[CS3 / VBS] InCatalog Question

Does anyone here work with InCatalog? I have a script I'm trying to use - InCatalogUpdateDataUsingODBC() to pull data from an active document.
I'm trying to look at the actual InCatalog Link Field Name (ex. PartNumber, Price, etc.) to pick which data to actually pull from. I'm not sure how to incorporate it with the UpdateDataUsingODBC().
I'm not sure if I'm making complete sense but any help would be greatly appreciated since I'm trying to get this script done asap.

Are you trying to make a text frame expand to fit content? I was told that there is no intrinsic functionality for doing that, though there apparently is a script out there for it. If that's what you're doing, look at the InDesign WIndows forum for reference to the script.

InDesign CS3 - Vanilla Install - Question Marks All Over My Content

Yes, I'm still using InDesign CS3 on my MacBook Pro from 5 years ago. CS3 has worked like a charm and I've never had a problem with any files until this morning.
I've got a 120 page book, each page with images and text boxes, none of which are threaded. I opened my file this morning and all my content boxes: images and text have question marks on the top left corner.
I have no plug-ins. The installation is straight out of the box with the occasional updates, which stopped quite awhile ago.
The error that pops up when I place the cursor in a text box is: "31-40-TasksAssemble-Instal.incx" cannot be located. Another error is: "31-40 TasksDirectly supe-1.incx cannot be located. I have no idea what these mean and when I did a Google search there were only 3 returns and they were from what appeared to be software pirate sites. I can't find a reference to this on the Adobe forums either.
I've saved under a different name, different file type and replaced the preferences, all to no avail. I think the application is behaving as though I've "checked out" the content, but I don't share my files with anyone and the file itself isn't on a network - there is nowhere to check out to, and the commands to check in is grayed out so I can't reverse the behavior.
I'm stumped and I have a deadline! Can anyone help??

No one has worked on or had access to this file but me. I'm on a network but I'm a Mac in a PC world and no one would even know how to find my hd, let alone do anything on it.
I have to believe it is related to my moving my entire project folder to an external hd (not just the file as I mentioned before) as a means of backup. I don't know why it would matter or what it could have done unless there are files created in the Library that are somehow related/linked to the stories.
I'm still searching the Adobe Forums for something related but all ID/IC related discussions relate to people actually using IC!
I've unlinked all of my content from IC and now I'll have to see what happens.

I've been editing my layout most of the day and so far so good.
The oddity of each box asking for a link to InCopy, which has never been used, happened only after I dragged my project folder to an external hard drive as a precautionary backup. All InDesign files in both original and backup folder suffered this problem. I didn't dare open any other ID files for fear of corrupting them so I can't say how widespread this problem would have been.
I do not know why making a copy of a folder would have created this problem and I can't find any discussion thread that talks about it, much less sheds any light on the subject.
After unlinking all of the boxes from their non-existent "host file" the boxes remained intact complete with images and formatting. I saved often!

CS2, CS3 & CS4 upgrade questions

Is it possible to have both CS2 and CS3 installed and functional on the same Windows machine at the same time? Same question with CS3 and CS4 and, if it can be done, are there any known issues that result?
I need to migrate our graphics station to the newer CS3 (and eventually CS4 ... probably around the time CS10 is released), but I can't afford to lose access to projects during the much slower than normal process of getting the newer version fully ready to go (i.e., all plugins and the many custom files they use within my projects accessible by the newer version). Sorry for the 101 question ... I work in corporate video now and our facilities are way behind the curve so I have now become that way too.

As Navarro said: Should be no problem. Be aware, though, that several of the "Edit original" and "Open in Bridge" type functions will always resort to the most modern version and these functions thus will not work fully in older versions. If e.g. you chose to "Browse Presets" in AE CS3 with CS4 already on your system, it would open Bridge CS4 and you would be able to view the presets, but could not apply them with a double-click as you would otherwise. Also expect some confusion when working with MPEG stuff. You may get warnings about missing CoDecs in Encore and Premiere or weird licensing warnings ("not included in trial version" and such...)

Bridge/Photoshop CS3 Web Gallery Question

Hi There, I have a question about the Photoshop cs3 Flash Gallery, particularly the flashobject.js file and index.html file. Whenever I try and open the finished Flash Gallery HTML page, I get a message that says "Please upgrade your Flash player" and "Already have Flash player installed? Click Here." Is there a way that I can remove that and just have it go to the Flash Gallery? I notice that it says Flash Player 6 but that is an old version. I am not very knowledgeable in javascript so any help would be appreciated.

