CS3 randomly indexing mpeg2

Hello,
Time being of the essence, we mostly work with native mpeg2 files.
We are using 2 workstations:
- 1 running PPro2 mainly for editing
- 1 running CS3 mainly for rendering
This system has been working like a charm until we changed the PC running CS3 from a Quad Core 3GB XP 32 bit to an Eight Core 12GB Windows 7 64 bit.
Now the files are slowly indexing in CS3. The worst part is that it seems to be random! Sometime a project will migrate without indexing, and sometime it will slowly index the files.
We tried CS4 and CS5, but those are not options, CS4 is too slow, and projects don't transfer well to CS5.
Any idea?
Thanks,
Jerome

Thanks Hunt. Actually the mapped drive solution has worked pretty well so far with our Adobe products.
I found on forums that there could be an issue with Windows 7 disconnecting mapped drives and not reconnecting properly. I changed the autodisconnect setting in the registry and it seems better, not perfect though.
Now there is something I don't get. We are running CS3 on 2 machines:
- XP Pro 32bit Quad Core 3GB
- Windows 7 64bit Eight Core 12GB
The indexing of MPEG2 is fast on the XP machine and very slow on the Windows 7. Conforming is fast on both.
Any suggestion?
Thanks,
Jerome

• PS CS3 random errors with Lightroom folder when making contact sheets

When I make contact sheets in Photoshop CS3 of photo files in a folder of images exported from Lightrom Beta 2, it places some of the pictures randomly across the contact sheets, especially when I have more than 60 or more images. The first shot will always show at the end of the set of proofs 5 across, 6 rows down, but some images from the end of atake will end up scattered across the other sheets. If I make a set of contact sheets from images in a folder of the original images, not worked on in Lightroom, they come up perfectly. What can I do to fix this? I had it working OK in Lightroom Beta 1. I'm Working in PC XPSP3. A thousand thanks in advance. Cliff Moore

First, LR3 final has been released.
This doesn't seem to be a problem of LR, rather Photoshop.
Why don't you make the contact sheet in Lightroom?
Why do you think the order is incorrect. Did you check the file names? I guess the order depends on this.

• How can I properly index mpeg2 (from Newtek's 3Play) in Premeire CS5?

I'm trying to drop mpeg2 files from NewTek's 3Play system into a Premiere or AfterEffects timeline. They do not index properly. The
files play back in Media Player, and I can encode them in Adobe Media Encoder (however, they're absolutely dreadful in their playback, no matter how I encode them). NewTek insists I'm the only person in the entire world with this issue. I have all the updates for my Adobe products in place, but can't figure it out.

Can you confrim that you're running Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.2) and After Effects CS5 (10.0.1)? Those updates fixed some problems with MPEG-2 indexing.
If you imported these assets before updating, then you'll need to clear the media cache of these index files to force re-indexing.

• Cs3 export for mpeg2-dvd settings -happy as a clam-

Hi,
Im using CS3...
I want to export from CS3 to mpeg2-dvd preset ( ntsc high quality, which is set to 4 out of 5 on the quality slider setting )
My footage is 720x480i 29.97, 16:9
The dvd will be watched on computer and Digital TV ... so I'm thinking I will convert to progressive.
My bitrates in the preset are:
min: 1.5
avg: 4
max: 7
gop m frames 3
n frames 15
The file size exported is 1.4 gig. It looks OK but not great compared to timeline playback. I've been looking at my notes ---about making exports----but I am so happy ( happy as a clam ! ) ...that I even managed to get a 51 minute story out of this source material ( walking and walking and walking , long story..., not to mention probs with the continuity ).... as I was saying, I am so happy with the product--- I was thinking maybe there's some good advice re: export while I go get some beer to celebrate !
..... I was wondering if you all might have some suggestions for changing my bitrate settings to give me a better quality export....and I will then burn a DVD someday with that exported file.

