CS4 Clone Tool Problem

I am using CS4, and my clone tool will act up every once in a while by cloning to an area that I have not gone over. I will be cloning and then when I start an area, nothing happens to the area cloned (the area I am trying to cover over with selected area), then suddenly another area of the photo will show the clone.
Has anyone had this problem, and know how to fix it? I have reset my settings by doing a CTRL, Shift, ALT at startup and that doesn't fix the problem.
Roger

Can I ask a question in this panel? I have CS 4 which I just bought, the disk that came with it only has a few minutes of tutorial on it and wants to go online, I don't have my PC on line, nor do I have the capability on any of the 5 PC's. I don't seem to be able to find the CLONE SOURCE PANEL, so can't try the de-select "Show Overlay". Can you tell me where it is? Thanks, Larry Flagg

  • CS4 Clone Tool NOT Multithreading and CS4 Slow on i7 965 Processor

I noticed for the first time that the new clone tool in CS4 is not using all of my processors on my new i7 965XE processor. In fact it uses only one processor and this makes it run incredibly slow. I have also noticed that CS4 in general is rather sluggish on this hardware which is supposedly one of the most powerful processors available. I am running the i7 965XE with 8GB of Ram and still find Photoshop rather slow. I would expect it to be super snappy on this hardware, perhaps I need to optimise settings somehow, does anyone have any suggestions or is CS4 not equipped to properly address the i7 processors yet???
    Any help appreciated.
My version of CS4 is 11.0

Mike, could you take a moment to reread your original post?
    "CS4 Clone Tool NOT Multithreading"
"In fact it uses only one processor and this makes it run incredibly slow."
Those are not observations and represent two direct conclusions, both of which are incorrect. The first conclusion is that the clone tool is not threaded for multiple processors (it is). The second conclusion is that the lack of threading is what makes the clone tool run slow on your system (almost certainly not the case).
Implied in your statements is a third conclusion: that using more processors makes things faster (rarely true). That is a common enough fallacy that I felt the need to offer a more detailed explanation to help you and other readers understand more about the issues involved. I tried to keep that explanation short and simple.
I gave you an alternate hypothesis (small clone area) that could have explained your observation, since you didn't provide enough details for us to rule that out.
I also gave you more information about what is going on under the hood to help you understand why you observed what you did on processor usage.
Then I pointed you to existing topics that offer a much more likely explanation for the slowdown you are seeing.
If you had described with the clone tool slowdown without the incorrect conclusions and without phrasing most of your post as accusations, you probably would have gotten useful help from other users more quickly. Even my first instinct was to ignore your post, but it sounded like you were confused, a bit angry, and needed some help.
I am sorry you read things into my post that I did not intend. I'm simply trying to help you understand what you observed, and find a solution to the problem you described.

  • Clone tool problems

I recently purchased the Adobe cs5 upgrade.
it works fine but I am encountering a huge problem with the clone tool.I am trying to clone from one image to another. I click on the source image and the familiar tool with the crosshair appears. When I move over to the target image the original crosshair on the source image disappears but the cloning occurrs. on my target image
The + sign on the source image is now invisible so it is hard to  view the area I want to clone from
IN cs3 the + sign remained on the source image. I reset the tool but the problem still remains.
However when cloning  one part to another on  the same image there is no problem and  can see what area I am cloning from
I do not know if there are any preferences  I failed to choose. I am very familiar with Photoshop so this really baffles me
Hopefully some one will be able to solve this
    Thanks for any assistance

Photoshop CS5 works for me just as you described too:  No source indicator when cloning between images, a + indicator when cloning in the same image.  In this case OpenGL Drawing was enabled, set to Advanced mode.
    I did some additional testing...
With Photoshop CS5 and OpenGL DISABLED the behavior changes.  In this case the + indicator DOES move around on the source image even when cloning from another image.
I also verified the exact same condition exists with Photoshop CS4.
Perhaps it's just something they couldn't quite get to work with the new OpenGL drawing mode.
Running without OpenGL is probably not a good workaround, as you lose a number of other good things without it.
There's an official bug report form here that you may wish to use:

  • Clone tool problem

I had an image open with four layers. On the fourth layer I was using the clone tool and I was having problems with it. As I was cloning out a section, the clone tool started to make odd pixels on the image. I had to flatten the layers and create a new layer for the clone tool to work right.

Yes this question pops up quite regularly. Its a feature that is hidden away in a panel that should probably never have been introduced. These very basic options do not appear duplicated as they should, in the Options Bar.
The answer is - if you show your Clone Source Panel, there is a checkbox called "Show Overlay" that you need to uncheck. Experiment with "Clipped" as well.

  • CS5 64 bit Clone Tool Problem

If I use the clone tool or the healing brush in CS5 64 bit, after selecting the source point with the alt key whenever I move the cursor a copy of the whole mage moves, it looks like I am moving a duplicate layer. I read a similar post in the Mac forum and the response was to de-select the show overlay in the Clone Source tool box, this works but takes away a very nice feature.
The problem does not happen in the 32 bit version.

