CS3 Hangs Saving NEF File

Hi,
When I try to "Save As" a NEF file created from a Nikon D90, Photoshop CS3 hangs and I have to turn my computer off. It works fine with NEF files created with my older D70. I have Camera Raw 4.6 installed. If anyone aware of this problem?
Thanks,
Tracy

Gary,
There have been several reports here of folks who have problems using their computers (and/or Photoshop) if there is a disc in the drive as you have. As I recall, the solution (or workaround, if you prefer) is simply to copy whatever files you need for the day's session off the disc onto your hard drive. Remove the disc from the drive.

  • DW CS3 hangs at 'initializing files' on Mac

I've been evaluating DW/CS3 for Mac for a number of sites
that I run. Once during evaluation, I got into a state where DW
would not start but would instead hang at "initializing files" and
never actually start up. With a largely random of combination of
Tech Article and Web Folklore, I managed to get it started and
    continued with the eval.
Ultimately, I decided that the only thing worse than DW was
every thing else, so I purchased it.
Today I went to start up DW again. Same problem - it just
won't start. Failure to launch is bad. Very bad. My copy is still
shrink-wrapped, and I have a little bit left on my 30 day eval so I
could return it if this is just a black hole. Is this something I
can look forward to every couple of days in DW (and if so, is there
a recipe for actually using the program) or should I look toward
getting out from under this program before I break the shrinkrwap
    and getting a refund?
Is there some way to get to advanced features like (gasp) the
program starting? Is there some known trigger for this that can be
    avoided?
    Thanx,
    RJL

    - delete the site cache in question "C:\Documents and

  • CS3 problems reading NEF Files after installing Yosemite

Since updating to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro, CS3 no longer works properly.
Instead of thumbnails, Bridge displays icons for Nikon NEF images. When I click on the icon, I’m told “Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file.” (The metadata is displayed, however.)
When I attempt to open the image directly through Photoshop, I’m presented with a Photoshop Raw Options window asking me to describe the dimensions of the image. (I don’t know how to do anything other than guess at the size, and when the image opens, it looks like grey noise on an old TV screen.)
I’ve reinstalled CS3 but the problems remain.
I'd be grateful for any advice.

When you reinstalled CS3, did you also install all updates? The reinstall will not do this.
ACR 4.6 and PS 10.01 are the latest.

  • Photoshop cs3 hangs when using  "File open"

I am running Photoshop CS3 extended on an HP desktop XP( fully updated) computer - 2 GB RAM -running fine util tonight when i tried to do a "file>open" the file menu idsappears in a split second and then it locks. It acts the same when i use the keyboard shortcut. But if i reopen it and try to open a file through Bridge-it works fine. it also allows me to open recent files.

    bernadettebuechler,
Are you allowing enough time for PS to do its "thing?" By that, I mean that since CS, PS loads and looks ready. Count to 5, and all of a sudden, you will see the hourglass up for a moment. Count to 2, and the hourglass will flash on very briefly. Then, it's ready to go. I've only had one PS lockup from ver. 2.5, and it was because I was anxious to go, PS "looked" ready to go, and I hit File>Open too soon. Palettes go white, "Not Responding" shows in the program title bar, and boom - a lockup.
Speculation was afoot, back when Activation began, CS, that PS was "phoning home," to check with Adobe, to see if all was OK. This was never confirmed, and people without an Internet connection still had this little pause, though their program ran fine, without the Internet.
I quickly learned to be patient, until I see the two hourglass "blinks." This is on two very fast systems, though with CS2. My speculation is that the reason that PS will run fine when an image in Bridge, or Windows Explorer launches it, is that you (and I) are not hitting keys, while it does its little hourglass dance. Instead, we're waiting for our image to Open, and PS is smart enough to not fully load that, until it's good and ready.
I hope that this is what you encountered and nothing more sinister.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS watch for the two hourglass blinks. First is longer - pause - quick blink - good to go.

