CS4 (6.0.3) indesign slow

...Especially undo, I often end up overshooting the number of undos I need.  the whole thing feels sluggish (i've just moved from CS2). Does graphics card effect performance? I'm on an XP32 box with a 2.7 Ghz core2 duo and "3.5 Gb of Ram" . (On "typical" display performance). Is this a "feature' or is it possible that I have an issue that can fix it?
examples: move a text box, hit undo, wait nearly 2 seconds to see the box move back again. Even zooming out I have to wait about half a second for the page to redraw.
Do you mind if I have a quick vent?
Is it too much to expect an upgrade will actually improve your basic user experience of a program?  Every one of more core adobe apps has been worse in CS4 than CS2.  Do I need to budget on replacing my computer every time I do A CS update?

I have a similar system with less RAM, and no performance issues at all.
How much open drive sapce do you have? Do you have hyperlinks or cross refes in the document? Id the file local or on a network? What about the links?

  • CS4 File info dialog very slow to open and respond.

CS4 File info dialog very slow to open and respond. Every click or or key stroke takes more than 1 second to record. I have try multiple changes in the performance preferences and nothing has an affect. This is the only dialog box in the program that has the problem. The problem started when I uninstalled and reinstalled because of problems with the program freezing. I have changed every setting in the preferences performance section back and forth including 3 different amounts of memory usage (lo hi and recommended) restarting PS every time and nothing works. I would appreciate any help, keeping in mind that there have been no changes to the PC and it worked fine for a long time (approx 1/12 years) previous to the reinstall. I've been having the same problem now for a few weeks and its killing me. Not sure what I can do, but in Photoshop and Bridge, the only programmes I use on a daily basis, it takes me forever to enter file information.

  • New CS4 links panel is very slow

I have 3200 links and using new CS4 links-panel is insanely slow. If I delete or update an image when links panel is open, I get the beachball for 10-15 seconds.
The beachball also rolls for many seconds when simply opening the links panel. Seriously slowing the workflow.
Tried to click off all info and thumbnails, no change.
This used to be a breeze in CS3.
Anyone else experience the same? I use MacBook Pro 2.4 Intel with 4 gigs ram.

Do you have any suggestions of what might be the problem?
I tried same document on CS3 and CS4, and CS4 has very slow links panel.
I have no trouble when there are just a few links, but I have 3200 links to maybe 15 different multipage PDF's. CS3 handled this perfectly.

  • CS4 InDesign Slow with files opened from shared drive

We have an issue that I can't seem to figure out...
I have six different people using Word files and InDesign files that are being opened from a server. When going from Word into InDesign (or vise verse) it takes a few seconds for the cursor to become active; however if the user is copying text from Word to any other Adobe product (Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark) no lag at all. They are also all getting a PDF creation failed when trying to save to the server (error is attatched).
It's  not a specific file because all six people have the same issue, and  they're all working on separate projects.
It's not machine specific since (again) all six Macs have the issue.
Obviously it's an InDesign issue, but what, and why all of a sudden?
Any  help would GREATLY be appreciated.

My first guess would be that the client OS version could be apart of it - small changes to the SMB client in 10.6 could explain it. I'd also be interested in looking at the firewall issue. It may well be a combination of both.
I think said earlier that working locally was not a problem, so you've already done the first logical test. Next, I'd think about trying the following, the order of which I'd base on their level of difficulty:
Temporarily put one of the problematic client machines inside the firewall (or the server outside of it, though I assume that would be harder/impossible)
Either upgrade one the of the problematic machines to 10.6.2, or create a Snow Leopard boot system with InDesign installed (on an external drive?) from which you can boot the machine
I'm sure getting rid of the firewall is not a long term solution, but it would be good to know for future reference whether the firewall is involved. Would upgrading to Snow Leopard be in the cards if it does seem to fix it?

