CS3: HDR Merge Problem with Canon 50d RAW files

I recently upgraded from a 20D to a 50D.  I'm running CS3 under WinXPpro with 3GB of RAM.  HDR merge of 3 CR2 files is causing CS3 to generate a program error and crash.  This never happened with my older (smaller) files from the 20D.  Anybody know how to fix this?
TIA,

The suggestion was to try an HDR with smaller 50D sRAWs as an *experiment* to see if the size matters more than the camera model.  Another benefit of a 50D would be the 14-bits per pixel instead of 12-bits and an sRAW would have less noise per pixel than a full-size RAW so using smaller sRAW images might work better than a 20D's.
The "size" being referred to is the dimensions in pixels, not the on-disk size, becasue the in-memory size of an image should be similar whether it comes from a 16-bit TIFF or an 16-bit RAW conversion.
Merging RAWs will involve ACR during the HDR process, whereas merging TIFFs won't unless you have the setting to prefer ACR for TIFFs, too, which you don't indicate.
There can be data in the highlights and especially shadows from a RAW that gets thrown away when it's converted to TIFF, so merging RAWs is better than merging from TIFFs.
I currently have CS4 only on my machine so I forget, but with CS3, does it matter what output size you have set in ACR, when you do an HDR conversion from RAW?  In other words, does HDR using ACR ignore the output size or not?  If not, then perhaps setting a smaller size in ACR (the same area where you set the bit depth and conversion colorspace) would make things work or setting a larger size with 20D images would make them fail.  This is being suggested as a experiment as well, to try to isolate the issue, not necessarily a permanent solution.
I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with a 50D RAW that would make it not work, but the larger size would use more memory and maybe your machine is getting close to some sort of limit.
Other suggestions would be to reset your preferences and check your disk(s) with scandisk and/or change your scratch-disk to somewhere else to make sure there's no some corruption keeping the HDR process from working with the larger 50D images, and along those lines, also try purging your ACR cache or moving it to another drive.  You might also try changing the amount of memory available to Photoshop (ram vs scratch-disk) in the Preferences.
What module does the crash occur in, if the error says?  Is it related to display or something else?

  • Problem with Canon 50D RAW photos

    Hi,
I got a DVD with pictures in RAW format taken by a Canon 50D and a Canon 30D.
Unfortunately I can neither see the RAW photos from the Canon 50D in preview nor can I import the photos into my iPhoto 08. All updates (including RAW compatibility) are installed on my iMac (Snow Leo). All photos on the same DVD that were taken with the Canon 30D do not cause any problems.
I tried to read the same set of photos with an older Macbook (Tiger) - it works!!! I can read them all.
Anyone an idea? The iMac won't let me re-install the RAW compatibility update as already all updates are installed.
Thanks for your hints and ideas

Hello JobaMUC & welcome to discussions...
nor can I import the photos into my iPhoto 08.
The iMac won't let me re-install the RAW compatibility update as already all updates are installed.
Might be that the update for iPhoto '08 is iPhoto '09...?
As well, if these are recently introduced cameras, they may also bring newer requirements that demand an update from Apple for reliable RAW support - in that case, Apple may be playing catch up, and then the only choice is to wait.
    Good luck in any case.

  • Problem with Canon G12 RAW file

I'm very disappointed because I can't use Lightroom with my new camera! I have this issue since LR 3.3. and CR 6.3 started to support Canon G12's raw file. Any raw file is decoded incorrectly, picture is grained, it has a lot of noise at any ISO (even 80 or 100). The defect is noticeable only at 100% zoom, not at 50% or other sizes.
I tried to do also a clean installation of LR 3.4.1 and CR 6.4.1 but the problem persists. (I use LR 64 bit on Windows 7 64 bit; with PS 12.1 64 bit I have the same problem)
Yes, the camera is ok, and with Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.10 all is perfect, the same picture is amazing.
    Is there any solution please?
    Thank you!
    Davide

It may be that DPP knows how much default noise reduction to apply to your G12's raw images and Lightroom doesn't.
Can you adjust LR's noise reduction sliders to get a better image? If so, you could make that amount of reduction a default.
If that doesn't work for you, could you post a sample raw image somewhere that we could bring it into Lightroom and see what you are writing about?