Hi ,
Thanks Bill..yes, I've looked at those threads, those guys are incredibly
cool...very knowledgeable....
Oddly enough a lot of what they know has come from experimenting and "trial
and error" type stuff....or else is wouldn't be as original and good as it
is.
I admire that.
I'm going to up my avg bitrate and see what happens...screw around with that
a few times ...see how it goes...
You see, at the moment I am just doing the video, no stills ( no slide show)
and no music track ...so that will change as I add more stuff....the
bitrates and overall compression.. I do , thanks to all you guys, know that
much...Just thought I would go get some beers and ask for 51 mins for the
preset of mpeg2-dvd- from CS3 might be....what a better rate might be right
off the bat....
No big deal.
You have no idea !!!! I am sure happy clams make everything better, whether
it's chowder or broadway plays !!!! (or was that about investing clams? )

• Crash AE CS3 when setting MPEG2/H.264

AE crashes with "AE crashed 00::42" box, when trying access MPEG2/H.264 in RenderQueues OutputModule.
We've uninstalled/cleanuped everything Adobe related and done fresh install of AE CS3 on following workstation:
Intel Core i7 920, 6Gb RAM,
WinXPPro x64, SP2, DX9,
nVidia Quadro FX1800, 768Mb RAM, dr.v. 6.14.11.8267,
Latest K-Lite and QT drivers.
sherlock.exe shows "known false positives" - H.264/AVC, MPEG. (are they really so false?)
dxDiag.exe passed perfectly, however Windows Error Reporting displays a number of identical entries:
"AppErr afterfx.exe <ver>, faulting module winmediawriter.vwr <ver>, fault address 0x0002492d;
"
(as I remember this module also caused AE CS4 crash on startup before, so we removed CS4 completely)
Reinstalled suite and QT already several times in different combos - no progress.
Entering win diagnostic mode won't allow installing CS at all. Disabling AVG/Spybot during install made no change.
tired and no idea what to do next.
please, can anyone suggest any solution?
thankyou in advance
P.S. Crash also happens, when in PPro trying to access Adobe Media Encoder.

Thanks, Mylenium. I am surprized about K-Lite, because it worked for me for years untill this workstation. Uninstalling this codec-pack was also what Harm Millaard and Jim Simon suggested in Premiere forum. I followed their advice, but unfortunately it did not change things - AE and PP were still crashing like before.
Things seemed totally grim..
..and then I disabled faulty module mentioned before.. and, man, now IT WORKS!!!!!!! (not fully tested yet, but probably works also because of K-Lite gone). Thanks God my efforts and your advices were not in vain.
Still, I don't know what that winmediawriter.vwr is intended for, but as far as I tried, uncompressed AVIs and MPEG2s (those I specially cared about) are encoding like a charm. Does anyone knows what consequences can I expect?
I left my coleague installing back rest of CS3 to see tomorrow if it still works with such modules as Encore. And probably we will test KLite pack again.

• PP CS3 - Random Crashes

I'm running an Acer Aspire quad duo machine with 3 GB ram and Vista Home Premium (32 bit). Lately, I have been experiencing random crashes during work on a relatively small project (7 nested sequences ... total prog. length 15 minutes).
I get the 'Adobe PP has encountered a problem and will close ... Windows is checking for solutions ...' message & then PP exits. Is there a way to find out what problem was encountered?
Any known Vista or Acer issues that I should look into?
P.S. After a couple of these incidents, when I clicked on Premiere, it would not reopen. Had to restart the computer.

32-bit Vista is supported by Adobe, however its new security measures can cause problems for older applications like Premiere Pro CS3.
Here are some troubleshooting tips.
Cheers

• [CS3] Search Index Markers

Is there a way to search for index markers and then get the content from it to put it in a new created anchored inline textframe? I wan't to create side-heading like in Framemaker.