  • Indesign slow with Bridge -Photoshop-Illustrator

    Hello there,
First, sorry for my english i'm French.
One of my collegue is experiencing  issue with CS6 indesign.
Installed in a PC with Intel core i7 370 2.93/2.93 gHZ, 16 GB RAM.
    Windows seven 64 bits.
Once he open a files of more than 10 Mb in Indisign and open in the same times Bridge or photoshop to integrate pictures or illustrator the PC get really slow and the users must wait several minutes to get the work done.
I never use myself The CS6 so I don't know if this behaviour is normal.
Before that the user was using CS4 and he did not have so much trouble with the same kind of files and he was doing the same work on it.
Beside the CS6, the unit has some standart software installed, Microsoft office 2003 and basically that's all except web navigator and some soft like cccleaner,VLC,Quicktime, nero burning room, kaspersky antivirus...
He never get any error message, or blue screen or whatever...microsoft and adobe updates are done.
All users in the services have the same hardware and software and this is the only one who had issue, the only difference is that he is working on bigger files.
I have ask him to try to work on the PC of his colllegue to check if issue appears to but he willbe able to do the test tomorow PM only.
When we have migrate from CS4 to CS6, I did not reinstall windows, just desinstalled CS4 and then install CS6.
I didn't use the CS cleaner tool....
Did someone knows where the issue can come from ? drive access or software related ?
It's busy timing for now so I don't want to reinstall all the PC and CS6 before knowing it will solved the issue.
    Thx a lot,
    Elisa

Is there any technical support when you buy CS6 ???
I mean our compagny had Cs4 before and now -  like there is no upgrade anymore-  we bought 9 complete CS6 license ( including 2 master) and no help from adobe ?
So basically:  adobe, it's we get your money we are happy if  you have issue,  we don't give a s**t !!!

  • Manage multiple versions(ID CS,CS2,CS3,CS4) of INDD files Indesign proxy for PC

    Dear scripters,
I have multiple version of ID installed in my system. I have ID CS,CS2,CS3 and CS4. While I am opening (double click) the ID CS file, automatically the file opening in CS4. For solving this problem I have searched in the forums I found there is a program called INDESIGN PROXY for MAC OSX. It manages the problems well.
Now I am in the process of developing the application same like that for windows using VB. Here is my observation about Indesign proxy.
    1. While user double clicks the Indesign file the argument is not passing to the Indesign.exe, but the argument passes to the Indesign proxy. Something like this
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS4\InDesign.exe" "%1"
    to this
    "C:\Program Files\IDproxy\proxy.exe" "%1"
    2. The proxy exe lists all the version of IDs in a dialog box. If user selects CS2, the proxy exe passes the command argument something like this
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS2\InDesign.exe" "%1"
    3. Now the file will open in correct version.
I am comfort with VB forums and coding but I am struck getting the file path while user double click's the file. I short need to get the file path of "%1" argument.
    I think I am detailed.
Kindly advice me how can I proceed more?
    Thanks
    regards

    I don't think it's a mistake.
    "InDesign CS4 (3.0)"
means: this is the OM for InDesign 3.0 (i.e., InDesign CS) that is contained in InDesign CS4.
Wait -- do you mean there might be a difference between "the OM for InDesign 4.0 (i.e., InDesign CS2) that is contained in InDesign CS4" and, say, "OM for InDesign 4.0 (i.e., InDesign CS2) that is contained in InDesign CS5" ?
Why on earth would anyone need that? I imagine it's not because even with versioning the 'older' scripts may not behave the same -- there must be dozens of mails about versioning not working ... I mean, if Adobe knows what causes older scripts to stop working (because, if I understand you correctly, they retroactively change it in the documentation for older versions), wouldn't it be yet easier to not cause those changes?

