CS4 brush and stroke plugin

I'm interested in the CS5 bristle brush and beautiful stroke feature but I'm not willing to shell out the $$$ to upgrayyd to CS5 simply because of this. Is there any free plugin/way to add them to CS4?

Sorry, but not everybody is rich enough to put no effort into looking for free (cash wise) solutions when they possibly may exist especially since I hear crazy rumors that some people actually make software mods for free. As to why I don't want to upgrade, would you automatically go buy a $5000 computer when you could possibly get one good enough or as good for free/lower cost? Anyway I thought I read about plugins that add new brush strokes so I was looking for CS5 like recommendations but I guess maybe they don't exist.

Eraser tool in Photoshop CS4 acts as if it is transparent when on brush or pencil mode. Block acts like its not transparent at all but there are no options for opacity, flow or brush size. Whats wrong and how to I make the brush and pencil eraser erase completely without having to go over it multiple times?
It started randomly about two weeks ago and I thought it was a glitch that would just go away. But now I am getting sick of using only the block eraser on one size. Help?

The easiest thing to start with is to reset the Eraser Tool.
Right click on the Eraser icon in the tool options bar and then click on Reset Tool.

CS4 and CS5 Plugin Issue!

Having a major problem with Chameleon and CS4 and CS5. When I run the program out of CS4 or CS5:
1) The Grab Fragment seems to work.
2) When I open another photo and run Chameleon , Make Collage, I get
1. Unhandled exception! Crash dump saved to c:\users\public\documents\akvis\crashdump.
Please help! I’m running version 6.0.1253.3084-r
I now get amessage stating:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Error.
App terminated in an Unusual way.
Contact app support
I used to run in CS4 however it does not run at all. I'm wondering if a Visual C file got corrupted.

Without knowing exactly what the bug is in the Akvis code, I don't know.
But some third party plugins always need an update when new versions of Photoshop are released (especially those that try to modify Photoshop's UI).
We work hard to maintain plugin API compatibility, and most plugins work just fine in new versions, but there are always some problems to work out in third party plugin code.
(Macintosh plugins are going through a lot of problems in CS5 because we had to change the UI toolkit used, and many assumptions made by plugin UI code no longer hold)

Adding brushes and symbols to Illustrator CS4

I'm fairly new to Illustrator, though a long time Photoshop user, and I want to add some vectors I've downloaded from 123freevectors. (I'm on a Mac)
In Photoshop, I had no problem adding new brushes from other sources by just dropping them in Presets > Brushes folder.
I tried doing the same with Illustrator by dropping downloaded vectors to Presets > Symbols. Although they showed up in the library listing, the symbols were not correct. Ditto by dropping them in Presets > Brushes.
How do I load new brushes and symbols, and how do I know which library to put them in when what I've downloaded is just described as vectors with extension of .ai (some are .eps)

Plac3en the file in a document when it is placed in the document drag the art into the symbols panel same for the brushes panel and there you will have a choice of what kinfd of brush ou wish to make, you can also drag ity into the watches pamel to make a pattern fill. Y^ou can save the swattchges, bvrushes nd symbols as libraries for use in the future.

Problem with CS4 brush tool "paint inside mode"

When I use the Flash CS4 brush tool in "Paint Inside" mode it erases part of the strokes around shapes. For rectangles it erases the stroke on the top and left hand side where the brush head crosses it, though it never seems to affect the other sides. The effect is less consistant with ovals, but it breaks the strokes at some points. I am using Flash CS4 version 10.0.2 on Windows XP, and I have checked for program updates through the Help menu. Here are two examples:
If I understand right, the brush tool shouldn't be changing the stroke anywhere in this mode. I would be grateful for any help.

This has existed for a very long time in Flash, at least back to version 8. I'm not too sure, but it certainly only affects two out of the four sides of a square. There is a bug on this, so I will send it back for review.

HELP! Lightroom Crashes Only with Adjustment Brush and only when using HDMI output!

This is very frustrating. I use my Acer N56V laptop to teach Lightroom workshops. I use a 32 inch television as a display. When I have my laptop attached with an HDMI cable and try to use Lightroom's adjustment brush, it crashes. Either the screen and computer just shuts down or I get the Blue Screen of Death. I can do anything else! I can edit in Photoshop, do anything else in Lightroom or even Silver EFX Pro. I can even click on the adjustment brush. But the minute the brush hits the photo (and not before), the computer crashes. If I don't have it attached to the HDMI or if I use a Serial cable, no issues. It's only the adjustment brush and only the HDMI output.
I called Adobe and they said it was because my onboard video card was primary and not the Nvidia. I called Acer and they said it's auto detect. I also tried making the Nvidia card primary and it still happened. Any ideas???

You have switched the overlay mask to always show. Fortunately, it's easy fixed i.e. tap the O key. Shift+O will cycle the overlay through various colours

Unlocking hidden frames and strokes for iBooks Author

Perhaps you know that there are hidden frames and strokes available for Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. There is even an installer (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/32390/frames-and-strokes-installer).
These same frames and strokes are available on iBooks Author.
Work on a backup copy for safety, of course.

