CS4 banding, pixelated images

Up until just a few hours ago, Photoshop CS4 was working fine - out of nowhere I began to notice an extreme and "step" banding around soft brushes and gradients where any imaged placed on the canvas was instantly pixelated.
The settings were RGB 8-bit 300dpi on a 600x600p canvas, I am almost certain it isn't my screen as I can see gradients in other programs (fireworks, as well as all internet browsers). I almost always work under these settings and have never experienced a problem like this, I've reset my preferences, switched between modes, and I've never has access to my GPU settings in PS so that can't be it. I should also note that it is visible when printed.
I've even updated CS4, what can I do to fix this.

function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}

I'm not seeing excessive banding in the image you posted.  No more than should be expected for an 8 bit grayscale image.  That actually eliminates a lot of suspects.
That leads me to wonder if it's your monitor settings or video card.
Have you rebooted since seeing this problem?
What's changed since it worked?
How many bands do you see in this image:
Does the following seem smoother than what you see?

  • Graphics2D.scale() producing pixelated images from vectors

I have a set of JPanels that I am using in my game to display the interface. Each one overrides paintComponent() and draws itself using Java2D. That all works great -- you can zoom in, move around, etc. and it all looks very nice and uses affine transformations.
I'm trying to produce very high resolution images from this interface (for use on a poster) and using scale() is creating pixelated images rather than nice, high res images of the vector data.
    My code works as follows:
1.) Create an instance of the interface using some saved game state data.
    2.) Create a Graphics2D object from a BufferedImage object.
3.) Scale the Graphics2D object so that the interface will fill the entire image (in my test cases, the interface is running at 800x600 normally, and the resulting image is going to be 3200x1600, so a 4x scale).
4.) Call the interface's paint method on the Graphics2D object. Note that all of the paint methods are using calls to fill... and draw...; nothing is getting rasterized in my code.
5.) Write out the image object to a file (PNG).
A sample of the output is here:
    http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w174/toupsz/ScreenShot2007-04-24_11-45-35_-0500.png
The white circle in the upper left hand corner is drawn in between steps 4 and 5. It actually looks correct.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is it a deficiency in Java itself? Is there some way to fix it?
Any help would be most appreciated!
    Thanks!

Try setting a few hints on your Graphics2D:
    g.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_INTERPOLATION, RenderingHints.VALUE_INTERPOLATION_BICUBIC);
    g.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_ANTIALIASING, RenderingHints.VALUE_ANTIALIAS_ON);
    g.setRenderingHint(RenderingHints.KEY_TEXT_ANTIALIASING, RenderingHints.VALUE_TEXT_ANTIALIAS_ON);

Hi!!! I have an iPhone 6, 64GB capacity. All the iOS updates are the latest ones. I'm getting pixelated images on instagram, pinterest and even the icons on the app store, I have tried to turn it of and off but it doesn't seems to work... any idea??.

    Hi alex_h1!!!
i'm posting some of the images that are pixelated, I haven't  noticed but that includes safari too... Here are some screenshots! I thought maybe it was the internet speed but the same thing happens even on wi-fi .
    Thanks!!!

    What's the fix?
Tried reset, restart, reboot, reopen of apps same problem

What do you mean by reboot? Do you mean restore? Because if you haven't restored, then that's the next step. You'll need a computer with the latest version of iTunes and a USB connector.

  • Pixelated images while playing back a video shot on my iPhone4s

Shot a video of my kid playing soccer and when watching on playback mode on either iphoto or imovie it comes out all pixelated images...

The size of the hard drive that the OS resides upon is not of concern as long as it has enough space for you operating system, the applications and a swap file.
The reason you NEED to keep you media files on a second drive is that it is TOO MUCH to ask of one drive to deal with all the system level read/writes AND to also seek, find and play all your audio AND video AND renders AND graphics and who knows what else you've got going.
to get the best possible playback.
    1. Run Diskwarrior and Disk Utilities to make sure the files/directories are clean.
2 Disconect the system from any network.
    3. Turn off any screen, power, disk power savers
    4.Make the file self-contained
    5. Have ONLY the external drive that the media resides upon connected through the firewire bus.
6.Shut down and reboot the machine before you start.
    7. Pray.

