CS4 Best Encoding Procedure for HD to SD?

I am working on a wedding project in Premiere CS4. Half of my footage is shot with a Canon XL2 (SD) and the other half with Canon XHA1(HDV). I decided not to uprez my SD footage to HD since Red Giant is giving me tons of problems: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZHHa_G5_UI
What I want to do is work on the hd and sd footage in an sd project and export in the end to mpeg2 (DVD).
Now my problem is left for the professionals to answer: What is the best encoding procedure for the SD export quality to be best. Should I encode in MPEG 2, or dvd, or another format since the footage is both hdv and sd. Another BIG issue is that hdv (I heard) is upper field, while sd is lower field. I shot in interlaced mode so what is the best way to encode without losing quality if my XL2 is lower field and XH A1 is upper.
Note: converting to progressive is NOT an option for me. PP looses a ton of quality converting to progressive. Red GIANT ****** takes FOREVER to convert interlaced to progressive. I tried a 10 min footage and it took like 60 hours to convert (realistically). And I have a quad core processor.
So, good insight would really help me out. I struggled for weeks with Red Giant, but they're a disapointment because it seems they don't know much about 64 bit processors.
Summary: Need best way or procedure to encode both SD and HD footage in one project to DVD output without losing quality.

The easiest and imo the best way is to capture the hdv footage as SD
Edit everything in SD and burn to dvd.

  • Best Encoding method for decent quality but low file size

Been trying to encode some mountain bike helmet cam footage which is fairly fast moving and looking for the best method for encoding at a decent quality without to much pixelation occuring. videos will be on my website so want file size to be kept quite low. website is www.extremesportsfilms.com if anyone is interested.
    Cheers

    Thank you, Harm !
This is the first time in my carreer, that I've seen a qualitysetting that doesn't inflict on filesized
I went in to set the bitrate diffently, but the field is grey'd out - it's not possible for me to change.
It seems to be locked no matter what quicktime-format I choose. If I choose h.264 format insted, I CAN change bitrate, but I need to deliver in XDcam for this client.
Is there no way for me to make the XDcam files smaller, then? They end up 5-7GBs for each show and with my upload-speed, it takes me 6-7 hours to upload and I would like to speed this up by decreasing the file sizes a little, if possible?
    Thanks

  • CS4: Best export settings for web delivery?

    Greetings, all!
I recently upgraded to working with HDV footage in CS4 from working with SD footage in Elements 3, and have been struggling a bit with getting the best quality export from CS4/AME for delivery over the web.
I'm most concerned with exporting a best quality master that I can then transcode to m4v, flv, etc.  So far, the best luck I've had is with a H.264 .mp4 export, but it's still not as clean as I'd like to see.  I've also read that exporting as a Quicktime animation provides excellent results, but I'm having issues with Quicktime on my new PC (error -43 file missing, for one thing) and I've read a bunch of posts here that advise staying away from QT whenever possible.  I'm working mostly with NTSC HDV 1440x1080 60i footage from a Canon XH-A1s, with some NTSC HD 1920x1080 30p and 24p footage from a Canon T2i thrown in sometimes.  I don't mind shrinking my export down to 1280x720, but for my master I really want the cleanest possible video.
Any tips would really be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Anybody have any tips???
Here are the specs I have been using so far.
    Format: H.264
    NTSC, 1280x720, 29.97 [fps], Progressive
    AAC, 128 [kbps], 44.1khz, Stero
VBR, 2 Pass, Target 6.00, Max 8.00 [mbps]
    Widescreen 16:9
    Profile: high
    Level: 5.1
What I get is a file that's about 250megs for a 5-minute video that looks pretty clean.  What I'm really looking for is more like a 2.5gig file that's super clean.  Back when I was shooting SD, I would export an .avi file as my master that would run about 1gig or so for a 5-minute file.  I'm looking for a similar workflow now that I'm working in HD.
    Any ideas?

  • What is the best workflow procedure for importing DV SP 16x9 footage into FCP7 and then exporting the best quality 16x9 to standard DVD so that it looks great (or at least good) on a 50" Samsung LCD TV ?????? Please help! anybody?? Thanks!

