CS3 Gradient Tool is screwed up

Please forgive me if this has already been discussed.  I searched, but couldn't find it.
I just recently began using the gradient tool, after learning its usefullness with masks.  It worked fine for several weeks, but now I can't get it to work.  I think I might have accidentaly changed default settings.
I dragged the pointer from left to right across the middle of the picture, but instead of going black to transparent (or transparent to black, I never can remember which way it goes), the top went clear & the bottom went dark.   Note that foreground is white & background is black.   When I change to foreground red & background blue (for instance) & draw the line at same place, the top is red & bottom is blue.  If line is drawn top to bottom, left is red & right is blue.
What am I doing wrong?
Actually, I 1st tried to use this on a mask.  When that didn’t work, I tried it on a “regular” layer.  This isn’t the 1st time I’ve had this problem.  It been consistently screwed up for several weeks now.
I tried “Reset Gradients”, but that didn’t fix anything.  I also made sure that “Dither” & “Transparency” are checked, as they are on my laptop, which is working OK.
Most of my Photoshop work is pretty basic stuff, so please provide "basic" answers w/o "buzz words" that might be over my head.
Thanks

Note that foreground is white & background is black.   When I change to foreground red & background blue (for instance) & draw the line at same place, the top is red & bottom is blue.  If line is drawn top to bottom, left is red & right is blue.
Which gradient do you have selected anyway?

    This driving me mad... any help out there?

    mr.roo,
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Illustrator crashes when changing color on gradient tool.

    In any file, even a brand new, empty artboard, when I double click on the color box on the gradient tool bar ON THE OBJECT (not on the Gradient tool box, I've included an image below) to change the color, Illustrator crashes every single time without fail.
    I can't seem to find the issue. I'm running on Windows 7 Pro

  • Gradient Tool Resets

    Hello,
    Just got the latest update for Illustrator CC... seemed to fix a few problems and now the gradient tool resets upon use, everytime.
    When I try to change a swatch color in the gradient, as soon as I click it the gradient box disables itself.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you.

    TJProg,
    It may be time for the list. And maybe one of the easy ones at the top is enough.

  • Blur with gradient tool / Lens blur

    Hi everybody,
    I want to make some blur effects like miniature effect or open apperature lens blur.
    Currently I'm using the gradient tool with negative sharpness. But I think in 100% zoom, the effect looks a litte bit like on/off. Or is the visible effect just non-linear??
    Furthermore it would be create to simulate a lense blur effect in the corners. Currently I have to add at minimum 4 gradients, one in each corner. That's no effective
    Otherwise it would be possible to implementate a radial gradient mask additionally to the normal linear gradient. Also a reflected gradient mask, would be useful.
    Lightroom is great!!
    Thanks,
    Leschi

    -51 to -100 sharpness is lens blur.  It's power is limited by the amount of time it takes to calculate this sort of effect - bigger = longer.

  • Problems with gradient tool bar not remaining on object applied in illustrator cc

    Hello,
    when applying a gradient to a rectangle i will get the gradient tool, click on the left half of the object i want it applied to and while holding down drag a line to thew right hand side of the object. the problem the arises when i release the mouse as the gradient bar that has been shown while holding down then disappears. this applies the gradient but the issue is that all gradient editing has to be done on the gradient window as a posed to live on the object slowing the work flow.
    I am not sure what I'm doing wrong but help would be much appreciated.
    Kind regards

    Just for the sake of learning how to use the tool i start with drawing a rectangle then click and drag the gradient tool across the box. i see the gradient line appear but when i release the mouse the gradient line disappears
    i end up witha box with a gradient but all my editing has to be done in the gradient box as shown in this screen shot:

    Somehow I got two circles with hash marks (on the outer edge @45 degree intervals) that appear using the gradient tool.  Not sure how I got them there nor do I know how to get rid of them

    You can click and drag them and it makes a sort of global gradient.

  • How do I fade all four sides of a photo with gradient tool?