OK-here oare my modified plists. They work for me to allow the use of the new frames I hope you find them useful
1) Right click on the ibook author icon under applications and show package contents
2) Navigate to Contents:Resources and make a copy of KFGraphicInspectorFrames.plist ; SLGraphicInspectorFrames.plist and KFGraphicInspectorSmartStrokes.plist.
3) Copy the plists below into your Resources folder.
4) Close and open author- Your new frames and strokes should be available under inspector.

Problems with "no color" in the "Fill and Stroke"

I am having problems with “no color” in the “Fill and Stroke” function of Flash CS4 Pro.
I had been using CS4 for 10 days and everything worked fine. Then I tried experimenting with various color combinations (along with “no color”) for “Fill and Stroke” for a simple button. Suddenly CS4 locked up on me while I was working with the “color panel”. A second color panel appeared in the upper left corner and the program was not responding. All I could do was to end the CS4 task.
After that, whenever I created even a simple rectangle, at first the colors would appear as indicated for “Fill and Stroke”, but when I selected the object to see its properties, either the stroke or the fill color box would have a red slash line, indicating a “no color”, and I couldn’t select the color box to change it using the ink bottle tool, although the other box worked fine.
Rebooting did not help. So I uninstalled CS4 (and didn’t keep the preferences), rebooted, then reinstalled it. The problem was still there. Logging on as another user didn’t help. I tried restoring the Windows system to before I installed CS4 and resinstalling it and that didn’t work. I have a disfunctional CS4 now and I don’t know what to do to fix it. Please help me. Thank you.

Have you updated flash to 10.0.2? Have you played around with a bunch of different selections, objects, and so forth to see if this box is always incorrect? I think there's some particular selection (order of selecting things, and so on), where the color swatches in one location don't work as expected. However, it should not happen all the time and from what I recall it was fairly easy to work around (I can't even figure out what this was - so probably not it, as it seems hard to run into or perhaps now fixed).
Also make sure you have the stroke selected - if you don't have everything selected, either the fill or stroke will show no color and dim depending on the selection.

yes, they're all installed by default in totally seperate folders. just don't mix them up (like copying plugins from one to another).

New watercolour brushes and the AHB

It's very disappointing that none of the new watercolour brushes work with the Art History Brush. With a lot of customisation they work after a fashion but you lose the qualities of the brushes as designed. These new brushes seem very picky when it comes to the tools they are used with eg the AHB, Pattern Stamp Tool, Mixer Brush and Smudge Tool. A pity.

Workflow: On the AHB - create a snapshot to use as the source image (from a 2482x3648px image). Select the AHB in the Toolbox. Select the Watercolor Wash brush in the brush menu. Set size of the brush to 32, Mode: Normal, Opacity: 100%, Style: Tight Short, Area: 21px, Tolerance: 0%. Leave all brush settings at default.
Problem: the brushstroke created deposits color in disjointed faint blobs. There is no continuos wash. You can create a continuos flow of paint with these settings and any pre-cs5 (5) brush - ie the old faithfuls like Chalk.
Workaround: To increase paint deposited: I increase the Depth of the Texture in the Texture settings - not ideal. I have found no way of changing the paint blobs into a continuous paint flow. Fiddling with Size and Distortion in the Brush Tip Shape settings, and Angle Jitter in Shape Dynamics, can camoflage the problem a little but the result is nothing like a watercolour wash because individual elliptical blobs are still visible in the stroke.
Effect I'm after: a paint depostion that looks more like a transparent watercolour wash. The effect is not bad when applying the Watercolor Wash brushtip in an ordinary brushstroke to create a colour area on a white layer with the brush (as opposed to the AHB).
Of course with all the available AHB styles, brushtips, and brush settings there are countless combinations - but none I have found that avoid visible blobbing with the AHB.
If you look at, for example, the x4 Watercolor brushes in the Natural Brushes library, these brushes work fine with the AHB - the problem with them is that even with reduced opacity and with Wet Edges selected, the effect they create is more like Gouache - not a transparent watercolour wash. I was hoping for rather more from the new Watercolour brushes. For those of us who clone from photographs using the AHB, Mixer or Smudge tools, to create natural media simulations, they are a bit of a disappointment.

CS4 Brush cursor acting strange over 80px diameter

Has anyone came across this problem? When the diameter of my brush (and doesn`t matter if it is regular brush or clone brush) goes over 80 px, the cursor is no longer a circle, but it starts to "cut off" - and the more I increase the diameter, the less of the cursour I can see. In the end, over 500 px diameter, I can't see the cursor at all anymore. I find it very annoying, so any idea what to do about it?

Since you already have updated to 11.0.1 that only leaves your video card or its drivers as likely candidates for causing the fault.
Is the card on the tested list? Does it support OpenGL to the extent needed by Photoshop? Have you updated the drivers?
