CS3 takes 10 mins to select some text.

OK today dreamweaver started acting crazy, as soon as I open
a file to work on, it freaks out. To do anything (select text,
change file, click anything) the hour glass hand pops up and it
takes a few minutes before it registers. EVERYTIME though, its
getting really annoying. (I think this happened to me a year ago
and I had to delete a corrupt preferences file or something? I
really don't remember) Does anyone have a clue whats happening?

TextField javascript: select some Text with selStart/selEnd

Hi,
I try to preselect some text content within a TextField via javaScript.
I found some documentation, which states that in the change-Event I could set the selStart and selEnd Attributes by a script.: When a change or full event occurs, if characters were selected in the field, selStart and selEnd
are set to bracket the selected characters.
I tried this, but it did not work for me.
Any Ideas on how to preselect some text in a TextField by script?

AS CS3 - how to paste then select pasted text

Would love help with this:
Part of my script will paste text. After pasting, I would like the script to then select the pasted text (so that it can proceed to apply a style sheet).
How can I specify such a selection?

Hi Shayne, thanks for responding.
The larger goal for the script is to execute a kind of "paste without formatting" that preserves local formatting/overrides (itlas, bolds, character styles). The native feature does not support this.
A designer will have live text, say, on the pasteboard, will copy the live text, then select a destination. The destination contains dummy text, formatted with the desired attributes. The live text needs to pick up the attributes and replace the dummy text, preserving overrides.
The script creates a temporary style sheet capturing the destination attributes, pastes (which replaces the dummy text, putting the live text into position), applies the style sheet (giving the attributes but retaining overrides), then delete the temporary style. Of course as you're pointing out, the style sheet could be applied before pasting.
If I'm thinking about this correctly, the problem is that the source text could have multiple paragraphs. Setting the insertion point with the desired attributes would take care of the first paragraph, but not the subsequent ones.
any ideas?
Meanwhile, if you can find an easy way to do this without copy/paste. . . that would be fantastic!

Select a text from a word/pdf document for tagging.

After an overwhelming response for my [first thread|Thumbnail creation during Image Upload; , I am hoping that my second post will have a solution.
I am currently working on a knowledge management tool using ABAP WD. The requirement is to open the existing documents and select some text and tag/categorize it. I also found out that using flash islands, it is possible to get the selected text from textField and pass it back to the ABAP WD binded variable.
Is there a way to display word/pdf file and perform the text tagging in WD ? using office integration ? Kind help would be greatly appreciated.

If the PDF that you converted already has searchable text, please try disabling OCR as described in this document: How to disable Optical Character Recognition (OCR) when converting PDF to Word or Excel. (If the PDF was created from a scanned document and doesn't already have searchable text, disabling OCR isn't a great option, as the text won't be searchable/editable in the converted Word doc.)

Selecting a Text Frame in another file (JS/CS3)

Hi, I'm a newbie so this is probably a dumb question.
I'm trying to copy the contents of a text frame in another ID file and copy/paste them into another text frame of my active document. Every example I find creates a NEW text frame and copies it and they work fine but I'm having trouble selecting the text frame or its contents (it's the only object in the document) in the already existing document.
The section I'm struggling with is:

I'm doing something wrong here. It doesn't like the 'parentStory' in the select line. I'd be happy with a way of just doing a 'select all' and being able to paste it into the new document with a variable name so I can edit it.

I think the third line should be:
var mySourceSlugFrame = mySourceSlugPage.textFrames.item(0);
Note though that you don't actually need to select/copy/paste. You can use duplicate().

(PS CS3) Selecting all text to change fill color?

I have a graphic with text - the text was not inserted by Photoshop, and it's not selectable as text; it's just part of the graphic. I'd like to change the color of the text.
I can select each letter and individual block of punctuation, etc. by using the Magic Wand and Shift+Click on each item. Is there a way, though, to simply select all of the text - or at least one complete line - with one or two moves or commands, vice the tediousness of clicking in each letter, comma, i dot, and so forth?

Given that the text is uniformly colored against a colorless background, a VERY easy shortcut can be to just use Image - Adjust - Hue/Saturation, pick a color, then change the Hue slider.
Literally only a few seconds work...

Using the CTRL button to select multiple text segments in Design Editor

This may be a fairly elementary question, however I'm very new to RoboHelp.
I'm currently building an online help text system, and when formatting my html files in Design Editor, I have to apply styles one at a time. I was hoping RoboHelp would have a function identical to Microsoft Word whereby holding down the CTRL key would allow you to select various segments in the file and apply the style. Eg. selecting only text you want to apply Heading 3 to.
If RoboHelp does not have this functionality, this project will take me in the vicinity of 7 years to complete. Thanks for your time.

No it doesn't work that way. What you need to do is create some character styles in your style sheet and apply those.
Paragraph styles are defined something like
P {
    font-size: 10pt;
    margin-top: 0pt;
    margin-bottom: 6pt;
    font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;
    color: #000000;
    font-weight: normal;
P.Normal-Indent {
    margin-left: 20pt;
where the second P definition will inherit all that is in P plus add the indent.
When you select those styles, they will be applied to the whole paragraph.
You can also create characters classes. If you do it within RoboHelp, RH will write the CSS code for you. If you edit the CSS outside RH, then instead of writing P or some other tag, you would normally start with the full stop so you might have

    font-size: xx-small;
    font-family: Courier;
to apply the Courier font to a selection in any paragraph style.
In RoboHelp you need to prefix the character code with "span" to make it display in the dropdown, thus you would need:
span.code {
    font-size: xx-small;
    font-family: Courier;

Selecting Overset Text In InCopy CS5 [AppleScript]

