hi
Are there any known problems with keeping Indesign CS3, or for that matter the whole CS3 suite, on my Mac and installing the CS5 Suite as well. The installation docs note that I have to remove Acrobat 8 before installing 9, but I don't see any mention of having to remove CS3 apps.
I will have the occasional need to keep files in CS3 for compatibility with some clients, so I would like to be able to run both.
    Thanks

Might be of interest: in setups like this, with multiple versions of InDesign installed, to help avoid accidental 'up-saving' of documents, we created Soxy:

  • CS3 and CS5 on the same PC ?

    Hi all,
I am currently working with the Creative Suite CS3. I recently purchased the Creative Suite CS5. But I would like to keep the CS3 on my computer (for info, the characteristics of my PC : Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor I5500, 4GB Ram, Graphic Card ATI FirePro V5800 1GB, 320GB HD).
Here is my question : can I install the 2 versions on my PC without any problem ? Problems of compatibility or other ?
    Thank you,
    Sof

I’d be way more concerned that you just bought CS5 since it’s been replaced by CS5.5 for almost a year. Where did you buy it?
If it was by chance an authorized reseller then yes, it’s perfectly okay to have it installed side by side with CS3.

  • Adobe Flash IDE: Migration/Compatibility issues between Adobe Flash Professional CS3 and CS5

    Hi,
Adobe Flash IDE: Adobe Flash CS3 Professional and Adobe Flash Professional CS5
I am facing some  migration/compatibility issues between Adobe Flash CS3 Professional and Adobe  Flash Professional CS5:
I am working on a project that has  been completely developed in CS3 earlier. When I am using CS5 (Flash Player 9 /  Flash Player 10) to compile the FLA files, it is creating some new issues like  some customized radio buttons are getting disappeared while viewing the SWF on a  web page etc.
So, I would like to  know:
    1) Is there any  migration/compatibility issue between Adobe Flash CS3 Professional and Adobe  Flash Professional CS5?
    2) If yes: Is there any patch  available from Adobe for it?
    3) If no: What could be the causes  and the best possible solutions for it?
Any help and support would be highly  appreciated. Many thanks in advance!
    Thanks & Regards

  • Photoshop CS3 and CS5 Co-existing.

I have been very luck to be given Photoshop CS5 for Fathers day and am currently running CS3 Extended on my Win 7 64bit Professional PC system.
My question is can I install CS5 64bit onto my PC, (with Bridge and Raw), while still keeping CS3 32bit, (with Bridge and Raw), on the same PC?
    Will they happily co-exist?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Disabled is too strong a word.  I have read that some of the things like file associations in Explorer with Photoshop get deleted when uninstalling an older version.  Reinstalling the new one would be the way to correct that.
But I'm really the wrong person to ask, as I have never uninstalled a version of Photoshop (I still have all of them installed on some systems here, back to version 6.0); I'll let someone else chime in on the specifics.

  • CS3 and CS5 on same computer

I am currently using CS3 on a Mac with Leopard and I am about to upgrade to CS5.  I've read discussions about compatibility issues between the two versions, so I would like to keep CS3 on my computer even after adding CS5.  Would this be a problem?
Also, I assume I should upgrade to Snow Leopard to run CS5, but will that then create problems when I need to work on older files in CS3?  Thanks for any advice.

Also, I assume I should upgrade to Snow Leopard to run CS5, but will that then create problems when I need to work on older files in CS3?  Thanks for any advice.
I've not tried CS3 on Snow Leopard, but I can't recall hearing any issues with it that were specfic to CS3. However, there are plenty of printer-related issues, changes in PDF production, and so on with Snow Leopard generally. (I'm skipping Snow Leopard entirely, for what it's worth.)
Also, I'm surprised that Bob didn't mention the regular problems with in-place upgrades to Snow Leopard; I first learned about these issues from him, and when I tried it experimentally at home, I experienced all kinds of bizarre problems in InDesign. If you do move to Snow Leopard, make sure that you don't do an in-place upgrade (by just installing Snow Leopard on top of Leopard), but a brand new install of Snow Leopard. It generates plenty of extra hassle backing up everything and erasing your drive, but it's better than finding out that your install of InDesign is messed up in the middle of a project and having to do the erase-and-fresh-install when the clock is ticking on a deadline. Just try searching the forums for "snow leopard upgrade" if you want to get a sample of other people's experiences of Snow Leopard upgrades.
