CS4 close to unusable

Hello everyone,
like others, I've already spent hours on the web looking for solutions, yet without success.
PS CS4 has numerous issues on my machine:
1. Canvas doesnt refresh (unless I switch tools)
The frequency varies, but it happens very, very often and can only be resolved via "quit/re-launch". While there are lucky moments, when PS may actually work as expected for an hour or longer, it's not unusual for it to turn fubar every few minutes.
Closing all files and restarting PS is a huge tim-eater when you have to do it multiple times per hour ...not to talk about the annoyances of having your work(flow) interrupted.
3. CPU panic
If PS runs in the background for a (considerably short) while, fans spin at max. rpm and remind me of having to shut down PS CS4 when not using it, as it causes near 90%+ CPU usage on both cores - even without any files left open.
3. Cursor alignment with Cintiq
The cursor sometimes appears to be roughly 30px off - luckily this doesnt happen too often -but again- can only be resolved with a restart.
Overall, I am hugely disappointed with the lack of product quality and stability. Especially #1 and #2 make using PS a real PITA recently.
I'm past the re-install, tried out the commonly recommended preference changes, disabled spaces in leopard.
drivers as well as software updates are all the latest official releases.
System specs:
MacBook Pro 4,1 (Penryn)
Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 GHz
GeForce 8600M GT (256MB)
RAM:   2x 2GB DDR2 667Mhz; HDD: Seagate Momentus 7200.4
Tablet: Wacom Cintiq 21UX
OS: Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a)
Photoshop v.11.0.1
Any suggestions would be much appreciated...

just in case someone coes across this thread in the future:
I found a simple cure to the most pressing issues... that is "missing canvas refresh" AND "cpu panic".
Almost to simple to be true: ALT-TAB back and forth one time. So far it always worked.
My guess is the issue lies with Exposé (f'ups some of the OS X functionality as well - e.g. Finder drag & drop in list-view... and again: a quick ALT-TAB fixes this).

  • CS4 closes after about 5 minutes

When I run CS4, after about 5 minutes ( of non-use), it closes automatically. It was working fine until last night. Any suggestions as to what is causing this? I have Windows XP Home Edition.

Some security setting in your system, most likely. Perhaps you have enabled some option in your firewall or your "Services" panel to terminate after a given time. If so, these events should be visible in your Event Log security section. You may simply need to create an exception for Photoshop and the Adobe Licensing Service. Likewise, check any virus scanner and protection tools you may be running. They may also kill off "suspicious" idle processes...

  • HELP ME!! - Flash CS4 Closes with Many Fonts

    Hi Guys ...
    I just got an error:
This is the configuration of my PC:
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 - 2.33Ghz - 2.00GB RAM - 80GB HD [/ B]
When I got the standard windows fonts installed on my PC,
Flash CS4 works normal ... but when I install my 4000 fonts (i like
fonts), and must use them, my flash failed and closes!
In Flash CS3, with the same number of fonts this error does
not occur, someone can help me with this?

doesn't matter. run a check for corrupted fonts.
there may be other reasons cs4 crashes, but a corrupted font
is the most common. it also crashes when a large fla's are loaded,
but that would seem less likely with 4000 fonts.
you could rollback your fonts to the minimum and then add 1/4
of them at a time and retest cs4. see if you can narrow down the
    font(s) causing the problem.

  • Photoshop CS4 closes after launch

I just bought Photoshop CS4 not too long ago and it has been working fine. I started it up the other day and it just came up with the whole "Photoshop CS4 has stopped working" crap. I was having some bluescreen errors due to my memory, and I thought maybe that might have something to do with it, but i got that fixed, and Photoshop is still messing up. Every time you launch it, it will stay on for about 15 seconds, and then I get the "stopped working" message, every time, never fails. I am running Windows 7 if that helps.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

Go to Start, all programs and right click on PS CS4. Click on properties, compatibility and check run as Admin, hit apply then OK to close. start PS CS4.
Ensure PS CS4 is updated to 11.0.1
If all else fails reset the prefs by the keyboard method or the manual way by reading this attachment.