  • Problem with Canon 6D raw files on LR "4.3"

    Hi
I am having some problems with LR 4.3. This is what happened after I import my 2nd batch of 6D raws to the library (300+ photos). 1st batch of <30 raws were ok. I have yet to do basic troubleshooting but this is something never happened to me with my older cams and older LR versions.

The import operation of LR has a backup to an alternate location function which is normally how you'd recover from this sort of situation--retrieve things from the backup location.  Presumably you don't have backups for anything, though.
I’d try it in another computer, at least, and see if it comes back to life.  The easiest thing to try is recover the photos off your memory cards.  Google for photo-recovery programs.
If a hardware component on the drive, itself, failed, then there’s probably nothing anyone outside the factory can do, and then maybe not, either.  It would involve swapping the data-storage portion of the device to another device with its circuitry intact and seeing if things started working again.  This would only work if the data-storage portion of the device was still ok and the other circuitry had gone bad.
If something on your computer wrote bad-data to the partition table or boot areas, then the files, themselves, may still be there and findable by a low-level recovery program.    Google for hard-drive and partition recovery programs:

  • Problems with Canon 7D RAW files

I am using Elements 8 with Bridge and how downloaded and installed the latest ACR (version 6.2).  I have also purged the cache for all folders on my iMAC, but the CR2 files still show only as blank icons.  Any idea what to do next?

ACR is not expected to generate preview thumbnails in Windows Explorer.
You will not see thumbnails nor be able to preview your .CR2 files on a 64 bit system without the installation of a special codec to do the job.  If you haven't already noticed, you can't even normally see thumbnails for .PSD files either (and this, at least, Adobe really should provide).
I use and recommend the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack, which will enable .CR2 thumbnails as well as (with just this week's release) .PSD thumbnails.  It's inexpensive, and helps integrate your digital photography into your computer environment.  I have no affiliation with this product, other than being a satisfied user.

  • Elements 6, Canon 50D Raw Files, Windows Vista

    Hi all...my first post here...
I'm able to load and see my Raw files in the organizer after loading the latest ACR. But when I browse through the files, after a bit,  I get an error message that Elements needs to close. After closing I check my task manager and notice that the organizer is at 25% CPU usage, so something is hanging things up. I just don't know enough to figure it out. (I'm a little tech savvy, but not a lot...)
I'm on a PC running Vista. Any thoughts would be very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

"Bug Files"? That's a new one for me.
I've successfully imported a Thousand RAW files with thumbnails generated in the organizer.
    I've got 4gigs of RAM.
I left the organizer open for 6 hours today and when I got back home, the RAW files still wanted to freeze, yet I was able to go to some jpg files and work on them before getting the "Elements is not responding and needs to close message". I'm going to go back to check on browsing the RAW files again.
I heard from someone on a DPReview Canon Forum who had the same problem with Elements 6 and the 50D Raw files and it disappeared when he upgraded to Elements 7.

  • Camera Raw 4.4.1 has bug with Canon 40D raw files

I shoot with the Canon 20D, 30D, 40D, 1DMII, and the Rebel XTI. The Raw processor is showing an anomaly only with the 40D files. When I load raw images, and when the image is displayed, it is shown at one setting. Then in 3 seconds, its updated again at about 1/2 stop brighter. Each time I click on another image on the left column, same thing. The new image is displayed, then 3 seconds later, updated at about 1/2 stop brighter. THe histogram reflects the changes showing the data moving to the right. This only happens with the 40D raw files.
    Whats up?
It happens regardless if "Auto" or "Default" is selected. I use "default" as a norm, never letting PS do an auto correction.
How do I stop Camera Raw from doing the second update? This has to stop.

