[CS4] About timecode

I'm a little confused here about how timecode is displayed or even if it can be displayed short of some video effect helper tool or whatever.
I use a Sony (sd) VX2100 that shoots with miniDV and produces DV-avi capture clips.
Those clips are named with what I took to be timecode.  I used Scenalyser to capture so end up with clips like:
hp1'20100912 14.47.03.avi
hp1'20100912 14.51.12.avi
hp1'20100912 15.00.18.avi
hp1'20100912 15.09.26.avi
hp1'20100912 14.51.12.avi
hp1'20100912 15.00.18.avi
hp1'20100912 15.09.26.avi
I took the digits after the space to represent:
<b>mm.ss.frames</b>, and to be the <b>mm.ss.fr</b> when that clip started.
I also took the numbers that appear when a clip is in the source monitor (on the bottom left) to be timecode numbers.  But they don't match the filenames. A few may have the same number somewhere in the clip but mostly the number in monitor is nowhere close to the clip name.
Are those clip names derived from timecode?
Am I right to think the numbers on left bottom of source monitor is derived from timecode?
I hoped someone can tell me what I'm looking at.   Can I display the time code easily somehow?  I mean without trick effects or whatever... just whatever is embedded already in the clip, or is the source monitor it?

Stan Jones wrote:
I also use scenalyzer and have clip names like yours.  I love the convenience.
The beginning timecode in the source monitor window matches the time code in the clip name.
When you say "bottom left," there is a number (in my CS4 yellow orange) to the left side and just below the video window.  When the clip is opened, it matches the beginning and changes as appropriate to the timecode.  The number on the right is the length of the clip.
Do you mean the number on the source monitor when scrubbed all the way right should match the number in the file?
If so, that is what I thought was supposed to be the case but as you see in the screen grab, It is not holding true for me.
If I place a clip marker, this timecode also matches the timecode if I put the clip on the timeline and apply the timecode effect, with the timecode source set to "media."
I think we are talking about the same numbers on the source monitor but have included a screen grab showing the location.
But note in the screen shot that the file name in the source monitor has the name:
[...]18.34.34.avi    But the numbers on the source monitor are radically different:
[...]47;07;25
And that kind of wild difference is true on all the clips when displayed in source monitor.

• Question about TimeCode breaks

Hopefully the questions will get less!!
Having discovered the HV30 can shoot in both HDV and DV mode, I am now trying to capture the scenes, which is going well. However, my ref book goes into quite a bit of detail about the issues of "timecode breaks".
I purposefully added some breaks to the movie I shot, by simply stopping and starting, nothing else. Used the Capture Now feature. FCE was able to find these breaks ( DV Start/Stop Detect) without problems, so I wonder what it is that I am missing about the significance of this method. {Capture is being done from HV30, FCE 4.0, 10.5.2) using a 800f/w cable directly to a drive on the computer).
Thanks in advance.

I have worked out a solution for timecode breaks which is easy and relatively uncomplicated.
Background:
I recently borrowed by Father's Canon ZR700 mini-DV video camera. I have an older ZR200. Both are decent cameras, especially for the price. However, when I tried to import video from the ZR700 camera using FCE 3.5.1, I experienced breaks in the time-code which produced an unworkably slow process as FCE looked for timecode breaks.
Solution:
After some thought, I decided to use iMovie 06 to experiment with off-loading the video to DV and then "sharing" it back to "video camera" via mini-DV tape.
By using this transfer technique and employing the ZR200 camera as the "sharing" camera - which takes a little extra time and loses the original time code information - I was able to produce a tape which created a smooth and continuous import into FCE without timecode breaks.
I went on to experiment with this same process using the original ZR700 as the "sharing" camera, that is to say, I shared the DV back to the same tape from which the original video was extracted, and it worked fine.
Although I can't exactly explain why this works, I suspect that the timecode is placed in the video using a different route than the record head and FCE can see it.
Why the Canon ZR700 model exhibits such random and poor quality timecode quality is unclear. It may be this particular unit or for some other reason associated with the design or production quality. However, the older ZR200 camera is great and gives solid timecodes on all my videos.
Last note: I also used a record speed of LP versus SP when I "shared" in iMovie 06, even though the original video came from an SP tape. I can't see any difference except that the tape lasts longer.
WARNING: This technique loses - or appears to lose - the original recording information which is imprinted on the tape, including the date and time when the video was recorded. In order to re-create that information, I place a note into the video in iMovie 06 which states when (date and time) the video was taken. Some people care about this information, others don't.
Well, that's my solution to dropped or irregular timecodes. I would be interested to know if this technique works with other cameras.

• CS4 About installing the `Optional Plugins' 64 or 32 bit

Can anyone tell me from experience if when installing the `Optional Plugins' found in the `goodies' directory of install discs or from online sources by adobe, does it matter which  photoshop `plugins' directory you use, or do you need to drop them in both?
(I'm particularly interested in the contact sheet II plugin)
On 64 bit systems (Using CS4) you have one 64 bit version of PS and one 32 bit version.  Both have the dirctorires mentioned in the instructions found in:
`Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop Extended CS4 Read Me for Optional Plug-Ins, Extensions and Presets' *.pdf instructions.
But I don't see any mention of 64 or 32 bit in relation to placement of the `optional plugins'.