  • Ps from CS4 closes on its own??

My CS4  student edition software is about a week old and has been working fine.. up until today.
When I open Photoshop it will load a blank page or I can open Photoshop by opening a picture. However, within 10 seconds it closes automatically on its own. I can open my Adobe Illustrator and it will function. I have restarted my computer and tried different methods of opening.
Do I have some sort of bug? Is there something I am missing ?

Try to trash the prefs... Usually helps. If not, you may experience a licensing error, which is best resolved with the official phone support, but you may also try suggestions on this page to reset and re-initialize your serial number.

  • Illustrator CS4 closes as soon as it is at registration box

I had installed an Illustrator CS4 in windows 8 and used successfully for a few weeks.
Now, when I open the program, it will start to load, get to the registration box (box outline only, nothing else) and then close.
I am at a loss with what to do. (not very computer literate)
Can I uninstall/reinstall the program on this machine and still use the serial number I installed it with? I'm reading all the serial number horror stories!
    Thanks for any input.

    pmmucci,
You can indeed. Apart from anything else, you can install on two computers (remember to deactivate when uninstalling).
You should reinstall using the full three step way:
Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • Illustrator CS4 closes before it opens

I've had Illustrator CS4 installed on my machine for months. Two days ago it stops working.
I read as much as I could find here, but nothing I've tried has worked.
On post suggested it was a font problem, so I deleted every font I had recently added and a few more.
Another post said to delete the preference/settings folder, I renamed it and let it regenerate.
Today, I fully uninstalled and then reinstalled.
And still, all that happens is the program opens and closes within seconds.
If I open the program, it shuts just as the welcome screen takes shape.
If I open a file, I get to see the image before it all disappears.
My stats: Windows XP Pro 2002, Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 2.80GHz, 2.79 GHz, 2.00GB of RAM
I've run out of ideas. Please help.

  • Photoshop CS4 closes on file creation / file open

    Hello,
I am running Windows 7 with 64-bit operating system. My CS4 suite has been working happily for over a year. One day Photoshop developed an issue where it will open the program, and remain open until a file is created, or a file is opened. The file will open long enough to cause the program to shut down "due to an unexpected problem". I checked for up dates, rolled back the drivers, and check all the forms to no luck.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any solutions?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forum.
Along with Noel's questions, have you added a networked printer (set to default), since when things worked?
Also, one test would be to create a manual System Restore Point for now, and then reboot to Safe Mode, and choose a System Restore Point, from when things last worked (may have to try a few, so be patient), then reboot. Test. This ARTICLE goes into more detail.
While that will not tell you WHAT changed, it might give you a time frame, and then you can do detective work.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - I'd place my bet on the video driver, but that is one of the most "usual suspects."

  • Photoshop cs4 closes after accepting licencing agreement.

Alright, so I've been using this student licensed copy of CS4 for the last 4 years or so now if this licensing page is to be believed.  In any case I have just moved over to a new computer and have been having nothing but problems installing Photoshop.  First attempts resulting in the disk just not being recognized, second batch resulting in the very helpful and descriptive "Error: 6". Now after finally getting the program to open in some respects, it just opens a licensing agreement, which I accept, and then nothing happens.
I have uninstalled and installed the program more times than I have cared to keep track of, even running the cleaner tool in between, making sure to reboot along the way.  The key has been deactivated on the previous computer, and when opening I have been doing so as an administrator.
As of now, I've searched for a solution with the closest result being how to disable the licensing agreement from popping up in the first place, which resulted in absolutely nothing happening when opening the program, and that "fix" has been reverted, and occurred no less than 1 re-install attempt ago.

Alright I'll list any specs that I think could be relavent, though I don't really know what you need so I'm just going to copy over my speccy summary.  If I need to provide anything specific or more than listed feel free to ask.

  • CS4 "Close Path" isn't there

Is it just my version?  I have a bunch of sqares, some of them are not closed (imported from elsewhere) but the nodes overlap, making it difficult to find the breaks.  I simply want to close those paths.  Illustrator Help says to go to Object > Path > Close Path but there is no "close path" (see attached image). Help?

