CS4 - CS5 Upgrade? (Performance in mind)

I currently own AE CS4. Now that CS4 is out, I only want to upgrade if there are decent performance upgrades.  My thing is this, I work in primarily high resolution 1900x1080 projects, and I want to cut down the ram preview / render times as much as possible.
I'm also interested in purchasing a video card. I currently only have a GTX 275.  I've been reading up about nVidia Quadro vs. GTX 285 etc.. Ultimately I wouldn't like to spend more than $1100 together.  The upgrade to CS5 costs $299, and the nVidia Quadro 3800 I believe is around $800.
Would it make sense to upgrade to CS5?  Or should I just invest in a better video card.
Thanks

Performance improvements between After Effects CS4 and After Effects CS5 are large. See this page for information about the changes related to RAM and the move to a 64-bit application.
The video card doesn't really matter for After Effects. Spend your money on RAM first. That advice changes if you're using Premire Pro CS5, which does take advantage of CUDA technology and can therefore use some of the features of the fancier graphics cards.

  • CS4 - CS5 Upgrade Installation Question

I wanted to know if I had to upgrade pre-existing files of CS4 Design Standard ->CS5 Design Standard or if I can upgrade on a fresh install of CS5 Design Standard from the upgrade disks.
    Thanks

CS4 and CS5 can coexist. Many users keep both versions
    installed.

I am trying to install the cs5 upgrade on my new laptop, however, I cannot locate my cs4 program to install first.  Am I out of luck?

You do not need the older version installed in order to install the upgrade version, but you do need the serial number from CS4 to prove that you qualify for using CS5.  During the activation process for CS5, after you successfully enter the CS5 serial number you will be asked to select the qualifying version (CS4) from a list and to enter its serial number.
If you registered CS4 when you originally installed it then you might be able to find the serial number available in your Adobe account online in the Products section.

No, but it may help the chances of a successful installation.

  • Do I need to install CS4 full version before installing CS5 upgrade?

New hard drive in iMac. I have a full version of CS4 design premium and an upgrade version of CS5. Do I have to install both? Or can I just install CS5 upgrade and somehow use my CS4 full serial number to validate the CS5?

You have the right idea.  You do not have to install CS4.  At some point during installation of CS5 you will be required to enter the serial number for CS4 in order to confirm it as a valid upgrade installation

  • CS5 Upgrade Version Has No Acrobat 9, but my CS4 version is giving me problems

I have recently reinstalled my OS and I am trying to get CS5 working again. I had CS4 and then upgraded to CS5. When I installed my system fresh I did not install CS4 first and just gave CS5 the CS4 serial numebr when it asked for it. CS5 is working fine in all the apps that I have tried to use. The issue that I am having is that I don't have Acrobat 9 as part of that install, so I installed from my CS4 disk and only installed Acrobat Pro. It installed fine, but when I open Acrobat Pro it gives me an error stating that this application was installed as part of a suite and I need to open something from the suite before it will work. Do I have to install Photshop CS4 just to get Acrobat 9 to work? Why doesn't my CS5 Upgrade just include new install files for Acrobat 9?
Any help on this would be appreciated.

  • CS4 to CS5 Upgrade has install/configuration problems ???

(My system is running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit )
    Awile back I purchased:
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (FULL version) on the Installable DVD's.
...and just recently, last week, I decided to bite the bullit, and go for the 64-bit CS5 version upgrade.
Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (Upgrade version) -downloadable option (its cost $299.00 US)
Method 1./ Now, this seemed to be more of an installation/config issue for me. but after I ran the CS5 upgrade, it did NOT
    upgrade/change any of my Desktop icons/links ?
In other words, the same old CS4 Icons were on the desktop.
Instead, I had to goto C:\Program Files\Adobe\...CS5\..., and then create a shortcut to the CS5 executable onto my Desktop?
    Method 2./
ok, this so-called CS5 upgrade option obviously dos NOT work right.
So, I completely UN-installed CS4 and CS5, and started from scratch again, but this time I simply installed just
    the CS5 Upgrade binaries.
Well that seemed to work fine, and it also seemed to ievennstall all the 64-bit CS5 modules, though it also created some extra CS4 directories in C:\(x86)Program Files\Adobe... ? why would it do that ?
ok, well has anyone else also experienced any of this upgrade weirdness. ?
Note: I verified my Windows 7 64-bit was up-to-date, and I also "updated" CS5, actually it updates itself.
I have also had a couple "BLUE-screenies", and crashes" in CS5, none of which, in Windows I can really tell what is going on ?, and I never had these issues on CS4 on this same PC.?
I called the 1-800 number for Adobe Technical Support and basically they said the CS5 upgrade that I purchased should have worked fine. uhmmm ya'd think eh?
So, I thought this forum might be more "aware", and/or helpful regarding my Upgrading woes.
    any thoughts, would be appreciated.
    Thankyou.
    Rick.

