CS3 Beginner help - Overlapping?

I'm new to Illustrator and I'm sorry if this is a silly question but I've tried all sorts of things and I just can't work it out. I'm wondering how you partly remove the overlap of an object on another object. I'm thinking it has something to do with Pathfinder but for the life of me I can't make it do it correctly. I've attached a file to show what I mean. What I would to do it work out how to make the top group look like the bottom group (as in each object overlapping another in one area but under another object in another area). I can do it by cheating, as shown in the bottom group, but I figure there must be a way to do it properly.
Any help would be appreciated. Oh, and I'm using Illustrator CS3.

I don't seem to have a Minus Front - only a Minus Back. I've tried everything I can find on the Pathfinder tool bar but nothing seems to work. It obviously must but I must be doing something wrong. I've done a picture of the item. Square was created first, then circle, then star, but I want to know how to get the top edge of the star to go under the square like it does in the second picture (which I faked). Hope the pictures show ok.

Adobe After Effects CS3 Crash help on Vista

I used CS3 Clean script and followed all the instructions for "Bigger problem-solving tools" and "Other Tips & Tricks" on http://generalspecialist.com/2007/02/troubleshooting-after-effects-7.asp.
I'm still having the same problem but only StackHash_d742 is the problem none of the other extensions are showing up, after I attempt to run the program multiple times.
Is there a way to track this file down?

I have to agree with David, if you are new to DW, then creating a guest book will be difficult for you. However, you don't have to re-invent the wheel, there are many guestbook scripts available to save you the time and certainly the headaches :-)

Color management issues with Flash CS3, please help?

Hello everyone.
I am having issues with color from a Jpeg image produced in Photoshop CS4
after importing onto the stage in Flash CS3. The color in Flash changes the image to a lighter less saturated state. Yuk.
Here is a link to a screen capture to show you what's happening (for a bigger view):

As you can see the front image is the Photoshop image showing the sRGB color profile embedded but Flash (behind) changes that color.
This client is quite picky and she will notice this difference.
If any one can help, please.

Only an hour wasted? Lucky you. Color is an incredibly complex subject. First, forget matching anything to the small LCD on the back of your camera. That's there as a basic guide and is affected by the internal jpg algorithm of your camera.
2nd, you're not really takeing a color photo with your digital camera, but three separate B&W images in a mosaic pattern, exposed thru separate red, green and blue filters. Actual color doesn't happen until that matrix is demosaiced in either your raw converter, or the in-camera processor (which relies heavily on camera settings, saturation, contrast, mode, etc.)
Having said the above, you can still get very good, predictable results in your workflow. I have a few color management articles on my website that you might find very helpful. Check out the Introduction to Color Management and Monitor and Printer Profiling. In my opinion, a monitor calibration device is the minimum entry fee if you want decent color.

[CS3][JS] Help with image resizing

I'm still a newbie of ID scripting.
I'm using js scripting in Indesign CS3 to make an auto-impaginator and I have a problem with images.
I charged my contents from an xml set of tables, that I put into a fixed textFrame of the master page.
Because of the table needs to fill multiple pages, I made a function that keep creating pages and link the textFrames so that the table continues in various pages.
In this whole process I have some images too, that I need to resize them to fill the cell, because now they pass the parent cell.
I found a method that looks at the bounds and resizes the image and the rectangle too, but it doesn't work always, because if a image is overflowing, it hasn't any bound and it fails, and this causes other problems in my process, so I would find another method.
So:
Is there another way to resize an image on-the-way while importing it? Some xml attribute or preference?
Or some method that works also if the image is overflowing?

These forums are pointless. Adobe must believe that other users will cut the mustard. Absolutely a waste of effort for everyone. Adobe should PAY at least a junior developer involved in the projects to monitor and help with these posts. FLEX rules yeah and thousands more do scripting than develop plug ins...
Come on Adobe, step up your better than this. Customer Service can be free to the customers ... we are not talking about GET IT ALL FREE, talking about buy it and create a community and support it, but then again LAYERS and INDESIGN SECRETS have people who actually want to help users rather than rabbit hole everything.

Flash CS3 Component Help?

I have a menu component I've created in Flash CS3. I'm
running into a small problem. Currently, in Flash, I create an
array in the first frame of the movie and then assign a
"menu_items" property (an array) on my menu object as that array.
The array is an array of specialized menu item objects that is
defined in a separate class. In Flex, I would like to do this:

I'm not quite sure how I can get my object to realize the

I've seen your query all over the internet, so I should warn you I don't believe it's possible to disable a List Item.

