CS3 equivalent to PSE?

What program or programs in CS3 would be the equivalent to PSE?
Specifically, what CS3 program(s) would I use to create slideshows like PSE can do - with pan/zoom and transitions, etc? Also, which CS3 app does the picture tagging and organizing like PSE?
Any reason I would need PSE if I purchase CS3 Master Collection?
Thanks
Kevin

PSE has an image editor and Organizer. CS3 has an image editor and Bridge.
The two image editors are similar but the CS3 editor is the Pro version and
has significantly greater functionality. Organizer and Bridge are similar
but not equivalent. Bridge doesn't have the consumer level "creations" that
Organizer provides, for example. FYI, PSE 5 for Mac uses a trimmed down
version of Bridge instead of Organizer (which never was available for Mac).

You do tagging and filtering with Bridge. If you wish to migrate to Bridge
from Organizer you can embed your Organizer tags in the image file metadata
and Bridge will be able to use them. But don't expect the exact same
functionality. Bridge, by the way, has scripting and far superior batch
capability if that's important to you.
CS3 can create a PDF slideshow. And, Bridge has a slideshow for viewing
within Bridge but does not produce a slide show file. If you're expecting a
PSE type slideshow, you're going to be disapointed. PSE is intended to work
with Premiere Elements to produce the full range of Slideshow/DVD
presentations. If you purchase the Master Collection or the Creative Suite
Production Studio, you will get Premiere and you can use that to create
decent slide shows. But that's a very expensive way to go. Frankly, if
slideshows are a big concern, you may be better off with the inexpensive
"ProShow Gold" product (http://www.photodex.com/).

It comes down to how much do you want the PSE Creations and Organizer.
Frankly, you probably don't need PSE if you just get the Photoshop CS3 stand
alone product. Let alone one of the Creative Suites. Do you really need
the Master Collection?
The Master Collection does not include all of Adobe's products. It's pro
oriented and doesn't contain the consumer products. And, also omits
Lightroom and some other products.

  • What is the Illustrator CS3 equivalent to the CorelDraw Contour Tool

I'm very new to AI. I've done a couple of chapters in the AI classroom in a book. Being so new, I don't have a clue what search arguments to use.
I've seen the contour tool in action in a tutorial to do gradients between two paths or around letters. It seems to have the capability to do the gradient from the outside in, inside out or from the center. In the Corel version you can specify the start and end colors as well as the number of steps. An accelerator control will skew the gradient to favor one end or the other.
Is there an equivalent to the CorelDraw contour tool in AI?

Two ways that I can think of at the moment are blends and multiple strokes. Or possibly a combination of the two.

  • INDS CS3 - equivalent to PS "rotate canvas"?

    Hi everybody,
I am pretty new to InDesign and I suspect this is a boneheaded question, but I would really appreciate your help ...
Is there an InDesign command equivalent to the Photoshop "rotate canvas" feature? I am making the layout for a cardboard "digipak" CD case. The construction works like a homemade Christmas card, basically: fold a square in half then fold that in half again. Thus, I need the top/bottom halves of my layout to be oriented 180° against each other (bottom half right side up, top half upside down, as it were).
Having now placed all the graphics to my satisfaction and done the texts of the bottom half, I am desperately searching for a way to rotate my layout 180° so I can work on it comfortably without turning my monitor upside down! The layout is full of a complex set of fold, cut and bleed guides, so I am hoping for an 'in document' solution rather than building another page, flipping it and importing it ...
Thanks in advance for your time!
    - HC

So ... thank for the tip.
I did as you suggested though I am not entirely certain that it worked yet. I imported the new document I made and rotated it into place on my template, but it looks rough as all get out (like the rough graphics placeholders in the workspace do) - this includes the writing: not all vector-perfect, ugly and non-editable. Perhaps I imported it incorrectly?
This work-around still bothers me for a couple of reasons:
    - Photoshop has had a "rotate canvas" feature for year and years so why doesn't InDesign offer that, too?
    - My eye can't handle setting balance and layout upside down even if I find the command to turn the writing over (I presume that isn't so tricky)
    - I also have to place a spine text at 90° to the other text and might want to add text on the back cover also at 90° to the rest.
I would be thrilled to hear some analysis of my importing problem and any other possibilities you see for me!
    Cheers,