  • CS3 Hangs Open a File from a DVD

I was opening some images from a DVD and everything was ok. Then Photoshop hung up and I had to force quit. After that I could not open any files even ones on my local drive. I launched other CS3 apps and they worked fine opening from both the DVD and the local drive. I launched Photoshop and created a new image and tried to save it and it hung up. Finally I launched photoshop and quit it without trying to open anything, then launched it again and it worked. I also had rebooted the machine at times in this sequence.
A few days later I put a DVD in and it happened again. This time nothing worked until I removed the DVD from the drive.
Every application can read and open files from the DVD drive including other Adobe apps. I am not sure if this is an issue with Photoshop CS3 or the drive. Can just Photoshop have trouble accessing the drive?

  • Photoshop CS3 Hangs when opening files

PS hangs when opening, duplicating images. The longer it's on the longer the wait. I'm talkin' 15 - 20 seconds. Deleted the prefs multiple times.
    Anybody else having this problem?

Set your default printer to something local, that is actually hooked up.
When Photoshop creates the document, it asks for the default printer information - and your printer driver is taking a nap while trying to connect to the printer.

  • Why only 10-bit depth dng files from 16-bit Nikon D90 nef files?

When I convert 16-bit .nef files from my Nikon D90 to DNG I get only 10-bits depth.
Since the camera should be producing 12-bit depth it seems I am losing information in the conversion, and I don't want that.
I have installed the 7.1 DNG converter, and I suppose that is what is used when I download from camera memory card through Bridge 5.1 and click dng conversion.
Same thing if I open the .nef in Photoshop 5.1 , which kicks up CameraRaw converter 6.7.0.339.
    Why is this?
Can't .dng have more than 10-bit depth?
    Sverk

Well, according to the user manual and to the review in
    http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D90/D90A.HTM
the D90 delivers 12-bit color depth in the .NEF files.
Of course, I haven't looked at the actual pixel data to find out how finely graded they are.
What I'm looking at is what Bridge 5.1 (WindowsXP) says about the files in the
    Metadata/ Bit depth entry.
In that, the .NEF files are listed as "16-bit" depth (although it will actually hold only 12-bit resolution), but when converted to .DNG it says only  "10-bit",
and that holds both when the conversion is done automatically during the importing from the camera, and when converting from .nef files afterwards.
Archiving pictures in the .dng format seems to be a good idea -- but only if no information is lost in the conversion.
Thus, the "10-bit" info showing in Bridge worries me.
Might it be that the meaning of bit depth is different in the two file formats?
Might there be something about the de-mosaicing that necessarily consumes two bits of depth?   Whether in the .dng conversion -- or when saved .nef files are later to be used?
In other words, for practical purposes, are the formats equivalent in color resolution,
Or is there indeed a certain loss?
Maybe a very difficult question, but I'd sure want to have a technical ly definite answer before I dare switch to using the .DNG format all the way.

  • PS CS3, Camera Raw 4.6 Update and Nikon D810 NEF File Reading Issue

      Currently Have Photoshop CS3 & Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9.
According to Adobe, Camera Raw 4.6 supports Nikon D810 NEF files.  I have downloaded Camera Raw 4.6 Update. When
I try to open Nikon D810 NEF files, I get Photoshop CS3  error that says
"cannot complete request your because it is not the right kind of
document. These NEF files wont open in Adobe Bridge at all.  What am I doing wrong?

    Hey,
Before I purchased, let me get your thoughts on another option that just occurred to me which involves:
1)Editing my D810 NEF files in LR 5.6, which I have, then exporting/saving the edited files as JPEGs.
    2) Doing any additional editing, as necessary (i.e. that might require layering or selections..etc) , with the JPEGs  with Bridge or PS CS3.
This method wont involve any additional software purchase now.. right?    Am I missing anything.   here?    Since my final output to my customers are JPEGs any way, wont this work?   Will I be at any disadvantage.   Am I missing anything.   here?

