[CS4] Best way to mix HD and SD?

Hey guys, had some fantastic reading here that's done me a lot of good. Hopefully someone can help me out here.
Here's the scoop - I'm working on a documentary, and we're currently trying to find the best way to mix HD and SD footage so that it's best presentable. Everything was shot on DV/HDV, so before we waste all the time capturing just to find out there are better ways to go about it, we wanted to see what others have done. Essentially, our narrative clips (think Masterpiece Theatre) are shot in HD, and we're using a lot of still images at a high enough resolution to work in HD. Only thing is, a lot of our interview clips are shot in SD, but in 16:9 so at least aspect ratio is the same.
What would be the best way to go about this for consistent video quality? Would you recommend capturing everything in its native format, upscaling the SD footage as best as possible and exporting as HD? Bringing down the quality of the HD footage upon capture and just editing/exporting everything as SD? If you'd recommend upscaling, any advice on how to go about that? Appreciate all the help!

Curt,
I have never beaten him, though I do try often. Job well done!
Now, if that lottery ticket is the big winner, the forum will suffer, as you head off to spend your $'s.
Hunt
PS - I agree with you both.

For I-phone and I-pad, what is the best way to open emails and attachments without using wifi?  I turned off wifi in my settings but my boss thinks there may be another way and a better way to use something else instead of wifi.  Any help would be appreciated!  Thank you!

Thanks!  That is a very good question you post.  My boss asked me that and I am assuming that he is having issues with using wifi wherever he is at.  My boss is the kind of person that when he asks something you look into it and ask him no questions...he's the only one asking questions!  But thank you for your response I will tell him the information you told me and hopefully that will help!

  • Best way to create tasks and assign to sharepoint groups

Hi everyone, I have a custom list which contains newsletter info that is to be seen by around 400 groups (they are stores) and then I need them to mark each list item as 'completed'
I have been trying to figure out the best way to do this and decided to keep the custom list and somehow link it to a task for each item in the list. We have nintex so was thinking of creating a workflow to create a separate task for each group (store) so
they can mark it as completed.
Is this the best way to go about it or am I completely off track?
Basically all I need is a list which contains around 30 items and around 400 groups (stores) which contain users (store staff) to be able to mark items on the list as completed so it recognises that each store has completed each task.
    Thanks

    Hi  ,
According to your description, you want to find the best way for creating tasks for 30 list items and assigning the task to around 400 groups.
For the workflow, it is heavy  that  you need to create around 12000 (30*400) tasks .  In my opinion, the best way is to do with a custom timer job. For more information, you can refer to the
    blog:

  • Best Way to Stack 2d and 3d in a Composite

Hey everyone, it seems I'm really on a 3d binge with Photoshop CS6. It's just a blast! Anyway, I'm looking to figure out the best way to stack 2d and 3d items together in the same document, and maximize the editibility...
I'm working on a digital room setting, and I have part of the room in 3d and part in 2d. So, for example, the walls, ceiling, floor, table, chairs and corner hutch are 3d, but the regular hutch and buffet server are in 2d.
    - The table and chairs need to be in the foreground
    - The regular hutch and server are behind the table and chairs
    - The corner hutch needs to be behind all other pieces of furniture
So, you may be catching on by now to my little dilemna... I want all the 3D items to have the same lighting and reflect off one another, however, I need the 2d layers to somehow fit "inbetween" the 3d objects. The simple question is, how can this be done? Is there a way to mask the foreground 3D objects so that they appear to be in from of the 2D objects? My only current solution is this:
    - Move the whole 3D layer (the scene layer) all the way to the back
    - Make the final decision on the position of the table and chairs
    - Hide all other meshes in the scene besides the table and chairs
    - Render, so the edges are clean
    - Load the newly rendered 3D layer as a selection (which loads the table and chairs only)
    - Either create a new layer from the selection of the rendered 3D layer, or mask the 3D layer so that the table and chairs appear to be in the foreground
I didn't anticipate this post being this long, so I apologize,... but as you can assume, the method above means I can no longer edit/reposition/scale the 3D at all, so if there's a better way to stack these room elements I would be extremely grateful to whoever knows how!
    Thanks!
    Andy