  • Pixelated images in safari, please help.

    Hi everyone,
Hoping someone can help me with a issue i have with my new macbook pro.
When browsing the net, safari and firefox show really pixelated images. I thought it might be my internet connection compressing data or something, but i have tried other computers on the same internet connection and the images show perfect...
So this makes me think its the macbook. I have upgraded snow leopard from 10.6 to 10.6.2 and updated safari, but unfortunately this didnt help my problem. So now i have ended up here, asking you people, coz im out of ideas.
I will include some screen shots so you can see exactly what i mean.
Notice the bad quality images and even on google's banner it is pixelated heaps...

Yes, I see the big ugly squares. They are what appears whenever extremely heavy JPEG compression is applied to a low-resolution image tht has relatively large areas of similar colors. Something somewhere is applying such compression to the pages, or portions of them, that you are viewing in your browser(s). Your MBP is not doing that: it can't. Either the page images (or parts of them) are being compressed by the website owners or, if every web page is affected, they are being compressed by your ISP in the process of being transmitted to you, as Gordito suggests. That would greatly increase the speed of page loading, but at the expense of image quality. You wouldn't see the image degradation on an iPhone or cell phone — the screen is too small — but on the MBP's high-resolution display it would be much more apparent, IF the MBP were receiving the signal in the same highly compressed form as the phone. If the MBP receives the same web pages through an ISP that doesn't over-compress them, they'll look the way they ought to look. So if you are receiving these web pages through a cellular ISP rather than through a broadband connection, take the MBP to a wifi hotspot and connect through wifi instead. I bet things will look different then.
Compressing images is something a web browser can't do: a browser just displays the signal that comes to it.

  • Photoshop CS6 (vs 13.0.1) Severely pixelated images

I have a iMac, running OS X Yosemite 10.0.1.   Almost every time I open any files (RAW or Jpeg) I get  severely pixelated images. I'm going from bridge to ACR to Photoshop or browser to Photoshop. it's intermittent. But extremely often.  I can close the file and open it and sometimes it's just perfectly fine and sometimes it happens again.  Any advice would be great.  I keep all of my images on an external hard drive.  I have 8 GB of RAM. All programs uptp date.

Or, more likely, it's just the known video driver bugs in MacOS 10.10.
Apple is aware of the video driver bugs and working on a solution.
Until Apple can release a solution, you can disable GPU drawing in Photoshop's preferences and restart the app.
If you really need the GPU features in Photoshop, you may want to consider downgrading to a more stable version of MacOS.

  • Officejet Pro 8500 and Adobe Photoshop CS4 64 bits Image Size Problem

I have a Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits desktop computer. After installing the Officejet Pro 8500 multifunctional drivers all was working OK. Images were being printed nice and with the correct size using Windows print option. After installing Adobe CS4 suite, all images printed from windows or Photoshop have incorrect size (photoshop prints it smaller and windows prints it larger).
I've installed all photoshop patches and re-install Officejet 8500 drivers, but the problem persists.
I've also tried to make a clean installation of the whole computer from the beginning
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? What would be the windows/HP files that were changed by Photoshop?
    Thank you.

I'm on the phone with HP tech support about this problem. He said he's gonna charge me to fix the problem and than he put me on hold. I'm waiting to find out how much money I've saved. You put some dollars in my pocket. Thanks!!!!!!