Missing height colum! (Table) CS3 Please help

I am using cs3 presently an am having a strange issue.. when a table selected, the width colum comes at right place but the height column is absent (But it was there in drmweaver 8) i do'nt know if others have same prob too..
i know its a small thing but my working style makes it a big thing for me.. every tym i hav to manualy change height i have to shift to code view and change (I doo most of work in design w only..) any hhelp would b appriciated

That option was removed from the current versions of DW because Table height is invalid HTML.
A table should shrink or expand to fit whatever content is inside it :-)

Flash CS3 Button HELP

Ok, so i'm very new to Flash.
I have a web page & it has 9 buttons. I want the user to
be able to click on anyone of these buttons & be taken to that
page.
I don't know how to do this in CS3?
I have each button set up on it's own layer & set as a
symbol. That is it, now what?
If anyone can give me step-by-step instructions that would be
great!
I need this for a class project for tomorrow & I have
spent a week trying to make it work but nothing!
I'm very frustrated & confussed!

If you're doing this .fla in AS2.0 there are at least two
popular ways of doing this. (I'm not sure of the AS3.0 syntax.)
1) Click on a button, open the Actions panel and have
ScriptAssist open. In the toolbox on the left you should see a list
of functions, with headings Global Functions / Movie Clip Control.
See the word 'on'? The basic functions you want begin with
'on'...so click it, and you'll get a choice of onPress, onRelease,
etc. Pick what you want the button to do and you're done. You
should end up with code that looks something like this
on (release) {
gotoAndStop("Scene5", 16);
(My above example would take you to frame 16 in Scene 5. If
you have just one scene, leave out the Scene name.)
You have to do this to each button, individually.
2) If you'd rather stick all the code in one place, do it
this way instead. First make sure each button has an instance name.
In other words, select each button and in the Properties panel give
it a name like: startButton_btn, stopButton_btn, etc. Open a new
layer, call it Actions. Click on the first frame, open the Actions
panel, and enter code like this for each button instance name you
have:
startButton_btn.onRelease = function() {
play();
If you have nine buttons, you should have nine functions set
up like the above. Now save and test. If it doesn't work at first,
you probably just typed something wrong.

Flash cs3 newbie help - setting up a clicktag

I am just about to pull my hair out - please help as I don't have that much hair to pull out.
I created a flash file in Flash CS3 and was told I need to add a click tag for an agency who want to keep track of the click throughs for the ad.
I have created the invisible button layer and set up the 'hit' and tried and tried and tried to select the button and add some action script to it.
(which I have seen three different codes to use)
Each time I export it or publish it I get the error message: mouse events are permitted only for button insances on release. I have read and understand I need to assign the code to the button and not the frame but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to do that.
I select the button (which I have converted to a 'button') and F9 or left click to get the Actions panel and once I am there and try to use the '+' to add code, it automatically shows 'Current Select/Frame 1 in the left side of the Actions panel. I get that it is adding the code to the frame but how do I get it to add the code to the button???
So my question is 1) how do I add the code to the button and not the frame and 2) what code should I use?
Any and all help is GREATLY appreaciated!

Here's an explanation for those who may find the thread...
Click on the invisible button you created and press F9 (opens Actions)
(Ensure it says 'Actions: button' at top)
Put this code in:

getURL(clickTAG, "_blank");

Can't create new sites in Dreamweaver CS3. Help!

I am trying to create a new site in Dreamweaver CS3 but keep
getting the following error:
"The action cannot be completed because the other program is
busy.
Choose 'Switch to' to activate the program and correct the
problem"
I have tried every documented solution on the adobe website
and other discussion forums and still cannot get past the problem.
I have restarted the IIS server on my local PC as documented
on the following adobe technote:

Other things I have done:
1. I have followed all the advice in the links at the bottom
of the above page.
2. I have created a new user, logged into that and tried
creating a site with a "virgin" environment
and I still have the problem.
3. I have gone into the registry and renamed the site
configuration info in case something was corrupted.
This removed all my site configurations. No help!
4. I have turned of my firewall and restarted the IIS
server.
5. I have searched the web for anything even remotely
similar to this error and tried every tip out there.
I called Adobe and they referred me back to the technote
above, which I had already tried.
One last bit of info. I can't create new sites, but I can
edit web pages in my existing sites. However, I cannot change the
configuration of the website in the Manage Sites area (i.e. I can't
push the Edit button).
Has anyone had this problem? Any help would be appreciated. I
have hit a brick wall on this one and am trying to meet a deadline
on a new website I need to create.
If I can't find a solution quick, I will be an
ex-Dreamweaver user. That saddens me because I really like
Dreamweaver, but I have to perform on my job.

