CS3 hangs up on reading preferences

All of a sudden CS3 hangs up at the splash screen while reading preferences, I gave it 5 minutes but the busy circle just keeps spinning and the program won't open.
I have a brand new laptop running Windows 7 and  CS3 was working!

Thanks I will keep this in mind, but finally after just letting ti go, it opened!  Then I closed it and reopened it and it opened normally without haning up, just a weird glitch I guess?

  • CS3 slow reading preferences

I have CS3 10.0.1, Vista Ultimate and 3Gb of ram. Until a week ago, CS3 was running fine - quick start up, quick file opening, quick filters. However, for reasons I can't fathom, it has started to take around 30 seconds on "Reading Preferences" during start up, and around 40 seconds to open a 22.8Mb file (with a "Progress/Reading Photoshop Format..." dialogue and progress box).
I have no network printer and have deleted and reset my "Preferences". Made no difference.
I have not installed any soft- or hard-ware which I can imagine conflicting with CS3 in some way.
Grateful for any ideas on how to get back my normal CS3 performance.
    Thanks
    David

I think I may have fixed the problems. This is what happened:
    - I downloaded and ran the CS3 Cleaner (meant for CS3 Betas I think).
    - Discovered that not only had this removed CS3 but also Dreamweaver CS3.
    - Was now able to reinstall CS3 but not Dreamweaver (nor uninstall it)
    - Tried a System Restore but this did not work and Dreamweaver continued to be unusable and uninstallable.
    - had very recently backed up whole C drive with Acronis 11 and decided to restore all the Adobe Program Files.
    - Did this and was invited to add in serial codes for CS3 and Dreamweaver.
    - After this but Dreamweaver and CS3 were completely back to normal but with the advantage that the long delays I had had with CS3 loading (waiting for "Reading Preferences") had disappeared and CS3 was quick again.
I don't understand it but am very relieved to have the programs back to normal.

  • Cs3 won't start and hand on "reading preferences"

    Hello
All of a sudden my photoshop won't start and hang on the splash screen " the last message is "reading preferences"
    I Run WINXP service pack2.
    Photoshop version is 10.0.1
I rebooted did everything (without re-installing)
Is there a way to get out of this ?
    Bruno

You could try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

Well here it is a year later and daylight savings has ended.
Everytime I try to open a dynamic page, Dreamweaver CS3 hangs.
So I find this thread, delete the winfilecache.dat file, and all is well.
    >The question is, how do we disable this?
So DWQues, the answer is out there for those with open minds.
I doubt DWQues will ever come this way again, but I am sure others will.

  • CS3 hangs in Vista 64 SP1 (sudden error)

    Hello,
I'm going to describe this as best as I can: I have Design Premium CS3 installed for a couple of days now on my new Vista64 Home Premium, and it was working perfectly until today. I installed: Illustrator, Indesign, Dreamweaver, Photoshop CS3, Acrobat 8 out of the complete package. Suddenlty today, Photoshop will hang when I try to open it. Not even the intro screen appears, but the process can be seen in the task manager (processes tab), still open, but with a particular memory size: 4740 k (it doesn't change or nothing). CPU usage is at 00. It won't show in the application manager. The thing is, all the rest of the apps I installed work perfectly. Only PS is giving me this trouble.
I have been browsing this forums the whole night, and this is what I found as a possible solution:
Vista64hates CS3, "Photoshop (CS3) Hangs When Started" #20, 12 Aug 2008 8:57 pm (check out the guy who posts as VistaHatesCs3)
It didn't work. Can anybody help with this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Francisco G.

what do you mean you "lost the files"? anyway they should be recreated on first (successful) use.
i'd try to disconnect from the internet, disable firewall and anti-virus and try again. also might want to give that link in the other thread a try again. it does sound like something's trying to kick in and it's being stopped (the adobe licensing service most likely).

  • Reader Crashes when accessing Reading preferences

Pretty much what the title says.  Everytime I try to access the Reading preferences section it crashes 100% of the time.  I need to change the default setting (which I'm assuming is in the Reading preferences section) that tells the window what size % to open the windows at as it's opening every document I open at 173% which is rediculous as a default!  How do I access this setting when all it does is crash when I try?

  • PSE 5.0 won't load past "Reading Preferences"

Reinstalled PSE 5.0 on new computer running Windows 7.  Downloaded the service pack for PSE 5.0.2.  Read that I needed to adjust the compatibility to Windows XP (service pack 3)  PSE opens, but only as far as "Reading Preferences," then never goes farther.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't have much idea about PSE5 but try resetting the preferences:
    1. Close Elements.
    2. Launch the Photoshop Elements Welcome Screen and hold down ctrl + alt + shift as you click Editor.
    3. Continue to hold the keys until you see a message box asking if you want to delete Photoshop Elements settings file; click Yes. Elements will open with default preferences.

