CS3/CS4 Critical Security Update

This crossed my desk this morning and thought it would be of interest here:

I make no claims as to authenticity or it being a "critical update" I am just passing along what I read.
Don't shoot the messenger.
But if it's true a thank you will suffice.
Best regards, Rich

In true, recent Adobe style, no sign of the update in the Updates in the Illustrator Updates page:

  • App store blank after restarting Mac during 'Critical Security Update' for 10.9.2

Hi - this is definitely a self inflicted problem however it took me by suprise, and I wasn't sure if it was an official Apple update or some kind of new virus... I was browsing Safari when the notification came up 'Critical security update' which was weird to me as it didn't look like a standard notification, so I clicked 'later' (or equivalent) but my entire screen faded out to grey and it started updating anyway. So naturally I panicked and force shut down my computer, mainly because it was unlike any update I had encountered. After scouting around online I decided to turn it on again, and everything seems to be working, however my app store is totally blank apart from the main icons (featured, purchases, icons, etc). I now can't update it at all let alone download any new apps. I'd really appreciate any help!

    Hi anto321,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your computer was shut down during an update, I recommend first starting up into Safe Mode:
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Safe Mode is a way to start up your Mac that performs certain checks and prevents certain software from automatically loading or opening.
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), follow these steps.
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key.
The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
After the logo appears, you should see a progress bar during startup. This indicates that your computer is performing a directory check as part of Safe Mode.
To leave Safe Mode, restart your computer without holding any keys during startup.
    Best,
    Jeremy

  • Critical Microsoft security update this am, now missing 1.5 mos emails

When I started up the MacBook Pro this morning there was a message to install a critical security update for Office/Outlook 2011.  I started the download and closed all programs (except finder).  The update completed successfully.  When I restarted Outlook 2011, I found that the last month and a half of email messages I had saved, including responses still in my sent items folder, as well as yet unprocessed inbox items going back a week or so...all had vanished.  Iʻve spent most of this afternoon searching apple and microsoft support discussion groups for clues, finding nothing definitive.  It turns out there are FOUR identity files: main identity, main identity backup 11/1/11, 11/1/11 identity, and 11/1/11 identity backup. If I recall correctly, there was an Outlook data problem in late October, and at that time I found a Microsoft knowledge base article that led me through the steps of creating the 11/1/11 identity.  Having found the folder containing all identity files, Iʻm not sure what to do with each; thereʻs only me and I only want one.  Ideally, I could rebuild each one, then export data from each one; then set the 11/1/11 identity as default; then open Outlook and import the exported data files into this identity one by one...using a setting option to not import duplicates.  HOWEVER, in previous years on Windows computers I did exactly this filtered importing into Outlook but dupes (and sometimes, triplicates) were created regardless.  The chore of manually deleting the dupes takes hours and is mind-numbing; I donʻt want to have to do this again!  So Iʻm gunshy.  I hope thereʻs a more experienced and technically informed user who can guide me to the least time-consuming solution.  By the way, apple support could not assist me with the file structure/location(s) for Microsoft Office Outlook on the Mac.  In order to run a backup of last nightʻs shutdown Outlook data file from time machine, I need to know the filename and the file location path.  Iʻm reluctant to phone Microsoft support, wait in line, and have to pay $60 plus for this information.

Yes, I had (eventually) done that yesterday.  The final solution was to forward to myself the inbox items in each of two nonprimary identities (they came in while I was exploring to "map the territory" yesterday), immediately shutting down Outlook and changing to the next identity so no further current emails would be download to my MacBook Pro (this step was not documented anywhere on apple or microsoft support, I just tried it and it worked).  I had located the identity files location, and determined which identity was my most recent primary one.  Since the one on my computer had been corrupted by the security update, I located the last backup before shutting down the night before on Time Machine, restored it, and set it as default.  Then I deleted all the "bad" identities to avoid confusion in the future.  Upon restarting Outlook, my two "transport" emails downloaded from my third party spam filter server.  I opened each, reviewed the attached emails, and moved the ones I wanted to examine further to the inbox on my computer.  Then I deleted these two "transport" emails.  There may be a few incoming emails from early yesterday morning that I have lost permanently, but by and large I have recovered all of my data, including what had been the missing 1 1/2 monthsʻ worth, via this somewhat trial-and-error, very time-consuming procedure.

