CS3: Join long paths comprised of many segments?

Hello!  I understand using the white arrow to select the shared endpoints of individual segments, then Joining them to create one segment. Now, however, I'm faced with an entire urban road network comprised of individual segments which need to be joined.  In FreeHand, you could select all segments in one road and click "Join."  How can I achieve this in CS3?  Thank you!

Thanks; this looks like it should fit the bill.  However, I'm on a PC and it says "For Mac."  Do you happen to know if it has a chance of working with my machine?  Thank you!

  • Joining two paths... driving me crazy!

    Hi,
I'm using Illustrator CS3 and have had to draw a map of the UK to show our companies different sales regions. I have done this by drawing the individual regions (5) and once they are all aligned, they make a perfect UK map.
I now need to join the paths to create just the outline of the UK so I have cut the inner lines which divide up the regions so all I am left with are 5 paths that I need to join. I have selected two end points and pressed {cmd J} and it comes up with the following message:
"To join, you must select two open end points. If they are not on the same path, they cannot be on text paths nor inside graphs, and if both of them are grouped, they must be in the same group."
None of the paths are grouped. They were all drawn using the pen tool.
I have made sure that all ends aren't directional.
Can anyone help? I don't really want to have to re-draw the lines again!!!
    Thanks in advance!

    Rosie,
You might want to read about the Join scripts described on
this page. The .zip contains an AI Javascript that lets you join multiple open paths at once, without having to tediously select the end points. (It also works on directSelected subpaths of Compound Paths.)

  • Problem Joining Two Paths!

Okay so I have Illustrator cs3 and so lets say I want to join 2 paths on a text thing so 2 letters could be joined together and then have the stroke applied to the combined letter, not the separate 2 letters.
I have made some diagrams to explain my situation since it is hard to explain.
(note that the images on top and bottom are the same but I duplicated the top so the bottom is selected just so you can see)
#1: I make the text, I go to object> expand and click okay, then I add a double stroke. Now see how the g is overlapping the n which is overlapping the i which is overlapping the t etc. I want to join the top of the letter s to the letter top left bar of the letter t for design purposes.
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram%201.jpg
#2: I go into outline mode so it is easier to see and work in. Then I moved the points of the s and t together and deleted the 2 vertical bars that were previously there using the scissor tool, now the joints (on the top and bottom) are directly on top of each other.
    http://qualitylogos.net/diagram/diagram%202.jpg
#3: So I use the direct selection tool and highlight both points so i can join them and make one combined letter and I go to object>path>join and I get this error, how do I work this out and fix this because its really frustrating coming from photoshop where it is really easy to do.

Here is the .ai file for illustrator cs3 if you need it:

I hope these files helped you and thanks for checking my thread out, I hope I can get this solved soon :)

    > I want to join 2 paths on a text thing so 2 letters could be joined together and then have the stroke applied to the combined letter, not the separate 2 letters.
You want to create a ligature: Two characters merged into one glyph.
    > I make the text, I go to object> expand and click okay, then I add a double stroke....I want to join the top of the letter s to the letter top left bar of the letter t for design purposes.

Illustrator's Join command is completely lame. It requires you to select endpoints; it can't join more than two paths at a time; and it can't join paths in different groups. (This latter is what is causing the alert you are seeing.)
But you are going at this in too difficult a manner. For what you are trying to do, all that tedious cutting and joining is not necessary.
Set the text. Convert it to paths (Text>Create Outlines). The result is a Group. Apply the Add Pathfinder (and expand if in CS3), or use the Merge Pathfinder. That will union the overlapping characters.
There are also ways to do this with the text remaining live. Essentially, you apply the outlines at the TextFrame, Group or Layer level, instead of at the individual path level. Example:
    1. Set the text.
    2. Black pointer: select the text object (not a text range of characters).
    3. Appearance Palette flyout: Add New Stroke. Drag the stroke to below the Characters listing.
    4. Repeat step 3 for additional strokes.
If you then want everything to flattened to paths, use Expand Appearance, followed by the Add and/or Merge Pathfinders.