  • .mov opened in PSE CS5, saved as .psd, now PSE won't reopen it

I'm working on masking some video, and figured out a workflow that starts in Photoshop Extended CS5 and then moves to After Effects CS5. As instructed by this Adobe tutorial, I can do this by opening my footage (.mov's) in PSE, saving as a .psd, then adding that .psd to AE, which will read all the layers and timelines and effects as they were in PSE.
But after I save that .psd, it wont open in PSE. It gives me this message:
"Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."
even if I try to load the .psd into AE, I get this:
"The Photoshop Library operation failed because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop."
Other threads (e.g.) indicate this is what happens when the file is corrupted, usually due to working off a server or with NAV. but I'm working locally (a 2x3.2ghz MacPro, OSX 10.5.8), and without Norton at all. I also duplicated the process several times (opening a .mov, altering it, saving it as .psd, and trying to reopen) and I got the same message every time. It seems unlikely that each file would get corrupted every single time...
If anyone could help, I would be much much obliged. Merry Christmas!
UPDATE: The .psd will open in PS CS3, but with plenty of CS5 stuff missing. Re-saved as a CS3 psd, and that re-opens in CS3, but not PSE or AE CS5 (as to be expected). Don't know if this matters at all. Thanks!

Is your copy of Photoshop CS5 up to date?  That does sound a little like a bug that was fixed in 12.0.1.
And the simplest answer it is. I updated, and now it's working like a charm. Thanks Chris!
(sorry bout the PSE mixup – what's PS Extended called? PSX?)

How does LR handle backups? Images?
Does LR's folder/file structure corrupt so that image files actually in a folder (per OS) are reported elsewhere?
Can a person map a network drive as a local drive and read/write?
Is there anything like the PSE timeline?
What observations would former PSE users have? Thanks

Just to start, I picked some of your questions.
    >How does LR handle backups? Images?
    Lightroom does backup its catalogue, but the choice is left to you. Since the catalogue is the core of your work with Lightroom (its links to your photos, your adjustments...), it does allow you to backup your catalogue each time that your start Lightroom. But you must set that up in Lightroom and obviously your catalogue backups go to a different disc from your catalogue;
    >Does LR's folder/file structure corrupt so that image files actually in a folder (per OS) are reported elsewhere?
Yes is the simple answer. Once you have imported files into your Lightroom catalogue, Lightroom will remember their location. If you move them outside of Lightroom, it will flag your folder or missing photo. (I would not use the word "corrupt" though to describe Lighroom's ability to track changes to folders/files that you make outside of Lightroom; better to say that Lr does flag changes.)
    >Can a person map a network drive as a local drive and read/write?
Yes for photos but not for catalgoue. See this post for the reason why you cannot have shared catalogues:

    >Is there anything like the PSE timeline?
You can filter your photos based on date. It is not in any way visually similar to PSE's timeline, but it does allow you to browse your photos by date.
Have you downloaded Lightroom? You should try the 30 day trial and if you have any questions, just add them here in this thread and you will get answers and opinions too!! The download link is at the top of this forum.

  • CameraRaw does't start by opening .CR2 with PS CS3 out of PSE7

    Hello,
with PSE 7 I like to start Photoshop CS3 out of PSE 7 with a Canon Raw file (*.cr2). CS3 opens directly the picture without using CameraRaw
Who has an idea how this can be changed? In PSE 5, CS3 starts correct with Camera Raw.

