CS3 Question

I'm sorry, I know this is the CS6 forum but I couldn't find one for CS3. I'm a newb to the forums.
I have the full CS Suite 3 and my issue is with the Photoshop aspect. It has worked for me beautifully for many years and, unfortunately, has come into a problem recently. When I select a color using the eyedropper tool (sample size 3 by 3 Average) it selects the color. Then, upon attempting to paint that color, it uses a color that is washed out by comparison. It selects the right color but the paint brush (I'm using the standard, 27 pixel soft brush, normal mode, 100% opacity, 100% flow) will not paint that color. It looks like it's adding more white to it or adding a muddled grey color. I'm not amused with this at all.
I'm not certain whether it is my having accidentially hit something as to make this happen or if it is the program glitching. I uninstalled and reinstalled and, unfortunately, am still finding the problem. I will try uninstalling and reinstalling again (this time deleting all the preferences) to see if that may fix it. It does this with multiple images (all .psd files, multiple layers) so I know that it's not the single file being corrupt. I really hope someone can help me because I'm about ready to throw my CPU in the trash and set it on fire.

Sound files totalling 41,000 kb (40 meg).

Question: when rendering on timeline does it use these settings in the preferences or is this just for exporting ?
If rendering on the timeline uses these settings then I should be using the DivX 6.8.5 codec , correct ?

So I have two problems...
1) current rendering from timeline makes video result look like it is losing a frame here and there....not drastically horrible, but not good either.
2) artefacts, although not as bad as they were with phsX enabled, are still happening a little bit....I would rather not roll back the driver if I can make manual adjustments to some of the nVidia settings instead. Like, whether the application controls certain aspects or I ask the hardware to handle those actions (basically I think these choices are for 3d gaming and what control the applications have for the settings).

In this case, can you go back to before the DivX encoding? That would be far better than even a good conversion. Once an AV file has been heavily compressed, the quality is gone and gone for good. You can do nothing to ever get it back. Then, if you edit, and Export to any compressed format/CODEC, you loose more quality. No way around that.
With conversion, DivX material can be easily edited, so long as one converts to a non-GOP format, that PrPRo likes, say that DV-AVI Type II. Still, the quality is lost, so going back to a point prior to the DivX compression will benefit you.
A good analogy of DivX quality would be: you have a DOC file, and print it out on your 1200 dpi printer onto good stock. Looks great. This is the original DV-AVI Type II footage from Capture. Now, you FAX this to a friend (this would be something like doing a DVD-Video in MPEG-2 CODEC). Your friend then writes some notes on the FAX, makes a copy of it on the copier machine, and then FAX'es this back to you. The resultant FAX on your end would be the DivX compression. Even with a good OCR program, you will have difficulty getting this back to a form that looks good in digital form. Does this quality loss analogy make sense?
Good luck, and please do not try to edit DivX, or you WILL go crazy. You will never get good, or clean edits. Save DivX only for Export as a highly-compressed delivery format for streaming data.

Installing CS3 Questions

I'm just getting around to installing CS3 and have a few questions.
Can I copy the disk to my hard drive and install from the hard drive?
I know Windows Service Pack 2 is needed in order to run CS3, but is it needed to install the program?

While trying to install the program I encountered a pop-up box with the following message:
b Setup has encountered an error and cannot continue.
b Contact Adobe Customer Support for assistance.
b The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur
b if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows installer
b is not correctly installed.
So, anybody know what's going on?

1. Yes, you can the disk to the hard drive and install from there. Some folks have even found it necessary to I believe. I do it all the time just for sake of convenience and faster installs.
2. Is WinXP/SP2 needed to install CS3? I'm not sure, but since it is is needed for CS3, I'd sure install SP2 first, particularly knowing that the installation of CS3 has been troublesome for several folks. In my experience, I've seen more problems caused by installing a service pack after an application is installed, than by doing the service pack first. SP3 is also out I believe, but I don't know it's history for causing new problems, so whether to go fully current with SP3 is more of a choice than a need.
3. I'm not sure about the Windows Installer issue, but that may well be SP2 related, since the Windows Installer does get updated periodically. Again, I suggest you first install SP2 then return to installing CS3 to see if the problem is resolved.

