CS3 to CS4 Project compatibilty.

May have been asked/answered before butI missed it.
... as soon as possible can someone with CS4 advise if CS3 Projects open in CS4 (and vice versa).

Thanx
I always have a lot of legacy projects that get adapted/ reedited regularly (TVCs)
So everytime a new version emerges it is important I can successfully move the projects forward at least. I do not want to build and manage another NLE system specifically for CS4.
I have one for CS2 and one for CS3 already but that is because one is SD and the other is HD.

  • Converting CS3 to CS4 Project

    I need to convert my CS3 project to a CS4 project- I need the OMF2 of CS4
Will use a PC version for both CS3 to CS4.
Does anybody know the steps to converting CS3 to CS4 in detail?
    Please.

Watch out for some of the filters and keyframing from within Premiere, as well was the 3rd party issues.
I've had problems in opening cs3 projects which have things like clips that combine time remapping and clip movements via keyframing that have not came through the same in CS4.  Also garbage mattes specifically seem to translate incorrectly and they have to be adjusted.
But if it's a simple cut to cut with a few dissolves, I don't see any major problems.  Skim through the timeline after the import/convert and make sure everything looks as it should.

  • CS3 to CS4 project conversion issues

Imported a CS3 project (I had saved in Project Manager) to CS4. After the update prompt, I find the project has many issues. None of my Boris F/X are there, many of the parameters I set in Adobe effects controls are set differently (position, scale, etc.), the timeline shows everything needs rendered (even original video clips) and when I test render a portion of the work area, the quality goes down, the frame size changes and I get exposure changes. Lots to correct and not sure where to start. Did I miss something in the settings??  Pretty new to CS4, Thanks

Unfortunately common wisdom does not apply in this case, as it is a
3-stage project produced from late 2008 to late 2010, plus future
updates. So, common wisdom would be to make helpful replies.

  • CS3 to CS4 project

I opened a CS3 project with CS4. All the files seems to be in the project window, but the timeline says "timeline (no sequences)". There is "sequence 01" in the project window. How do I get the timeline to see this project or sequence?

Double click the sequence in the project window. This has only been answered a couple of hundred times. Next time do a search. And use a better more descriptive topic for your post.

  • How to Open PPro CS4 project in PPro CS3?

I have to make hundreds of individual avis from a Ppro CS4 project. In CS4 the Media Encoder has to open up for each one and then I must wait til it loads the clip and then I can keep them in queue and do many at once but it takes forever. Is there any way to open this project in CS3 so I can simply export movie files one after the other (without that horrible media encoder)?

Unfortunately, there is almost zero backward compatibility. I did find that Encore CS3 Projects could be Opened, with few issues, in my EncoreDVD 2.0, but that was surprising, and not of help to you.
Now, one can use a bit of a workaround, if such is required. One can edit loosely in CS4 (remember, you will want Handles), or edit very tightly with all Transitions, knowing that those will not be changed in CS3. When done, Export (for SD Projects, either the DV-AVI Type II, or Lagarith would be good), and then Import that into CS3.
Also, an EDL might be useful. There is another option, similar to EDL, that starts with an A, but my mind has gone blank. Others will be quick to offer that, and tell you if it would be useful in your case - sorry.

  • Moving a big PP CS4 project to CS3 ...how to ...?

