CS4 auto page insert: master page frame or not

In CS4 the preferences for auto page insert allow to turn off 'limit to master pages'.
However, don't see much difference wether it is on or off. The Help file states that if you do NOT use master text frames, a new textframe should be inserted, one column between the margins.
Can not get this to work when limit to master pages is off. What am I misreading...?
(It is funny sometimes: I have 'delete empty pages' checked (it is on). Now make a document 3 pages long. OK, now draw a empty text frame on page one. Do the same on page 2.
Now connect both text frames: page 2 disappears. This is to be expected but be aware of this.
Now insert text in the textframe on page one that does not fit totally in this textframe: overset symbol appears.
Now where is page 2 that was 'auto deleted' and had the threaded text frame?
Nope, it does NOT appear again!
I admit I still have to get to grip with this, so what DOES the switch 'limit to master pages' on/off have for effect...)

Yes, I know. But maybe my point came over the wrong way. If you have auto page delete on, you have three pages and a textframe that spans page 1 and 2, but not yet text in it, and you connect the empty text frames, page 2 will disappear. Now fill page one with overset, page 2 won't do anything because it needs two pages.
Disable auto page delete and it will work.
Just wondering why it was designed this way, that's all ;-)

  • Insert master column on table not found in NW CE EHP1

I installed SAP Netweaver CE EHP1 sneak preview. I inserted the table UI element. I am trying to insert a master column in the table. But I was not able to find the option to insert master column from the context menu of the table in NW CE EHP1 sneak preview. I was able to do it with previous versions. I am not sure whether it is a bug on this version. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

Go to Context Menu of the table and select to insert Row arrangement then you see tree by nesting table column.

  • Create auto page alphabets inlieu of numberings on masterpages

    Hello,
Is there a way to create auto page letters and not numbering in Indesign on master pages. I know under special characters > markers > next page number, automatically produced numbers but would like to use alphabets.
If anyone knows of a way to do this, please share.
    Thanks!

No, not a section marker. There's a dropdown in the dialog marked "Style." That's where you set letters vs. numbers.

  • InDesign auto-size frame feature not working in real time in InCopy why?

We have just recently migrated from InCopy CS4 to CS6 to take advantage of the new features like the auto resize frame option, however it now seems that this feature is not working in real-time.
Basically the steps are needed to be complete before it auto-resizes the frame in InCopy, we use both layout and assignment based workflows:
    1. From an ID document ('doc1'), exported a 'layer' to IC, certain frames are set to auto-size in height using the text frame options. So that editorial can review and make changes to text and the frame should resize according to the specifications set. IC stories are saved to a folder located in a content folder inside the top issue working folder.
    2. Editorial opens the IC software, then opens the ID 'doc1'. Check’s out correct .icml file and makes edits to frame with auto resize.
    3. Frame does not resize according to text frame set options and InCopy file does not respond in same fashion as InDesign.
    4. Change only occurs when InCopy file is closed and updated in InDesign, which is frustrating as this feature would save huge amounts of time serving editorial requests.
Has anybody experienced this type of workflow problem? If anyone can provide mw with some pointers as to what can I do to get this to update in real time perhaps run a script? Update file in InCopy and refresh I will very much appreciate their assistance. I have run out of ideas.
    Thanks!

We've had all sorts of problems with this feature as it should've worked straight out of the box but after some testing we have found that its something to do with the way you open the actual file in InCopy. Which is far from ideal and should have been UAT by Adobe before release.
This will not work consistently work if you open the designed .indd or .icma file in InCopy using the file open command within the application.
If you need this to work, the InCopy user has to open the .indd or .icma file by dragging and droping from OS windows explorer into InCopy, we use Windows 7 acrros all the teams. Check out .icml files add text changes to the set auto resized frames, this process will expand/collapse the frames to fit the content but as you have to use the drag and drop method to open the .indd and .icma file, 2 users cannot access the same time doc at the same time (a serious flaw in the programming architecture!) which stops people working in parallel. Save changes, check in .icml content and close .indd or .icma.
However the flaw comes in if you then open the .indd and .icma file in InCopy using the file open command within the application, before an InDesign user opens and saves the file (updates the design). The corrections added in the previous stage above, will not show the frames expanded/collapsed to take in the added text and instead show over matter???? The only way around this is to ask an InDesign user to open, update and save the design that way the InCopy user will see the same result no matter what file open method they use.
Another suggestion is to design the page to have some of the auto resize frames anchored within main body of text and that way the frames will expland/collapse when checking out and editing the content. However, this does cause issues with InDesign crashing etc. so we have tried to stop this method within the working group.
Have you experienced other more serious issues with InDesign crashing consistently when re-importing .icml files? See other forums here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/671820?start=80&tstart=0
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/5045608#5045608
As far as we can see this is a major flaw in how the application(s) work, we have an enterprise agreement with Adobe and purchase a large volume of Adobe products globally but so far the technical support team are unable to find a solution to this and I'm not hopeful of any resolution soon even with the new release of Adobe CC.