  • 10.6.8 freezing ?since last security update

Hi, I am hoping someone may be able to help me with this? I am trying to revise for exams and this is causing great irritation.
Auto update downloaded a critical security update last week and since then my computer is crashing. I have been using the computers for 4 hours today and its happened twice.  A dark curtain comes down the screen and it tells me to manually turn off the computer and reboot.  This makes me think it’s a software problem. My macbook is only 18 months old and I have very little third party software on my computer. I am running OS 10.6.8 (I have considered an update to lion to work better with other apple devices but I am concerned that it will run slowly on my machine and it doesn’t help my current problem). I have read that people had problems originally with 10.6.8 update but I would have thought that I have been running this since it first came out and as such don’t know if the combo update would have any effect.
I started using time machine to back up a month ago, having previously manually transferred files to a back up drive.
    Any ideas?

There was a issue with 10.6.8 Security Update 2012-001 v 1, but it was pulled and v 1.1 released to fix the issue with Rosetta based software.
It's possible you need to update third party software to make sure your current.

Maybe, Apple considers KP's more of a hardware problem, likely your TM drive.

  • I can not download Windows Security Updates due to incompatibility with FireFox.

Firefox is not allowing critical security updates, or any updates, to Windows and Adobe. It also interferes with my Norton security updates!! (have premium home user software).
I don't like this new version of Firefox. I had agreed to be a beta-tester, but had to withdraw due to the problems in the FireFox software.

It may be because you appear to be running a BETA version of Firefox. Try using the Help | Updates route to update to the full release first. You can also download the full release from here: [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/?ref=logo Download Firefox 4.0]
You can downgrade at any time by downloading v3.6.16 from here: [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html Download Firefox v3.6.16]
Then go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the current version, but choose to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc. Finally, reboot and then run the installation file you downloaded.

  • What do I do when installing a mac security update freezes during the installation process?

Got an update notice the other day that a critical security update needed to be done right away. The update downloaded and then 90% through the installation it all froze. I can't do anything with the screen. Anyone out there have a suggestion?

As stevejobsfan0123 explained perfectly, Classic apps only works with Mac OS X 10.4 or older, so it's not possible to run it on your Mac, but there's another problem: MathCAD 15 isn't compatible with OS X, so you will have to buy the Windows version and install Windows on Boot Camp > http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp

  • No Security Updates???

Hello All, my friend brought me her computer and she said it started to freak-out and then freeze. I tried to start it and got a question mark/folder so I started it in single-user mode...didn't boot!! Next I tried to start from a TechTool Protege and hold the option key down and select the Firewire tool. Her Hard disk did not show up!!! Well, repaired the start-up disk and repaired permissions and got it to boot. The next day it was dead again. After a few more questions---I nailed the problem---10.4.10 update was just installed....
She said everything was fine B4 the update so I copied her disk via target mode and reinstalled Tiger. I then downloaded and installed the 10.4.9 combo all the Jave/Quicktime.......but the only thing that was not showing up was the-----security updates-----the combo is dated 3/17/2007 so any updates after that should have shown up in SOFTWARE UPDATE right????
Has anyone seen this problem before? Should I manually install the updates dated after 3/17?

Non-critical security updates for Mac OS X 10.8 are part of the regular OS updates.

  • QUICKTIME 7.1.3 SECURITY UPDATE FOR WINDOWS? Where is it?

How do I get the security update (2007-001) for the WINDOWS version of QuickTime? Do I just download and install the standalone player again?
As an IT professional who is constantly trying to stick up for apple in a pro-Microsoft world, I find it ridiculous that there is no mention of how windows users can protect themselves from this security flaw, at: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304989
It only talks about the OSX version, and the updater in the windows quicktime player just tells me it's up to date with 7.1.3... but 7.1.3 is the only version affected by the security flaw!
    The bug:
    http://projects.info-pull.com/moab/MOAB-01-01-2007.html

The solution for Windows clients is un-acceptable. This is a critical security flaw that could result of remote code execution and possible system compromise.
We cannot sit back and expect thousands of enterprise users to manually go out and update QuickTime. Worse yet if they didn't enable the updater when they installed QuickTime.
A separate downloadable patch for QuickTime for Windows needs to be made available ASAP whereas it can be deployed via existing distribution methods just like we do all other "Critical" security updates.
When will a downloadable patch be available?
If not, our only recourse may be to force the un-install of QuickTime as an unmanageable product.