I cannot keep working on my project with PP CS4 I keep having very ennoying problems :  un-openable projects. like once a week or so, a project and all the auto saved version of it - become unopenable... the progress bar stalls...
I thought I solved my problems when I upgraded to vista ultimate 64 and did a very simple setup (CS4 and a few animation softwares... not much more...).
I spent too much money and way too much time and haven't understand WHY some of my project won't open (it olny happens 5% to 10 time
I lost A LOT of time trying all sorts of things, all the operating systems (XP home, XP pro, XP 64, VISTA64 and WINDOWS 7 build 7600) ....
    I have a DELL precision 690 workstation 2 dual core/3ghz - 8 gig ram - a quadro 3450 video card ... almost nothing installed but the production premium CS4 suite ...
We still will be working for at least 3 months on this project...
I'm fed up with all the lost time and I have ABSOLUTELY no clue why we have problems, despite all the troubleshooting and tiem spent on the forums...
So I lost faith in PREMIERE CS4.
I tried hard enough. I need a faithfull editing software.
I have to decide between CS3 or FINAL CUT.
We are working on a half hour animated film.
Our latest PP timeline includes close to 2000 medias (still/QT and audio files).
Has anyone done this operation ? ... going from PP CS4 to CS3 ?
I am ready to spend a full day to do copy/paste - export timelines one by one ....
I am not ready to redo the whole editing, as it may take a long while to place all the media
    at the right place.
Any clue or trick or plug in or whatever that could help us do this move would be greatly appreciated!
also I know I am on an ADOBE forum, but I am also interested in the pros and cons of cs3 vs FCP...
I would prefer using CS3 as we use photoshp and AE a lot in this project and like to stay in the ADOBE world... but if there's an easy way to go from PP CS4 to FCP we may consider it...
... another small hope is the 4.2 upgrade...?
    thanks for any help!!

First attempt was with the whole project (I have 35 sequences/timelines within the same prject - project is 41 meg big)
    around 1850 medias.
I did the export yesterday evening - after supper, it was still exporting .. thougt I let it overnight .. and this morning it looked like it was still calculating.. I hit CANCEL... and then PREMIERE crashed...

  • Downgrade Premiere Pro CS4 project to CS3 possible?

Is it possible to export a CS4 Premiere Pro project in such a way that it will open in CS3? Is there any neutral format such as InDesign's .inx format?

    Tam,
I rather doubt that you can do a direct transfer of a CS4 Project to CS3. Your only course might be to Export your CS4 to DV-AVI and Import that file. It will have all of edits in place, so you will not have the individual Clips. You can use the Razor, to "create" individual Clips, but you will NOT have Handles on these. You could eliminate all Transitions and then extend each individual Clip to include Handles, but you'll then need to re-set all Ins-n-Outs.
Now, you might get lucky. Whiled doing some testing for another user, I Opened his CS3 Encore file in Encore2, without even thinking - dang if it didn't work to about 90%. I think it would have worked 100% had I had his Assets and exact folder structure, but that was not what we were testing.
You might just try Importing the .prproj file into CS3 and X-your fingers. As I started, I would NOT expect this to work, but who knows. If it does, even to a degree, please report back, as this is a common question with each new release.

  • Loading a CS4 project into CS3

My son has CS4 and I have Premiere CS3. How can I load one of his saved CS4 projects into CS3? There doesn't appear to be a "save as" feature in CS4, nor an export option.
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm in the middle of a big project and I don't want to upgrade midstream.

Thanks for the response, but it seems a little short-sighted on Adobe's part: even Microsoft allows you to save documents in previous versions so others can read them. Anything for an upgrade fee, I guess.

  • Making an AE CS4 project compatible with AE CS3

    Hi,
Is there a way to save a CS4 project so it can be opened with AE CS3?
    Thanks!
    Pau

No, not at all. The only thing you could do is to copy&paste items from CS4 back to CS3, if it's important. It will however only work on a 64bit operating system, as normal 32bit OSs will not allow to launch two instances of After Effects.

  • Enabling Installation of CS3 and CS4 products that will not install on Windows 7 64Bit.

