CS4 Crop Tool Not Holding Settings

In older versions of PhotoShop you could remove just one measurement in the crop tool options (height, width, resolution) and the rest would stay. In CS 4 if we delete one measurement all the rest go away too. Is there a way around this? For instance I have my measurements set for a 12 pica wide by 8 pica tall photo with a resolution of 200. If I decided that I don't care about the height of the photo, but I do want it to be 12 picas wide, in older versions I could simply remove the 8 in the height box. In CS4 if I do that I lose all my other measurements too. Thanks for any help.

Okay found it there was clear button on the second line at the top- I was thinking it was a drop down menu

  • CS4 Clone Tool NOT Multithreading and CS4 Slow on i7 965 Processor

I noticed for the first time that the new clone tool in CS4 is not using all of my processors on my new i7 965XE processor. In fact it uses only one processor and this makes it run incredibly slow. I have also noticed that CS4 in general is rather sluggish on this hardware which is supposedly one of the most powerful processors available. I am running the i7 965XE with 8GB of Ram and still find Photoshop rather slow. I would expect it to be super snappy on this hardware, perhaps I need to optimise settings somehow, does anyone have any suggestions or is CS4 not equipped to properly address the i7 processors yet???
    Any help appreciated.
My version of CS4 is 11.0

Mike, could you take a moment to reread your original post?
    "CS4 Clone Tool NOT Multithreading"
"In fact it uses only one processor and this makes it run incredibly slow."
Those are not observations and represent two direct conclusions, both of which are incorrect. The first conclusion is that the clone tool is not threaded for multiple processors (it is). The second conclusion is that the lack of threading is what makes the clone tool run slow on your system (almost certainly not the case).
Implied in your statements is a third conclusion: that using more processors makes things faster (rarely true). That is a common enough fallacy that I felt the need to offer a more detailed explanation to help you and other readers understand more about the issues involved. I tried to keep that explanation short and simple.
I gave you an alternate hypothesis (small clone area) that could have explained your observation, since you didn't provide enough details for us to rule that out.
I also gave you more information about what is going on under the hood to help you understand why you observed what you did on processor usage.
Then I pointed you to existing topics that offer a much more likely explanation for the slowdown you are seeing.
If you had described with the clone tool slowdown without the incorrect conclusions and without phrasing most of your post as accusations, you probably would have gotten useful help from other users more quickly. Even my first instinct was to ignore your post, but it sounded like you were confused, a bit angry, and needed some help.
I am sorry you read things into my post that I did not intend. I'm simply trying to help you understand what you observed, and find a solution to the problem you described.

  • PS CS4: Crop tool settings disappear as i tab through

I just received a new Macbook Pro laptop from employer, running Mac OS 10.9.4 and have Photoshop CS 4 Extended installed. I've been using PS for decades, last version used was CS2. I've never encountered this before.
In the Crop Tool options at the top left, if I enter 10 inches wide, tab to resolution (leaving vertical clear), the width setting disappears as soon as I enter something for the resolution. Tabbing back to re-enter width, the resolution entry disappears. Back and forth, back and forth. ARRRRGH. This happens if tabbing. i think it happened on a mouse click too but when checking just now mouse click worked ok..
This happens when I focus on only the vertical and resolution settings too.
Anybody else experiencing this? My co-worker right there (pointing left) says his does the same thing (CS4 on previous generation Macbook Pro) but over the past year he's gotten used to it. Is this a new "feature"? What am i missing? I would like to work the old way which doesn't sound unreasonable to me.
    thanks

The crop tool always works like that, even though you enter precise values you can still make the selection as small/big as you like however once you accept the crop it will be the size you specified.
You could try using the Marquee tool, set Style to Fixed Size, enter the values you want and select the area you want to crop(this time it will remain the size you want it to be) and go to Image->Crop.
PPI matters only when printing, low PPI won't give you smaller files, only pixel dimensions count

  • Photoshop CS4 Crop Tool in Option field

Is there a bug using the crop tool in Photoshop CS4 (11.02) and enter values in the fields in the Option field.
Enter values for Width, Height and Resolution is OK, but if i go back to change the value in one of the fields, everything in all fields disappears if i press delete standing in on of the fields.
This must be a bug in CS4.
Do anyone knowing anything about this?