We are using a Sony HDV-Z7U camera for acquisition. We recently recorded an event using the camera's non HD capabilities. We set the camera to record "DV SP" 16x9 settings on both Mini-DV tape and CF card.
To import the DV SP footage into FCP7 we chose the "DV NTSC anamorphic" setting in the log and transfer settings window. After a successful transfer from the CF card (the CF card held approximately 83 minutes) we checked the size of the file and found it to be 16 Gigs! Why so big? An 83 miniDV tape shot in SD should easily fit on a standard 4.7 gig MPEG2 DVD.
We need to burn DVDs of this show - we sent it to compressor and got horrible quality.
What is the best setting to use in FCP7's log and transfer settings window to import DV SP 16x9 standard def. footage and what is the best method for exporting for outputting this footage to DVD that preserves the original quality of the DV SP footage?? Anyone? Many thanks

    > Why so big? An 83 miniDV tape shot in SD should easily fit on a standard 4.7 gig MPEG2 DVD.
No it doesn't. DV is 13GB per hour.
In any case, a Video DVD uses the MPEG 2 codec, not DV.
    >What is the best setting to use in FCP7's log and transfer settings window to import DV SP 16x9 standard def.
    DV NTSC anamorphic.
    >what is the best method for exporting for outputting this footage to DVD...
Use the Compressor DVD preset "Best Quality 90 mins".
    >...that preserves the original quality of the DV SP footage?
Not going to happen, you are compressing by a factor of 1:4. Shooting as HDV would have given you better quality material to start with. DV is at the bottom end of the scale.

  • Best practice procedure for wrong device's serial number

Hi all. In SAP IS-U it isn't possible to change the serial number of a device, as stated in SAP KB note 1620789. This note only implies that wrong device should just be deleted, but in our business scenario it is not that easy.
We are finding some meters that have been read for a long time and its serial number in the system is incorrect, so, in order to correct that situation we have to create a new device, losing history information.
My question, Does anyone knows of any tool, procedure or whatever that may help to solve this issue with the minimum impact in the system and in the customer reading and consumption history?
Thanks a lot for any help.

  • Best encoding settings for slides

    Hi,
I'm doing a DVD that's made up of a few Keynote slides. I export to QT (Animation Codec) and bring in to Compressor. The resulting MPEG-2 seem a bit jaggy on the text.
I have the bit-rate quite low as there's not a whole lot of movement.
Anyone have any idea what the optimum would be for this type of thing?
    Thanks.

Launching uncompressed transcoding will produce huge file. I wonder, if there are some kind of draft transcoding settings/codecs which can be used to just preview final material. I already know, that when transcoding 1080p material with lots of effects will consume huge amount of processor resources. For example ~30min long project was transcoded to 1080p format in 5h. Regular DVD format needs only 3h to complete in AME-CS4. Is this time can be even shorter, with very low quality material (only for preview)?

  • Best partition procedure for OSX speed

When my new MBP comes in I want to partition the 320 drive into a 40 gig for Vista, a 30 gig for scratch, +/or alternate start up disc, and the rest for OS X and all my programs. When you start up the disc utility it does not say what partition is located in the fastest disc section. How can one be assured to put OS X into this partition location? Is it the top one or bottom on the disc partition set up screen?? Or maybe it will automatically be the largest partition?

For the same reason they need other assistants or "wizards": to simplify & make more convenient what could otherwise only be done with more complex methods that require greater technical knowledge or more time to do. Boot Camp Assistant provides "one stop shopping" for file system & other checks, step-by-step installation instructions, initial creation of the Windows partition, & setting the Windows installer disk as the startup disk. And like many other assistants, it does not offer all the possible options to keep things simple.

If you don't use boot camp, then generally you must reformat the partition when you install windows,

To be clear about it, you must use Boot Camp (which is primarily the set of drivers & other software that allow Windows to use the Mac's hardware) if you want a fully functional Windows environment, but you don't have to use Boot Camp Assistant to set up the installation. As for what file system most people prefer, it depends on the Windows version (don't use FAT32 for Vista!) & on whether or not users want to write to the Windows partition from OS X (OS X reads from but does not write to NTFS).
    The only time it
be a real problem is if you wanted a fat32 partition larger than 32GB. ipartition can handle those
chores though, ipartition allows you to shrink or expand msdos partitions.
A FAT32 partition larger than 32 GB might be a problem in other respects. MS says larger ones encounter unacceptable slowness & inefficiencies, which is why (so the company says) that the Windows 2000 & later formatter program imposes that limit. Third party utilities can get around this, of course, but I believe fragmentation issues mitigate against everyday use of the larger FAT partitions.

  • Best HD Encoding Workflow for Web

If you don't know as much as you say, than I highly suggest hiring a consultant. DO NOT rely on what you hear from these forums, as many people will give you bad advice. And not to mention that that is a lot of ground to cover and to expect to learn about from an online forum. There are those of us who spend years and decades obtaining the knowledge we have, often paying for advice from consultants.
I can highly recommend Mike Curtis in the Austin Texas area for consulting: www.hdforindies.com. Also Larry Jordan at www.larryjordan.biz...Phil Hodgetts at www.digitalproductionbuzz.com...and myself at www.LFHD.net.
You get what you pay for. Free advice might be sketchy. And consumer monitors via HDMI will get you good results if you plan on delivering DVDs, but not if you plan on any sort of broadcast delivery.
If you have customers that want to do HD production they need to talk to HD production experts, not web people. I would not recommend any broadcast people to consult about web delivery...I know I wouldn't recommend myself.