I am trying to fix the AppleScript I used in InCopy CS3 to select overset text in CS5.
In my old script I tell InCopy to select the overset text in the current story. Simple command:
select text of last text column of myStory
In CS5 it now selects the last column in the layout. So in CS3 the last column was defined as the overset set if there was overset text. Now it is the last column. I admit that I think this was a bug in CS3 but it worked for me.
Now I have no way to select all Overset text. If I run
set myOverset to overset text of myStory
This will get me the number of lines of overset text. So I think, if I know the number of lines of overset set, then I can use the total number of lines of text, subtract the number overset lines, and that will tell me the first line I need to select. Doesn't work. If I try to find out the number of lines in a story, the result is less than the number of lines shown to me in Story View. The amount it is off varies.
Does anyone have any ideas. Also, I have tried to select multiple lines using AppleScript but InCopy doesn't like that.

Most logical answer would be that for some reason your specific text was not exported as InCopt text (you have to do this for every text story you have and want to be able to edit). If you click on such a text frame, does a name get selected in the assignment and/or Links panel? If not, the text is not an InCopy text.

CS2 Doc Converted to CS3 takes 2+ Minutes to Open Every Time

We are in the process of switching 34 users from ID CS2 to ID CS3 and are having file conversion nightmares. They need to re-use their old CS2 ad layouts but many users are complaining that the conversion to CS3 takes several minutes. In our test period we had noted that but once the doc was converted the subsequent file opening time in CS3 was greatly reduced. But it now appears that when some users are opening the converted and saved docs they are still experiencing the same file opening delays as when the docs were being converted from CS2. Then a different user will open the same doc and it will open immediately. We have tried to find a common setup or preference or plug-in issue that might be a problem, but so far have struck out. 6 users have brand new MacPros running Leopard 10.5.2 with all Adobe CS3 patches installed. This group uses identically configured everything and they still have inconsistent file opening behavior! Some open instantly and others take 2-5 minutes for the same file. We have noted similar inconsistency amongst our users who still have GS PowerMacs running Tiger 10.4.11. Their CS3 is patched and fully updated. Now I would expect there to be inconsistencies between the Tiger and Leopard G5 and Intel groups, but we see the same thing with the same file taking different amounts of time to open after having been converted and saved and then opened again with the same-configuration users, no matter what they are using.
We use a Xinet file and print server and all users are supposed to work on files off the server so the working file stays up to date, but for testing we have been having them download the same files to their desktops and opening them. One of my test Macs is an Intel Mac running Tiger 10.4.11 and Adobe CS3 all updated and I use the same 3rd party plug-ins as everyone else. We only use two sets of 3rd party plug-ins - the Xinet WebNative and FullPress plug-ins and Extensis Suitcase X1 client Auto-Activation plug-in getting fonts from a Suitcase server.
We don't have the problem if documents are created from scratch in CS3. Unfortunately, it will take a very long time to get to where we would never be using any of our old CS2-created files, so we need to figure out a workable solution. It is mainly a question of time, which is something you never have enough of before your press deadline and the users are balking at the amount of production time they are losing waiting for files to open. They have a tendency to force-quit InDesign before it can finish opening and then they have to deal with all the file recovery dialogues the next time. They are getting very frustrated.
Has anyone run into this behavior or come up with a solution? If so I'd love to hear from you!

I did some more trial and error testing since I posted my original message. This is what seems to be working:
You can leave the Suitcase Auto Activation plug-in there, but if you go into its preferences make sure the box for "Activate fonts in embedded objects" is not checked.
That made all the difference - so far. I need to try this on a couple more of my troubled Macs before I will declare victory!
In the Suitcase Client prefs you should also turn off Suitcase's auto activation and let the application plug-in handle that. I read that somewhere else a couple days ago, maybe it was the Extensis forums? Can't remember. But that's how I have mine set on my test Macs. (one MacPro running Tiger and a MacBook Pro running Leopard)

Unable to select 'Art Text' object.

Hi,
Not sure whether this happens only to me. I just added one image (jpg) through Insert -> File options changed it opacity, then I selected the art text tool for adding some text.
But after adding the art text and when I tried to select the text, Instead of selecting the art text, I was only able to select the background jpg.
Can anyone shed some light here?.

It would be beneficial for the development team to take a look at the file.
When the text is above the image it should work as expected. When it is behind, the image will be selected. You can always select "blocked" objects with help of the "Objects" Panel on the left.

Best way to determine optimal font size given some text in a rectangle

Hi Folks,
I have a preview panel in which I am showing some text for the current selected date using a date format.
I want to increase the size of the applied font so that it scales nicely when the panel in which it is drawn is resized.
I want to know the best way in terms of performance to achieve the target. I did some reading about AffineTransform and determining by checking ina loop which is the correct size, but it does not feel like a good way.
I would appreciate some tips.

Can't select some words/regions in Mail on Mavericks

So in 10.9 Maverics Mail application, I can only select some words and regions for editing.
Some text simply cannot be selected via mouse cursor, or even via moving the cursor with the keypad arrows.
Text on the left side, up to about 40 characters or so, is selectable. After that, nothing on the right is.
You basically have to delete everything after if you want to edit a word in the region.
Please fix.

I'm not having the same issue with Mavericks in the Mail app.
A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that may help.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Then launch Mail.

I just noticed that one of the restore methods you posted was to put it into Disk Mode First rather than just use the resstore straight off, I Have tried that and seems to have solved the problem, If it has thank you. previously I have only tried just restoring it skipping this extra step. Hope my iPod stays healthy, if it doesnt its a warrenty job me thinks any way thanks again