Hey Harry, I think he knows (Chris wrote part of the program).
I believe what Chris is saying is that:
1.  Only 32 bit plug-ins work with 32 bit Photoshop, and only 64 bit plug-ins work with 64 bit Photoshop.
2.  There are plug-ins in the package for each of the variants, 32 bit and 64 bit.
3.  The 32 bit plug-in(s) need to go under the install area for the 32 bit Photoshop, which is rooted at (on a 64 bit system):
         C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins
4.  The 64 bit plug-in(s) need to go under the install area for the 64 bit Photoshop:
         C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins
If you look in the PSCS5OptionalPlugins_Win_en_US.zip file it's pretty obvious which of these are in what subfolder (look for Win32 and Win64 subfolder names).
Note also that the ReadMeCS5_OptionalPlugin.pdf file in the base folder inside the zip file does give instructions.

• [CS4] About the Optional plugins for CS4

Once the optional plugins are installed as discussed in the pdfs that come with them.  In this case, the contact sheet plugin, into Photoshop plugins directory.
How is it then accessed inside photopshop?
I see a little note in the pdf saying that it is `optional' to add the plugin to the bridge scripts directory, but if not, then it must be possible to access that plugin from photshop, but I don't see it anywhere.
I put the contact sheet plugin at:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\Automate\ContactSheetII.8LI
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Plug-ins\Automate\
Putting the 64 and 32 bit plugins in the appropriate directories.
Where should I be looking inside PS?  Nothing appears under Filters

If the plugins are installed right, then they should be under File>Automate in photoshop.

• About timecode convert

My video footage is 25 fps and audio footage is 30fps,
video and audio timecode doesn't match. How can I convert audio timecode to 25fps ?
Is that any problems with different timecode format at FCP ?
Thanks!

actually, aiff's can have mysterious frame rates attached to them. And it can be inconsistent. Just had this experience with audio stems (aiffs) from a mix that was done at 23.986. We had a project with material that was both 29.97 and 23.986 and the stems came in with inconsistent frame rates (that is seen by the timecode associated with the files). Made me crazy (excuse me, crazier). didn't have time to check everything out on the workflow, but it seemed as the files imported in exactly the same way had different frame rates.

• Timecode in vision in CS4

I have a PAL 25fps clip that I want to export with timecode in vision.
When I add the timecode effect in prem CS4, the timecode is shown as 30fps drop frame.
The sequence is set up as 25fps, so can I change the effect's settings?
It all worked very well in CS3!
Thanks in advance.
Chris

The timecode effect can display timecode from three different sources. See
Timecode effect in the PPro CS4 Help.

• Export .wav file on Mac in CS4

i want to increase the volume of my source file great then
100%. I don't believe it is possible to do this within CS4, so I'd
like to export the .wav file and edit it in another application. I
am working on a Mac and I don't have the option to export sound
files in the .wav format. Any recommendations?

If you're talking about timecode stamping in a WAV file exported from STP . . . well it doesn't seem to work for me no matter what timecode rate I use. 29DF, 29, 24, 23. I suspect you need to either give them the timecode location manually or export the whole thing, and let them just punch in the section they need.

• Some oddities in Dreamweaver CS4

After using Dreamweaver 8 for years I just upgraded to CS4 version. I have noticed a few strange things, not enough yet to pinpoint exactly how or why the occur. Can't reproduce the problems.
Control-C and Control-X in either design or code view copies/delets files and not text. Have to exit and restart DW to get the proper behavior
I have a nice selection (i.e., the ones I most want) of icons docked. I use Files to switch sites (which I do a lot), and they all disappear except for Files. Again. I have to exit and restart.
The visual representation - even in very smple layouts - can be totally bizarre and totally wrong. Everything is ok actually previewing in any of the browsers, This is especially true of layouts inprted from Fireworks. It also makes it hard to edit the layout.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Or am I just the luck one?
Thanks for the feedback
Barry Doherty

I installed CS4 about 2 months ago. I think all these behaviors have been present from the start. Where I haven't been able to find a patter in how or when they occur, that's hard to answer.
With respect to FW - the display errors occur on import into DW. I had assumed the FW CSS was passable. I could see where editing it could cause problems, but haven’t gotten that far. Just had to re-do the layout in DW.

• How can I prevent my Camera Archive import from being interrupted by timecode breaks?

I'm trying to create Camera Archives from my old mini-dv tapes. I have a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV22 connected via FireWire. When I start the Camera Archive import process, everything is fine for a while but then the process stops with a message about a break in the timecode preventing the archiving from completing.
Solutions to this problem I've seen online relied on changing import preferences in Final Cut 7. Unfortunately, I only have Final Cut Pro X and I'm not sure how to control this setting.
I don't really care about timecodes, I just want to dump the entire tape to disk so I have a backup of the tape but the timecode break is interrupting the process and making me get involved a lot more often during the import process.
Does anyone know how to force Final Cut Pro X to push through timecode breaks in a Camera Archive import?