  • Premiere CS4 - Encoding with AME ridiculously slow

    Hello there.
After having read many threads on various forums, I have not come to a single hint as to why AME is encoding any type of video materal extremely slow. I'm sorry if this question has been asked many times on this forum, but maybe someone has come up with a working solution?
    My computer specifications are:
Windows Vista 32bit (yes I know, upgrade is needed)
    Intel Quad Core Q9000 @ 2 GHz
    4 GB RAM
    Nvidia GeForce 9700M GT - 512mb
    500GB sATA HDD @ 5400 rpm
This is a notebook. I use Premiere CS4 and AME4 with the most current updates (v4.1)
Here is what I usually do:
I export my project media from Premier to AME with the appropriate format and encoder settings, close Premiere and kill all background tasks. My RAM usage is now at around 1.4 GB (out of 3 GB!).
In this case, I'd use the built-in MPEG2 codec with PAL settings (720x576 - 25i - 8Mbit/sec), the source file is in MPEG4 @ 20Mbit and 10 minutes long. I started the encoding process and it was slowing down from 10 minutes initially to a frustrating render time of 60 minutes. Why?
I have used VirtualDub and TMPGEnc, both achieved, compared to AME, incredibly low render times, a bit higher than double realtime. When I use AME the same way, as encoder for an avi file only and not a Premiere project, it is losing by 6-7 times of the other programs render time.
    Second scenario:
I have 20 seconds uncompressed avi material (600Mbit/sec) and like to convert it to MPEG4 with AME. MPEG4 settings are at 50Mbit, I-frames only, 50fps and progressive. I started the encoding again and at first, AME was rushing through 1/4th of the progress bar in 5 seconds, and then slowing down to an overall encoding time of 50 (!) minutes and it ended about 52 minutes later.
During this rendering I had the windows resourcemonitor (of the taskmanager) open and checked the access rate to my hard disk. For the entire duration of 50 minutes, AME read between 50 megabyte and 125 megabyte per second on the hard disk. The file itself was less than 2 GB large - what on earth could it read? Also, my RAM usage came close to 2,8 GB but never reached 3 GB or higher.
Does anyone have an idea or is it just that freeware programs are superior to a costly AME?

I have already run that test about 4 hours prior to writing this thread. Now I'm not at this computer, but from top of my head the results were:
    Total 180 (about)
Export Avi 38 (not entirely certain, could be up to 10 higher)
Encode MPEG 90 (not entirely certain, could be 20 lower or higher)
Render Time 7 (the only number I recall correctly)
I'm well aware my hard disk isn't fast - but why should VirtualDub be able to encode a 2gb uncompressed avi clip with a duration of 20 seconds to DivX in about a 1/3rd real time/8fps (using 50mbit, i-frames and 50fps and amazing quality) while AME takes 50 minutes (1/200th realtime) for the same file with the integrated MPEG4 encoder?
Now, I know that those are different codecs, yet their data reduction works on a similar base. From my point of view, there's not much that could explain such a high discrepancy of performance on the hardware side, other than AME just does not like my computer configuration. I know my computer is very capable to perform way better than that, just with about any other program but AME, and that is a royal pain.
Unfortunately, I am unable to install a second HDD in this notebook, because it is full. I do know it could perform better using a secondary HDD, but I have also encoded files with Adobe Premiere CS3, and that performed way better than CS4 on the same computer.

  • Why is Indesign slow on OSX?

Ok so it isn't really slow but it sure feels like that coming from XP. I find the hand tool sluggish in Indesign and Illustrator on super fast macs which is disappointing. Why is this Adobe? And does snow leopard improve things a bit?

I noticed it on all kinds of macs and only with Adobe software. G5 quad core, Imac dual cores, macbook all running OSX tiger or leopard. Fast computers with modern hardware so I am pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. Its not that I find Illustrator or Indesign to be terribly slow but with complex documents screen redraw using the hand tool (and I use that all the time) AI or ID in OSX stutters a lot more than in XP which I find annoying when I'm working.
I actually started a thread about it on another forum and got some interesting somewhat surprising replies but not really one definite answer which probably only a Adobe programmer can provide. Sorry if I offended anyone by implying everyone here works for Adobe! ; )
    Here's the thread.

I found Shamyl Zakariya's answer very interesting.

  • Indesign slow on powerful PC?

    Hi
I just upgraded my PC. On my old PC indd was pretty fast. If I had to work with .ai's in high-res display mode in indd, it was laggy but not bad. However now, working with linked .ai's in high-res mode is down right painful. I'm using CS5.5.
    OLD PC:
    Quad Core 2.8
    8GB ram
    raid 1 C drive 10k disks
    Nvidia 8600gt w/256mb
    NEW PC:
    i7 6-core @ 3.33
    24GB ram
    crucial SSD's (no raid)
    evga 2win w/2GB ram
With my new PC I can render fast in Premiere Pro and STILL have plently of room to play with Photoshop at the same time. I am totally blown away that with the specs of my new PC that working in high-res mode in a simple layout program like indd is slow! The .ai files are B/W line drawings, no transparency or textures, or anything of any comlpexity.
Yes, I am (as I always do) working over a network. But since I can work on huge videos and photoshop over the network simultaneously, I don't see why it should be an issue for indd. Both my NAS and my PC have dual gigabit nics and I am LACP'ing though a procurve switch.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Paul