An Adobe upgrade is an upgrade by price, only. What I mean is that you're buying a new, fully separate version of the Adobe software from whatever your previous version was, and upon installation, your previous version is left intact (hence the reason your icons did not change--CS4 was still installed).
An update, on the other hand (which is what the program automagically did), actually does replace files, but only in the version that you're updating. A semantic issue, perhaps, but an important distinction.
You can run CS4 and CS5 side-by-side if you like, but if you want to be rid of CS4 and maintain only CS5, you need to uninstall CS4--or preferably, reinstall from the OS up. I always like to start fresh when a new suite comes along.

  • CS5 upgrade should be gratis to Mac CS4 purchasers/victims?

Considering all the uselessness of Premiere and Encore CS4 on the mac, should Adobe give free CS5 upgrades to make up for its irresponsible release of a half-useful Premiere, and an utterly useless Encore?

Very simple SD projects... lots of short clips digitized from 8mm analog tape via Dv500 card
No effects (well... sometimes a slight bit of "lighten" due to dark filming) and very simple transitions or rolling titles to introduce a scene
These are home videos to make a DVD to share with family... not a real "movie" to sell
As far as encoding... I simply choose not to get into the details of AVI-to-MPG, so I always export my finished product to AVI and then have Encore use the Automatic setting, with 2-pass VBR, to create the ISO I then give to Imgburn to write the disc
But... actually... I've been thinking about the future, and reading lots of reviews, and I am now "leaning" toward buying an nVidia GTX 285 when I build my new computer, and then "someday" going to a tapeless camcorder
For fewer moving parts and better battery life, and since CS5 and my new i7 computer will "easily" edit AVCHD, I am looking at someday buying a Canon Vixia HFS10 camcorder... when my old Sony camcorder stops working or when I want to start with better video so the DVD I create looks better
So, right now, I'm looking at GTX 285 brands and reading reviews to make a selection... plus waiting to see the actual supported list when CS5 is released, to figure out if the GTX 285 will be my best buy or if some other (less expensive) nVidia model will do what I need

  • Can I delete CS4 after CS5 upgrade?

Can I delete CS4 after I installed the CS5 upgrade, or will that have a negative effect?
    Thanks

If you don't want to keep the older version:
uninstall the older version first, BEFORE installing the new version.
The Adobe Uninstallers have a nasty habit of messing with essential support files of the new version because they mistake them for the older versions.  When that happens, you have to jump through hoops just to uninstall the damaged version, as not even the Uninstaller will work on it. (You would need something called the CS3Clean Script, CS4Clean Script aor CS5Clean.  Avoid having to go there.  Honest.)
All Adobe upgrades are FULL INSTALLERS.  The Upgrade installer will simply ask you for the old serial numbers when it doesn't find an older qualifying version installed.
    Once more:
Do NOT uninstall an older version after upgrading to a new one; do it BEFORE.
    Foretold is forewarned.

  • How to install Adobe Photoshop CS5 upgrade to Lion 10.7 if I have Adobe Photoshop CS2?

I recently upgraded to a new Macboook Pro and with that upgrade am using Lion version 10.7.  On my previous MBP I had Snow Leopard installed.  Also had Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS2 installed on that and then later upgraded to CS5 on that machine.  Now with Lion I am unable to do that.  I aware of the technical hurdle.....Lion does not support Rosetta or PowerPC applications and therefore I cannot load CS2 on there initially and then upgrade to CS5.  So does this mean that I am screwed unless I buy a full version of Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 to put on Lion?  Or is there a workaround?
I still have the old MBP so I could migrate all the files from the old computer to the new computer.  Short of that is there any other workaround?  If I gave the serial numbers of CS2 and the CS5 upgrade to a rep at Adobe could they unlock CS5 for me so that I can download it to my new MBP?
On another note does anyone think about backward compatibility anymore?  Has Apple totally lost its mind?  And will Adobe cash in on this opportunity?  Is it too much to ask for a representative from Adobe to get back to you after posting your callback number?  Customer service does not exist.....its is unprofitable to actually "serve" customer because a customer is a tool to be exploited as are all resources in a corporation.
This is American corporatism at its finest.  You have a software monopoly with Adobe on one hand along with a computer manufacture that is not competent enough to produce a backward compatible operating system.  If these companies operated for the consumers benefit they would be out of business.
There is no way I'm paying for a new version of the Adobe software.  Surely someone can understand my frustration and that this frustration is be being echoed by hundreds of users.  But apparently we are stupid right?  We are stupid because we just want to be able to smoothly transfer stuff that we have paid so much for to a new operating system but cannot.  And thats because on a whim it all changes.