[CS3 / VBS] Groups in CS3

I've converted over a few scripts that used to work fine in both CS and CS2.
One particular scripts extracts text from tables on multiple textframes that include tables. After changing over to CS3 with this script, it does not extract any of the text from textframes/tables that has been grouped with other objects (for example images and other text frames).
My question is there a way I can have the script ungroup items prior to running the rest of the script or is there any easier way than rewriting the whole script to include groups?

Photoshop CS3 A few questions (using Windows

I've just got a job in that requires file names including a full stop
(8.6 for instance). This was never a problem with my old version of Adobe but now, if I save a file like this it then becomes unrecognisable to Adobe when I want to re-open it. Yeeeeeek this is not good.
Second question actually applies to any version of Adobe I've sampled
after my lovely 5.5. When you use CTRL T to free transform, for
instance, you get the litte tabs appear that you can click and drag
for manipulation. In 5.5 the tabs would appear at the edge of the
file window even if the actual size of the layer was way bigger than
this window. Now they appear around the layer rather than the window
so, as the layer is usually a lot bigger, I have to keep zooming out
of the file just so it becomes small enough within it's window for me
to be able to see and use these tabs. I hope that makes sense -
rather hard to describe. This is driving me mad and I'm wondering if
there is a setting I can use to change this.

Thanks for replying - no it didn't crop it to canvas size. For the sort of illustration I do I'm always selecting some scanned arwork from a sheet I've inked and scanned then dropping into a file. File often a lot smaller than the drawn image as I draw at a larger scale. I then press CTRL T to free transform and regardless of the size of the layer that I'd layed on top of the initial canvas, the tabs used to appear around the outside of the canvas rather than the layer. The tabs then could be used to drag the layer smaller same as they do in CS3. CS3 is making me have to enlarge the window the files in or zoom right out of the file to make it tiny just so I can get to see the tabs that are way outside of the canvas because they show up around the outside of the layer size. really hard to describe - probably just bored you and still not explained myself.

Premiere Pro CS3 Media Encoder question...

I got a question regarding the Premiere Pro CS3 Media Encoder.
I am converting a sequence in Premiere Pro CS3 which contains footage from a '.vob' file which is NTSC, 720x480, 16:9 to a '.flv' file.
Now I'm doing this via Premiere Pro CS3 Media Encoder and it let's me choose the Width & Height but there is no checkbox to keep the proportions - which I find is very, very inconvenient...
So if I wanna convert this to a .flv file which is 400 high, the width should be 600, right ?
Also, there is no way to specify to keep the 16:9 aspect ratio.
Is that done automatically or how/where can I specify it ?

If you want 16:9. you need to consider that the lower number should probably be divisible by 72. So, if you want something about 600 wide, I would use 360 for the lower number which gives you a frame size of 640X360
When divisible by 72, it is evenly divisible by both 8, which is great for encoders, and 9, which is the frame ratio you want.
Just choose square pixels and you will be fine.

Am thinking there may be a few questions on this topic where

have increased and some more OS versions are not supported.

2200 with 1.25 gig ram with XP Pro fully updated/patched?
a search at adobe using athlon / cs3 found a note that some

Premiere in the video bundle won't work on that cpu. Don't do
video so no
problem i guess. So i could assume the machine will run
indesign/dreamweaver/photoshop/fireworks/illustrator with no
more than usual

CS3/Windows 8 Questions

My last little side question is, if i run a trial version of Windows 8 on my computer, will it be an accurate representation of how it will really be if I install Windows 8 and reinstall the CS3?

[JS][CS3] Script deployment question

Hi everyone,
I am currently writing scripts in a corporate environment (~30 users), and I'm contemplating the easiest and most efficient way of deploying the scripts. We have a couple of scripts already with the users that are located locally on their machines. As time goes on we'll be writing more and more scripts and updating the existing ones as necessary.
My current inclination is to stop saving the files locally on the individual machines and instead put a shortcut to a shared server folder in the scripts folder instead. In my testing it seems to work fine without any significant delay, and it automatically populates all of the files in linked folder. I basically want to be able to make sure that users are always launching the most up-to-date code and that any future scripts can be easily deployed without me walking around to everyone's desk (or worse, e-mailing instructions and hoping for the best).
Are there any downsides/performance issues to this approach? It's a strictly desktop environment, so I don't have to worry about laptop users who are not connected to the network. Is there an alternate way that would be smoother?