  • Bridge Vs. Photoshop Elements 5.0 Organizer

I posted something similar in the PSE forum without any feedback.
I've used PSE for a while through many versions and have many pictures in the catalog. However I really mostly use the version sets and stacks. A few notes here and there but nothing extensive regarding grouping photos, locations, etc.
I am now moving to CS3 and of course Bridge. I have demo'd it and also read what I can regarding this issue. I understand that importing catalogs into Bridge can be problematic. Although the problems seem less with PSE5??
Anyway, the catalog database is always finicky for me. I always back up the relevant folders because sometime over a span of 3 to 4 months during heavy editing sessions, with it open, it will get confused, corrupted, whatever. And I need to bring back the catalog folders. (Not a restore of all the pix, just the database folders).
It looks like the Bridge database is more robust. And I *know* it is not meant to be a replacement for the PSE organizer. I guess the question is, if I only use the stacks, version sets, and a few notes, for my use, could it be a replacement for my needs???
I just don't like that feeling of not being confident in the catalog database. I know I can send pictures from the PSE catalog to either PSE or Bridge with a few keyboard shortcuts. Although I think I read that if I change the filename or something in CS3 that the PSE catalog will not "remember it" in the version set. They could have integrated these better??? OR at least allowed a more bulletproof import feature.
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Maureen,
    I feel your pain! :)
Yes I have seen that option of writing info to the image metadata. However I don't think it allows you to maintain version stacks and other stacks. Those are also huge to me. I have a similar number of images in a catalog.
One thing you need to be aware of is that when you tell PSE to write that metadata to the image, it changes the system file date (last modified date) of that image. That is a huge negative to me. Although I understand you can still see the image "picture taken date" in the metadata, I use backup software that keys off of the system file date to determine what images need to be synced. I guess I could do it in one big migration....but then, I am not sure I am so confident or happy about having PSE writing data to 1,000's of my original images!!! I mean that catalog is known to get corrupted once in a while! I also like seeing the system file date in windows explorer when browsing images outside of the organizer and knowing those are the dates I put them on my system. If I write all of the tags, all the "last modified" dates will be the date the tags are written.
I really find it very perplexing that does not provide a bullet-proof upgrade path from the PSE organizer to Lightroom and/or Bridge.
How silly is it to pay the prices required to obtain CS3 or CS4, and perhaps Lightroom, and then having to go get the current version of PSE just to maintain a catalog!!
Hopefully a patch or utility will be forthcoming to allow a migration that works. The thought of having to re-stack and re-edit notes for all of my images is not even in the realm of possibility....

  • Old chestnut ? IMAGE PAN

Hi all - just joined the forum today and would appreciate some help from teh great the good and the wise who live here.
I've used Premiere 6.0 for some time now and recently downloaded the CS3 trial.
One of the features that I like most in 6 is the video/transform/ImagePan effect. All I have to do is create a series of keyframes. Each keyframe defines a section of the clip using a bounding box. Hey presto! I have a clip with pan and zoom effects. Perhaps not everybody's cup of tea but I like it.
I've tried to replicate this with the Motion effect without success.
Also I've spent most of yesterday and today on the web, including this forum, trying to find out whether there is a CS3 equivalent but no joy so far.
The closest I've come is the StageTools MovPix plug-in.
Do any of you more senior members know whether I can produce the equivalent effect in CS3 as easily as it is in 6.0?
I'll upgrade to CS3 eventually but don't want to lose some of my favorite effects or go through a steep learning curve...I 'aint that bright!

You will also find links to many
free tutorials in the PremiereProPedia that will quickly show you how things are done in Premiere Pro.

  • Uninstalling CS2

With the purchase of CS3, I have no use for the CS2 I already have on the system. How do I uninstall CS2 and change all the file associations from the CS2 programs to the equivalent CS3 programs?

Thank you for the quick reply.
Do you collaborate with others who may only have CS2? No
Do you ever use ImageReady? No
All the CS3 programs appear to work. just fine.
quote --- installing CS3 defaults all documents to open in the new software. --- /quote
Evidently, that is not completely true. When sorting through files on my computer, it shows them to be associated with GoLive. if I remove GoLive, that is going to mess things up.
So back to the question. How do I uninstall CS2 (or individual programs in CS2 and re-associate files to the CS3 equivalent.