Adobe installers are not known for their helpful or forgiving ways & I have more than once had to reinstall Windows when installation of CS3 and CS4 products has failed with patently inscrutable errors.
The background to the current issue that I was attempting to install PS CS4 on a W7 system which already had CS CS3 installed. The CS4 installer threw up inscrutable messages indicating  that the installation could not proceed and to contact Adobe (they are joking right ? Their phone & web support is notoriously UN-helpful).
After reading through threads suggesting that I uninstall CS3, apply CS3 and CS4 cleaning scripts I was in exactly same position I have found myself in on least 2 occasions with WinXP. By this time I couldn't event get CS CS3 to reinstall!
Then I decided to review the event log and found a number of installer events thrown up by the Adobe installers resembling "Error 1402. Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\xxxxxxxx".
I tracked down this very helpful solution which allowed me to change the registry permissions on the parent key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\ Components and propagate the new permissions down to the child keys.
    http://www.okino.com/conv/changing_windows_registry_permissions.htm.
My advice is to follow instructions for "A More All-Encompassing Solution" and propagate the permissions right down to all the child keys as I could see a number of separate adobe installer errors in the event log. Also note the instruction to change the Owner from 'System' to 'Administrators' in Advanced settings. This is necessary in order for the Permissions change to be accepted and replace all the child object permissions.
As with most registry changes good advice to backup your registry hive first (although I didn't; by this time I was already expecting to have to reinstall Windows) and restart your system after making the registry changes before attempting to install  / reinstall CS3 or CS4 products.
Hope this solution works as well for others as it did for me as the Adobe support on this issue has been next to useless.
[P.S. Q: Did you hear the joke about the guy who worked on product installation at Adobe rocking up at job interview with 'Adobe Installation Project Team' on his Resume? A: That that is the joke! If you wanted another job in installation development you would hardly admit to experience at Adobe ;)]

My apologies John I didn't realize that I was addressing the official custodian of Photoshop.
Incidentally my advice is intended for others in a similar situation who find themselves stalled during installation and otherwise contemplating a re-installation of Windows. I believe this would be obvious to most forum participants who had actually read my original post.

  • CS4 project into CS5?

    Will a CS4 project open in CS5
(Maybe you could do a test on this Harm if you have time.)
I would like to know so I can plan project migration to a new system.
Answer would be good for the CS5 FAQ sub forum

    Shooternz,
You should be able to recall my posted 'rant', a couple months back when I found I could not import my CS3 project into CS4 without 'errors' that rendered the project untenable in CS4.  Both forum users and Tech support advised me to purchase, 'No Problems', then implied error on my part when it didn't - further compounding my aggravation.  Tech Support's story changed from 'No Problems' to 'serious errors can occur in some instances' & Adobe refused to refund me until I got my state's ombudsman involved.  Now my case may just be 'some instance' but I suffered a lot of emotion and wasted a lot of time. Before you spend the dollars, please, download the trial version and test it with your specific projects.

  • Cs4 project loaded as desktop mode in cs5

    Hello:
Just made the full upgrade yesterday from cs4 to cs5 on windows 7 from vista using the matrox with max.  Loving the HD editing.  I also tried to open an SD cs4 project in cs5.  While opening, and after the message that tells you it is converting to cs5, I got this message - 'The editing mode used by this sequence could not be loaded.  The sequence will be opened in desktop mode.' So the project opened, I created a new sequence with the matox settings and cut and pasted the original sequence into it.  Any area that had to be rendered went pixelized.  The only way I could get rid of this was to remove all colour correction, effects and transitions.  When I reintroduced them, I ended up with the same result.  I have found a work around, and that is opening a new project and importing the old cs4 project into it rather than just trying to open the cs4 project with cs5.  Rather than using matrox settings, I just rerendered the sequence and it works fine, however, I don't have my program monitor which is controled through matrox.  This will be the last of two SD projects, but wondered if anyone else had this issue.
    Thanks, Christine

Yes, the Export function is the best that you will be able to do. There is usually forward compatibility between versions' Projects (though with a few pitfalls and failures), but there has never been backward compatibility. Closest that I have ever seen was some CS3 Encore Projects would Open in EncoreDVD 2.0, but that does not help you.
    Good luck,

  • How do I down save an Illustrator 6 file for CS3 and CS4?

We save illustrator files to a windows network, No problems so far opening between the different versions.  But now we are getting errors like can't open illustration.  The file is locked or in use.  ID = 54.  I have tested the suggestions where you save the file in illustrator and then select the version to downsave to, however this does not work.  Also the downsave is from Creative Cloud 6 to CS3 or CS4. CC6 is installed on an i-Mac 10.9.2, CS3 and 4 installed on Mac 10.5.8.

Why do you need to "savw" the audio files? Whatever edits you make will replace the old audio file with the new edits. Just do what you need to do to the audio and the corresponding file in your folder will be changed accordingly. If you DO need to save for some reason, When you "save as" simply save as the same name and it will replace the old one.
Work as you usually do, and then every now and then, go to the audio window and choose "select unused audio" in the edit menu. Then hit the delet button! Anything not being used in the arrangement will be deleted.
Read about the Project manager. It will delete any unused audio files from the folder you are working in and consolidate all files, samples, etc. It's worth learning.
    Good luck!