  • Some pages use master text frame, others don't. Fix?

It turns out in my document, some of my pages have a master text frame and others don't. Many don't. It must be the way I created the frames, accidentally creating independent frames. Is there a fool proof way not to accieentally create independent frames and is there a good way to make sure all these pages with independent frames are turned back into master text frames?
What I can do is delete the independent frame, then link the previous frame to the inside of the master text frame (I think I used to drop the link on a ruler too often and that creates an independent frame that is in most cases indistinguishable from a master text frame). This is tedious to do for the entire document. Is there an easier way?

It sounds like you understand what happened. Clicking the place gun cusror on any type of guide will ignore your master frames. Overriding a master text frame before placing the text and Shift-clicking in the overridden frame will also ignore the master frames on subsequent pages.
The bes thing you can do is keep your eyse open to watch the shape of the cursor. If ID is going to use an existing frame the cursor will be surrounded by parentheses and a new frame will use a cursor with a square upper left corner. You should also develop the habit of clicking in empty areas away from guides if you are using existing frames -- you don't need to click at the top of these frames.
It's also possible that you did everything correctly and you are working in a facing pages file and at some point added or deleted a single page somewhere other than the end. That would cause all following pages to switch sides and master objects would be reapplied behind any overridden frames.
There is no easy way to deal with extra frames. If they are not causing a problem you may be able to simply ignore them.

  • Master pages do no display auto page numbering

This is strange. I set up auto page numbering on the master pages and the document pages display the page numbers correctly. But later on I thought the page numbers were too large so I went to the master pages to change the size and there's nothing. Thinking the page numbers were hidden from view or somehow were white in color (i.e, they were there but weren't being displayed) I chose Select All but still nothing.

    You're a genius. Happy Thanksgiving.

  • Cross-reference auto-page numers?

Can anyone tell me why i cannot get cross-references to work with  automatic page numbering?  Is there some fundamental error i am  making?  I have the master files setup with auto-page numbering based on  'current page.'  All of my pages are numbered sequentially as 1, 2, 3,  etc. and setup with a unique paragraph style.  however, when i try to  reference a page number in the document, none of the pages show up under  the paragraph style in the cross-reference menu.  I have even tried to  use ctrl+shft+click on the desired reference page to bring the page number frame  from the master file onto that specific page, but the text still does  not show up in the cross-references menu.  I feel as though i must be  making some sort of mistake because it seems this could be one of the  more obvious/widespread uses for the cross-reference feature.  Any help  would be great.  Perhaps there is simply another way to do  this?  Thanks!

    Peter,
I understand that this is probably a more specific use of the feature, no doubt.  It is ultimately unrealistic to expect a program to work exactly as each individual user's project approach dictates.  I dont take the comment as a slam, dont fret.
My confusion and concern ultimately stems from the fact that, on the surface (granted, I am definitely not a programmer ), it seems like the ability to directly reference the page number would be, almost inherently, already built-in in the sense that the page number is recognized as a product of content placement.  In other words, if the cross-reference knows that changes to the document composition have caused my referenced content to move from auto-numbered page 36 to auto-numbered page 37, yet the reference cannot exist to simply the page number itself.  It has to exist via the content on taht page.  Hopefully I have provided and explanation which makes sense!
In all honesty, the ability to reference only content and not also page number is only goingot set me back about half.  For my sake, I have a 300 page document which includes hundreds of figures/illustrations, all of which correspond to text explanations in a different part of the document.  Over time, it is anticipated that standards and graphics will be added/subtracted/changed, and therefore, so will the section numbering, page numbering, figure numbering, and the corresponding pages on which all of these pieces of info will occur.  We would like to correspond figures and sections to one number; in this case, the page.  Because each figure/illustration will have it's own page, it is desired to make the figure number and page number match to achieve an easier means of navigating the book.  Basically, I want the text section, which will be read first, to reference figure numbers and/or page numbers (at this point, i have the option of choosing one or the other), but both of these numbers are going to dynamically update.
So, if that made any sense at all (ha), is there a way to use the cross references to point at a number that is set to automatically/dynamically change?  If there is not, then perhaps I will simply have to create static figure numbers for the referenced content and then just let the page numbers change over time.  If you have any other suggestions, I am definitely open to exploring them!
    Thanks for the continued help!