  • Indesign CS3 hangs when launching - I have found a temp solution

I upgraded to snow leopard and ran into a problem straight away with Indesign CS3 hanging when I tried to launch it.
I have done some searching round the web and noticed a large number of posts stating the same.
I noticed, upon starting up for the first time in 10.6, that snow leopard asked me to install rosetta to run suitcase fusion v12.0. Out of curiosity I shut suitcase fusion down and tried to launch Indesign and I got a result. It launches fine and doesn't seem to suffer any crashes. It leaves me without a decent font manager but will allow me to get through the next few weeks until an update gets released (if apple puts some pressure on adobe)!
    Hope it helps!

    Hi RebeccaWooWah,
Please check "Applications" folder, you would see a file named "Adobe".
Kindly delete the file, as it is corrupt.
Create a folder "Adobe" in Applications folder, issue should be fixed.

  • I am having problem with Photoshop CS3 hanging

I am having a lot of problems with Photoshop CS3 hanging and crashing. Particularly when I open hi-res photos and click on tools, like the type tool. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?
    Thanks.

Buy more RAM, plain and simple. Sounds the program is severely suffocating. for on-screen display fonts need also be rasterized, which also costs RAM, even if they otherwise remain native vectors. How much memory do you have? as a short term solution, you may wish to increase the program's RAM usage in the prefs, but it may not resolve the issues entirely.

  • CS3 Hangs Saving NEF File

    Hi,
When I try to "Save As" a NEF file created from a Nikon D90, Photoshop CS3 hangs and I have to turn my computer off. It works fine with NEF files created with my older D70. I have Camera Raw 4.6 installed. If anyone aware of this problem?
    Thanks,
    Tracy

    Gary,
There have been several reports here of folks who have problems using their computers (and/or Photoshop) if there is a disc in the drive as you have. As I recall, the solution (or workaround, if you prefer) is simply to copy whatever files you need for the day's session off the disc onto your hard drive. Remove the disc from the drive.

  • DW CS3 Hangs on exit

Has anyone else experienced a recent phenomenon where DW CS3 Hangs on exiting with Vista. This is new and started without any new extensions, but possibly after some windows updates. I'm running Vista Home Premium x64 with UAC off, and the error is:
The program Dreamweaver.exe version 9.0.0.3481 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.
The Event ID is 1002 with a Task Category of 101.
Everything works fine except when I am done working and try to close the program.

Yes, it's starting happening for me 'recently'.  It started happening on my laptop running Vista.
I've moved from XP to Windows 7 Ultimate on my desktop and it now happens there as well.
This week, I moved from Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium (fresh install) on my laptop and it is still happening.
I have found that if you open Dreamweaver and immediately close it without opening any files then it is ok, but if you open any file, close it, then close Dreamweaver then it just hangs. If you click the Windows close icon a few times then you get the 'look for solution', 'wait' or 'close immediately' options. If you view the crash details it says:
    Description:
A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.

  • Reading preferences takes forever

Hi all! I'm a new poster, but desperately hoping someone can help me out. I'm running CS4 in XP on a fast system with plenty of RAM. The last few weeks, loading up is taking a looong time. The start-up screen shows "reading preferences" for 2 - 3 minutes most times. I've re-set and trashed my preferences file with no change. I've also removed all plug-ins, also with no change. Once PS is up, it works normally. Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!
    -Tracie

I think the network printer thing is related to slow file opening rather than slow start-up.
What method are you using to reset the preferences?
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.

  • Reader Preference Registry Settings

I found that Tuner does not expose any of the Reader preferences that I want to set, so I'm trying to find out how to use registry settings to create default preferences. I have been unable to find any documentation of specific registry keys/values that correspond to the Reader preferences, so I've been experimenting, trial and error, with changing a preference setting and trying to locate changed registry entries - not very efficient. Anyone know of a source of info?
From a Tuner-related Question Log I found when searching adobe.com, I see how to include registry info in a Tuner package, and I think I understand how to use the Installer\Migrate key under HKLM, but my experimentation hasn't been entirely successful.
The preferences I'm trying to set are:
    -Internet:
    - Display PDF in browser
    - Check Browser settings...
    - Connection speed
    -Startup
    - Show messages and automatically update (not sure what this does, but I'm trying to prevent any automatic update attempts)
    -Updates
    - Check for updates
    - Display notification dialog at startup
Under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\6.0\Installer, I created key Migrate and added the following values (all REG_DWORD):
    - iConnectionSpeed=0x00989680
    - bBrowserCheck=0x0
    - bBrowserIntegration=0x0
    - bShowAutoUpdateConfDialog=0x0
    - bShowNotifDialog=0x0
    - iUpdateFrequency=0x0
This seems to successfully set the Display PDF in browser to unchecked and Connection speed to LAN for a new user, but Check browser settings and Show messages and automatically update are still checked.
Is there a different/better way to accomplish this?

    I guess I was sleepy... it's [11.0.10] not 10.0.10
At any rate, the key path I used mentioned @ http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/QuickKeys/EnhancedSecurityQuickKeyAll.pd f (for reader 11.x) is
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown]; I noticed they also show up in the equivalent key under Wow6432Node.
I even restarted these PC's after ensuring the registry values were all there - but it was the same situation after reboot.
I don't know how it would matter, but some additional details that may help:
All the values all being applied from the SYSTEM user, as I'm deploying these as a Compliance Baseline from Configuration Manager.
it might be possible that all affected installations were installed with an .mst