  • Best Compressor encoding setting for DVD

I have an 80 min FCP project. It is a stage show where part of the frame is dark and the stage is light with gels and the Dancers. What is the Best encoding setting for a standard size DVD

I don’t understand that. (Me not so smart.) If there is a standardized Unicode value associated with glyph X, then how is it that none of the Unicode character sets in Firefox abide? Add a font? As I understand it, a font is just a re-representation of known characters. It seems like I’m hearing that not only does there have to be a character set decode of the data I’m viewing, but also a font that takes that Unicode value and translates it to something visual. That doesn’t wash. Between databases data is converted to and fro, irrespective of OS/App fonts installed. Sybase <-> Oracle doesn’t need a font installed. Viewing from SQL I don’t need a font installed.
But – thank you cor-el for effectively resolving my problem – even if I don’t understand the logic. Thank you for taking the time to reply!

  • What is the best practice and Microsoft best recommended procedure of placing "FSMO Roles on Primary Domain Controller (PDC) and Additional Domain Controller (ADC)"??

    Hi,
I have Windows Server 2008 Enterprise  and have
2 Domain Controllers in my Company:
    Primary Domain Controller (PDC)
    Additional Domain Controller (ADC)
My (PDC) was down due to Hardware failure, but somehow I got a chance to get it up and transferred
    (5) FSMO Roles from (PDC) to (ADC).
Now my (PDC) is rectified and UP with same configurations and settings.  (I did not install new OS or Domain Controller in existing PDC Server).
Finally I want it to move back the (FSMO Roles) from
(ADC) to (PDC) to get UP and operational my (PDC) as Primary.
(Before Disaster my PDC had 5 FSMO Roles).
Here I want to know the best practice and Microsoft best recommended procedure for the placement of “FSMO Roles both on (PDC) and (ADC)” ?
In case if Primary (DC) fails then automatically other Additional (DC) should take care without any problem in live environment.
Example like (FSMO Roles Distribution between both Servers) should be……. ???
Primary Domain Controller (PDC) Should contains:????
    Schema Master
    Domain Naming Master
Additional Domain Controller (ADC) Should contains:????
    RID
    PDC Emulator
    Infrastructure Master
Please let me know the best practice and Microsoft best recommended procedure for the placement of “FSMO Roles.
I will be waiting for your valuable comments.

Here I want to know the best practice
and Microsoft best recommended procedure for the placement of “FSMO Roles both on (PDC) and (ADC)” ?
There is a good article I would like to share with you:http://oreilly.com/pub/a/windows/2004/06/15/fsmo.html
For me, I do not really see a need to have FSMO roles on multiple servers in your case. I would recommend making it simple and have a single DC holding all the FSMO roles.
    In case if
Primary (DC) fails then automatically other Additional (DC) should take care without any problem in live environment.
No. This is not true. Each FSMO role is unique and if a DC fails, FSMO roles will not be automatically transferred.
There is two approaches that can be followed when an FSMO roles holder is down:
If the DC can be recovered quickly then I would recommend taking no action
If the DC will be down for a long time or cannot be recovered then I would recommend that you size FSMO roles and do a metadata cleanup
Attention! For (2) the old FSMO holder should never be up and online again if the FSMO roles were sized. Otherwise, your AD may be facing huge impacts and side effects.

  • What are best Mpeg encoder settings for making DVDs?

In switching from PP1.5 to CS3 the procedure is different for making DVDs and we have to encode mpeg files that later get picked up by Encore DVD build proces. What are the best mpeg encode settings for making the DVDs?
    Thanks,
    Chuck Taylor

    Question:
If you are doing a video that is small enough that you are not worried about size, what is the absolute best quality encoder settings? Would a Continous Bitrate result in a higher quality file generally? VBR is for trying to make a smaller file I assume.
I'm frustrated with even white letters on black titles that have some flicker. I just don't seem to get the smooth quality I desire.
Should I look at a different encoder?
If you output PP3 to an AVI and then import it into encore, isn't there a reduction of Q. due to the save to the AVI file?
    thanks.

  • Best Video Card for non 3d/compositing work in Premiere CS4?