Shaidipur when you install Photoshop CS 5 it will request your qualifying serial number.  Assuming you purchased the proper update simply type in your Photoshop CS2 serial number.
In regards to compatability I believe their is a maximize compatibility option within Photoshop.  For further details I would recommend posting your question into the Photoshop forum.

  • CS5 Slow performance

    Hi There,
I'm trying to track down the source of slow CS5 performance and wondered if anyone else was experiencing this?
Personally, I've always found Illustrator slow when images are involved but I really want to use the new align to pixel grid feature for web wireframes and visuals before coding.
The issue we're experiencing is having to wait 1 - 1.5sec between mouse clicks. If we don't wait for Illustrator to catch up, Illustrator will select or move the wrong items. This is the same when in outline mode and on two 10.5.8 machines - A Quad Core Xeon with 8GB of RAM and a 17" Macbook Pro with 8GB of RAM.
Has anyone experienced this? I currently have 3 layouts that use masked images and transperancy (nothing crazy and not more than I would use in Photoshop) but had hoped Illustrator could handle images based on the new tools aimed at web designers.
Fireworks has always had too many bugs (I try it in earnest every 6 months) and Photoshop tends to result in "Layer Hell" but if Illustrator isn't up to the task I guess Photoshop is still the only way to go.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

  • Using Photoshop CS4/CS5 and Lightroom 2/3 on Win 7 vs OSX

I do NOT want to re-ignite the no-win discussion of pc vs mac. Now that CS5 is announced, yet again as I preprare to upgrade from CS4, I ask if I should convert fromWin7 64-bit on a PC to MAC Pro running OSX. I currently run a WIN 7 64-bit PC with 8 GB Ram. I would consider buying a MAC PRO with 8 GB RAM. The machine(s) are used strictly for image processing, no general office work or general internet surfing except as relates to supporting my software, etc.
I don't want to discuss PC vs MaC but I would like to understand the limits, advantages/disadvantages of one platform vs the other as specifically relates to CS4/CS5 and/or Lightroom 2/3. In other words are there functions or processes that I can do on one platform and not the other, or do better on one compared to the other, not does one cost more than the other any comments or help?? Mike

As a casual user of CS products, I find no substantive differences between using them on a Mac vs. PC. I can cross post this question over to the Photoshop forum (originally posted to the Photoshop.com web site forum, which is not just about the desktop app).
It's probably going to become a Mac vs. PC discussion, since the question is inherently 'which is better', but hopefully people will remain objective and constructive!

  • CS3 to CS5 upgrade

I need to upgrade my CS3 Design Premium to CS5.  Adobe no longer directly sells this upgrade so I am forced to use resellers.
Question 1)  I have read posts that there IS a difference between a CS3 to CS5 upgrade versus a CS4 to CS5 upgrade.  But, I have received conflicting opinions from Adobe via customer service.  Is there still a difference between the upgrade packages?
Question 2)  Many of the resellers do not specify the difference (if there is one).  Is there any way to be assured of which version?  Does it say on the box?   The difference in price makes this a rather important question.

  • Question about CS5 Upgrade from CS3

    Hi everyone,
I have Adobe CS3 and want to upgrade to CS5.  I noticed Staples are selling the CS5 upgrade version for a decent price.
But it doesn't state if it's for CS4 or CS3/CS2.  I contacted them, but they said they are both the same.... but I don't know if I can believe them.
Is the upgrade version for CS4 and CS3/CS2 the same thing in retail outlets? (i.e. you can enter in a CS4, CS3, and CS2 serial number for the same disc or is there separate products for each previous version - i.e. CS4 upgrade is different than a CS3 upgrade?)
I noticed when you buy it from the Adobe Store or even other sites like Newegg, they are marked as 'CS4 Upgrade' and 'CS3/CS2 Upgrade'... but on Staples its only 'Upgrade' and they told me it 'probably works for CS3 as well'.
Link to product on Staples site:  http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=&webid=885931&affixedcode=WWhttp://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?webid=885938&CatIds=&AffixedCode=WW
    Your help is greatly appeciated!
    Thanks!

The upgrades are different in that they require different serial numbers for the upgrade. I don't believe you can use the CS 4 upgrade if you only have CS3. Call Customer Service to get an official response.
