CS3 - Nikon D300s

Since a few days ago I got the new Nikon D300s. Unfortunately I can not open images in CS3, the file format is unknown.
The RAW Converter 4.6
Has anyone an idea? Because the cost of CS4 is for me is not the solution.
Thank you for your help

you can use the DNG Converter to convert your D300s raws to DNG so that you can open them with any version of Camera Raw

  • Some Nikon D300 NEF files don't appear in Bridge CS3 (Mac)

    Hi all,
I'm using a Nikon D300 and just upgraded to CS3 on my MAC in no small part because the D300 was not supported by CS2. I am running into a problem though.
I always shoot in both JPEG and RAW modes. When I open Bridge I always see each JPEG version of a shot.
However, only about 50% of the time can I see the NEF (RAW) version of the thumbnail. The rest of the time I only see a generic "RAW" thumbnail with no image. This sporadic NEF viewability carries over to the preview pane when I select such a NEF file.
Furthermore, Camera Raw cannot open the NEF files that are not visible in Bridge. When I try opening them I get a message saying "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this file type."
I have tried purging the Cache (through Tools) as some indicated in other forums threads but this has not helped. I have also downloaded the ACR 4.4 plugin and installed it in the correct library location.
Has anyone else experienced this (whether on a Nikon or other camera)? Any advice?
    Thanks

I've finally solved the problem with having only some of my NikonD300 NEF files viewable in Bridge/readable by Photoshop! Jon Michael Riley had said he was having similar problems so I wanted to make sure he and anyone else has the info on what worked for me.
The issue does not have anything to do with purging the thumbnail cache or installing the latest version of Camera RAW 4.4.1. While they were good suggestions (offered by Adobe's Technical support people also), they do not resolve this particular issue.
I read that an earlier version of what Jon described as "Nikon's clunky software" had corruption issues when images were first transfered from the camera via Nikon PictureProject Transfer. It looks like the latest incarnation has the same issues. Nikon products can see the transfered images without a problem. HOWEVER, Adobe Bridge/Photoshop cannot rectify the corruption issue caused by transferring photos using Nikon's utility.
So here's the solution: DO NOT use Nikon PictureProject Transfer! It is a piece of garbage! Instead, make ADOBE PHOTO DOWNLOADER the default tool to transfer images from the camera. To make it default do the following:
Open Bridge, pull down the Bridge CS3 Preferences. Select the "General" preferences set. On this screen you will see "Behavior". The first clickable box reads "When a camera is connected launch Adobe Photo Downloader". Select this box to render this the default transfer tool.
If you still have the pictures on your memory cards you can re-transfer them using Adobe Photo Downloader. All your NEF files should now be readable by Bridge/Photoshop. I've told Adobe Tech Support about this problem with Nikon's software. Hopefully they'll be able to check this as an option if others call in with similar problems.
Unfortunately I have not figured out how to repair the corruption in the files I transfered earlier using Nikon's piece of garbage software. Since I don't have the images on memory cards anymore I can't just re-transfer them. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to do this? Will I ever be able to access my earlier NEF shots?
    Cheers,
    Greg
Thanks to everyone for trying to help resolve these issues.

  • Photoshop CS3 and Nikon D300s = BUYER BEWARE

I recently purchased a Nikon D300s and noticed an error message when I try to open RAW files in Photoshop CS3. I checked for an upgrade to the Camera Raw plugin and guess what? The upgrade that includes the D300s is only available for Photoshop CS4.
I called Adobe and they confirmed not only that I have to upgrade Photoshop but that because I purchased the Adobe Creative Suite, I have to upgrade the ENTIRE suite and CANNOT upgrade just Photoshop.
I'm not a programmer but it seems to me that when they upgrade Camera Raw (which they've done several times in CS3) all they do is add support for new cameras. I doubt there is so much programming being done that this pluging update cannot be supported by CS3. It's a complete rip off.