  • DNGs display as 256x192 pixel images

I picked up Aperture last night and installed the 1.5 update this morning. I imported a directory of DNG files (originally created using an Olympus E-500), and the files display as 256x192 pixel images. ACR correctly displays them as 3264x2448 pixel images. I flipped through the documentation and forums but didn't see any potential fixes. Aperture insists that the previews are up to date.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Andreas
    MacBook Pro 2.0 GHz Mac OS X (10.4) 10.4.8

Apple's Aperture pages state that "DNG files must be generated by the Adobe DNG Converter, with the "Convert to Linear Image" option turned off, and created from RAW formats that are otherwise already supported by Mac OS X 10.4.3 or later."
I followed those instructions to the letter in that I created the DNGs from E-500 raw files using Adobe's DNG Converter with that option disabled.
Perhaps Aperture is grabbing the embedded JPEG preview?
    Cheers,
    Andreas

  • Difference between CS3 and CS4 when placing images, percentage not kept

There is some kind of difference between CS3 and CS4 when placing images. The images I've dealt with right now were vector images but it might apply to all kinds of images.
When replacing an existing image, the CS4 behaviour is to let the image fill up the frame. In CS3 the percentage was set to 100% as default (the % you see when selecting the image, not the container).
Also when replacing an impage in CS4, the "inner" image frame is kept, while in C3, the percentage was kept.
Is there some kind of placement preferences / settings to let CS4 act the same wat as CS3 did, when placing an image?
    -- Andreas

Yes, the behavior was changed in CS4 (and many users, like me, prefer the new system).
If you click and drag a loaded image place cursor the entire image will be be scaled to fit the proportionally drawn frame -- a huge timesaver if you mostly place uncropped art. If you want 100% of the image at 100% scale, just click and release -- same as before, or as before you can pre-draw a frame and place into it and your image will come in cropped at 100% (unless you've changed the fitting options for the frame before placing).

  • PS CS4 - Vertical Poster Image Appears Square - Why?

I just installed CS4 on Monday. I've been working with Photoshop 7.
I work in a theatre and create a lot of vertical images -- posters, brochures, etc. They all appear square when I open them.
In the View menu, there is not a checkmark next to Pixel Aspect Ratio, and Pixel Aspect Ratio Correction is grayed out.
Under Pixel Aspect Ratio, Square is checked, but I am not able to uncheck it without selecting something else.
Under Advanced, the Pixel Aspect Ratio is set to Square Pixels.
Per the moderator at the Adobe Help forum, I tried deleting the preference files by holding Ctrl+Alt+Shift just after starting Photoshop. No change.
Here are screen shots of my View settings and my image size menu.
I'm a total newby at this CS4 software. Please help if you can!

Check your hardware acceleration options in the performance section of the prefs. Turn off hardware accel. Quite possible, that it distorts the texture buffer due to a misconfiguration in your graphics card's driver. In the medium run, rectify it by experimenting with the driver settings. and of course follow the others' advise....

  • CS4 very slow image linking.

We are having a efficiency issues with CS4.
We have a large IDML document with 80 pages and 1800 images. Each image is about 24kb jpg.
If we open the document and InDesign can find images, it will take hours to open the document. And it is very annoying that InDesign stops responding and doesn't show even a progressbar while opening the document.
If we open the document and InDesign cannot find images, it will open the document in few minutes. Then if we fix the location of images and say "Update all links" or "Relink" broken links, InDesign will start fetching the images but it again takes hours..
It doesn't matter if the images are on the server or local machine.
If we update the links in smaller chunks, it will take a few minutes to update all the links. Little more testing shows that the time the InDesign takes to fetch the images increases exponentially when the amount of images increases. That seems a bug to me.
I'm not sure what InDesign is doing when it fetches images but I know it becomes way too slow and it propably does too much.
Is this fixed in CS5? And if not, please fix this.
We are running CS4 InDesign 6.0.6 in Mac OSX 10.5.8 in Mac pro (2.66GHz with 8Gb memory)