Hi Peter,
what a nice script!
I have took the liberty of doing some modifications to take use of the conditional text feature in
InDesign CS4. So one can make the previous index entries visible or not.
Here it goes with the (new) function 'conditional_note()' instead of 'side_note()':
// index2text.jsx
// based on a script of Peter Kahrel, modified to take use of InDesign CS4 conditional text
Object.prototype.get = function( )
try {
var myObject = this.item( arguments[0].name );
myObject.name;
catch (e) {
var myObject = this.add( arguments[0] );
return myObject;
var myConditionSet = app.activeDocument.conditions.get( {name:'Index', indicatorMethod:ConditionIndicatorMethod.USE_HIGHLIGHT} )
index2text (app.activeDocument);
//delete_index (app.activeDocument);
myConditionSet.visible = false;
function index2text (doc)
var tops = doc.indexes[0].allTopics;
for (var i = 0; i < tops.length; i++)
for (var j = tops[i].pageReferences.length-1; j > -1; j--)
var ip = tops[i].pageReferences[j].sourceText;
var p_ref = topic_path (tops[i], tops[i].name);
conditional_note (ip, p_ref)
// create topic string. Subtopics are separated by '#'
function topic_path (top, str)
if (top.parent.constructor.name == 'Index')
return str;
else
return topic_path (top.parent, top.parent.name + '#' + str)
function delete_index (doc)
// delete page references and topics
doc.indexes[0].topics.everyItem().pageReferences.everyItem().remove();
doc.indexes[0].topics.everyItem().remove();
function conditional_note (ins_point, s)
ins_point.appliedConditions = myConditionSet;
ins_point.contents = s;
function side_note (ins_point, s)
var sidebar = ins_point.textFrames.add ();
sidebar.geometricBounds = [0,0,10,70];
sidebar.appliedObjectStyle = app.activeDocument.objectStyles.get( { name:'sidebar' } );
sidebar.itemLayer = app.activeDocument.layers.get( { name:'sidebar' } );
sidebar.contents = s;
sidebar.fit (FitOptions.frameToContent);

• Spotlight random indexing?

Yesterday I was erasing an external 40 gb hard drive through disk utility and the program seemed to have froze since it never updated the time remaining (53 minutes). That drive may have some bad sectors. So I just forced my computer to shutdown and unplugged my hard drive (via usb). Today morning when I started the computer, Spotlight was indexing my computer. Did i mess something up because I pulled the hard drive out? Or is this due to me copying 4 gb worth of files from the drive before erasing it? Ive heard that this done if a drive is failing, is that true?

Hard to tell, but in Spotlight's Pref Pane>Privacy tab, add all your drives to that to stop Spotlight from doing it's thing until you get it figured out.
Try Erasing the drive again with the Security option of Zero Data once.

• SPOTLIGHT Randomly indexing?????

• CS3 Indexing - Is it safe yet?

I searched the forums and found lots of older messages about problems with CS3 and indexing bugs. Are these old issues or still relevant?
I just downloaded CS3 update 5.0.3 which says it addresses indexing problems. Should I believe it? I have to have a finish a 14 chapter index this weekend and have half of it finished in CS3. I could apply the patch and keep going or ... what? :-)
TIA

Thanks all for contributing. Unfortunately, my experience with desktop publishing software reaches back to the days of Aldus PageMaker running on Windows runtime and Ventura Publisher for DOS. So, there's an ingrained distrust of "fixes" that end up breaking other things. Hence my apprehension and searching for assurances before I jumped in. That being said, here's the results of my experience.
Considering the magnitude of the problem with indexing, I'm really surprised that I didn't hear from any of the members who complained so much in the earlier archived threads. Anyway, unpatched, the program is useless for "generating" an index from multiple docs. You can do the marking functions for each chapter, but it doesn't compile correctly. It may look like it is, but it definitely isn't. Apply the CS3 5.0.3 patch and it works like a charm!
I finished the index on Sat., night. However, I could have been finished that afternoon or even Fri. afternoon had I known what I know now. I hope that my experience helps someone in the future.

• Disappearing images due to URL slash - CS3

Does anybody know why this happens?
When I type in the URL: http://www.aspirationsresume.com/Samples/Admin/AdminProfessional.html all the images are there.
When a slash appears at the end of the URL, such as http://www.aspirationsresume.com/Samples/Admin/AdminProfessional.html/ the images disappear.
And ever since I started developing web pages in Dreamwearver CS3, Google randomly indexes URLs with or without the end slash. All my other pages developed by Homestead Sitebuilder are naturally indexed by Google without the end slashes.
Any help anyone could give would be GREATLY appreciated.