  • Metadata in Bridge CS3 lost after editing NEF file in Capture NX2

Entered keywords and metadata in Bridge CS3, edited NEF file in Capture NX2 and then all metadata in Bridge got lost even if I did not edit any metadata in Capture.
Original Bridge metadata are still saved in XMP file but Bridge does not show them nor can search or sort photos by them.
Is it a Bridge bug or is it connected with any settings?
    Win XP, Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9, Capture NX2 2.2.0, Nikon D300
Will appreciate any help, thanks a lot.

First I renamed photos in Bridge - sidecar XMP files were created with the new filename already, added some keywords and metadata in Bridge. Edited photo in Capture but not changed the name again - the result was the Bridge does not show edited metadata and keywords anymore even all those info are still saved in sidecar XMP file. Capture apparently does not change XPM in any way.
It looks like all the problems are connected with renaming files in Bridge before editing them in Capture as if Bridge cannot read XMP after Capture added its own info in NEF file.

I have Photoshop CS3 which I have used successfully for a number of years.  I now shoot pics with a Nikon DSLR D7100. When I try to open NEF files the following flag appears: "Could not complete your request because PS does not recognize this file".  What do I need to do to open my NEF files??  Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply, CP
FYI, the file is a photographic panorama based on several .CR2 photos taken in July, 2012 and processed in CS5's camera RAW/Photoshop.  Beyond the metadata, here are no fonts or text in the file.
    1.  I changed Maximize ...File Capability from "Never" to "Always" and the flattened file saved and loaded OK, though I can't figure why given Adobe's description of this option. "If you work with PSD and PSB files in older versions of Photoshop or applications that don’t support layers, you can add a flattened version of the image to the saved file...".  The file saved in this manner is ~8% larger and is not my preference as a routine since I've TB's of photo files.  By the way, out of thousands of .psd/.psb files, the one being discussed is the first to give me the error.
    2.  I've tried saving/reloading the file on another computer with Win XP Sp3/CS5...again with Maximize Capability OFF.  Same problem.  Turn ON Maximize Capability and it works.  As with the Win 8 machine, Bridge could neither create a thumbnail or read Metadata.
    3.  I've purged the Bridge Cache, made sure there were no old PS page files, reset PS preferences, and disabled my 2 plugins with no change in the problem.  Windows and Adobe progs are all updated.  Saving to a different HDD has no effect.
The problem occurs on 2 computers (Win XP/Win 8), two versioins of Photoshop (CS5/CS6), and "Maximize" On/Off togles the problem.  My guess it is a bug in PSD processing routines.
If I can't find a fix, will keep with Maximize ON and deal with the larger files that result...the cost of insurance, I suppose.
    Thanks again

  • Photoshop CS3 error saving files - Could not save ... because the fileis already in use or was left

I have a problem with Adobe Photoshop CS3 that only started happening last night. Heres a description of the problem.
When I try and save a Photoshop file, I get the following error message:-
Could not save (filename). because the file is already in use or was left open
I have rebooted my computer, rebooted our server, un-installed & reinstalled Photoshop and also done a system restore, and I still have the problem. (The system restore actually caused huge problems I got the error message The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall or call customer support, except I wasnt able to reinstall or uninstall the product. The computer just would not run the installer. I had to undo the system restore.)
I can do Save For Web with no trouble and I can save files to the same location with every other Adobe product installed in the Web bundle, just not Photoshop.
We have 2 machines here with an identical set up (hardware and software) and the problem is only on one machine.
Even though Photoshop says it cant save the file, its actually saving the file in the following format:-
~psX.tmp where X is a random variable, either characters or numbers.
I have to manually open My Documents and rename the file to filename.psd so I can access it again.
Short of reformatting my computer (which Im not keen on doing because it will mean several wasted work hours and I will have to pay our IT people to come in and hook me back up to our network), how can this problem be fixed?
I have also Googled the problem and the only help I found was a suggestion to search for a psicon.dll file and rename it. This file does not appear anywhere on my system, so I'm at a loss.
I have contacted support about this issue, but thought it was also worth while to ask here at the same time.

