CS3 problem rendering AVIs

We've been struggling with an odd issue here at my job for several weeks now, and can't seem to find the answer anywhere.
About 6 weeks ago After Effects CS3 (on our Mac) just suddenly stopped rendering AVIs properly. It will actually render the file and it takes about as long as expected (the file size will be about the expected size as well), but when you try to play the rendered AVI, it plays about 6 seconds ( of what should be a 1 to 2 minute AVI) and thats it! The scrubber will travel all the way to the end of the timeline on the player as though the total file is only 6 seconds long even though the file size is appropriate for a much larger file.
The IT guys here have reset the defaults on After Effects, re-installed After Effects, Repaired permissions on the Mac, re-installed the OS X on the Mac and the last thing they tried was re-installing quicktime (because AE uses the Quicktime renderer for so many tasks). Strangely enough, re-installing Quicktime fixed the problem for about 3 renders.
The Mac is our primary render station here and we've had to resort to rendering out Targa sequences, transferring them to a PC and rendering them to AVI format from there. The extra steps are really starting to be a bottle-neck in our pipeline, so if anyone can offer any help with this, I would really appreciate it!
The renders are being exported to an uncompressed AVI (since you can't render to AVI format from the render queue on a Mac) in After Effects CS3.
The specs on our Mac are: Power Mac running OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger), dual 3Ghz Intel Xeon processors, and 4GB RAM.
Thanks in advance, for any help.

Thank you to Dave LaRonde over at Creative Cow. He had
Two suggestions (one of which did the trick-not sure which one
) here are his suggestions:
Somebody discovered Open GL, which shouldn't ber used for rendering in AE... so turn it off.
Somebody discovered that you can use multiprocessing in AE... but since you need a whole bunch of RAM, and 4GB isn't much at all, you should turn that off, too.
Thanks again Dave!

  • My mac Mini has problem rendering images and video

    THE PROBLEM:
My mac mini has problem rendering JPEG image. There are strips on the images. Other images such as GIF, PNG, TIFF, and BMP are displayed nicely.
The images shown in the links below illustrate the problem:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/terencewong/71481156/
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/terencewong/73360989/
(Please note that this image is grabbed from my faulty Mac Mini and saved into TIFF. For uploading purpose, I converted it into JPEG on ANOTHER computer.)
For movies, AVI can be playback without problem. But when it is converted to MPEG, it looks like an untunned TV channel.
    FIXES TRIED:
I did erase and install 3 to 4 times using both the install disc and my Tiger Family Pack. All ended up with strips on the JPEG images and the generated MPEG movies.
I've also tried to flash the firmware to 113-xxxxx-124 using ATI's october 2005 universal ROM update, however, the ROM Revision shown in System Profiler is still 113-xxxxx-116 no matter how many time I reboot the system.
    INVESTIGATION:
Yesterday, I did some research and got to know that JPEG and MPEG are using DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) for decompression. And the ATI Radeon 9200 chip provide such a transform on hardware basis, which free the CPU from doing something else. Feel free to point out my inaccuracy.
    HARDWARE SPECIFICATION:
I bought the Mac Mini in the last Februray.
The system Boot ROM version is: 4.8.9f1
Display card is ATI Radeon 9200
    Chipset Model: ATY,RV280
    Revision ID: 0x0001
    ROM Revision: 113-xxxxx-116
    A POSSIBLE CONCLUSION:
I suspect that it is this part of the chip (the DCT) that is faulty.
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
    Many thanks!

Assuming that your display is tightly connected, thus the problem is not caused by something as simple as that, the fact that a full erase and install has not removed the problem would, I think, point to this being a hardware issue, and given that everyone's mini (with the possible exception of some of the latest ones) has the same video chipset as yours, and do not suffer the problem that you appear to, it seems very likely that your mini has a fault which is in need of repair.
If you have an Apple Store nearby, I would take it there to have it checked out - at the very least they should be able to replicate your problem using an in-store display, and if not, thusly suggest it's something external to the mini and concerning your display or something very unusual in the immediate environment of the mini. If you don't have an Apple Store in reach, I'd take the system to an Apple authorized service provider since at the present time it is under warranty.