    Thanks John,

  • OS X 10.7 (Lion) iPhoto incompatible with Canon G16 RAW files

Can anyone help me with this issue?  I recently decided to shoot RAW on my Canon cameras EOS 40D & Power Shot G16.  No issues in importing EOS 40D RAW files, but not the same with the G16 RAW files.  After the importing phase is finished I would receive an error message indicating that *.CR2 (G16 RAW) is not supported. I checked the support threads and it shows that G16 should be supported.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in Advance.

Here is the download link for the RAW update:
    Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 5.01
The bad news is that the system requirements state Mountain lion or later is required.

  • Canon 50D RAW files not showing

    Hi all,
I just got a Canon 50D as an addition to the current 400D (Rebel in the USA).
I am shooting 100% RAW files, and I am having a problem with previewing them.
I downloaded and installed the Camera RAW 5.2 fro Adobe and Lightroom and Photoshop have no problems opening the files.
The quick view show only a white (generic) icon, Preview a Question mark, while the RAWs from 400D show without a problem.
I can sort of live with it as I use Lightoom for all viewing and editing, but it is a bit annoying that a quick look with the Quick Look is impossible.
Anyone has /had this issue? Any solutions please?

OK, here's a boy who answers his own questions...
The Apple Camera RAW update 2.4 does NOT list 50D as a new supported camera model, and yet... what do you know... it does include support for Canon 50D.
    Done!
    Hope it helps someone.

As to the Adobe RAW, I thought that it also becomes a "system extension" (for the lack of a better wording) which COULD help, and which obviously doesn't. Thanks for the info.
In regards to the Apple Update, I just assumed that the latest would contain all previous updates, or if it did not, upon install inform that one needs the previous one installed first (Just like Java updates do) - which, again, obviously it doesn't. Again, thanks for the info and the link. I am downloading as I type this, so will see soon - after a restart, so an edit is coming...
Strange thing with the yesterday's RAWs working 100% and today's not at all.
Hopefully the 2.3 will do the trick.
    Stand by.
We have a problem, the 2.3 tells me that it DOES NOT NEED to be installed as a newer version is already installed. This would imply that previous updates are indeed included in 2.4 (just like the security updates - enough to install the latest one.
Well, that's a bit of a problem, innit?
Any way to manually pick the 2.4 off the system?

  • Canon 50D RAW Files and PSE6

I've followed the instructions to add the latest Camera RAW files but still cannot get PSE6 Organizer to recognize the RAW files from my Canon 50D. The editor has no problem recognizing them and allowing edits to take place. Anyone have additional ideas to remedy this?

The issue happens either when downloading from a card or attempting to open the files from the card reader or a folder. I get the message "You are attempting to open a file that is an unrecognizable format or is corrupted." I got similar responses from the Canon software and Irfanview until they were updated with the latest rev that included the 50D.

  • Magenta color cast problem on canon 7d raw files

when i import canon raw files (cr2) into lightroom 3, i get a magenta color cast over the whole image. the thumbnail image looks fine, but when lightroom opens up the image, it get's a magenta color cast over the whole thing. i shot raw+jpeg mode too, and there's a huge differnce in color between the two. the jpeg looks like how i shot it in camera but the raw image has the ugly magenta color. not only do i get this ugly color, but it seems like there's added noise compared to jpeg image.
i tried converting the cr2 into a dng. but when i open that in lightroom, i get the same problem.
i use aperture 2.1 (i only use the lr3 trial so far), but i have the same problem there.
    i use cs3 but i downloaded cs5 trial.
    acr i have is 6.1
    help.
    thanks.

Go to develop and the callibration tab and change it in the pull down menu to a canon default like 'Neutral' and not the adobe one which is made by somebody totally colour blind or obviously a Nikon fan.
Although this is weird as the problem for me has always been canon JPG's with the cast and not the RAW.
Also check your white balance cause Lightroom seems to change it whatever..  'AS SHOT' is a big fat Adobe lie so use a preset from your camera in the drop down box.. Why?  I shoot with Canon's flash WB setting which i know to be 5500k with the tint at zero.  On import, Lightroom changes it to 6150 and adds an amazing +7 on the magenta tint, if i chose 'FLASH' things suddenly turn to what i see on the camera LCD..  I'm sure that is where the big fat tint has come from since day one.