    Recently I made 2 collages by stacking 5 files (one central photo with a smaller one in each corner). I added a layer mask to each of the corner photos and was able to fade/blend the corner photos into the main picture using the gradient tool. Now when I try what I THINK is the same process, I can only fade a SINGLE side of each corner photo!! When I try to fade other edges it UNDOES the side I just faded! I can only fade one side of the photo!  I don't THINK I changed anything since making the first 2 collages. I am slightly panicked because I have 14 more to make in the next few weeks and suddenly I hit a brick wall!  Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?? Thanks!

    A layer mask is a selection  and you can save selections as alpha channels.  Alpha Channel can be combined into new Alpha channels.  So you can build  your layer mask in stages if you want.    Once you have create one of the required five layer mask you can unlink it from the layer content and save it as an Alpha channel named "Image 1" then transform the layer mask to the other four other locations and sizes. Saving alpha channels in each location named "Image 2" "Image 3" "Image 4" and "Image 5" .  You can then delete the layer with the layers mask. For when you save the Background layer with the five Image Alpha channels as a PSD file. You have a collage template that can be easily populated.  You can also add layers over the background layer that can embellish the collages with. For example add a mat  layer with five image areas cut outs. Use the five Image alpha channels loaded as a combined selection then cutting the areas out image areas of a mat  layer. Then add a texture and style to the mat layer.

  • Gradient tool doesn't work with gradients on strokes?!

    Okay, so one of the new flagship features of Illustrator CS6 is gradients on strokes, but you can't use the Gradient Tool with them? I just get a crosshairs pointer with a "no" sign next to it. What's up with that?? I can see why this wouldn't work with shapeburst mode, but linear and even angular gradients (to set the center point) should be no problem.
    In addition to this, here is another bug I discovered:
    In earlier versions of Illustrator, you were allowed to use the Gradient Tool to adjust the direction of a shape's gradient even when the shape's stroke was in the foreground. Now that Illustrator can apply gradients to strokes, it is understandable that, if a shape has a transparent stroke, Illustrator will prevent you from using the Gradient Tool on the shape if the stroke is in the foreground.
    But the opposite should also be true: if you have a shape with a gradient stroke and a transparent fill, Illustrator should prevent you from using the Gradient Tool if the fill is in the foreground. But it doesn't. Illustrator will happily respond to the new gradient direction, but the gradient of the stroke will not change, and the fill stays transparent.

    Adobe tends to introduce half a feature, then abandon it and never develop it further.
    Or charge for the fix in CS7!
    Couldn't have said it better myself. I get so sick of half-baked "glorious new features" in this program that--as you two state--either never get fleshed out, or require hundreds of dollars spent to get something that feels finished years later--and then start the whole cycle all over again on something else.
    I haven't even been able to order CS6 yet, because Adobe's "upgrade" policy is as convoluted as Illustrator itself. First mistake was buying into the Master Collection collection when it was first offered (something I've increasingly regretted since).
    Like doubtless thousands of others, I did not upgrade to the much-ado-about-nothing half-baked CS5.5 middle version, because it offered next to nothing (and absolutely nothing in regards to Illustrator). So Master Collection CS5 owners are penalized for this a niggling $25 over and above what the same "upgrade" costs those who bought the CS5.5 non-version--but have to jump through the ridiculous, unnecessary hoop of first "upgrading" to the already defunct CS5.5, and then wait for permission from Adobe to "upgrade" from that to CS6.--AND you have to do all this before a couple-week's deadline.
    So I'm sitting here with an utterly useless CS5.5 DVD, which I am dreading to install. I have absolutely no use at all for this version. But I have to install it (and you know how that can go) anyway, because Adobe says you can't install the CS6 upgrade version without having CS5.5 installed. This is an utterly stupid practice that NEEDS TO STOP. It is no small burden to run Adobe's bloated installers on a large bundle package like this. Having to do it twice for my $600 "upgrade" to CS6--just to get AI to run as a 64-bit application--just adds insult to injury.
    All this stupid tedium just because Adobe couldn't bring itself to allow the regular upgrade purchase to apply to a mere one full-version back!
    And, of course, the also-stupid disparity between Acrobat and the CS bundles continues. To stay current with with Acrobat, you have to "upgrade" to new versions which are released midway between the CS versions. So much for the "all inclusiveness" of the so-called Master Collection.
    Each release has two or three half-baked "new" features which, in practice, simply do not justify the inflated upgrade pricing. Rather than being excited about new functionality, I grit my teeth each time this happens.
    Meanwhile, Corel's no-nonsense upgrade to its CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6 (also 64-bit) is $200, and is available to users of two full versions back--without a penalty for having skipped a version they didn't find worthwhile, and without a must-do-it-now time limit.
    And of course Illustrator's text handling remains attrocious. It still can't do ordinary brain-dead simple live shape primitives. It's snaps are pathetic. It has no dimension tools, connector lines, callouts. In other words, the decades-old long list of missing ordinary basic functionality remains. And we pay hundreds of dollars for yet another re-do of its never-get-it-right window dressing.
    What a mess! Adobe needs some serious competition.