  • Same clip, different lengths in CS3 and CS4?

I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having importing my CS3 project into CS4 and I noticed that the clip lengths in the properties windows do not match for my files. For example, if I open my clip in CS3 (where it was originally edited) it shows it this:
    File Path: F:TapesTape 24Scene 018 - Ally & Paul Coffee (9).m2t
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 365.4 MB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 1440
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00;01;54;14
Average Data Rate: 3.2 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.333
But in CS4 the properties show up as this:
    File Path: F:TapesTape 24Scene 018 - Ally & Paul Coffee (9).m2t
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 365.4 MB
    Image Size: 1440 x 1080
    Pixel Depth: 32
    Frame Rate: 29.97
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00;01;53;08
Average Data Rate: 3.2 MB / second
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.3333
What would cause this discrepancy? I shot at 30f on a Canon XH-A1. My project settings in CS4 are HDV 1080p30. Do I have the wrong settings? How could the same clip be of two different lengths. I'm so confused!
Please respond only if you have a suggestion. I am not looking for comments about how I shouldn't switch programs midstream. I would like some honest help, however!
    Thanks!

    I've got a couple suggestions.
First would be to see if its a problem with the import or a just a difference in how CS3 and CS4 reads the files. If you import one of .m2t files directly into CS4 and not through importing the project, does it give you the same info as you listed above? (I'm assuming the file info above was derived from importing the project and then looking at the file's info.) If it is correct when independently brought into premiere, then the problem lies with importing a CS3 project and I would suggest trying to unlink then link your media. If there is no difference, then it's something else.
Second suggestion is to export an EDL out of CS3. Then, instead of importing your CS3 project into CS4, import the EDL and see if this resolves your edit points.
One note I've noticed with the EDL's in premiere, they don't import well when generated in framecount mode, but work fine in timecode mode (in CS3 this is just what your timeline time indicator mode is set at, right click the time indicator and set it to Timecode. in CS4 this doesn't work and you have to set the Display Format to Timecode under your Project Settings.)
    Good luck.

  • Installed CS5 now CS4 projects don't work

Further to an assurance in another thread that CS4 and CS5 could happily co-exist I installed the CS5 Master Collection full version on my Win7Pro 64 system.
Now I have just opened a project in CS4. The media is all marked offline. When I try and re-link it I get an error message "File Format Not Supported"...
The original files in this project were M2T and .MP4 from Sony Z5 and EX1 respectively.
Any ideas about how to get this all working again? I did make an image of my system file before installing CS5 so can always revert to that, but I would like to be able to use CS5 as well as revisiting CS4 projects!
Just to add then even when I create a new CS4 project try and import either M2T or BPAV (haven't tried any other formats) I still get this "File Format Not Supported" error message. So it looks like CS5 has hosed my CS4's ability to import media!  There must be an easy fix to this.... and yes, Premiere 4.2.1.
    Cheers
    Mark

    Mark,
Sorry that we did not have a quick and easy answer for you.
At least with Harm's reporting, it confirms my thoughts that the co-existence of the two versions should not be an issue.
Over the decades, Adobe has been great about this. The only two instances of problems, that I can recall was with the CS2 Production Studio programs (all of them), if one later installed PrElements 4 - CS2 Production Studio got hosed, but was easily handled with a quick Repair Install of each program in the suite - took me about 45 mins. total. Obviously, Adobe had not anticipated a user with CS2 installing PrE 4, but by the time that I did, they had a KB Article on the issue. The other was if a use had PrPro CS3 installed, then installed CS4, and later uninstalled CS3 - it took some necessary elements form CS4, so again the Repair Install was the easy trick. Otherwise, no one issue that I know of. On one machine, I had PS 4, 5, 7 and CS for various reasons. No issue. Same for several versions of AI, both PageMaker and InDesign, and on the list goes. No issues.
Good luck, and hope the Project goes well, and that you'll get CS5 running smoothly,
    Hunt