Oh, so the engine from 2010 Prius can be fitted into your 73 pinto without any problems?
    Yeah, it's sorta like that.

  • Unable to see RAW NEF image from Nikon D300 in CS3

Have Camera Raw Plug-in Version 4.0 in my PS CS3 and am not able to see images from my recently purchased used Nikon D300.  I have no problems seeing the NEF images downloaded from my Nikon D80.  I typically download the images from my camera thru Lightroom 2.4.   Do I need a more recent Camera Raw Plug-in?  I want to make sure I'm still compatible with LR.   Any suggestions will be hellpful.

Yes, you are outdated with the RAW plug in and probably not able to use the
correct version that supports your camera.
    You have two options:
1- upgrade to CS4 and benefit from all other good this has to offer
2- If you won't or can't upgrade use the DNG route, DNG is a free offered
(by Adobe) converter. The latest DNG converter will convert your D300 files
to the open DNG format which will show your RAW (then as DNG but still the
same quality) files and you will be able to use it in CS3.
There is lot's of information about in on this page:

  • Mac computer: New Nikon d300s, CS3, and Camera Raw

I just purchased a Nikon d300s. I had a Nikon d50, Mac, iPhoto, CS3, and Camera Raw 4.6.0.30. With Nikon d50,  no problem opening an image from iPhoto into Camera Raw/CS3. With the new D300s, the image opens into CS3 but does not open into Camera Raw. Do I have to buy CS4?

No, you do not have to. You can alternatively use the DNG Converter, which will process your D300S NEF files into DNG files, which can then be opened in CR 4.6 in CS3. The latest version of the DNG Converter, which supports the D300S, is currently in Release Candidate phase and is available here:

  • What is the best raw plug-in for a nikon D300s with cs3

What is the best download raw  plug-in for a Nikon D300s with cs3. I have used 4.6 but still can't open the raw images from my D300s, Used other cameras such as D300 and D200 the raw images where fine.

Use these tables as a guide.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
    D200 - Camera Raw 3.3 - compatible with CS3+
    D300 - Camera Raw 4.3 - compatible with CS3+
    D300s - Camera Raw 5.5 - compatible with CS4+
So you cannot open Raw files from the D300s in CS3.
Your choices are either to upgrade or download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert the Raw files to DNGs then open the DNGs in CS3.

  • How do i view Nef format pictures downloaded  from  Nikon D300 to Ps Cs3

    Hello,
Wonder if any one can help.
Trying to download camera raw format pictures from a Nikon D300 into photoshop CS3. All that can be seen is the icons ( but no picture) . A dialoge box appears with a message saying that 'Ps does not support this type of file' ( ie. Nef) and therefore cannot show it.
Downoading to Photoshop bridge, the same issue appears where the icons are visible ( but no mininature image is shown.
    many thanks

    Robert-
If your PSCS3 version is fully upgraded it should read Nikon D300 files via built-in ACR without difficulty. If not, contact Adobe tech support. DNG... no thank you.
IMO you should also be running under either OS 10.4.11 or 10.5.3.
ACR works fine if one prefers a Photoshop Bridge or Lightroom workflow, but better NEF conversion (and IMO workflow) is available to owners of strong Macs via Apple's Aperture. Best quality NEF conversions come from Nikon View (free) and from Nikon Capture NX, but IMO Nikon's workflow is lethargic.

  • Photoshop CS3 and Nikon D300s

I just bought a new Nikon D300s. If I download the D300 Raw upgrade will I be able to process raw images from my D300s, or will I have to upgrade to CS4?

You need either CS4, which is needed to run Adobe Camera Ready 5.5 – or use the latest Adobe DNG converter (It's free.)