    Hello,
    I have a strange problem.
Some of my images are VERY slow to load,
    scale... (any image operation).
    I have those 2 images :
    http://193.252.5.30/tmp/cat1.jpg (25Ko : 295x551
    pixels)
    http://193.252.5.30/tmp/cat2.jpg (24Ko : 295x551
    pixels)
I wrote a little program which load and scale the
    image.
    Here is the result :
    cat1.jpg
Time to load image : 171 ms.
Time to scale image : 157 ms.
    cat2.jpg
Time to load image : 1157 ms.
Time to scale image : 2578 ms.How can this huge difference explained ?
Thanks for your help.Using the Netbeans profiler, I can see that for some reason, the cat2.jpg image is resulting in a hot spot where the scale() method ends up performing a color conversion via ColorConvertOp. Placing a debugger breakpoint on this call and debugging the code using cat1.jpg, the method is never called. So, there is something different about the color models of the two images, or there is a bug in the image reading code that is misinterpreting the image data.

  • Marquee selection in CS4 "crops" to image edges. How to reset?

In CS3, when you make a large selection using the circular marquee (ie: alt-drag until the selection grows past the image edges), it maintains the full selection.  But in CS4, it crops to the edges of the image.  Is there an option to fix this so marquees behave like they did in CS3?
See the image below for an example of what I mean:

    the_wine_snob wrote:
Thank you for the report. Now, did the Layer (Selected and active), have pixels beyond the borders of the image?
To answer the question, yes. But... drawing a marquee and then dragging it out works irrespective of layer content.
    Just checked again:
1/ In CS3, drawing marquee, irrespective of content, retains the circular shape even if exceeding the canvas.
2/ In CS4, irrespective of content, marquee crops to the two sides of the canvas with the circular shape that was inside.
3/ In both CS3 and CS4 you can draw a marquee within the canvas and then drag it out
    Maybe there's a setting in CS4????
PS - I just cannot imagine any Selection encompassing any area, where no pixels can be selected, as there are none.
Hunt... that doesn't make sense... of course you can draw a marquee / selection without content... It's the copying / cutting /etc. that will be affected...
PS: For some strange reason, i see you're back to 'the_wine_snob'!!  At least in the message quote!

  • Muse, pixelated image after trying to fill a box

Ok so I am trying to fill a box of 1003 px x 577 px with an jpg of 1100px by 4000px. I am trying to make a scroll image in a box with motion. I am having the problem that for it to show the image in good quality it has to be in "original" or "tile". In both cases it's not filling the box that I created with the same width of the jpg. I am having always the same problem. The only way I always fix this is making the image tremendously small in height. This should not be happening. The only way I can get it to be the width that I am creating the box and jpg image is to Fill-"scale to fit"... and it's pixelated.
Could someone help me with this unbearable problem please. I will really appreciate the gesture.
    Thank you.

THANK YOU SO MUCH BARBARA! I really appreciate you taking  the time to reply to my simple problem(eventhough at the time it was so frustrating). Thanks again. Leanne

  • Pixelated Images

Hi...Is there a trick to getting the images to look crisp and clear?
All my uploaded images look pixelated and I have tried everything from resizing myself to exact dimensions, to uploading as jpegs and pngs.  Nothing works.   I have the new version of Muse and the images are of worse quality than my last uploaded site.  This is an art gallery website so the quality is very important to my business.  Thanks to anyone who can help as I see this was an issue in 2013 too.
    Kim

I was having the same problem and solved it. I'm creating my site on a MacBook Pro with retina display, so the default "Standard" resolution for my Muse site wasn't good enough for my screen, making all my imported images look blurry no matter what format or resolution I set them as. I changed my site's resolution to HiDPI, and doubled the pixel size for all my assets while keeping the resolution at 72 dpi. Here's a step by step guide on how you can achieve this.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/muse/using/retina-display.html
Now my images look crisp and sharp when I publish my site (although they still look a bit pixelated in the Muse layouts for some reason.. but as long as they show up crisp on my published site I'm happy!) Hope this helps!