On this page, you can download a Javascript that enables you to close multiple selected paths at once:
(Simply ridiculous that Illustrator still can't close multiple paths.)

  • InDesign CS4 freezed up and closes when editing existing files

I worked all day yesterday on a new file, layout etc.  I went into the file last night to edit it and every time I would try to edit, either copy, move , fitting, it frose and closed.
I have noticed that when I right click my mouse to get the drop down menu to make an edit this is when it freezes.

I experienced the similar problem this morning. Only, my InDesign CS4 closes.
I can start InDesign OK, but after I select a file to open it closes after just about two seconds. The same situation is with older files.
There is just one small file that loads fine. (My problem file is 185Mb)
After a few hours of playing with InDesign I moved away from it and removed the updated fonts I installed yesterday evening and everything works fine! It must be something to do with Windows 7 on this machine, because my laptop which runs Vista and CS2 had no problems with updated font.
Now I have to find out what is wrong with my font...

  • Poor RAM management in Photoshop CS4 - need help!

I have done numerous hours of research over the years only to give up and come back to this subject later on. I will try again!
I must ask: is there ANY way to get Photoshop CS4 to automatically flush used RAM after closing image files? I'm tired and annoyed of CS4 eating more and more RAM without freeing anything after an image has been closed. An image shouldn't still eat up memory when it isn't even open anymore. It seems to be terrible RAM management of the program itself and how Adobe has forgotten to write that little snippit of code to clear the RAM after an image has been closed.
I know this is not because of:
    Cache levels
Setting too large of a saved history state; purging history cache or any kind of cache still never frees RAM
A lack of updates; I have been up to date with CS4 very punctually as they were released
The computer I am on; this poor RAM management has been around since CS2 and it's the same on the last 4 computers I have used
Does CS5 still do this too?

Your historically conditioned to believe software apps should swap data a standard way. The way your using the system is probably not the most effective processing for your workflow.
    -  I have hundreds of TIFFS that take 60-120MB each in processing, and 8gb  of RAM. The more total RAM actually usable that I can use the better.  How the heck can using less of what is actually available RAM enhance my  workflow? Standard are standards for a reason. The ink industry for  printing is non-standardized and people waste $3-5 billion+ a year only  increasing on unused ink that is still remaining in their cartridges, because there is no standard way of manufacturing ink, filling cartridges, or monitoring how much ink is actually left in a cartridge. I'd love for more standards in more markets. Unless natively stable, all other programs on my computer work flawlessly with said demonized traditional methods and standards, even in high bandwidth applications a hell of a lot more intensive than  Photoshop CS4 will EVER be. Currently people keep disregarding the fact that in my situation CS DOESNT FREE THE RAM.  CS4 is balloon. Balloon inflate. Never deflate even when emptied. Overflow into other rooms of critical OS space where balloon shouldn't be when it fill the room full. How many analogies must I give? Must I use sign language? Binary?
You don’t have enough experience with these topics. This is actually a
true statement. Most companies with systems large and small have to
think about what it costs to process specific jobs. If one in a thousand
jobs swap, a decision must be made to know how much it would cost to
retrofit a very expensive environment to keep that one job swap from
occurring. Most times it is better to let the swap happen for this
non-mission critical item than pay $50,000 to upgrade all systems.
I said NON EMERGENCY SITUATIONS.  Emergencies are once in a while. You're repeating what I said like a parrot, but in different longer sentences with more words telling me I don't get what I'm talkinga bout. You're missing the full picture of what I am actually saying. That 1 in 1000 overflow would be exactly true in my situation with 7GB used, but it's not. Why not? Because the CS4 balloon will not deflate itself or reuse the empty space inside the balloon when it's needed, and the OS isn't given back any of the empty space to work with to know it doesn't need to page anything. In turn CS4 is going to try and scratch too when the OS is telling it that is has no more RAM left when indeed it does, but its hiding it in its own reserve balloon from itself. If a company needed just 700MB more room and either they spend $50k to upgrade to that, or get CS4 to release some space once in awhile, they'd sure as hell bother Adobe or write their own mod to force CS4 to release unused allocated RAM to get it.
Self inflicted only because I want to push the limit of what is actually usable on my machine, not some 'safe zone' with high tolerance. My system is tuned for a fine line of performance and I know what it can hande. I know what it uses and it does not spike usage for random OS operations. It can handle 7GB to 7.2GB of RAM of freely used RAM to one active program if it needs that big of a workspace to work. If CS4 isn't going to reuse the hollow areas in that balloon, then that's not my fault. My OS can handle the fine tuning, and CS4 is what cannot, obviously, since it can see that much RAM but not use the last %10 correctly.