Hi all, I'm looking to optimize my system where I can to speed up the editing process. I edit 1080p footage from the Canon 5D MKII (h.264 MOV files)using half-res h.264 proxies, but CS4 seems to hang a lot in the timeline view and clips just disappear and instead show green. I'm switching to half-res MPEG-2 (.m2v) proxies now and so far that problem seems to have gone away (still testing), but when timeline display quality is at "High Quality" (vs. automatic) there's still some chop during slow pans (not seen with "Automatic" or "Draft Quality").
Anyway, I'm looking for the weakest point in my system and suspect the video card. My system is an 2.66 i7 processor, 6GB 1333 ram, 1x160GB sata II HD (OS/Apps), 3x1TB SATA II RAID 0 (paging file, data), and an $80 ATI 4650 512 MB video card running Vista 64.
So all that said, what's the best general graphics card for editing HD video in Premiere CS4? I don't care about 3d or compositing at this stage, just basic editing of unrendered (timeline playback) HD video, maybe sometimes 1-3 HD layers, some basic color correction effects (b+w, contrast, etc), dissolves, text overlay, some clip speed manipulation.
Many seem to recommend the Nvidia quadro cards, but I haven't found any information to suggest they help with anything other than 3D/compositing, which I don't need (and therefore don't need to pay the premium).
There's also the Nvidia CX card, but it's main feature is touted as encoding h.264, whereas I could care less about that and ideally need decoding of h.264 in the timeline to be better. I haven't seen any great reviews on this card of heard of average user testimonials, probably because it's $2k and it mainly marketed as "zoom more fluidly in photoshop, export h.264 4x faster", which seem like minor issues vs. "better realtime playback of HD video".
I sort of rambled, but if any informed CS4 users can help answer the question regarding the best video card for general CS4 editing use (not 3d/compositing stuff) I'd love to get more insight.

So in Media Encoder CS4, I tried encoding one of the clips that plays back the least smooth in the Premiere timeline (a slow pan across intricate patterns on a sand dune in death valley) to the following:
Format: P2 Movie, Preset: DVCPRO HD 720P 30
(this was the only format in media encoder that mentions DVCPRO HD)
I noticed when trying to customize the setting, that there is no 30 fps option, just 23.976, 29.97, and 59.94. I just went with 29.97 as that was the closest to the 30 fps of the source MK II footage. The width and height were also unajustable at 960x720 for the DVCPRO HD format.
Playing the output in the timeline view of Premiere was comparable in smoothness to the m2v file. I looked at my resource monitor during playback looking for bottlenecks, and the CPU does seem to spike at 100% initially when playing this clip back. I reverted to the m2v version and also saw the same CPU spike. I also reverted back to the down-res'd mp4 version, same spike. Moving display quality down to draft does allow for smooth playback here.
So I guess there's something about this clip that is CPU intensive to play back in the timeline in any of these formats. The original 1080p version plays back perfectly in both quicktime and VLC player.
Anyway, for now I think I'm content with using the m2v proxies as a big chunk of the clips are fairly smooth, and using a reduced quality display mode for clips that don't play as smoothly is accpeptable for now. At least so far I'm not seeing the hanging/video not displaying (and instead showing a green screen) that I was with the mp4 proxies.
If anyone has any other suggestions as to how to get smoother timeline playback for these proxies (or the original h.264 .MOV files), however, whether it be a hardware upgrade (e.g. better video card) or a different proxy codec, I'd love to hear them and give it a shot.

  • Is there a Step By Step download procedure for CS4??

Wondering if there is a step by step procedure for downloading CS4 from the Adobe site??
Yes- I have tried the following link,  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402065.html
however, what folder is best to download it too??
It also says that both the EXE file and the 7z file must be in the same folder to operate the download.
Which folder gets opened first after download? Where are the the above files located? Does the EXE go into the same folder as the 7z file or the other way around??
Most of the FAQ is centered around Akamai... I have removed my anti-spy programs completely and turned off Macafee.
The download FAQ does not address a step by step procedure. Anyone know if Adobe has one??

Now, I have not downloaded any Adobe programs, but for the rest, I download to a special folder in my C:\Download Files for each program. I then will Extract with full folder structure to a sub-folder beneath that program's folder. I will install from there, with all AV, pop-up blockers and spy sweepers off.
Tom's suggestion seems to be a good one for Adobe programs. though I have not use that path - remember, I am NOT downloading and installing any Adobe programs. Still, many have expressed full success with Tom's location.
Be sure that you ARE logged-in as an Administrator. This is very important to most Adobe programs. Also, allow the installation to locate on your C:\. I do choose C:\Adobe, and not the default C:\Program Files\Adobe, but that is just the way that I manage my Adobe programs. Default is fine.
Good luck, and do NOT forget to Extract with full folder structure for the installation.