Thank you very much that did the trick, much appreciated.

  • CS5 clone tool problems

There is probably a setting I'm not seeing but when I clone the clone does not blend in like in CS3.It's very harsh. I've been to the clone menus and in the preferences settings but the clone is not working the way I like. Any help is appreciated or let me me know if I have not described the problem correctly.
    Thanks,
    Marion

Marion, can you please describe your editing environment a little better?
You speak as though the clone tool will normally "look harsh before blending in"...
That's not at all how it looks, or has looked, for me back through Photoshop version 6 and beyond.  When I clone (or do anything else) with a fuzzy-edged brush it just brushes on fuzzy.
If it is doing this for you something is clearly different between your system and others, or you're working in a way that's somehow different than others.
Are you working on the same computer with the same video drivers as when you were using CS3 and saw this behavior?  Is it a very old computer?

  • CS4 clone tool

Is anyone having trouble with the clone tool in CS4 (PC, XP)?  It just doesn't look or behave the way it does in previous versions.

Thanks, Mark.  The OP posted back in April, so hope she worked through the "new" clone behavior.  Actually, since it's dawned on me how this one behaves, I really like it, but I appreciate the tip on how to roll it back, just in case.
Also, it seems to work OK with Open GL turned on, but next time I encounter strange behavior with CS4, the Open GL switch will be the first step in the troubleshooting.  I have an Nvidia GTX 285, with the latest driver, and 9GB of memory, and the GTX 260 is on the list of tested GPUs, so spec-wise CS4 and my GPU should work fine.  Real world is another matter, and I've read of some issues with Nvidia drivers, so every time something strange happens, I think, Uh oh.
I'm glad there are those like you and Zeno with real help to offer.  Again, thanks!

  • CS4: Clone tool cursor throws shadow under cursor

Well, it's not really a shadow. It appears to be a sample of where I OPTION-CLICK. All good and fine and I guess it must be thought of as an improvement, but for me it makes the clone tool unworkable because the 'shadow' shadows my clone cursor everywhere, blocking out what's underneath so I can't see what I want to select and where I want to clone to.
Q: How do I turn off the shadow?

Tool settings are always saved after restart, and this one is no exception.
Yes its a useful feature for certain types of work, but it probably shouldn't be the default. There should also be a check box in the Options Bar for this, and maybe a keyboard shortcut toggle also. On high res files it slows things down quite a lot.

  • CS5 , the clone tool problem!

    I have noticed that in
version 12 of CS5 that the clone tool no longer accepts negative values, so on cant clone a
missing limb without having to copy, paste & filp. WHY?

Sorry Im not certain I understand your point? Are you saying this
oversight will not exist in the final release version, if you are then
how can you Know? Otherwise my point is to highlight an issue which can be debated and corrected if need be

  • Clone tool problem - the tool is darkening the source pixels

    Hello There,
I am clone stamping an rgb image at 2048 x 1152 pixels from an area or similar but clearly lighter texture. When I sample to source point and move to a darker area and apply the texture it comes out much darker than the source pixels. The clone is set to normal at 100% opacity and flow.
I worl with photoshop almost eceryday and I have saved the file out and given it another designer and the problem does not occur. So it must be a settings problem with my computer. I have re-booted the computer and copied the layer into a new file!
Very confusing but crippling me as I need to get a lot of retouching done.
Any help will be gratefully received
    John

Before reinstalling trashing the prefs should also be attempted, though.
Anyway, I can’t identify a likely cause (apart from Mark’s suspicion), either.
But I’d like to digress a bit: The number of layers (that in the Layers Panel appear quite similar) in the file seems curious to me.
Personally I like to Clone Stamp on an otherwise empty layer with the tool set to Current and Below to avoid unnecessary file-size-bloat etc.
And in case those layers represent various sharpening- (or applications other filters) steps you might be better off using Smart Filters … note the »might«, though.

  • CS4 Pen Tool problem

I'm using CS4 on a Mac OS X 10.5.5  and I can't for the life of me figure out why when using the pen tool my a anchor points are coming out the back of the pen... literally.  So when I click and think its going where I tell it to, it comes out the back.  I'm losing my mind.. any ideas ?  Please tell me I'm an idiot and it's a simple fix
    Thanks for any help

Simple enough to work out, every time you reset the screen mode (F key) it has to redraw the entire workspace. So graphics card has ro re-render
The displacement I think, although I'm not sure, may have something to do with rulers (command R), and accomodating the ruler space. CS4 is the first time they wrote all the Open GL features, and they made some decision at the start that certain older versions of Open GL could not be fully supported for some reason. If you upgrade your graphics card you will find that this problem dissappears.