  • Mac Pro has problems rendering and RAM previewing in Adobe AE

I've been using Adobe After Effects 7 and I have a 3g new Mac Pro. It's a great computer, really fast with Final Cut Studio Universal, etc. and when rendering sequences in FCP the program doesn't quit. BUT, when I'm trying to RAM preview or render a composition in Adobe After Effects the application will quit unexpectedly everytime. I found that it would only quit when the composition was over approx. 30seconds, but I've used an eMac that never had problems rendering much longer clips. The fact that the program quits after a certain amount of time makes me think it is an issue with RAM availability to the program, as in a conflict with the program, and the new intel-based Mac Pro. I've asked around on the Adobe website but there is no specific solution. Has anyone heard talk that the intel-based Macs or new OSX, are conflicting with Adobe applications, etc?

Mostly correct, Jim. Photoshop CS3 (UB) Beta is available for download and a time-limited license to CS2 license-holders. The time-limit is unspecified, but Adobe says it will end when CS3 is released.
All good reports the last time I checked on various fora.
(CS3 install does not overwrite CS2, so in case Adobe releases CS3 and pulls the plug on those time-limited CS3 Beta licenses, you'll still have CS2 to limp along with until you receive 3.)
CS2 seems to work fine on an Intel Mac, though slower because it's running in Rosetta. Heck, I'm using CS without difficulty, other than the slowness.
However, all that doesn't help the OP with AE, which isn't scheduled for a UB release until mid-2007, IIRC.

  • Speed/Duration with Field Rendered AVI

I have field rendered AVI movies with audio. When I change the speed of the clips and then export to MPEG2, put the file on a DVD, the fields are messed up in the faster part. Is there a way to speed up clips that have fields? I understand that some quality will be lost, but I just don't want it to shake.
    Thanks

thanks, turning Frame Blend Off fixed the problem.
BTW, I mentioned that it was field rendered because I work with animation and we can render with or without fields.

    Svanur,
I agree with Harm. The specs. do not match up correctly. Where did those AVI files come from?
I assume that you are working in PAL-land (and not NTSC-land). Is that correct?
What platform are you working on, Mac, or PC?
When you attempt to Import those AVI files, what is the exact error message that you are getting?

    Hello everyone:
OK now I'm having problems rendering. I have about 6m:22sec of video that I need to render. But I get this Render Error:

Fine. But where are the Render files being written to and how much space is on that drive?
Look at your Scratch Disks setting to find out.

  • Problem Converting AVI (DV) to MOV (DV)

I have a number of AVI (DV) files that were previously imported on my PC, which I want to covert (using my Mac) to the more Mac friendly MOV (DV) file format.
I read that the best way to achieve this is to open the AVI files in Quicktime Pro and to convert the files to MOV using “SAVE AS”, as opposed to “EXPORT”. I understand that the benefit of using “SAVE AS” is that there is no recompression of the DV stream and that only the Container is changed (which results in a lossless conversion).
The problem is that the new MOV (DV) file is significantly larger than the original AVI (DV) file. For example, the size of a 13.5 minute clip increases from 2.95 GB to 5.88 GB.
I wouldn't expect such a significant change in file size if only the Container is indeed being changed.
I have also tried MPEG Streamclip to do the conversion, but I get the following message when I try to open the AVI (DV) file “File open error: this movie file is not supported”.
I have confirmed using Gspot that the AVI (DV) file is a 'Type 1' as opposed to a 'Type 2' file. Gspot also indicates the following information about the file “Multipart OpenDML AVL (3 parts). I don’t know if this is relevant.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    UPDATE PROBLEM SOLVED:
I was able to fix this problem by following a reply that I received on forum.videohelp.com. Basically, I was able to fix the problem by using a program called DVdate to convert my AVI (DV) files from Type 1 to Type 2. Now all is well. Here is the link below to the answer.

  • Time Code Effect  Source Monitor and rendered .AVI movie display different timings???