  • Problem with converting GF1 raw files

I recently bought a Panasonic Lumix GF1 and use raw. However, my CS3 and Element 6.0 is not able to read the DNG files that I have created through Adobe DNG Converter. It doesn't seem to matter that I updated the Converter to 6.3. It creates DNG files, but none of my image processing soft ware can deal with them.
I have also used a Canon G11 for almost a year and converted the CR2 raw files without problem.
    Please help me! Anyone!

New problem discovered: My RW2 files of about 11-12 MB are converted to 40-41 MB DNG files. How is this possible?

  • Problems with Quality of Raw file when pulled into Photoshop

I use Photoshop CS3 with ACR plugin version 4.6.0.30 installed.  When I pull my RAW files into it,  I seem to lose a lot of information.  For example I took a picture of my black dog.   I set the camera (Canon 40d) to save the file in both RAW and high res JPG.  When I pull both files directly into photoshop the JPG has more detail information in the highlights and shadows than the RAW file does.  This should be the reverse.  To see if the problem was in the file or in the process of pulling it into photoshop I also pulled it in through Lightroom.  Then I used Zoom Browser (software that came with my camera).  Zoom Browser forced me to convert to a TIFF before importing it to Photoshop.  I'll try attaching a file I made that shows the results of each.
My conclusion is that there is not a problem with the CR2 file, since the CR2 file converted to the TIFF has the most detail, but something is happening when I import it into photoshop.  I just don't know what settings I should be looking at to fix this problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

Camera Raw 101: ACR has different baseline "Defaults" than the Canon software, therefore you will need to make your own adjustments–and perhaps save out a new ACR Default. Canon's software only has to worry about a small sampling of cameras. Camera Raw supports over 230 cameras' raw files. As a result Canon's software tends to match the in camera JPEG and the camera's LCD by default.
Camera Raw on the other hand is more concerned offering a normalized default rendering of the raw data. Rather than trying to force a certain "look" (generally higher in contrast and more saturated) ACR will show the raw data a bit flatter and less saturated.
Fact is, Camera Raw has a huge number of controls for the express purpose of allowing the user to maintain total control over the rendering of the raw data...what you need to do is learn how to use all the sliders....

  • Help with Canon G9 RAW file in CS2

I have CS2, and I recently purchased a Canon G9. I noticed that there is an update for Camera RAW that listed the G9 in it. But the update for CS2 doesn't. Can someone point me to how I can read G9 RAW file in CS2?
    Thanks.

Use the most recent DNG Converter (version 4.3.1 part of the Camera Raw 4.3.1 download) and convert the G9 files to DNG. Course, with this nice new camera, it would be a real shame to be stuck on Camera Raw 3.x cause Camera Raw 4.x (and Photoshop CS3) is a powerful and worthwhile update.

  • Problems with prints from RAW files

I wonder if someone could shed some light on this problem. I uploaded some photos to Kodak through iPhoto, some were JPEG's from my old Canon Powershot and some were RAW files from my new Nikon D40. The images on my monitor from the RAW files from the D40 were great with very vivid colors and I was looking forward to my first prints from the D40. When I received the prints the photos from the old Power shot looked good but the D40 looked terrible. The prints were all washed out and very dull, the strange thing was that there was one photo that was taken with the D40 which was edited and that came out as a good print and seemed to be a JPEG. I guess its something to do with the upload of RAW files, should I be shooting in JPEG ?. I thought that iPhoto uploaded JPEG's
    Thank you in advance

Printed RAW files will always look unsaturated or "dull" until processed and saved as a jpeg or tiff files. Think of RAW/NEF as a means of preserving ALL the available information to later "develop" a final image to be saved as tiff or jpeg for publication. Shooting in Large Fine JPEG mode will yield great results for print and web publishing, and also leave more room on your memory card and computer drive to make more great photos