  • Problems installing Windows Security Update

Is anyone else having problems getting the new 'critical'
security update from Microsoft to install? I have downloaded the
update from Microsoft's website manually by going:
    HERE
When I go to install the update I get the error: 'The version
of Macromedia Flash you have installed does not match the update
    you are trying to install.'
Here are the steps I have already taken:
Completely removed flash player using the uninstall utility
    found on Macromedia's website.[/li]
Reinstalled the latest version (which appears to be
    8.0.24.0)[/li]
I went into the c:/windows/system32/macromed/flash/ folder and
ran the UpdateFlash.exe application to ensure that I had all the
latest updates. This .exe tells me that there is an update
available, it acts like it is downloading it and installs it. When
finished it says that the new version will install when I reboot. I
reboot, run the UpdateFlash.exe app again, and the same update is
    available again and again.[/li]
I am still unable to install the latest security update after
running the UpdateFlash.exe app which supposedly gives me the
    latest version of flash.

I've tryed to repair permissions at least 3x, and also run update_prebindings
Problem prevails, even if I log in as other/new user, indicating that issue is system-wide not user wide.

note 'empty' icon at newly saved webarchive, as well as fact that Safari is now 2x in dock, once I newly add it (with correct icon) second time original with silly icon with document and triangles....

The process of installing Flash security updates silently seems be broken because Adobe continues to change version numbers so many times.  It appears that 11.4.287 users can only get the latest security updates by moving to the new 11.5.x version and whenever the version number is changed, the update is not silent.  It pops up a splash screen asking the user if they want to update even though the policy was previously set to install updates automatically.  The user may not have either the desire nor the security permissions to install Flash updates.  If they have admin rights, and choose to install the update, then they frequently end up installing piggy-backed software such as Chrome to McAfee that is enabled by default and then need to get help from the help desk to remove it.
The users do not even get prompted of the update until after a reboot that may not come until weeks after the security update is available, so in the meantime, they are surfing the web with the unpatched version of Flash even though their Flash updates settings were set to:  "Allow Adobe to install updates."
This is not a safe process.
Please either allow critical security updates to install silently even if it is a new version number or stop updating the version numbers so frequently.  This is very frustrating since we had this exact same issue only weeks ago going from 11.3 to 11.4.
Why is this still happening?  Can this be fixed?

I guess you are using silent update with your own update server?
We are having the same annoyance. Already posted about it a few days ago: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1098860
I do hope for a response from Adobe.

  • Are there no security updates for Mountain Lion?

I was just downloading updates for my wife's 2008 white MacBook and noticed that a Security Update was in the mix.  The MacBook is running Lion.  While I was doing that I checked my Mac Mini for updates to Mountain Lion.  Got notified of 10.8.5 update but no Security Update.  Come to think of it, I don't remember ever being notified of a required Security Update for the Mini.  Are they just buried in with other OSX system updates and too routine to mention?  Just curious.

Non-critical security updates for Mac OS X 10.8 are part of the regular OS updates.

  • Manual installation of Flash CS4 security update patch fails

    Vista Home Premium
    CS4 Design Premium
Am attempting to install Windows flash_player_update2_flash10
using the Admin account. Followed these instructions:
    1. Quilt Flash CS4 Professional (NOTE: actually closed all
    programs)
    2. Right click flash_player_update2_flash10.zip
    3. Select Extract All....
    4. Extract the contents of the file to:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS4\
    5. When asked to replace the existing Players folder, choose
    Yes
Shortly after giving administrative okay to the install and
clicking "yes" to the "copy and replace" popup, I get a Windows
    popup with this message:
"Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. To help
portect your computer, Windows has blocked access to the file.
    Name: FlashPlayer.exe" OK"
No options on the popup except "OK" whichs stops the
installation. I realize this is a Windows issue, but it's also a
CS4 installation issue. (I find it extremely ironic that Windows
detects the installation of a security update as a security issue.)
    Any suggestions?

You're going to get a lot more attention in the Flash forum than you
    will here.

First off, iOS 5 will not run on Macs.   You need to give us your Mac OS X on your Mac to determine which security update you need.  Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac.     And then read the link here:

  • Are there critical or security updates for Macromedia Dreamweaver since Adobe took over?

Are there critical or security updates for Macromedia Dreamweaver Flash and Macromedia suite since Adobe took over? I can still use it but I am worried about security issues.

I have a new computer with Windows 7 and I thought of installing my old Macromedia Dreamweaver and using it to update my web site. However I don't know if I can still use it with Windows 7 and with no critical updates I am wondering what would happen.
Or if I reformat my old Windows XP computer  and reinstall Macromedia Dreamweaver, would it be okay, or safe, security wise? Thanks.
What sort of security are you worried about?  DW creates plain text files and they are as safe as any other text files you create with Notepad or Wordpad.
How old is your DW?  I personally thing#k that it is time for you to get a new version so that you can create websites based on modern standards that are compatible with modern browsers.
Amazon should be able to sell you the product at a very competitive price.
    Good luck.