First, I was wrong about layers needing to be hidden to prevent their appearance being included in a new Postcard. I misunderstood something that happened when working with a 3D document a while ago.
Materials support transparency/opacity. A material has an opacity control that can use a texture. The material opacity percentage is multiplied by the opacity of the texture.
When a Postcard is created, its default material's opacity control will contain an instance of the texture that's in the diffuse control, which is a PSB file containing the 2D layer (pixels, Shape, Smart Object or Group) from which the Postcard was created.
Here is an example. Two solid Pyramid meshes and a Postcard of a cloud Shape layer:
The Shape layer from which the Postcard was created is in the document that can be opened by picking Edit in the dropdown of the buttons highlighted above:

  • Best way to handle audio and video?

Can someone give me suggestions on best way to handle audio and video clips. 2 issues:
Audio- I want to avoid problems for visitors who may need to install something to listen, and would like them to be able to remain viewing page while listening. I understand how to set up the Iweb player option, and I understand how to simply link to a mp3 file that relies on the visitors player. I'm thinking I need to "embed a player" (?) which is something I haven't dealt with yet.
Video- I have a link to a .mov file. It plays it in either a real small box, or if you enlarge it , the image deteriorates. Is there a better way to handle this?

  • Best way to move data and programs to another profile on same Mac?

    Hello,
What is the best way to move data and programs to another profile on the same Mac? I have a user who's profile is corrupt, I know that most programs will work on both the new and old profile however when trying to copy the Desktop folder, or Documents folder I am getting permissions denied.
Sort of like weeding a garden, I'm hoping I do not have to pick the data in each folder and copy individually.
    Thanks for your help!
    Johnathon

This usually means that a configuration or preference file is corrupted.  In this user's /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder locate any preference files associated with iLinc and drag to the Trash.
I would also check in the /Home/Library/Caches/ folder for a file or folder associated with iLinc and delete as well.
See if the problem is resolved in the user's normal account.
It's not that you cannot copy data from account to account, but doing so causes a lot of permissions issues that must be resolved.  The MacFixit article I linked above shows what you need to do after transferring from one account to another in order to change permissions on the "foreign" files to those of the destination account.

There are only two ways of transfering things on the iPad.

  • Best way to backup Iphoto and Itunes?

I just purchased a 2TB Timecapsule and after reading addtional reviews I am reconsidering my purchase. What is the best way to backup iphotos and itunes? The idea of backing up the data wirelessly and seamlessly with time machine was a what encouraged me to purchase Apples solution. However I am seeing alot of TC's are dying after their warranty expires which is a deal breaker as I have a newborn and do not want to lose pictures.
My 2009 MBP memory is nearly full and my photos eat memory. I would like a solution that allows me to access previous photos etc without relying on the MBP HD in the event it is stolen, crashes etc.
The same holds true for itunes which I rarely use now that I have Spotify, however I do not want to lose my itunes catelog in two years either, but it would be great to have them off my MBP HD, but readily accessible if necessary.
The literature on purchasing cloud storage is pretty scarce (Icloud!?, Amazon?)
Any insight is greatly appreciated, and I am sure I will have followup questions as I need to resolve this soon now that I have a 2 week window to return the TC.
    Thank you!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Presumably, the old iMac is pre-Firewire? If it is, it really would be very slow for backing up. You can use these methods to network the two machines on my FAQ:

I don't know of any other way.
Proxy and Transcoded media can always be re-generated if the original files are in place.
If this question refers to your system drive then a BIG suggestion is to aquire a fast dedicated media drive.

  • HT1473 What is the best way to covert Cassettes and LPs to CD so it will be recognized on iTunes?

What is the best way to convert cassettes and records to digital so it can be recognized on iTunes?