  • Nikon D300 Camera Raw 4.6 Question

    Hello All,
I have Photoshop CS3 and am using a Nikon D300 camera.  I've downloaded and installed the 4.6 version of the Camera Raw plug-in, but it doesn't seem to allow me to open my raw files in 16-bit; i.e., the only option is creating an 8-bit file.  I just installed the DNG converter and took a shot at opening one of the DNG files, but, once again, the plug-in will only create an 8-bit version.  Nikon's Capture NX seems to be the only way I can make my adjustments to my raw file and open the image in Photoshop as a 16-bit file.
Am I missing something here or are Camera Raw 4.6 and Photoshop CS3 limited in their ability to handle Nikon D300 raw files?
Thank you so much for your advice!
    Liz

Please click on the workflow options text link (usually in blue) at the bottom of the CR dialog box. It says 8-bit down there. It will bring up a dialog box. You can then change the output bit depth to 16 bits.

  • Bridge 2.1.1.9 problems with Nikon D300 NEF files

I am getting a few Raw files from my Nikon D300 that will appear properly in Bridge, but the majority either don't show a preview at all or are very pixelated in appearance. The ones that do appear fine can be opened in ACR by right clicking and selecting "open in camera raw". However, the others that don't appear properly don't even show the option to open in camera raw. Yet the files are okay, because I can then open them from within Photoshop and process the files like that. The other odd behavior is that if I right click the thumbnail and rename the file then the thumbnail preview suddenly appears properly. Lastly, the pixel dimensions show incorrectly until the file is renamed.
I am using Windows XP SP2 with Photoshop CS3. Any suggestions would be appreciated. This has been very frustrating because initially it appears that the file may be corrupt.
    Thanks!

This might not be helpful as I do not know why but .. I have a D300, and while Bridge is its usual flakey self, it has worked fine with the file formats. I tried all the combinations of compression and 12/14 bit and bridge sees them.
I do have cache weirdness, where it seems to reprocess them repeatedly, as though it is forgetful, but it does process and resolve them.
I've experimented with the "high quality previews" on and off, and when off the quality is definitely lower. Secondly if it is processing (or reprocessing) its cache, I see weirdness in the display where it may not display the quality preview either for a very long time, or not at all. But generally I've had no luck getting bridge to be usable while it processes its cache for a directory, I just let it finish and then use it.
However none of these flaky issues have been D300 specific, and been using it for a couple months now, and also with a D80 from my wife, no difference.

  • Error opening New Nikon D300 RAW files on Iphoto and Preview

    hi,
I've a new Nikon D300 and I've had problems when i try to import the RAW (.NEF) photos to my iphoto... it says that the file is unreadable either on Iphoto or Preview or even on Apple Aperture. How can i solve this problem? is there any update that i can do for that or Apple didn't upgrade the iPhoto yet? I l know the camera can take 14-bit Raw format photos but i'm not sure if it is taking them in 12-bit because it can take both. I have a Nikon D200 too and i've never had any problem uploading my Raw photos to iphoto. the only program that opens the photos yet is Photoshop CS3.
    hope, someone can help me.
    Many Thanks:
    Gonçalo Rendeiro

hope this 10.5.2 solved the problem

  • CS2 and CR plug-in for Nikon D300 camera

Running Windows XP Pro and CS2. The Nikon D300 nef format is only available with a CR plug in that is incompatible with CS2. Do I have to upgrade to CS3 or CS4 in order to be able to access my D300 images in a card reader? Is there another way? Thanks.

You could try using the free Adobe DNG converter, the Nikon software that came with the camera or one of the many third party raw converters that are available

  • CS2 and Nikon D300 NEF

So, please correct me if I'm wrong but if I understand correctly, those of us that paid good money for CS2 will have to upgrade to CS3 to get support for Nikon D300 camera raw. If true, stuff it and I will switch to NX. Maybe we don't pay enough for PS to expect that support? No wonder people steel Adobe products, there's no respect for honest paying customers.