    Hi, Garrett:
If I understand your description correctly, it seems that you're asking for an unusual numbering/navigation approach. Is there an example that you've seen that works this way, and that you want to emulate? Is this a publishing style/convention in the particular industry?
Am I correct in imagining that in a document that contains three figures on discontiguous pages, they might be numbered something like this:
    Page #
    Figure #
    1
    1
    15
    15
    250
    250
This would result in no figures 2, 3...14...249. Would your document have references to figure 15 on page 15? Would you want your list of figures (LOF) to resemble:
    Figure  number and title                                                     Page
       1.  Example of the widget in question .............................    1
    15.  Example of another widget .........................................  15
(sorry about the messy table layout - the HTML is tricky)
Would your audience be concerned that the figure numbers are not consecutive across a multi-chapter book, or consecutive within a chapter, and restart in each chapter? That is, would a reader think that some figures are missing?
Is there a specific objection to figure 11 on page 26 becoming figure 11 on page 28, if text content were inserted, or becoming figure 16 on page 29 if figures were inserted? When numbered-list paragraph styles and cross-reference formats are set up properly, cross-references to these figures would update to indicate both the correct number and correct page.
    Have I misunderstood something?
    [EDIT]
I forgot to ask if your document will be using cross-references interactively in a PDF or other multimedia format. If so, can you give more detail on your expectations?
Have you looked into InDesign hyperlinks? They can refer to a page number - either "sticking" to the designated page no matter if its page number changes because of reflow or being moved, or "sticking" to whatever happens to become the "n-th" page if the original page is relocated. Search Help for Create a hyperlink to a page.

  • Auto Page Number Change Font or Delete?

After translation from Word to Pages, the auto page number font causes the third digit of the page number to appear outside margin of header.  How can I change font or delete and put in new page number?

Usually the page numbering from Word are have objects that are not selectable. That is until you have made them selectable by going  Arrange > Make background object selectable. You might need to go Format > Advanced > Make Master object selectable  too.
Delete them and use Pages version instead, Insert > Page Number

  • Why is there a thick line in the page margin when I use auto page number?

I am having a problem with an automatic line which appears in the left, in the page margin, outside the footer whenever I insert auto page numbering into a booklet. This line looks like a thick "l" and is on the left of each page despite the numbers being on the 'outside' (alternate sides) of each page.
The line only disappears when the numbers are removed. I cannot highlight/edit the line and they show up as short thick marks, the height of the font on each numbered page when the document is printed.
Does anyone know how I can get rid of them?

    Thank you, fruhulda.
Actually that is what I am doing as a workaround. It works but it requires me to make an unnecessary extra copy of the document. And after doing that, I sometimes carelessly keep working on the copy instead of the original, which results in untracked modifications. So I hope there should be a way to just hide the lines.
If there's no option to hide them, I think this is a bug of "View Final" mode, in which the document should be viewed in the "final" form.

  • CS4 editable master text frames in CS5 no longer editable

    Hi,
Problem: Text frames on CS4 document pages (from locked text frames on masterpage) are no longer editable on CS5 document pages.
    CS4 situation:
Masterpages contain text frames which are locked to prevent users from inadvertently moving them when working on document pages.
On document pages, the text frames can be edited, i.e. text entered, but are position-locked.
    CS5 problem:
When you now open the same document, the text frames on the document pages are totally locked, the positioning as well as the content. This means they are no longer editable! The only way I have found to make them editable once again is to unlock the text frames. But unlocking also removes the position lock.
What do I have to do to get things working in CS5 like they were in CS4? Any quick solution or is this simply no longer possible?
    Confounded by InDesign once again...

Yes, it works just like in CS4! Wunderbar!
As I just had some trouble finding the where to change this setting,
for anyone working with the German version of InDesign CS5:
Menü: Bearbeiten > Voreinstellungen > Allgemein
then under "Objektbearbeitung", remove the checkmark from "Auswahl von gesperrten Objekten verhindern"
    Thanks!

/:           POSITION XORIGIN '0.50' CM YORIGIN '7.75' CM

    /:           BOX  FRAME 10 TW
when i run the program first page are coming properly and only when i go in second page of output then main window lines not displaying.
please guide me how to solve this problem.
    Regards,
    pravin

    Hi Praveen,
In that case why you have to make the main window in the first page and secondry window.
You can use it as manin window itself. Print the total amount in the main window itself in the first page. and copy that main window to the second page.
In the first page under the main window create a text. and there u print the total value and text.
Now copy the main window to the second page..only COPY DONT CREATE NEW.
In the second page now under the main window create the table to print the line items. What every u add in the second page main window it will come in the first age also in the smartforms. But it will nto get printed in the first page. After the text to print the totals call the COMMAND option and call next page in that.
    Hope you got me..

  • Auto Page Number Disappears

I'm using the "Page n of m" custom library object on one of my forms. After saving the form in Designer, I open it up in Acrobat 7.0 Pro or Reader 7.0. The page numbers are displayed as expected.
After inputting information in and on exit from any field on the form, the page numbers disappear. The only way the page numbers reappear is if a dynamic field causes the document to repaginate.
Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it so that the page numbers are always visible? I've tried it on several documents and it always does the same thing. Very frustrating!
WinXP; using Adobe Livecycle Designer 7.0, Acrobat 7.0 Pro and Reader 7.0.

I use the same program version and I don't have this problems.
I have the auto page numbers on the format page.
If this doesn't work, maybe you can try to change the page numbers initialization at the event initialize, or put it on the calculate event.
I don't know if this can help you! I hope so!