  • Join text paths?

Can someone tell me if it's possible and how to join text
    paths.
I mean if i have two letters say E and T, i convert them to paths then
delete a section from the right of the E
and from the left of the T so that they can join up,
then i take the two endpoints of path that i want to join then go to
    object>path>join, i get the message:
"to join, you must select two open endpoints. If they are not on the same path,
they can not be on text paths nor inside graphs, and if both of them are
grouped, they must be in the same group"
i did select 2 open endpoints and i tried ungrouping the text but i still get the same message.
    Any ideas?
    Daniel

    Daniel,
Probably, the upper border of the parts of the two letters to be joined are aligned, and the lower border is not.
Presuming sans serif letter, in many cases you will obtain the cleanest look if you:
    1) Type>Create Outlines,
    2) Ungroup and Object>Compound Path Release,
    3) With the Scissors Tool cut at the far corners of both upper and lower border,
    4) DirectSelect and Join both to rebuild the joining part.

  • CS6 - long path names in 3D material file tabs

When I open the materials files in a 3D file, the tabs at the top of the screen display a long and meaningless path C-_Documents and Settings_Graecyn_My Documents_Photoshop plus the name of the 3d file, plus the name of the materials file.  If I have a few material files, the actual name of the file is obscured. Is there a way to shorten that to just display the name of the material file, or the 3D file plus the material file?  I didn't see it in Preferences. It slows me down to have to go to the Windows menu to figure out which one is which.

The long path issue is not a PowerShell issue, but a 'feature' (some might call it a bug) in Windows. There are two main ways to work around it: make sure you don't create overly long paths and use 8.3 names. Obviously, if your users are not creating deep
paths, you don't have the issue, but I realise persuading users to do sensible things is probably a waste of time in some cases. You could tell the users that files with names that are over long will just get deleted. It might help focus their minds?
One possible workaround, which I've not tested, would be to dynamically create a psdrive with a drive letter that points to somwhere part way down the folder path. For example, if your path is c:\foo\bar\foobar\barfoo\x\y\FileIWantToDealWith.Txt, then create
a new drive pointing to c:\foo\bar\foobar\barfoo\x with a drive letter of X:. then look at x:\y\FileIWantToDealWith.txt.

  • Files with "alien" names in directories with very long path names

    Hi all,
first of all - I dont know if this is the right forum for my Question,
but I could not find any better ;-)
I have a problem with some files with "alien" names with MIXED characters from different foreign countries
(e.g. "Φέτα (τυρί) 只有沙盒或您的用户页可以用作測試ורת המבחנים בחינוך פור.txt").
Sometimes - whenn those files are exists in a directory with a very long path name,
then the windows api fails to handle these files.
For example GetFileAttributesW() returns error 2
and ntQueryDirectoryFile does not return this file in the list (etc. pp.)
I have this behaviour not with other files in those directories (e.g. "abc.txt")
and also not when those names are a little bit shorter
or the directorys name is not too long.
So I guess, there is a bug either in the API or in the file system...?!
I know that such a file name is a generic one,
but I have a situation where I have to handle any file with any name -
even in directories with very long path names...
So please no suggestions like "use shorter paths" or "convert it to a short name"....
thx in advance and Best regards,
    dp.

  • DW CS3 no longer opens files from SourceSafe

Dreamweaver CS3 no longer opens files from Visual SourcesSafe
2005 when you right-click and choose to View with DW, even if DW is
    the registered application.
DW receives the focus, but nothing happens.
This used to function with DW 8. I have tried it on two
machines, both of which were fresh installs, so could not be
conflicting with DW 8 in anyway.
    Is this a known bug?
    Matt

It seems this is a known issue with Dreamweaver. I was able to access the files just fine by deselecting "display external links" in the view menu. Strange that I did not have to do this before.