To clarify, this problem is not simply making me get involved more, but is preventing the Camera Archive operation from completing.

• BUG: Adding guide randomly changes resolution to 4,000+ dpi and width to 1.111"(CS4)

Bizarre bug, wondering if anyone has encountered this and if anyone please has any insight.
Upgraded to CS4 about a month ago, and in the last few weeks have discovered a major bug. I'm working in some 300 dpi files, and was confounded when I realized several of them were suddenly over 4,000 dpi and had all been rescaled to 1.111" wide.
Just now, I discovered when: I was dragging in a guide, when all of a sudden I noticed the ruler on the side jumped in, and the file was now 1.111". I was unable to undo it, as previous steps stayed at the same scale. Also, it doesn't happen every time I drag in a guide, just randomly. And it doesn't seem to happen in every file either.
I've found that if I divide the resolution by 300 and then multiply the width by the result, the file returns to its proper dimensions. Still, this is totally bizarre behavior.
Please help me!

The current version of Photoshop is 11.0.1.  You need to update your copy ASAP.
Your OS is also out of date.  Update to 10.6.3 by applying the Combo 10.6.3 update rather than the incremental update performed by Software Update.

• Help with PS CS4 for Mac (Lion 10.7.3)

I bought Photoshop CS4 about a year and a half ago and it worked on my old Macbook (10.5.8) absolutely fine. I recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro (Lion 10.7.3) and now Photoshop crashes about every ten minutes for no apparent reason. By "crashes" I mean that the spinning wait cursor appears and I am forced to use force quit as Photoshop is no longer responding.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, turned off automatic graphics switching (I read on a similar discussion that this might help) and nothing seems to work. It's very very frustrating, made more frustrating by the fact that neither Apple or Adobe seem to be able to speak to me in person about this matter. I desperately need Photoshop for my work and any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Color profile problem after installing CS4

OK.
First, let me post these side-by-side comparisons:
As you can see in Image 1 (the "before," left-side photo in each comparison), the colors and overall appearance are distorted. I've read things about gamma but it's all confusing to me. This is surely a color profile problem, right? The transition among pixels that involve colors of yellow and gray is rocky, grainy, and the flat out color is just wrong. Now this color problem affects pictures when opened in both Photoshop 7.0 and the standard Windows Photo Viewer. Meaning, whenever I open pictures in both PS 7.0 and Windows Photo Viewer (my default viewer), this color problem totally messes up certain photos and really damages my ability to edit. I'm an avid photo editor and it's imperative I have proper color display so that I can accurately edit. Keep in mind that certain pictures do not take on this error. When a photo is generally brighter, the distortion is basically invisible. It's photos that are dark or have dark portions in them that display the distortion.
*Note: I took these before-and-after pictures with my camera, because screencapping would not work, since you all don't have the same color profile issue on your computer. That's the only way I can show you!
HOWEVER, when I open photos in another standard Windows application, "Microsoft Office Picture Manager," the color problem is magically erradicated altogether. It shows photos as I've been seeing them all along, until I installed CS4 about two weeks ago. Before installing CS4, everything was fine and I had been using Photoshop 7 for years and have never had a problem. I'm guessing CS4 messed something up. It had to have. Just FYI, I uninstalled CS4, hoping it would reverse the problem. But still, the color issue persists in PS 7 and in my regular Windows Photo Viewer.
Since images display their true form in Windows Office Picture Manager, I don't think I need to calibrate my screen. Or do I? I've read things about it, and to some people, it's not necessary. Right? Okay. I really hope someone can give some advice! Thank you!
P.S. Here's the original photo. On my screen, it looks distorted when opened in photoshop or opened w/the viewer. However, here on Firefox, it's fine.

You should try to familiarize yourself with the concepts of color management.
It's kind of too in-depth a subject to walk you through from a cold start here...  There are a lot of good resources out there to help you get started.  For example, in just a few seconds Google turned up this:
http://www.adobepress.com/articles/article.asp?p=1315593
The one thing to remember is this:  There is NO quick solution, easy set of defaults, or direct answer to making your setup do what you want without your having to understand color management.
People may tell you to calibrate your monitors, or use a particular color profile as a default, or whatever, and they may have good, solid reasons for telling you those things, but if you don't attempt to get your mind around color management it will always seem as though something isn't working right, or is simply magic, which will be frustrating to you.
Here are some basic questions to ponder:
What image color profile is your image carrying?
Is your monitor a wide-gamut display and do you have a color profile set up for it?  What kind of monitor is it?
What version of Windows are you running?
Do you know the difference between a color-managed app and one that is not color-managed?
Which of the apps you're using/showing above are color-managed?
What are your settings in Edit - Color Settings?
Take some time and do some research, get your head around the concepts, and it will all make more sense I promise you.