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Well, I'm sure you already know that InDesign is known to be touchy when working over a network, because otherwise your parenthetical comment
Yes, I am (as I always do) working over a network.
would be unnececssary. Also, I gather from this comment (emphasis mine):
Actually, I only added that because I expected people to say "it's a network issue". So I was emphasising that working of the network is normal for me. The only time I had issue working over a network was with Premiere Pro or AE on my old machine, but the network issue there was only marginal, since the CPU was pegging out.
In short, working over the network was never been an issue for me.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
For what it's worth, I've never seen Live Screen Draw work on any machine, ever, no matter how robust
Well, that tells me alot - maybe I was just expecting too much. I was so impressed with how Ppro and AE's performance improved, I thought well heck, INDD gots to be improved too! However, this still doesn't explain the "downgrade" feeling I am having in INDD.
My display driver is smack up to date, but yes, that doesn't mean it is flaw free. I'm using a gtx 460 (which is two cards in one).
I need to rule out that it is not the ai files though, so let me look there for a bit. As a final test, I may downgrade my display driver to see if there is any difference. I remember with my old cards at some point I had trouble and had to stay a few releases back, or I'd suffer.
    Thank you

  • CS4 Synchronize algorithm now painfully slow?

    Greetings People of Planet DWForum:
For a long time I was using DW8 on a Windows pc to edit my
site, which contains a total of about 2,000 files (mostly images).
Recently I became a pc ship-jumper and am now using a brand new
    fire-breathing 8-core Mac Pro and CS4.
On the old machine, I never thought much about the time it
took to publish changes. I would always Synchronize the Entire Site
after a Preview, and it only took a few seconds. I could make a
minor little change to one html file and publish it very quickly.
But now, it takes forever. When I Preview the
synchronization, about 40 seconds will elapse before the Background
File Activity dialog box starts to Check Files to See If They Are
Newer. Eventually it will list the one little file I changed, and
when I Put the file, the bottom left corner of the dialog box
flashes every filename in the web (I guess it's writing a log),
which takes another 30 seconds, and THEN it finally puts the stupid
    file.
So my question is.....what's up with this? Am I missing
something simple? My site definition is exactly the same...I have
chosen to Maintain Synchronization Information and check in/out is
disabled. This new machine is about 20 times more powerful than the
old one, so it can't be explained in terms of hardware. If it's
keeping synchronization info and check in/out is disabled, why the
heck does it even have to check every file to see if it is newer?
Is this just how it's going to be with CS4?
ok that's too many questions for one post. Any help or
insight that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
    - Gregg

    Hi all
    Thanks for all your contributions.
My W7 install was clean onto a brand new machine. The CS4 premium installer put everything where it wanted to, I didn't interfere. So PS is in the 64 bit apps, the rest are in 32 bit, all on the c drive which is a 250GB SSD. I only keep Windows and apps on that drive, so it has over 170GB free.
All docs are on my D drive, which is an internal SATA 2 drive, this includes all the images as well. That's a 1TB Hitachi 7200 rpm disk, so should be fine.
It is on an ethernet network, but it isn't accessing anything from within Indy over the network.
The weird thing is that initially after I installed MSE as my AV, everything seemed fine. But over the last 6 weeks it's just got progressively slower.
    It's baffling......

  • [CS4] Porting plugin from Indesign CS3 to CS4 c++ linking error

I am hoping to upgrade our current plugin to the latest version of Indesign CS4.
I've downloaded and unpacked the new Indesign CS4 SDK and have read the porting guide.  I've not seen anything obvious relating to this issue.
This is using Visual Studios 2005 SP1 with InDesignCS4ProductsSDK_Build578.
It appears that through the headers that I don't end up with any compile issues.  However in linking my current project is unable to find just a couple of external symbols.

