CS4 Crashing A LOT!

FW CS4 has been crashing A LOT on both Snow Leopard (Intel MacBookPro) and old school Leopard (PPC G5). It often occurs when attempting to edit text. As soon as you place the Type tool into the existing text, you get a prolonged wheel of death and crash. Alternatively, it will also crash when doing something mundane like selecting a gradient type. Same wheel, same death.
I could be kidding myself as the the chain of events, but It has happened AFTER saving a file and will lose data if that file has not been closed after the save. This, in particular, is very disturbing.
I have done various things like tossed preferences and such. But this does not seem to slow down this issue. It has been happening at coupla times a week at least on various different source files.
Anyone have any troubleshooting strategies? CS3 did this some, but not as frequently. It's a hindrance to efficiency.

I have not uninstalled and reinstalled at this point due to the time suck involved during a busy work day. But I may have to try since there doesn't seem to be any other options for Leopard 10.5.8. I have done little on my laptop running Snow Leopard over this week to see if the issue is resolved there.
I have found numerous posting regarding the issues for Snow Leopard and Adobe's note that this issue arose in CS3. It doesn't seem that much has been done to fix it.
It is a pain as I use FW nearly every day. It has always been a solid product that I've loved until this began occurring in CS4. I have installed very little in the way of other software since the CS4 upgrade.
- Suitcase Fusion 2, plus an update that popped today
- Browser updates for Firefox and Safari
- Updates to Filezilla
- probably an iTunes update and maybe Quicktime
That's it. I don't really run much other software on the office production desktop. MS Office was upgraded before CS4.
I appreciate your efforts to assist. I wish that Adobe would do the same.