Im seeing a strange error and hope someone might be able to help me out. I am shooting elementary classroom reading lessons for a study by the University of Michigans School of Education. It is important to the study to see what takes place over about a 2hour period of time.
Im shooting with 2 cameras. 1 on the teacher the other on the students. Im shooting on mini DV. The first camera I start about 4min ahead of the second so that when the 1hour tape is filled I can switch the tape in camera 1 while still capturing activity on camera 2.
When I edit the footage I am cutting back and forth between the 2 cameras. One initial shot is of the classroom clock as it ticks from one minute to the next. I later use this footage as a guide when establishing the Time of Day.
When the entire lesson is edited together and cut. I add two transparent video tracks each with the Timecode effect added. The first I synchronize with the classroom clocksetting the Timecode Source to Generate matching the Starting Timecode with the clock footage. I then crop the frames portion so viewers will know the time of day the footage was shot. The other I leave the Timecode Source set as Clip. I use the size and position controls to move the two timers into the upper left of the screen.
When I view the finished video in the Program Monitor everything looks great. When I Export|Movie to an .AVI file the video looks correct but the timers are off. The last frame of the video in the Source Monitor displays 11:28:19 for the clock timer and 02;02;00;23 for the total time timer. But when I view the .AVI the last frame displays 11;03;40 for the clock and 01;37;36;25 for the total time.
So how did I lose 24min between the Source Monitor displays and the rendered .AVI displays?

Yes. After I had the .AVI I ran through the two side-by-side (.avi and the Source Monitor). I have since experimented with some of the Time Code effect settings trying to see if these might have some impact. I have not been able to find any detailed explanation of what each setting controls/does other than an overview (see link below).
I suspect that this has something to do with the size/length of the clip 2+ hours. Is there an optimal length for an individual clip? Should I be splitting this into 2 or 3 shorter sequences and then putting them on a DVD with Encore and setting it up to play them back-to-back?

  • Problems using AVI read/write example

I would like to test some vision processing software I wrote by reading an AVI file rather than a live stream. I found the "AVI read/write example" mentioned on this forum and it sounds like exactly what i need, but I cannot get it to read my avi files. When I run the example read VI, it says "An exception occured with the external code called by a call library node". Doing further testing, I found one AVI on my computer that would work, all others crash the VI. Another odd behavior is that the "avi init read" subvi will return the wrong frame rate for some AVIs. I have tried both compressed and uncompressed AVIs all in RGB format. I have also tried different frame rates and encoding options for my AVI file with no luck. I am just a stud
ent, so buying software is not an option for me.
Has anyone had problems reading AVIs with this? Are there AVI encoding options that will make this VI work?

    Hello,
I think the avi functions that you get are VFW based, it can not read
any format of compression codec. But it should be able to read
uncompressed AVI files. But anyway, if you can't get IMAQ-vision 7.0
avi functions to try (I don't have, I don't know how it works), you
can always get my IVision to try out. In IVision, there are two groups
of avi functions. One is called "AVI functions", they are VFW based,
so not always work for all kind compressed avi files, but I have
another group called "Media files", the functions there work for all
format compressed AVI files, including mpeg, asf, avi... you can
access the frame image by using a callback vi (example included), seek
the media position, change play rate, etc.
Go to get a download at:

  • Problem downloading avi files

    Hi,
I have recently had problems downloading avi files from rapidshare.de, because the avi files do not download to my desktop (a new ticket system prevents me from manually clicking on the link, and instead begins downloading the files automatically), but open and play in my browser (Internet Explorer 5.2). I cannot save these files to my computer or open them in my QuickTime application. Can I get some help as to how I can configure my browser to download avi files to my desktop, instead of opening them in the browser

    Hi erikson1,
If the link is a direct liink to the avi file, you can just hold the 'control' key - click and hold the mouse over the link and then select "Download linked file to disk."
If the link is to a html or other similiar web page that will play the file in it then it gets a little more complicated to get that avi file. Then you may have to view source of that page and find the direct link to the avi file for download.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 - exporting uncompressed AVI renderes black vid - help