I think hhgttg27 has made a couple of very good points. Perhaps it's worth expanding the discussion.
    hhgttg27 wrote:
I'd be tempted to say that unless you already have audiophile equipment and/or the LPs and tapes involved are not available in digital format you'd spend a lot less time and get better results just re-buying the music on CD or in a downloadable format.  Trying to deal with defects in the source (particularly the pops and clicks that are present in a lot of LPs) can be incredibly time consuming, and any of the tools that claim to clean up such sources automatically generally do so to the detriment of the overall audio quality.
I have made these conversions myself in the past, and I can confirm, it is a very time consuming process. I usually clean my audio of the clicks and pops manually, which makes the process even longer. As also stated, if the music is available in digital form, it is probably easier to simply buy the digital file. Consider the benefits:
Since you are creating digital files, ignore the cost of a CD and consider the cost of ready made digital files. Digital albums usually cost less than a CD, and if you don't want a complete album, it's possible (with most albums) to buy only the songs you want, which reduces unnecessary costs
It will be much less work. (In many countries, the cost of one digital version of a song is probably equivalent to about six minutes of paid employment. When I first started creating digital versions of my vinyl, it was taking me up to four-and-a-half hours to turn one album {of 60 minutes} into digital files. So to create a decent quality file of a four minute song could take me 10 minutes or longer. I could probably do it in less time now, but I'm experienced.)
Higher Bit Rate songs are available for some music, if 256Kbps (as supplied by iTunes and Amazon, among others) isn't good enough for you
The time taken to create a decent digital version of a song includes:
The time to record it (real time, so a four minute song takes four minutes)
Editing the start and finish times, so that you have a clean start and finish to the song
Editing out faults, such as clicks and pops (this is probably the most time consuming task)
    Typing in the song information
    song title
    album title
    artist
    track number
    genre
    year
extra information for compilation (various artist) albums
Saving the file - giving it a filename
Finding the artwork for the song/album and adding that to the digital file

  • Best way to mix multiple camera angles from multiple performances?

There has to be a slick way to do this, but I can't seem to figure it out.  I'm hoping someone can offer their advice on the best way to approach this project. (I'm using Premiere Pro CS4)
I have footage from 2 performances of a high school play that I want to mix together, with 2 cameras used each night:
    Cam1: Friday Right
    Cam2: Friday Center
    Cam3: Saturday Wide Left
    Cam4: Saturday Wide Right
I only had 2 cameras, but I wanted to capture 4 different angles that I could later mix and match.  The problem is that, as live performances go, you can't count on exact timing from night to night.  It's really simple to do multi-camera editing for one night with the Multicamera Monitor (painfully simple), which works great for the 2 angles that were filmed on the same performance, but if I try to do it with footage from different nights, it only takes about a minute for actions onstage to be so far off between the two nights that I can't switch between cameras with reasonable accuracy.
Since I will be going back and forth many times among 4 clips, the ideal solution that I have come up with (but I don't think Premiere can do) is to have the ability to set markers or keyframes at certain locations that basically say "switch to MM:SS on camera X now" without actually trimming clips and overlaying them into a single video track.  So basically determining which camera is "Live".  This would let me do rolling edits without having to create a new clip every time I want to switch to that camera angle.
I may be missing something very simple or over-analyzing something that really won't be that bad, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the best way to approach cutting back and forth among the same 4 unsynchronized camera angles numerous times.  If nayone has a suggestion I'd love to hear it.
    Thanks,
    -keen

    Time - being in sync...
Most performances like that shot ( for like a music video ) are done to recorded music ( lip sync and play to recorded music ) ..so timing stays the same to the music...  dont know what kind of performance you shot but this gives you an idea how tough it is to keep timing for music performances.

If you can't just use one night as suggested earlier by Jim and Stan....I would say bite the bullet and just do what you dont want to do...
make subclips ( trim clips or whatever ) and forget about rolling edits...
You might want to consider putting stuff in 4 sequences... day 1, day 2, day 3, day 4...
make a 5th sequence called "rough cut " or something...
each time you take a "clip" from one of the 4 sequences move that clip up one video channel ( and copy / paste to your 5th sequence )..which then gives you a visual quick guide what you have USED from the sequences...so you dont waste time scrubbing through stuff you already put into sequence 5....
You may be able to choose just ONE sound track from one night and just use THAT...and pick shots that FIT those moments in time OK from all 4 sequences....you can play with duration / time of a small clip ( as it is unlinked to the sound in this scenario ) to make it FIT better...but that would be very subtle changes...
ps...I keep forgetting...some people use the camera to record sound instead of a sound mixer, recorder, etc...so if thats your case what I suggested at bottom of mssg probably would not work...using duration / time...unless its REALLY minor adjustment...hmmmm, maybe export just the sound from a single performance and try using that as your ONE sound file for the performance...I really dont know what you would do if you recorded sound with the cameras...as I would never do that I dont know what to suggest if thats the case...