  • Compiling in long path

    Hi,
I need help in compiling in a long path. I created an IDE my self now I'm on the process of compiling in different locations. One problem that I encountered is that java is having a hard time finding my location.
    Here is my location:

When I try to compile it like:
    C:\Javac\bin\javac -cp C:\Eclipse 3.2\workspace\CubeJ Patch 1\Hello\Hello.java
It gives me the javac option menu which means that I'm not compiling right. I'm planing to parse and replace the long values of the path. I just need help in knowing the right pattern for directories.
I tried traversing to : C:\Eclips~1\ but I cant get to pass Eclipse 3.2, I need to be able to get to the directory without the spaces, can anyone help? thanks.

  • Problem with long path names?

I tried to unpack the PHP eclipse package to a folder named like the ZIP package (pdt-2.0.0GA_debugger-5.2.15.v20081217-all-in-one-win32). WinRAR stopped with an error message (something like "file name to long"). I was unable to delete the folder until I shortened the directory name. Extracting worked only with a short path name.
Did anybody experience something like this?
    Windows 7 x64 - Gigabyte EP-45-DS3 (Intel P45 chip set), 4GB RAM, ATI 4670

I never used the compressed folder option nor I'm sure I really understand what this feature is.I can browse "into" an archive, open it like a folder (is this the "compressed folder" feature?). I extracted the sub folder via drag and drop. The extraction was very slow, but it finished. When I tried to delete the folder, there was an error message stating that the content could not be saved to the trash because of long file names.
I repeated the test and initially created that awful long path which WinRAR was using (pdt-2.0.0GA_debugger-5.2.15.v20081217-all-in-one-win32) and extracted the archives content into that folder. This time extraction stopped with error message "0x80010135: path too long".
All if seen so far seems to indicate that there's a max_path problem with Explorer (only x64 version?) and system parts based on it (like wastebasket), not only a problem with WinRAR.

  • Local Outlook in virtual environment crash when we add long path attachment

We have MS Office 2007 install localy on our Windows 2008 R2 server with App-V SP3 client. We have configured Outlook to start in the Acrobat Reader XI virtual environment for the pdf file preview. When we try to add a long path attachment in Outlook,
    Outlook crash.
If we run Outlook outside the Reader virtual environment, Outlook does not crash. If i try to make a procmon to find a solution, Outlook freeze but does not crash and procmon does not return interresting information. I have try to start Outlook in another
    virtual environment, it still crash.
We have made some more testing. We have discovered that Outlook crash on file path longer than 242 character. Normally, the max path in Windows is 260 character. Thats why we does not  understand why we have this bug.
Any idea someone to solved this problem?

The path of the file we try to add to the mail is something like this :
    G:\Urbanisme\Volet Réglementation\Certificats de conformité\Conformité - Environnement_MDDELCC (LQE)\2015\LQEnv_Carré Belvédère-Gestion Élias_milieux humides_2015-02-27.gaegra\LQenv_projet de développement _ Carré Belvédère_2015-03-23_marjac.docx
I am not sure about the Q drive you talk about... I know than in App-V 4, there was Q drive, but we use App-V 5 SP3 (i forgot to tell in my original post).
    Thanks for your help Rorymon!

  • File Explorer managing long paths incorrectly and inconsistently

File Explorer is not managing long paths correctly or consistently. On both the C: and D: drives I have copied a folder structure that is more than 500 characters (i.e. well exceeds MAX_PATH limit of 260). In the primary drive, the long path always
seems to be navigable. Some additional drives also work properly. Others can only be navigated to MAX_PATH even though the deeper folders exist and can be accessed from other tools. Specifically I can see the fourth folder on the D: drive but clicking that
folder from windows explorer does nothing. Appending "\\?\" to the front of the D: drive does not change the outcome.
Some, but not all additional drives exhibit this behavior. I have a 250G SSD on SATA that, when mounted as a secondary drive, works properly (like the C: drive) and on this drive deep paths can be navigated. I also have a 750G SSD on PCIe that, when mounted
as a secondary drive, works improperly (like the D: drive) and on this drive deep paths cannot be navigated. All of my large (>2TB) drives work improperly.
This bug also exists on Windows 2012 Server, Windows 10 Technology Preview and presumably all previous versions of Windows. I have submitted it as a problem in Windows 10 technology Preview.