    PSE 5, XP up-date-date
I have made a number of text frames in PSD format using CS2, CS3(beta), and PSE editor. I have attempted to bring them into PSE5 organizer and get in almost but not all cases that opaque message that the images individually are already in the catalog. But they most definitely are not retrieveable by any technique in the organizer. The images do exist in Explorer and can be displayed by CS2, CS3 and PSE5 Editor. What to do?

    >get in almost but not all cases that opaque message that the images individually are already in the catalog. But they most definitely are not retrieveable by any technique in the organizer.
You did not say how you had attempted to retrieve these images in the Organizer. Have you attempted a Find > By File Name when there are no other limitations (like date range) active?
What is the file format and what are typical megapixel dimensions of these files?

  • Digital Camera Noise Removal?

    Hi,
I'm a long-time Paintshop Pro user and have decided to switch products because Corel really hasn't done much to improve on PSP. In PSP9 there is a one-click feature called "Digital Camera Noise Removal". It cleans up the grainy look from digital camera noise, etc. What's the equivalent in PSE 5?
    Thanks.

Because digital noise is very specific to a particular camera, to do this effectively you really need a tool that knows about those characteristics.
However, PSE does have some filters for this - like Reduce Noise.

  • PSE 4.0 Compatibility with CS3?

    Simple question from a newbie. . .
Are .psd files from CS3 downward comaptible with PSE 4.0?

You might want to insure that the PSD files saved in CS3 are saved with "Maximize PSD file Compatibility" turned on in the preferences. I'd think you'd want that particular preference turned on to be on the safe side. Hopefully, Barbara or someone who knows for sure will have something to say about whether that particular preference needs to be on.

  • Open image in PSE organizer with PS CS3?

Is there a way to change the full edit option to open files in Photoshop CS3 instead of Elements editor?

In PSE 5 you can "Enable an additional application for editing photos to
appear under the Edit menu". That's in Organizer Preferences under Editing.
It won't make it the default editor, though.

  • Suddenly PSE 6 And Bridge CS3 Started Crashing

I've been using PSE 6 along with Bridge CS3 on an iMac for about a year and a half now with almost no problems what so ever. Yesterday Bridge crashed and today PSE 6 crashed twice inside of 20 minutes. Idid an update to iTunes and Quicktime about a week or so ago and an update to Flash a couple of days ago. Other than that nothing has changed on my Mac. Has anyone else suddenly starting having problems or is this just my own problem?
    Thanks,
    lmb

No, I haven't done that. I have never repaired permissions after installing auto updates. I'm not the sharpest on a Mac which leads me to this question:
    how do I repair permissions?
    Thank you much!

  • PSE "Remove Color Cast" vs. CS3

I am transitioning from a PSE user to a CS3 user and loving it. I have even happily been able to use the PSE organizer so far with both.
However there is one tool in PSE I cannot find in CS3. I have searched and saw there are a few places where CS3 has some simmilar settings, but nothing that seems to be as easy to use or gives the same results.
Is there a plug-in somehwere that provides this in CS3? For those times when I just want to do a quick color correction, I love that tool in PSE. I tried the detailed methodology of using curves/levels, click this, etc...etc... and although it does eventually get there, results are for sure different and it is more involved. Again, don't mind this if I am spending hours in CS3 working on a bunch of shots from a shoot, but if I just want to color-correct a batch of shots, is there a better way?
Of course I am speaking here of when I am shooting JPEG not RAW.
    Thanks,
    BJBBJB

The tool I am looking for is in PSE where you can click on a white or black section of the picture and it will auto-color correct for that.
Yes I have tried auto color adjustment, however with the cast color correction, you can click on different areas of the picture that are white/near/white, etc. or back/near black until you can get a nice color mix.
And thanks, certainly once you get the correct color layer adjustment and action or drag and drop would work.
I was just wondering if there was something similar. Certainaly CS3 has tons more control and options for getting to the same place. That tool was just nice when you wanted to do a quickie fix and nothing more.