  • Best way to mix multiple songs with same template?

From what I gathered, I know I can save a particualar session as a "user" template, that way I can mix another song retaining all the same EQ, comp... etc, as well as arrange layout. Is this the best way to accomplish what I aim for? I've finished one song, now i am using a song from the same recording session, (same mic placement, and track assignment). Now, I want to start fresh with another song, using different effects and such, but I'd like to keep the same basic EQ and such.......

    From the Manual 272:
    Channel Strip Settings Menu
If you click on the word Insert on any channel strip, the Channel Strip Settings menu
opens. This menu allows you to load and save the entire routing configuration of a
single channel strip, including all loaded plug-ins and settings.
The ability to save an entire routing configuration can be used in a number of ways,
    such as:
    • Setting up and storing complex multi-effect configurations—on any type of channel.
    • Similarly, the configuration of a particular routing configuration for use with multi-
    output software instruments.
    • Copying a routing or effect configuration between Projects.
    • The rapid creation of new Templates.
The Channel Strip menu offers the following items:
    • Next/Previous Channel Strip Setting: Loads the next or previous Channel Strip
    Setting in the list.
    • Copy/Paste Channel Strip Setting: Allows to you to copy and paste Channel Strip
    Settings between channels or Projects.
    • Save Channel Strip Setting as: Saves the Channel Strip Setting, and allows you to
    name it.
    • Once you have created one or more Channel Strip Settings, a list of settings will be
shown below the menu functions. The active Channel Strip Setting is denoted by a
    bullet.
So it recalls all the inserts and settings in 1 convenient preset (as well as if the track is M or S) but where it is routed or sends info is not recalled - nor Pan or fader, though there is a gain plug.

  • What is the best way to achieve backup and storage by combining TC and external HD?

    Hi,
By reading various posts I came to the conclusion that my recently bought 2TB TC (still in the box) needs to be combined with an external HD (not bought yet) if I want both network (WIFI) storage and safe backup.
Could someone please confirm what the best way of organising the two devices is and advice on the various steps I will need to take?
See below for some extra information:
I want to back up a Mac Book Pro with 250 GB HD and potentially a HP laptop (250 GB as well).
Can this also allow me to backup a iPad?
The storage will need to be accessible to both machines. It will mostly be pictures.
Back up should be as automated as possible, i.e. Time Machine is the obvious choice but I am open to other tools.
With regards to the external hard drive, are models like Western Digital Element or Seagatte Expansion suitable to stay plugged in the TC 24/7? Will they not overheat?
My initial idea is to use the WIFI facility of the TC box. I can use the WIFI facility of the modem/router is more appropriate.
Thank you in advance for your replies.
    Denis

The drives you are backing up are small. There is no real need to use external drive but you do need a backup if you store files on the TC.. for just backups that is not necessary.
You cannot partition the TC but you can create a disk image for using with data files.. ie the PC backup.
    Read Q3 here http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Can this also allow me to backup a iPad?
iPad is backed up to itunes.. or to cloud.. it is not able to see the TC drive at all without an app. You can manually copy files to the TC using filebrowser app but there is no auto backup software in the iPad to other than itunes.
    It will mostly be pictures.
Back up should be as automated as possible, i.e. Time Machine is the obvious choice but I am open to other tools.
So you are not backing up, you are storing files.
You cannot access files in a Time Machine backup except by restoring them to the Mac. The PC cannot see them at all. That means you are not backing up.. you are storing files, even if just copies of the files. To do that you just copy via finder or windows explorer.
There are various scripting methods to ensure these photos are synced on all the devices. .but that is not what a backup software does.
If you want to use USB drive that is fine, they can stay attached 24/7. The disk will spin down generally when not in use.
    They will not overheat.
But it is much faster to copy files to the USB drive plugged into the computer than on the TC.. the USB link on the TC is slow.. less than half the speed of the same drive on the computer.. much slower than the TC internal drive. It might be better to plug a USB drive directly into a computer.