Beginner help with splash of color in a black and white photo

Hi there. I just perchased the Photoshop Elements 7. I have a picture of my niece who has beautiful blue eyes and I want to make it black and white and them leave her eyes there beautiful blue?? Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to do this? I have search all over and the answers I can across where way to complex for my new beginner knowledge. Also I have another photo of the same niece with her prom dress on that I would like to leave her eye color alone and dress, but the rest in black and white. There are several ways to do it. One way which is really flexible is to add a Hue/Saturation layer over your image. Reduce the Saturation in this dialog to -100 to remove all of the color. Grab your paint brush and set the color to black. With the Hue/Saturation layer selected, paint over the eyes to reveal the color of her eyes.
A couple of tricks to go with this.
You can blur the mask to soften/feather the edges after you paint if needed.
If you need to firm up the edges, use levels on the mask...ctrl L.
If you want to mix your own black and white effect, you can use the drop down box in the Hue/Saturation dialog box to reduce each individual color channel's Saturation to -100 (instead of the master which effects the overall); then tune your effect by adjusting the individual color's lightness values. You can also adjust Hue values if desired.

CoolType.dll error when starting Flash CS3, please help!

I recently downloaded Flash CS3 Trial from Adobe, a huge
download, after download i tried to install, a really huge
installation!
After the installation is complete finally, i started the
Flash CS3 and it gives me this error:
Faulting application flash.exe, version 9.0.0.494, faulting
module cooltype.dll, version 5.4.15.1, fault address 0x000a2a98.
Then i replaced the file from an older version of
CoolType(i.e. 5.1.39.1) by replacing it from other Adobe
installations, then it gives a new error message:
Faulting application flash.exe, version 9.0.0.494, faulting
module adobepdfl.dll, version 8.1.0.546, fault address 0x001b60cd.
I am using Windows XP
Can anybody help me with this?
I don't what to do, if there is anything wrong with my fonts,
should i remove all fonts and check?
Or do i have to install any Microsoft Windows Patch for this?
Or any other way?
I really need to explore CS3!

Not sure if you found a solution to this but I was having
this similar problem and just found a post on the
google
forums that said it was a font that was installed. It doesn't
look like it's cooltype so it must be a font that's
installed.

Well I finally got CS3 after using HS5.1 for the last 7 or 10 years! It is fantastic! So far so good though it is taking some getting used to...
I was hoping that someone could be so kind to help me with a couple things, I would be greatly appreciative to say the least.
First, How do I customize the toolbars? I was able to add things to all the toolbars before so was wondering if there's similar customizability in Dreamweaver. I saw a favorites tab but can I add the 12 or so buttons I use alot in there and then have that as the default tab on opening?
I used to select text and then (using a custom toolbar button/shortcut) click the div tag. I am not sure how to use the new one because it only has id or class and create new css style where I'm used to writing a style attribute/tag - (sorry if my nomenclature is off) in there myself.
I really like the new view as you go. How do you make it so when looking in design half or full the images are not in a 'selected' type state or does that mean something?
Lastly, I used to have a keyboard shortcut to do a number of things like blockquote and change case to upper or lower. I cannot find any of those! Where oh where (Brother Where Art Though) can they be?

You can save a work space after setting it up or customising it to your needs: window > workpace layout > new workspace..
On the right side, open the panel for css styles (or under window). This panel has another window for properties under it and on the statusbar of that little panel is + sign. Click on it to make a new rule. You can also right click the last css rule and then click "Edit" to go in to the css selector/properties applet or you can opt to open the css file and write the rules directly..usually you will have a tab also for the css file at the top.

DW CS3 Upgrade Help

I've installed DW CS3, and of course it has none of the
customizations or plug-ins that I had in DW8. I drilled down in the
Finder to both DW8 and DW CS3's Configuration folders. I copied the
Snippets folder in the CS3 file and they show fine in CS3. Can I
safely copy everything in the DW8 folder over, too? I'm
particularly interested in the Project Seven apps I've purchased...
Help?

The extensions are in Extension Manager, but disabled - you
just need to
re-enable them.
You should be copying the snippets from the USER
Configurations folder, not
the Program Files folder.