  • Gradient Tool Bug: Highlights 'Square'

    I was using the gradient tool to reduce some patches of highlights - so I set Highlights to a negative value and as I painted on them - a strange expanded "square" surrounded where I was painting (about 1" square). It mirrored my brush movements and within the square it slightly darkened pixels so it made the square easily detectible.  And, it did not seem like the negative highlight brush was working.  Highlights were marked by the red clipping and as I brushed on one particular spot - other spots within that square would flicker and seemingly be manipulated at the same time but I don't believe they were. It made the brush process confusing as I could not determine if the negative highlight value had any affect at all.

    Just checking:  are you using the gradient tool or the adjustment brush tool?  Sounds like the adjustment brush tool.

  • Gradient Tool Question

    Is there a way to specify the begin and end exposure adjustment on the gradient tool?
    What I really want to do is apply an even exposure adjustment to the bottom section of an image. There's a hard line where I want the adjustment to begin, so I don't really need a gradient. I know I can do this with the adjustment, but that requires passing the brush over a large section of the image and, of course, being very careful in lining the edge of the brush up with the edge of what I want to lighten. I'd like to be able to put a line across the image and say "lighten everything below this line" by x amount.
    Any way to do that?
    Thanks.

    You wrote:

    You apply the graduated filter from the botto up if you want to change the bottom part of the image and you apply it from the top down if you want to change the top part of the image.
    "Bottom" and "Top" (where you start the grad filter) means the bottom / top margin of the image and then you drag up or down.
    If you don't see the white / light grey lines of the grad filter press letter "H" on the keyboard. You can adjust the transition zone by dragging the lines  closer together or farther apart. You can rotate the grad filter: hover with the mouse over the center line and a curved arrows icon appears. Then drag to rotate.
    Apart from that you can adjust the Exposure, Brightness, Contrast, etc. with the sliders. You can also apply a coloring by clicking on the small icon besides the word <Color>. You can choose from the preset colors that are like warming / cooling fiolters in traditional (film-based) photography ar you can select a color from the image by dragging the eye-dropper into the image.

  • Aspect ratio lock / gradient tool / brush /  doesn't remember status

    hello,
    why do i always have to tell the aspect ratio lock 1023429384 times to lock itself until it remembers it's status?
    it's the same with the brush or gradient tool. it remembers only it's previous status which is kind of total nonsense and annoying.
    what am i doing wrong?
    thank you!
    geerd

    Frustrating isn't the word.
    I reported this through a previous post (much the same as you are experiencing).
    crop not keeping to ratio
    It was ok in LR3 and is ok in LR5 (I think)
    so they have fixed the bug, but where does that leave the LR4.4 users ??
    Upgrade to LR5 ?
    Surely there should be a LR4.4 bug fix that can be downloaded instead of yet another purchase to upgrade.