Here's a link to one of your images -
<img alt="" src="../../Images/DreamsMatter/00_eval.gif
That link delivers to the browser the following message:
* from the current location, go up two folders, look for a folder called "Images", in it find a folder called "DreamsMatter" and in it find the image. Now, when your url has the slash at the end, the browser thinks that it's at this folder location -
http://www.aspirationsresume.com/Samples/Admin/AdminProfessional.html/
and going up two folders would take it to this location -
http://www.aspirationsresume.com/Samples/
where it's going to look for the folder called "Images". But that's wrong, because that folder is actually one level higher. The desired image is here -
http://www.aspirationsresume.com/Images/DreamsMatter/00_eval.gif
That's why your images disappear. The slash at the end messes up the browser's ability to correctly locate the images with a document relative link. Now, if that link were a ROOT relative link, or an absolute link then it wouldn't matter. So if the image tag shown above looked like this -
<img alt="" src="/Images/DreamsMatter/00_eval.gif
then it wouldn't matter if the slash were added to the end of the url link or not, the proper image would be found by the browser. The real question is - how did the slash get at the end of the url anyhow? As Al points out, it's syntactically (and logically) inappropriate for it to be there.

• Mpeg2 Compatibility

I just bought Premiere Pro CS3, installed it last night, and was very excited to begin using it. Now after using it, and reading the forum of incompatibility issues with MPEG2 such as no audio or Random red frames, I think I made a mistake in my purchase decision. Ironically, many suggestions to correct involved the use of other Adobe products, I guess Premiere is not as premiere as the Adobe marketing suggests.
I know, I know one of the first things Im going to be told is to use a real video format, not Mpeg2, or to convert all my video to real video format.
I agree Mpeg2 has many limitations, but Mpeg2 is a widely used and dominant standard in the consumer market. All new hard drive/memory camcorders use this format, unless you choose HiDef in which AVCHD by Song and Panasonic seems to be an option. Im using a JVC GZ-MG155u camcorder which records in Mpeg2 format.
And yes, Im a general consumer, not a video professional, but one of the highly targeted audiences Adobe believes should be using this product for home use.
So when I read the Premier Pro CS3 feature list with the following statements:
Comprehensive video-format compatibility - Work with the formats you want. Edit all standard- or high-definition formats, from DV and HDV to HD and beyond (some formats may require additional hardware).
Native HDV editing - Capture and edit HDV content in real time and in its original format with no conversion or quality loss. Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 supports HDV cameras and VTRs from Sony, JVC, and Canon.
http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/features/allfeatures/
I too believe Mpeg2 should work flawlessly, as do many other users who have posted similar comments in this forum. The simple truth is that Adobe needs to fix these Mpeg2 compatibility issues. Ironically when I use Adobe Bridge CS3, or cheaper editing software such as Roxio, my videos play/edit just fine. Therefore the knowledge is known on how to accommodate the limited Mpeg2 format standard across multiple manufacturers of popular consumer products, please apply this knowledge to Premiere Pro CS3.

> agree Mpeg2 has many limitations, but Mpeg2 is a widely used and dominant standard in the consumer market.
> or cheaper editing software such as Roxio, my videos play/edit just fine.
Then use a consumer Editor like Elements, its' (and cheaper programs) mpeg capabilities are great.
In general editing MPEG in PPRO is a hit and miss for some people, for me I have only had a problem once with MPEG, and have been fine ever since.
Jim you fail to take into account that there are literally hundreds of programs and camera's that record mpeg material, and therefore many different variations, and there is only 1 Premiere.
Again you need to understand MPEG is a delivery format not meant for editing. The reason it is on consumer cameras is because they (manufacturers) are trying to remove the editing stage and make it easier for people wanting to view the footage right away.
> I guess Premiere is not as premiere as the Adobe marketing suggests.
It is! It edits DV, and the mpeg from an HDV camera works fine.
This is a user to user forum, what exactly is your question?

• Problem with random numbers

This is a snippet from a class
public class Cell {
private int index; //index of empire
private int xCoord; //X coordinate on the grid
private int yCoord; //Y coordinate on the grid
private double solidarity; //solidarity value of a cell
private double power; //power of a cell
private Random ran;
public Cell(int i, int x, int y) {
ran = new Random();
index = i;
xCoord = x;
yCoord = y;
solidarity = (double)ran.nextInt(100)/100.0;
......I make a couple hundred of these cells when i run the program and at random it seems, every Cell i create ends up having the same exact solidarity value, which really messes up my simulation. It seems to happen once every 5 runs or so. What could be causing this to happen?