Ian,  Thanks.  That did solve the K2Vector problems.
Are you aware of which .tpp covers the PMMatrix class?  That would probably make this linking error:

  • CS4 action panel really really slow!

Sorry if this issue was already posted, the search function
on this forum was not working at the time of writing this.
I just upgraded from Flash 8 to CS4, and the first thing I
noticed was how slow the action panel was compared to Flash 8. When
typing code into the action panel, there is a very annoying 1-2
second delay before it shows up. There is a noticeable delay in
selecting text as well. I thought I could get used to, but its been
a few weeks, and still driving me crazy.
I noticed there are documented performance issues with CS4
and the Ratheon 3200, but I have a Ratheon HD 3870.
Is there a way to speed up the action panel?
    Thank you

    what is Ratheon 3200?
it have nothing to do with your gpu
im thinking you are using athlon 3200, its not that new, but
CS4 takes a lot more system resource and computing power then flash
8, if you are using more then one core, assign one specific core
for flash, and nothing else uses that core.

  • CS4 Installs but then INdesign , Illustrator won't open

    Hello,
Can anyone offer me advice on this issue with CS4? My DVDs Install ok but when trying to open InDesign and Illustrator I get the message, 'sorry InDesign needs to close' I then send an error report to Microsoft - but the product didn't open at all to start with. Same happens with Illustrator, Flash etc. The only programs that will open are Photoshop and Fireworks (after reading other forum members problems with not even being able to install the program I kind of feel lucky for those small pluses!). I've spoken to Adobe support 5 times and reinstalled the product about 10 times after following their instructions.
I was using InDesign CS3 trial and had no problems with that (I did uninstall it and deactivate it before trying to install CS4).
I have all the required system requirement, 2 GIGs RAM, Window XP with service pack 3.
Owing to this I cannot go on with my class assignments now so it's pretty disappointing, but if anyone has any clues I'd be very grateful, thankyou,
    Allison

Thanks so much for your responses guys. I had a go at these sugestions, but nothing worked. Adobe phone support continued to offer patient support but nothing was working - anyway, as I was going to get a PC upgrade in the near future I went ahead and got it ahead of time on Monday - there was no problems with the install on this PC and all programs open up fine -( I've got a better graphics card etc and Windows Vista), kind regards, Allison

  • CS4 ExtendScriptToolkit Not showing InDesign CS4 in drop down

    Hi,
In Adobe CS4 ExtendScript Toolkit application, I am not getting the "InDesign CS4" in the dropdown.
What would be the cause for this? I have tried with reinstallling the InDesign CS4.
Please let me know If I am missing out something.
    Thanks

This is a notorious bug in CS4 that you can't do anything about. But if you run this line:
    #target indesign;
InDesign will reappear in the dropdown.

  • Indesign slow when editing remote documents

We're using an Indesign/Incopy webbased solution to write/edit our Indesign documents. All Indesign (Incopy) documents are on a remote database server. So when I open such an Indesign document, I basically download it from the remote location, edit it and when saving I upload it back to the server. There are no local Indesign/Incopy files. While testing we discovered that editing can be very slow. When placing a carriage return in a textfield for example, it can take a few seconds and meanwhile the Mac is showing it's rotating circle indicating that it's busy. It simple text edit can take a long time when the document contains a lot of high resolution psd documents.
Is there anything we can do to speed up this process. Apparently it is doing something to the remote Indesign (or auto recover) document while doing text edits. Some kind of upload seems necessary to those documents while doing the text edits. And as the Indesign document is quite large when containing a lot of psd documents these uploads during text edits can take quite a while. What could it be doing during such a text edit and can that process be turned off? So I can open (download) the Indesign document, do my edits while there are no uploads necessary, and finally save (upload) the document?

The recovery folder is the default one, locally on my IMac.
    The process is as follows.
I select an Indesign/Incopy document on the remote server to open it. It gets downloaded and opens like any normal document. Then I edit and when I save it, it gets uploaded again to the remote server. All Indesign documents there are stored in the third-party database.
When I open a large (many photos) document and do text edits, a simple text edit can take quite a few seconds. The macs 'busy' circle rotates. It's saving to the local recovery folder, so that couldn't be it.
But it looks like it is doing something to the remote third-party database indesign file during the text edit?