Quark to InDesign CS3 Question

I have a Quark 6.5 file for Mac and need to be able to open in InDesign CS3 (PC). I do not have the plug-in and have no need to purchase it as this is the only file I have. Would it work to save the Quark file down to version 4 and then open in InDesign that way?
Any suggestions?

Yes it would, except that Quark 6 will save down only to Quark 5. So you
would need to then open it in Quark 5 and save down to Quark 4.

Dreamweaver CS3 Question

I just upgraded from DW MX 2004 to DW CS3. Now I seem to have
lost the ability to select Insert - Layout Objects - Layers. It
seems that CS3 has removed Layers. Would someone please advise me
where DW has put layers? I have looked at all the tabs several
times without any luck.

There's no such thing as "Layers" on the web and that was
confusing people
in DW.
Look for the AP Elements panel in DW (F2 or Window > AP

Same functionality as "Layers" in earlier versions just a

Photoshop CS3 question

I have Photoshop CS3 on my laptop and for some reason I CAN'T open bridge but I am able to open Photoshop. Do you know why this is happening?

What specific information would you need? The program was working just fine early yesterday morning and than when I came back in the afternoon to edit some more pictures that is when I wasn't able to see the full image anymore. It is providing me with all of the editing options as if the picture is there but it is just a blank screen with the thumbnail pic showing in the right panel.

Encore DVD 2.0 and Vista?,.....and Encore CS3 questions

Encore dvd 2.0....are you guys going to continue to support this and make a patch for it to run under Vista? if so where can I find it? Kind of bad to buy a product and the company drops support on it immediately after purchase and it won't run on the operating system....
Also is/will there be and upgrade to encore dvd 2.0?
I know that you have Encore cs3, is that the upgrade to encore 2.0? and will you be selling Encore CS3, separate from Premiere? I need nothing in Premiere and want the Encore dvd and for it to run with Vista. Please have an option to buy just the Encore CS3 without having to buy premiere and stuff that I don't need because if that is the case then I will not be buying Adobe products anymore. I won't be forced to purchase extra software I have no need for in order to get the one program that I want...it is not worth it..easier to change to a different company for that product...just asking...and if you care about your customers, you might at least listen and consider what I have requested..thanks..t

Newbie CS3 Question: Illustrator crashes on Save or Save As...

I'm really stuck here. Illustrator CS3 crashes whenever I try to do a Save or Save As... I've contacted Adobe support and gone through a clean startup and reinstall of the app and still no love. Furthermore, the updater for CS3 fails. Something really troubling going on here...anyone ever reported this type of an issue before?

Insert Flash with Dreamweaver CS3 Question

So I have been building websites for awhile and have always relied on the built in insert flash object that came with dreamweaver as I have never had issues with it.
However as I finished a site recently the client had a friend look at it and brought up the red flag that the site was not w3 compliant. So I go and look at the little tool they have and the only error that comes up is related to the insertion of flash on the page.
I googled it a bit and found a number of people saying that the insert flash through dreamweaver will no show up as compliant. A couple solutions to fix the problem.
But before I go down that road, I want to ask. ...Does it really matter here? Seems like Dreamweaver insertion would be compliant? I mean come on the link that the w3 give to fix the problem is a link from a fix created in 2002.
I have never heard of anyone saying no the flash does not show up so right off I am not terribly concerned but it would be nice to know..
Also if it is important and suggestions as to a nice fix to the issue would be great.

Right you are!
I tend to spot check pages and haven't done a W3C check on a flash embed in my websites (apparently). Just did one pursuant to your question. The page is 100% compliant without the Flash video. has 51 errors, 35 warnings with it. Lots of those errors are Adobe-generated Javascript that handles the flash video insert, skins it and so on.
Here is where Adobe may not be compliant with the W3C.

Flash CS3 question...

I'm trying to get up to speed with Flash CS3, having been
through a number of training tutorials etc. I've been working on a
website tutorial, and I noticed something that's driving me nuts...
When I go into editing a symbol which has a couple layers with a
timeline, I've been able to preview the background page from the
site while working on the layers and effects in that symbol... Now
for some reason when I dbl. click the symbol, I can't see the
background page??? Was I imagining this, or is there some setting
that allows you to see a page that a symbol is located/placed on...
I'm using this on a Mac, which I've noticed the commands are
different from the PC version on some things? Help!

itself. If you double-click it on the stage, then you will

CS3 Questions, Help please?