  • Premiere CS4 capture tool problem

    Hello there,
I am experiencing a weird problem with Premiere CS4. I am not able to capture DV footage from my Sony DSR-PDX10P. When I open the Capture window (F5), it's working very slowly compared to anything else with the software. If I have the camera connected through firewire, it most often crashes. It does recognize the camera and if it doesn't crash, it states "stopped" but fails to show the footage when I run it. Preview screen stays black. A few times I have managed to get a record command through, whichafter Pr states "recording" but the counter stays at 00:00:00:00 and afterwards gives me "No frames were recorded" or a similar message. Anything I do within the Capture window happens like 5-10 seconds after I've given a command.
I know the problem isn't firewire-related, because OnLocation CS4 works like it should. DV footage from the camera can be watched and recorded without a problem. And the .avi files recorded in OnLocation open up in Premiere nicely. Otherwise Premiere is working just fine.
Possibly the strangest thing is that less than 2 weeks ago I used the capture function with the same camera without any problems. The only thing in my setup that has changed since was the installation of Microsoft Silverlight (which sucks but I needed to watch a video that required it - stupid move though). I have tried uninstalling it and opening a restore point before it was installed - without an effect.
I know I CAN still record footage through OnLocation, so this is not lifethreatning. I'd still prefer Premiere and of course would like to know what the hell is wrong with the capture tool. Or whatever the cause may be.
(Btw, another problem I have, more of a sidenote here but if someone would have an idea, has to do with AE CS4's RAM preview - it works once just fine, then crashes. Haven't had any problems with that before and it also worked like it should a few weeks back. Wonder if these two problems (AE and Pr) could be strangely connected? I've tried different settings (with and without OpenGL, Prevent DLL Address Space Fragmentation and different CPU/RAM level combinations) without effect - and again, with the settings I had it did work a few weeks ago)
I've started a thread once before with a CS4 problem so if need be, you can check my (unchanged) hardware data here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2488816#2488816
I'm eager to hear if someone would have an idea. Thanks!

  • Spot heal/clone tool problem

Hello, I thought when I upgraded to LR4 that my problems with the spot tool would be a thing of the past.  Unfortunately they are just as bad if not worse.  I run on a Windows 7, 64 bit, 2.6 GHz, 6 GB RAM.  Using the spot tool to clone or heal slows things down considerably (though I do notice a little slowing in general with version 4).  The longer I use the tool, the worse it is.  I start to get strange partial square shapes under the spot when I try to modify it in any way (e.g. move it a bit or change from heal to clone).  I then need to delete the spot and start over to get rid of it.  Results get uneven, and eventually the program freezes, with a clenched fist for the cursor, and I can't move any spots, or even click anything in the program (though the cursor does move).  Any ideas what the problem could be?  I do not want to use the tool at all now, which given how important it is, begs the question why am I even using this program to edit photos?

Not many, maybe 8-10 or so.  But it depends on how much I've been doing two things at once, how fast I'm moving, how long I've been working (longer I'm on it, more chance of it happening).  Seems like my computer can only deal with Lightroom when I use it at a certain, measured pace.  And I thought I was comfortably over the minimum requirements regarding speed.  Plenty of room on my hard drive (catalog on a different drive than program).  My antivirus isn't doing anything at the time, no other programs working at the time, just LR.  One thing, the fan is working OT when it happens, but I have the laptop on a cooling pad.  Seems to be getting behind and/or running out of RAM when it happens.

  • Adobe Flash CS4: Bone Tool Problems.

OK, so let's say I make a leg. The leg is composed of three
separate parts, the thigh, lower leg, and foot/shoe. If I try to
use the bone tool, which I find easier to animate with this kind of
stuff, it almost works, except for ONE problem... The "Bone" I
click and drag doesn't allow me to ANYWHERE past the symbol/object
    I'm already in.
Let's say I'm connecting the Thigh to the Knee area in the
leg example. If I try to drag the bone cursor anywhere outside the
thigh and into the lower Leg, the Bone Tool indicates I can't do
that with a Circle and a Line through it.
If I TRY to let go where I want, despite what the Bone Tool
tells me, the Stage turns gray, except for the object I was trying
to drag the bone into, and I receive this "prompt" from the Output
    tab:
Plugin tool script error in method mouseDown
If someone could please help me fix this, that would be
    AWESOME. Thanks!

Still no solutions to this? I stopped getting the error
message after installing all current software updates, but the tool
still doesn't work on multiple shapes. Symbols work fine -- just
    not multiple shapes.

  • CS2 clone tool problem..

I have reset tools, reset preferences, checked opacity, blending mode, made sure I am on a active layer, duplicated background layer, used a different file to see if the same result occurred, checked channels palette for rgb active. Done everything but re-install software, but do not see why I should need to do that when all else is good. Appreciate the help.

I just solved my own dilema dave. I had my mouse in hand when trying to utilize the tool, mouse- not so pressure sensitive as the pen. HELLO, wake up beaird!! using my pad and was not using the pen for pressure sensitive brush setting. Thanks .