I'm going to go out on a limb and make some guesses as to what happened:
Some time during the development of CS4, someone likely got the idea that the [Clear] button and the Delete key should be the same thing, to save some time for the people who are keyboard oriented and want to quickly clear out all the fields.  And so they redesigned the UI slightly to do that.
Then people like you, after actually using CS4, complained that they didn't like the Delete clearing all the fields, and Adobe told the engineers then working on CS5 to rethink that design yet again.  But they never considered releasing it as an update for CS4 because it was actually behaving as designed.  This avoided the risk that a change might break something unexpected also.
Companies are typically very resistant to do application redesign then release the change as an update.  That's just not how the software world works.  Mostly the updates are just for bug fixes, and only the most severe.  The latest example of this is Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1.  You wouldn't know it was any different whatsoever from the pre-SP1 software, even though there were clear design flaws in the user interface.
And of course they want you to have that all-important incentive to buy the next new version when it comes out.  I'm sure they even responded, "thank you for helping us to make our product better."

  • CS Crop tool not working due to "program error"

My crop tool works when pictures are in landscape orientation but not portrait orientation. This is a new problem that has developed within the last week. 80% of my pictures are taken in portrait orientation. A message pops up that says "Could not complete your request because of a program error." Any ideas?
    Mandy

Reset the tool from the drop-down menu. If that doesn't help, reset your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • CS4 Crop Tool

I've just had my hard drive replaced and after reloading Photoshop CS4 the Crop tool isn't working as it always has?
Rather than being able to click & drag my rectangle. Now where I first click the rectangle appears & where I clicked is the bottom RH corner? When I go to change the size of the rectangle, the arrows appear but when I click it just moves the rectangle to another part of the photo, rather than being able to drag the size?
So I thought I would dup the layer, CTRL T & crop that way? Nope doesn't work either!
When I go to alter the size of the photo, the arrows appear, but when I click down it just makes the photo huge straight away, without me dragging it out that big.
    Does that make sense?
I am sure I just have a button or option checked that I have never noticed before? Not sure why it has done it on this download & not the previous one?
I have restored my Preferences, uninstalled & re-installed with no luck.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the suggestions Mark.

  • Cropping tool not working - please help

i can't figure out what the %$#* is going on with my cropping tool. when i drag it across a picture, then crop, the image is reduced to a spec. the information window defaults to a size only fractions of an inch, even though the actual picture is still at that size, for instance 8x10.
i've tried booting up several times, and even installed photoshop CS3 software again to no avail. i don't know if this is a simple fix, or if there is an inherent problem with the software. it has worked fine for as long as i've owned CS3, about a year. then suddenly the other day stopped working.
anyone ever come across this glitch, or know whom i should speak with about this problem? any insight would be appreciated.

i've scoured this site and have not found any threads that nod to my specific problem. maybe i didn't look hard enough, sorry.
thanks for your response, but i don't know how to reset crop tool. could you please advise
    thanks

  • Straightening and Crop tool not working.  What to do?

I've been working with photos all morning, and now neither my Straightening Tool or Crop Tool are working.  What to do?

Close and re-launch Aperture.  Let us know if that doesn't take care of it.
I try to close Aperture once an hour.  It pushes my hardware (and, likely, OS) to several of its limits.  Re-launching the program rinses out any crud that has accumulated (that's not _exactly_ technically correct, but ... ).

  • Preset crop tool not matching image size after crop.

I am a labtech at a community college and look after 48 mac pros in which the students use the entire creative suite. (I only mention this becuase any answers need to consider variations in system settings or photoshop settings. college students get into everything!)
But the issue is when you select the crop tool and enter a custom constraint and crop
The image size is sometimes a full 2 inches off of what you set as a crop?! I havn't run into this before, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
[I do know you can use the drop down box and use {size and resolution} but I want to know why it doesnt work under custom and unconstrained]
    Thank you again.

Looks  like you are just setting the aspect ratio. You need to enter units of measure (8 in X 9 in) to crop to a specific print size.

  • Final Cut: Cropping tool not working...?