    > I expect support for what I purchased
And, it's been Adobe's policy to support the current shipping versions of Photoshop and provide free updates. Camera Raw 4 for Photoshop CS3 has already been updated 3 times since its release in May. Since Camera Raw 2 shipped in the Fall of 03 (Camera Raw 1 shipped in Feb 03 as a stand alone product), Adobe's policy has been very clear, they will continue shipping camera compatibility and bug fix upgrades for the duration that the version is supported. Support for non-current versions (any kind of support) ends when a new version ships.
The method that Adobe has chosen for backwards compatibility is to release free updates to DNG Converter that will allow versions even as old as Camera Raw 2.4 to be able to access images shot with cameras not yet released. So, if you choose not to upgrade to CS3 (foolish in my opinion because of the major advances) you'll still be able to convert D300 images to DNG and have access to your images in Camera Raw 3.7. (note, there were 7 free updates to Camera Raw 3 over about a 24 month period)
While you might legitimately complain that Adobe has not done a real good job of communicating their policies, they've not made their Camera Raw upgrade policy a secret.
And, no amount of chatter from new camera buyers is likely to make an impact on their upgrade policy.
Anybody doing this for a living would do well to know what the upgrade and support policies of their software is and smart buyers would do well to buy their upgrades EARLY in the new release cycles as opposed to late so that they could maximize the return on their investment. Let's see, $199 (the base upgrade price) of Photoshop CS3 spread out over 18 months (the average cycles between upgrades) works out to about $11/month or about $.37/day. I would say that's a pretty darn cheap cost of doing business.
And, if Photoshop is too much for your liking, Photoshop Elements also supports Camera Raw 4 in Mac Elements 4.01 and Elements 5 & 6 for Windows. I think Elements sells for $99 (or less) although the functionality of Camera Raw in Elements is limited.

  • Viewing Raw files (.NEF) from Nikon D300 in Preview (OS X 10.4.11)

    Hi,
I can't view Raw (.NEF) files from my new Nikon D300 dSLR in Preview. I can view the ones from my older D70. I put this question on a photography forum, and the problem seems to be with the OS. The D300 and D3 are new and popular cameras. I have no other particular reason to upgrade to 10.5 yet - is there likely to be an upgrade to 10.4, or Preview, or a plug-in or something, that will solve this? (BTW I have no problem opening these files in Lightroom, but I like to use Preview to browse).
    Richard

    Richard,
Did you ever find a way around this? I am in the same boat. I use CS3 and Lightroom to view and edit the D3 raw images but would like to be able to preview them quickly with Preview or Photo Reviewer software which depends on the OS raw converter support.
The newest OS update available on March 20 still doesn't fix the problem. Maybe Apple will offer another update soon??

  • NIkon D300

As every body knows it doesn't work with raw pics. and it is very but VERY MUCH UPSETTING AND DISAPPOINTED. But in the last topic a lot of people talk about this and one of the answer was that one of the Aperture team member got involved in the answers can anybody tell me where to look that answer, because I am keeping sending mails to those guys and nobody have answer me back with at least a sorry word for the inconvenience,so I will like to know from those guys what they think of this and when they think the update will be available to download.
One more thing I heard not sure, but I have a photographer friend that he is using the new CS3 and download the last plug-in and is working fine with his new NIkon D300( which is amazing by the way) and raw pics. so probably that is the way to go now having the delayed with aperture.

Agreed, I have all but given up, I have shot my first wedding of the year on my D300, the couple are away on honeymoon and i have 2 weeks to sort the previews. So i am waiting to see if Apple release the update this week, if not then I am off to pastures greener, Apple's secrecy with Aperture is going to be its ultimate downfall, i think they need to catch up with the times,
No with all that said, i would like to think that a new version is due soon with an updated RAW file system which may mean an easier update path for new camera's.
Either way the comments made a few days ago by a Senior Aperture Engineer were for many too little too late. People were forced to shift software models to stay sharp in business.
It is a great pity that Apple didn't see this coming, and of they did why they chose to keep so quiet.
I think many people would have waited if Apple gave us some idea of what it was up to!