I've been gone for a while and I used to know this stuff backwards and forwards. Now that I have come back, I just can't seem to remember some things re. InDesign and shortcuts and keys. I've tried going to help but these don't come up in help and I did not get a book with CS3. I set my shortcut prefs to shortcuts for Quark 4 as in past.
1. Is there a way to get the display preference to default to high quality display so it is there all the time?
2. Where is the default for copy and then the paste going in front instead of pasting in back.
3. I can use my shift/command/> to increase font size (and where is the preference for changing it by 1 point instead of 2 please) but the shift/command/< is not working at all.
4. I have some documents that when I try to increase the leading by 1 point, the leading is increasing drastically almost as if there is a lock to some grid on but all the lock to grids and lock to baseline are not selected. I don't know who created these documents but I cannot find where they appear to be locked to grids. Any ideas.

Ann, I responded to your other query too, but are you sure you don't have "Paste Remembers Layers" turned on? If stuff you copy is on a layer that is behind something else, it will still be behind it after pasting because it will paste to the layer behind.
Check your Layers flyout menu to see if this is the case.

Questions before I SWITCH to Mac...

Few questions before I switch to Mac (hoepfully when Leopard comes out)....
Currently I have a Dell XPS Media Center PC and a Vista laptop.
1. TV/DVR CAPABILITIES: I love using my PC as a tv tuner & DVR. Does mac have this capability? If I run Vista on the Mac will my Media Center, TV tuner, etc... run the same?
2. PDA SYNC: Will the Mac sync calendar & contat items with my Windows based PDA?
3. WEB DEVELOPMENT: I am a ASP.NET developer. Can I do this on a mac easily? If I have to use Windows on the mac to do this, can anyone speak on the performace?
4. SHARING FILES BETWEEN OS & COMPUTERS: Can I share files with other XP or Vista pcs I have in the house? Can I share files between the Mac and Vista OS on the SAME machine?
5. DUAL MONITORS: Does the MacBook Pro or iMac support DUAL monitors?
6. CS3 QUESTIONS: I'm thinking about purchasing Photoshop CS3, Flash CS3, etc... Can I install them onto the Mac side and the Vista side of the same machine?

Drawing AP Divs..In Dreamweaver CS3..

Ive been trying to draw ap divs on my website and i've been having trouble.
My main issue is when i draw the ap div it disappears after i take my finger off the mouse.
there is no box nor selection handle left in my window.
I've tried going through the preferences and viewing options, but nothing works.

Thank you. You cannot draw a/p divs in Layout mode. You shouldn't even be in Layout mode anyhow.
In my opinion, there are three serious problems with Layout Mode -
1. Perhaps most importantly, it sits between you and *real* HTML tables,
and fools you into believing that concepts like "layout cell" and
"autostretch" really mean something. They do not. As long as you use
Layout Mode, you'll never learn one of the most important things for new web
developers - how to build solid and reliable tables.
2. Actually, #1 wouldn't be *so* bad, except that the code that is written
by Layout Mode is really poor code. For example, a layout table contains
MANY empty rows of cells. This can contribute to a table's instability.
In addition, if your initial positioning of the table's cells is a bit complex,
Layout Mode will throw in col- and rowspans aplenty as it merges and splits
cells willy-nillly to achieve the pixel-perfect layout you have specified. Again,
this is an extremely poor method for building stable tables, because it allows
changes in one tiny cell's shape (i.e, dimensions) to ripple through the rest
of the table, usually with unexpected and sometimes disastrous consequences.
This is one of the primary reasons for the final result's fragility - read this -

3. The UI for Layout Mode is beyond confusing - many options that you might
want to use are inaccessible, e.g., inserting another table, or layer onto the page.
I can understand the new user's desire to use this tool to make their life easier,
but the cost is just too heavy in my opinion. Adobe agrees. Layout mode is gone forever beginning with CS4.
To make good tables, keep it simple. Put a table on the page, and begin to
load your content. If you would want a different table layout, instead of
merging or splitting cells, consider stacking tables or nesting simple
tables instead, respectively.
And above all, do not try to build the whole page with a single table!