I'm putting together a small demo reel (just under 6 minutes) where the image quality is important above all things.  I was trying to export an Uncompressed AVI movie, 1920x1080 with 16bit 48Hz audio in Pro CS3 (I don't have access to a later version), which seems to work except the video is being rendered black (the final file is 32 gigs).  I tried testing this with a 5 second clip to see if the length or size of the file was causing the problem but it was the same.  The reason I am doing this is that I want to do my codec and burn to DVD in another program (AVS) and need to export the video as pristine as possible,  It didn't seem to make a difference if I chose "uncompressed AVI" or the "Microsoft AVI" and then made sure the video setting were set to uncompressed.  I am sure that the video is alright as I was able to create a "Microsoft AVI" as long as I chose some sort of video compression but then that file is being doubly compressed.
I had heard mention that Premiere Pro (I am new to this package) should be able to export an uncompressed QT file as well but this option seems unavailable to me in the export options.
I tried using the Premiere Encoder to go straight to DVD from Premiere (this is not for Blue Ray by the way - I just wanted to master at HD so taht, in the future, when I do re-edit for Blue Ray I'll already have this material worked out for that resolution) but it generates a single Mpeg2 files that my DVD burner doesn't want to use (it seems to want things to be in the VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS directory structure).
Sorry for this layman stuff but any help is much appreciated.
    -Michael

    Thanks Jim,
I tried None but the images (video) still comes up black.  I've tried
looking at the final AVI through Premiere itself and also AVS Media
Player, Editor and a few other programs.  The uncompressed audio is
there but the video is rendered black (uncompressed black so the files
are still huge).  All I have to do is change the codec to Cinepak or
one of the others that are available and suddenly the images are there
as expected but, unfortunately, the image degradation once this file
has been converted to High Quality DVD is not acceptable for my
    purposes.
I'm not sure what other alternatives there are  -- is there a way to
load additional codecs into Premiere (such as QT uncompressed) so that
I can give those a shot?
Thanks for your help on this.

  • External disk problem with AVI files

    Hi
I do have Premiere elements 7 installed on a Sony Vaio laptop with Vista.
I have just rendered (DV camera to AVI files) some 20 tapes to my external disk (usb and fire wire connection) and everyuthing worked perfect.
A week later Premiere complains that I have not the correct codec installed.
However AVI files stored on my laptop still works.
Someone that has a clue about this?
    Second problem.
When renering the DV camera to AVI files directly to the laptop the dates works fine.
When i copy them to an external disk, the dates are replaced with todays date and I can not anymore see the shooting date.

    Hi,
Thanks, the forum seems to be a good knowledgebase. And thanks for your fast reply.
The thing is that I have a external disk with firewire and USB input.
However the laptop has only one firewire connection, so when rendering I use the laptop firewire for my Sony DCR-TRV33E and connects the external disk with USB.
When I create my videos, I connect the external disk with firewire.
However the problem is the same even if I try with USB or Firewire.
BUT last week it worked with both?????

  • Problem with Avi-import (lots of information added)

    Hello Adobe-forum-community,
    short story about me:
Im kinda new to the whole video-editing-world. I started out some months ago with Vegas Movie studio and fell in love with creating my own videos somehow (especially game-montages atm). Recently I realized that my lowbudget-movie-studio lacks some features I would like to add to my montages (masking, 3D-techniques, ...). I looked around on the web and realized that I could get the whole Adobe package for an amount of money that I could afford (student-pack).
So I decided to try out the Premiere-Pro-CS5-trial, before I actually buy the production-premium-student-pack with Premiere CS5, AfterEffects CS5, etc.
    Now my problem:
I cant get my avi-files to work in Premiere.
Before the flaming starts, I have to say that I already informed myself about this issue in this forum and things like "avi is just a container, doesnt tell anything,..." (thanks to Bill´s article) arent new to me by now.
I will now try to give you as much information about the "avi"-file as I can, to make it easier for you to help me:
As I said earlier, I do game-montages atm. So I usually start out with recording some gameplay with a programm called "PlayClaw" (fraps-alternative; works much better imo). I record at fullscreen with 60 fps and something called "light-compression" (its neccesary, cause otherwise I would get 7,5 GB data each minute; it also gives the best preformance while gaming).
After that I usually look through my clips with Virtualdub, just to get rid off useless footage. All I do with Virtualdub is selecting the "good" parts of the gameplay and save it once again as avi with the option "direct stream copy" for audio and video, so that the format and the quality stays the same. After that I can delete the big files to get back some space on my harddisk.
I also used Gspot, to get some more informations about the clip(s) I want to import into PremierePro:
Another thing that might be interesting for you, is the fact that I did a complete fresh install of Windows7-64bit on my PC just some hours ago. The only thing I installed along with PremierePro by now are:
    - sounddriver
    - graphics-card-driver (ATI HD 5850)
    - firefox
    - vlc player
    - PlayClaw (the recording programm)
    - Virtualdub (well, it doesnt need to get installed)
So no additional driver packs and stuff at the moment.
I also made a screenshot of my sequence-settings in PremierePro (I really dont know if I am right with those; probably not :P):
I hope this is enough information for now and maybe someone can help me.