We've tried it both ways. On our 12 InCopy machines (OSX), we have a symbolic link from /Applications/Adobe InCopy CS5/Scripts/Scripts Panel/ to a shared folder. This works great as long as our file server doesn't go down, and all sorts of other things would break horribly. And the User scripts folder is still available for any machine-specific customizations.
For our 4 InDesign machines, we decided that was a little too much risk. So instead we have a script, copyScripts.jsx, that just copies scripts from the file server to the Application scripts folder. So everytime there is a change, we go around to those 4 machines and run copyScripts. This works OK.
It's a little bit of a pain but it also insulates us a bit from bugs, and it means that whoever is using InDesign can decide to not update the scripts if they are in the middle of something critical. They can choose to defer taking the script updates.
I think if we had to do it over, we probably wouldn't bother with the copyScripts mechanism. The centralized shared folder works pretty well. But it's not so annoying that we've gotten rid of it. And for 4 machines, it's not a huge burden.
Also, there are some questions of development. If it's convenient to do development in the ESTK, having the shared folder means you cannot just rightclick in the Scripts panel and choose Edit Script. Or if you do, then any changes you save as you are developing the script are instantly available to everyone, potentially breaking their work if there are problems, or if there is debugging output ,etc., etc. So you need to make sure you do a development in a different place. Just something to keep in mind.

Hi! I have an xml-file with tables that I want to import into Indesign. It works fine when I use the Import CALS tables as Indesign tables in "Import options", but the problem is when I do this some emphasis elements inside the "entry" elements isn't found when I try to use XMLRules to format the emphasis elements in the document... The structure of the table can be like this (in general): Tabell table tblgrp tbody row <entry>Some text...<emp Type = "bold">bold text</emp></entry> <entry>Some text</entry> <entry>some text</entry> row tbody tblgrp table Tabell When I import the Table as CALS tables to Indesign tables, the table structure is collapsed into just a <Tabell> element. I assume this is the reason why the <emp> element isn't found. I try to solve this by NOT importing CALS tables to Indesign tables. I see then that the whole table structure is intact in the structure panel and the <emp> elements are also found by the XMLRules, but the contents is not put inside a table in the indesign document. To put the table elements into a table in Indesign I use the Command: "ConvertElementToTable" but this doesnt work very well. I use it in XMLRules like this: Public Property Get xpath() xpath = "//Tabell" End Property Public Function apply(myXMLElement, myRuleProcessor) With myXMLElement .ConvertElementToTable "row", "entry" End With apply = False End Function Does anyone have any experience of importing XML-tables in Indesign and formatting them? Just check the checkbox "Import CALS tables as Indesign tables" in the XML import options dialogbox. Then it should go automatically.
The problem with this approach is that the entire table structure is collapsed to a single table element in the struture. If one want to do some xml-prosessing at row or cell level one need to to this outside indesign or not import CALS as Indesign tables. The big question is if there is some easy way to convert a CALS table to an Indesign table inside Indesign after one have imported the data and prosessed the row and cell elements...
Hope anyone knows more than me about this....

InDesign CS3 basic setting question

I just upgraded this weekend and cannot find the preference or setting that allows me to 'show all menu items' without having to click on them. Under every menu and sub-menu item there is an entry for 'show all menu items.' I'd like all the lists to be fully expanded if that is possible.

i want to ask, if the problem with the gifs in textfield
componennts still exist in cs3 flash professionell.
There was this problem if a textfield gets a text from a
shared object and have to put a gif instead of a text like " :-) "
then the gif file every time is in the next line instead of
in the postition where the ":-)" was.
Do you know ift this problem exist also in flash cs3 ??????

I have another old script I'm updating for CS3. This one uses the "Search" function and CS3 doesn't like it, what would be my best option to replace this line with since I'm not having very good luck with it?

Running Photoshop CS3 & CS5 - upgrade questions

Hi all,
So I understand that you can run both photoshop extended CS3 and CS5 on the same system (not at the same time), but I would like to clarify a few things.
My boss purchsed CS3 extended, and we run it on two systems here at work. When he purchased CS3 he called Adobe and they gave him a second CD key to use on the second system. If we purchase the upgrade to Photoshop Extended CS5 (not creative suite), will it
- not remove CS3 when we installed
- work on both systems
- will it require entering the CS3 CD key that each system uses, or will it just use the one already in use on the computer?

What do you mean "check what it is"? You're looking to see what the serial number it was activated with is? Are you saying you've lost that number?
There's a serial number displayed in the Help - System Info dialog, but it's not one and the same as the one used to activate the software. Adobe themselves may have some transform they can run on that number, I don't know.