In Java 1.4 Random is initalised with the time.
Thus if you create many Random objects at the same time, they will generate the same "random" values.
In Java 5.0 it prevents this behaviour.
In your case the simplest thing to do is to create one Random and share it.
Or you could create your own random seed using i,x,y for example. (thus ensure the random seed is different for each cell)

• Accessing a list index in a field value

Howdy all,
I am setting up a field loop on a form I am modifying. It is the Question Login form. Instead of looping through all the questions, I am calling a rule to return a list of indexes. The indexes are actual int values. For the field names and values of the questions, I am using references that look like "questions[#$(index)].question". When I view the form using Tools -> Test, it is showing the right number of rows. When I view the form by pushing the "Forgot Your Password?" button on the IdM login, I don't see any of the questions. Does anyone have any ideas why this might be? It seems like it should work!
Thanks,
Jim

Well, like most things in IdM, I was able to get it to work, sort of....
I stopped trying to reference the rule, and instead unrolled the rule logic in the <expresion> for the field loop. This works pretty good. For the question display, my custom policy is now being played out. Basically we are requiring question #0. With the first question we prompt for an student ID value. Then two random questions chosen from the next 5 questions. Finally, the question at index #6, the first user supplied question is asked.
So far so good.
Now, the problem comes when I try to authentication using the questions! I was testing with the policy of all questions being required. This seemed not to work, every time I submited the new form, it would give me the error "One or more Questions not answered." Sooo... then I went back to the random question policy with the same number of questions I answered (4). This became problematic because now my questions[*] array only contained 4 random questions. There was no guarentee the ones I require were there, and my rules that generate random indexes were generating indexes greater then 3, so there was no guarentee that all 4 questions would even show. So now I've settled on the 'any' option for required questions. Here's where it gets weird. If I specify 4 required answers to any questions, then I ALWAYS get "You must correctly answer at least 4 questions". Which I am. 3 policy supplied ones and 1 user supplied question. I've double and tripple checked my answers, to make sure they are correct. If I set it to 3 questions then it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. It is very inconsistant. Sometimes I'll answer all 4 questions and it will still say "You need to answer atleast 3 questions". I can't make it act consistantly at all. I'm pretty much out of ideas at this point....

• JS for randomizing tiered quiz questions?

Alright noble edge users out there - I could really use your help:
I am creating a quiz in edge with 10 levels - each level asks a question dealing with a particular topic for that level. To make it more challenging/random, I want to allow each level's question to pull from a pool of 2-3 possible questions for that particular level (rather than one general pool for all 10 questions).
I have created symbols out of each question - and played with a few randomizing options - but I am a tragically front-end designer
Any help is greatly appreciate!

A lot of that depends on how you've structured your game. Hopefully someone can add to this, but If you're wanting to stick mostly to coding from the timeline in edge animate, then you could do something like this:
1) Insert a timeline label at the location of each question.
2) Insert a timeline trigger at the beginning of your animation to create global array that contains the names of each timeline label for your questions. Something like this:
window.possible_questions = ["Timeline Label 1","Timeline Label 1","Timeline Label 1","Timeline Label 1"];
3) After you create the possibleQuestions array you can then send the user to the first random question by generating a random array index within the range of the remaining questions using something like this:
//generate random index
var random_index = Math.floor(Math.random() * possible_questions.length);
//store the next question label
var next_question = possible_questions[random_index];
//remove the label from the array so we don't come back to it again
possible_questions.splice(random_index, 1);
//send the player to that label
sym.stop(next_question);
4) At each question, put something like this. If you want to detect the end of the game you can do that as well:
if(possible_questions.length == 0){
//game is done
sym.stop("End of Game Timeline Label");
}else{
//we have more questions to ask
//generate random index
var random_index = Math.floor(Math.random() * possible_questions.length);
//store the next question label
var next_question = possible_questions[random_index];
//remove the label from the array so we don't come back to it again
possible_questions.splice(random_index, 1);
//send the player to that label
sym.stop(next_question);