I'm having similar problems with not being able to save files after editing them (and giving them a new file-name, obviously) in Photoshop Elements 4.0. I get an error message saying (for instance): "Could not save as (whatever I'm trying to name the file) because the file is already in use or was left open". Then I see a .tmp file (that I can't open)
I did a search and found that the file was being saved twice, once within Photoshop (where I'm working with it) and also in..
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Pictures\Temporary"
I'm assuming this is the problem, but if you have any clue as to why is this happening and what I can do about it, I'd welcome any input. I've been using PSE-4.0 for years, and this problem just started cropping up. The only (cumbersome) way around this problem has been to just make my edits (in PSE-4.0) and do a "save" under the original file name, then go into explorer and rename the file. So, in short, I cannot do what I've been doing for years, editing a picture and saving it (renamed) in the sane folder (or a different one).
I can "see" the .tmp files in PSE-4.0, but they won't open.. but they will in JASC.. odd..
    Thanks-
    Bob

If you are working with a file you modified in Lightroom, you should go to the Lightroom Photo menu and choose Edit in... and the version of Photoshop you want to open it in.
There a dialog will ask if you want to transfer the LR settings you made to your photo when you open in Photoshop.

  • Some Nikon D300 NEF files don't appear in Bridge CS3 (Mac)

    Hi all,
I'm using a Nikon D300 and just upgraded to CS3 on my MAC in no small part because the D300 was not supported by CS2. I am running into a problem though.
I always shoot in both JPEG and RAW modes. When I open Bridge I always see each JPEG version of a shot.
However, only about 50% of the time can I see the NEF (RAW) version of the thumbnail. The rest of the time I only see a generic "RAW" thumbnail with no image. This sporadic NEF viewability carries over to the preview pane when I select such a NEF file.
Furthermore, Camera Raw cannot open the NEF files that are not visible in Bridge. When I try opening them I get a message saying "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this file type."
I have tried purging the Cache (through Tools) as some indicated in other forums threads but this has not helped. I have also downloaded the ACR 4.4 plugin and installed it in the correct library location.
Has anyone else experienced this (whether on a Nikon or other camera)? Any advice?
    Thanks

I've finally solved the problem with having only some of my NikonD300 NEF files viewable in Bridge/readable by Photoshop! Jon Michael Riley had said he was having similar problems so I wanted to make sure he and anyone else has the info on what worked for me.
The issue does not have anything to do with purging the thumbnail cache or installing the latest version of Camera RAW 4.4.1. While they were good suggestions (offered by Adobe's Technical support people also), they do not resolve this particular issue.
I read that an earlier version of what Jon described as "Nikon's clunky software" had corruption issues when images were first transfered from the camera via Nikon PictureProject Transfer. It looks like the latest incarnation has the same issues. Nikon products can see the transfered images without a problem. HOWEVER, Adobe Bridge/Photoshop cannot rectify the corruption issue caused by transferring photos using Nikon's utility.
So here's the solution: DO NOT use Nikon PictureProject Transfer! It is a piece of garbage! Instead, make ADOBE PHOTO DOWNLOADER the default tool to transfer images from the camera. To make it default do the following:
Open Bridge, pull down the Bridge CS3 Preferences. Select the "General" preferences set. On this screen you will see "Behavior". The first clickable box reads "When a camera is connected launch Adobe Photo Downloader". Select this box to render this the default transfer tool.
If you still have the pictures on your memory cards you can re-transfer them using Adobe Photo Downloader. All your NEF files should now be readable by Bridge/Photoshop. I've told Adobe Tech Support about this problem with Nikon's software. Hopefully they'll be able to check this as an option if others call in with similar problems.
Unfortunately I have not figured out how to repair the corruption in the files I transfered earlier using Nikon's piece of garbage software. Since I don't have the images on memory cards anymore I can't just re-transfer them. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to do this? Will I ever be able to access my earlier NEF shots?
    Cheers,
    Greg