Hey, I'm trying to crop a scene in the sequence viewer, but the cropping "logo" isn't showing up (which is making it impossible for me to crop). Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Yes, I did mean the cropping tool. It doesn't show up in the viewer. Since I'm new to Final Cut, would you mind telling me where the Motion tab is? I don't seem to see it. Thanks! Also, the X that is suppose to show up in the Viewer isn't there either...any idea why?

  • Bridge CS4. Tools not revealing whole menu

I have installed and reinstalled CS4 bridge/photoshop several times but not all of the Tools menu options are showing up. As it stands, only these appear:
    Batch Rename
    Create Metadata Template
    Edit Metadata Template
    Append Metadata
    Replace Metadata
    Cache
As I understand there should be more batch operations including the Photoshop operations?
    Thanks.

At the end of that row you mentioned should show Photoshop with a little
triangle. Pressing on this will provide a submenu with batch / HDR
    Photomerge etc.
If you don't have that first check Bridge preferences and see if under the
chapter startup scripts a checkmark is showing in front of Photoshop. If not
press on it and restart Bridge and you should be OK
If it is there or there is no Photoshop at all first try to restart Bridge
with holding down option Key and choose refresh prefs. If still no luck you
have either installed in the wrong place or a bad install. But you should
provide more details about system and place you have installed
As I understand there should be more batch operations including the Photoshop
    operations?

  • Photoshop perspective crop tool  not working

I have photoshop CS6 and used to use the perspective crop too all the time, and it worked just fine. Occasionally I would get weird results but if I just redid it, it would work properly.
lately, it give weird results ALL THE TIME. My only workaround has been to take the result into genuine fractals and redo the image dimensions. The best way to describe what is happening is that while applying the correction, the program inverts the image dimensions so that a horizontal image becomes a vertical image, all squished from side to side and elongated from top to bottom.
Is there a way to 'reset' the tool, or uninstall the tool and reinstall it? Or some way to correct this problem?  I don't want to have to reinstall the entire program because of all the plugins and custom stuff I have.

Yes, there is. Go to the Options bar, right-click on its' icon. Select "Reset Tool"

  • Cs4 pen tool not selecting previous line style

When I used the pen tool in CS3 I could select any line style (mostly arrows) and be able to make new line wih that same style. In CS4 it just creates a black line each time with the same thickness.

In the Appearance panel, click the flyout menu (Upper right) and uncheck New Art Has Basic Appearance.

  • Crop tool shows background color unless I switch to "Classic" mode

I'm not sold on the "latest" Photoshop being the best. I've seen more bugs now that I've subscribed to the "CC" version than ever before. Here's my latest issue..
When I activate the crop tool (I realize it's been rewritten.. not sure why), I see my current background color in place of what is visible in my current  workspace. Ultimately, completing the crop command, it crops as expected, and the background color vanishes. What benefit is this? It adds confusion and makes me a bit confused as to what the final crop result will be. Why was this changed? Why am I seeing my current background color? It makes no sense. I've been using Photoshop for nearly 20 years and this is just dumb. Can anyone explain?
    Thanks!
    - Sean

Yeah, that was pretty vague. I was in a creative mode and was rudely interrupted by this weird change, so I wasn't focused on a clear post. The lack of direct email support to Adobe frustrated me also. Alas..
Bascially, I have a layer with some image data, and transparent regions:
I select the crop tool, and select a region just inside the outside edge, containing the portion of the image I care about:
The background switched from being transparent to my current background color selection. I had this green chosen for some completely unrelated task. I can't find anywhere that this can be disabled. The settings I have are what I believe to be the defaults:
And, when I change the crop settings to "Use Classic Mode", the behavior is the more sensible (in my opinion) current background:
I hope that clears up the confusion. I can't imagine any use case where replacing the current visible background with the current background color makes sense. If it's a feature, I can't find any documentation, official or otherwise, that explains why this is happening.
Yes, I like the latest versions of software, but since I made the jump from CS4 to CC, I've hit more bugs than ever before. I've had to kill Photoshop a couple times in the past two months, whereas before, it never froze up or crashed on me. This feels like a bug, but if it's a feature, I'd love to know how to use the new crop tool's background settings properly.
    Cheers!