  • Specified module can not be found ... CS4

I have been using the CS4 trial for just over 2 wks now and all of a
sudden I am getting this error.
The specified module could not be found.
    C:\Program Files\Common File\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4\Client\4.0.1\Version Cue.DLL
When I open a picture I get this message and CS4 closes. I have tried re installing hoping it would find the missing file, no such luck.
    I have Vista
I am sort of in a panic...I tried to go resize some pictures to order for a client, so she can have them before she leave town on the 5th and this is what happnes.
I did go down load Adobe reader 9 and it tried up update what seemed like everything Adobe. IDK I had not opened CS4 before this, but the day before it worked just fine.
    Please help Jennifer

Did you perhaps have a failed update of Version Cue 4.0.1? I had that exact same problem on my desktop. The install was successful on my laptop. If so there are at least two solutions.
    1. Copy the C:\Program Files\Common File\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4\Client\4.0.0\ folder contents to C:\Program Files\Common File\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4\Client\4.0.1\
    You won't
really have Version Cue 4.0.1 but that likely won't matter when running PS CS4.
    2. If you have a successful install of Version Cue 4.0.1 you can copy the contents of the folder C:\Program Files\Common File\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4\Client\4.0.1\ on that install to your failed system.

  • InDesign CC slow, laggy, unusable, disaster

Just updated to CC on our Macs at work just to find out InDesign is now an utter disaster.
(And don't give me that crap like: "...it draws 4 times as many pixels as a lower resolution display...". Illustrator doesn't have this issue and the GFX cards are more than capable of handling this. So it all comes down to extremely poor programming and testing before publishing.)
We have both retina and non-retina Macs at work which are now close to unusable. You basically force us to upgrade to CC if we want retina for InDesign. However no testing of usabilty seems to have been made before publishing this. Simple things like scaling a colored box and scrolling are laggy as hell. EVERYTHING is laggy. And try setting up a small eight-page folder with pics, vectors and text... This will be even more fun when I have to make Magazines or books...
Considering the whole damn advertising industry is counting on Indesign, what the hell were you people thinking when releasing this? Everything will take almost twice as long thereby be twice as expensive for our clients. Try explaining that without loosing projects/clients...
"Myeah we will now charge you double because Adobe forced us to update their software for our state of the art Macs, so they now appear slower than our Win 95 PC..." - What the fudge? We use and depend on this single program everu single day!
Also, another minor detail: I can't seem to make my usual keyboard shortcut for "next window". Or actually I'm able to make the shortcut - it just doesn't work when hitting the keys... (CTRL+Tab).
I just can't believe you are getting away with this extremely poor update. All I can use InDesign CC for right now is opening newer files and exporting them as IDML for our CS 5.5... If our software department would release stuff like this to our clients they would have been asked to go look for a new job. You are Adobe and basically (and sadly) have a monopoly in this industry - don't screw over all your customers just because you can.
Go buy your friends at Illustrator a cup of coffee and please let them help you. You need all the help you can possibly get.
    FIX IT.

Sorry, but I have to agree with Michael. When you START your first posting with these phrases...
"don't give me that crap like"
"what the hell were you people thinking "
    "What the fudge"
"don't screw over all your customers"
...you're really not asking reasonable adult questions, you're venting emotion for the sake of venting.
This is a user-to-user forum. You're not addressing the people at Adobe who make decisions. You're addressing some hard working volunteers who are InDesign users like you who are trying to help other people.