Alright, I am done with testing and solved my problem.
Now I will post here again, just to show a way that helped me to get the PlayClaw-Raw-Clips into PremierePro:
You need a 32-bit-version of VirtualDub (cause there´s no 64-bit-TAMB-codec out now) and need to install a 32-and-64-bit-version of the Ut-Video-Codec (works really good; 32-bit for VirtualDub and 64-bit for PremierePro).
Then resize the clip to 1280x720 (use the filter called "resize"), set in the video-tab to full-processing-mode and choose the Ut-Video-Codec under compression with the following settings:
If you also want the recorded audio, then go to the audio-tab and simply set to "Direct stream copy". Otherwise set to "No audio".
After these steps, Gspot should give you something like that about your clip:
Now the clip got converted to something that PremierePro can use.
My Sequence-settings in PremierePro look like this:
If you havent recorded at 60 fps, then change the timebase-setting to fit your original footage.
About FRAPS (also tested it; just wanted to know if it works the same):
With FRAPS its actually a bit easier, because FRAPS somes with a 64-bit-codec. That means that you can start right away with a 64-bit-VirtualDub-version and dont need to install a 32-bit-UT-video-codec-version. But thats the only difference, everything else works the same.
    On a note:
This is neither the only way to do it, nor the right way for every material that PlayClaw/FRAPS can give you.
BUT this is a way that works:
    - plays back in PremierePro like a charm
    - Ut-video-codec saves the quality from the raw files pretty well
I even did a testedit and rendered it with the H.264-format and the HDTV-720p-29.97-High-Quality-preset, just to see how it looks in the end, and I have to say that it´s REALLY good quality-wise for this kind of footage in my opinion so far (after all the final game-montages I have seen the last months).
And because there hasnt been a good work around for this PlayClaw/FRAPS-Raw-files (atleast I couldnt find one as I had the problem), I thought its worth to write it down for some other new PremierePro users.
Now I can concentrate on learning the workflow and some new techniques.^^
    Also:
Thanks to all in this thread. Your suggestions and hints got me on the right way to come up with a solution.

  • Dreamweaver CS3 problem with small fonts

    Hello,
I am having a problem with text appearing
REALLY SMALL and unreadable in CS3, when it looked fine in
Dw8. It also looks fine in in all browsers.
I talked to Adobe tech support, and they said something about
my CSS file not being correct. I looked at it, and nothing seems
    out of the ordinary.
If it was a problem with my CSS file, wouldn't it look bad in
    the browser as well?
    Any suggestions?
    Ron

    Ron,
Thanks for the sample file. This is a bit complicated, so
    please bear
    with me.
Up until DW8, DW rendering always targeted the most popular
    browser at
that time. For DW8, that was IE6. Traditionally, the most
    popular
browser was the most popular because it was the best browser,
    but that
no longer holds true. So, DW CS3 now targets CSS 2.1. Note
    that DW does
not support all of the CSS 2.1 spec, but what it does support
    follows
    the spec.
Your page does not have a DOCTYPE, so it renders in "quirks"
    mode in the
browsers that I tested it in on WinXP (FF2, IE7, Opera9). DW
    renders
this page in IE6 quirks mode, but DW CS3 no longer supports
    quirks mode.
Put a DOCTYPE such as the following in your page to see what
    I mean:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01
    Transitional//EN"
    http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
The reason that the font is so small is because of the
    font-size
    property in this rule:
    TD {
    FONT-SIZE: 80%;
Your page has tables nested 4 levels deep, so the 80% is
    compounded at
each level. I fixed this in DW CS3 by creating a style sheet
    with this rule:
    TD { FONT-SIZE: 100% !important; }
and the applied it as a Design-time Style Sheet, although you
    may be
able to remove the 80% altogether.
    Hope this helps,
    Randy
