CS4; do I have to render each sequence?

I have 7 sequences, and wonder if I have to render each one individually, prior to sending to Encore via Dynamic Link?

If the underlying media (sequences and/or clips) need to be rendered but aren't, FCE will have to render them during export. Not the ideal time to be rendering, as it will at a minimum increase your export time. Plus if you export unrendered material to a QT reference file, the rendered material will be put in the reference file itself. Not what a reference file is intended for.
You should investigate why your second sequence needs to be rendered if the material in sequence 1 did not need to be rendered. Does sequence 2 have a different sequence setting (easy setup)? Did you apply filters to the items in sequence 2? You mentioned adding graphics - if they are non-standard size and you allowed FCE to autoconform the sequence (#2) when you inserted the graphics clips, that could be the cause of the need to render everything.
With FCE, it is best to have all media clips be the same codec (DV or AIC) and frame size - it minimizes problems. Also render as you go along, not at export time.

Do I have to render every sequence?

So here's the situation, and I am trying to obtain as close to HD as I can.
I import my ACVHD footage from my sony cameras into FCE. I then place these into my timeline which I name Sequence 1. I move them around and edit how I'd like. Then I create a new sequence which I call Sequence 2. I drag Sequence 1 down into my Sequence 2 time line so I have a nice clean work space on one track. I then add a few graphics here and there. For purpose of this question, I know my graphics should have been the correct sizes but they are what they are. Sequence now is entirely red barred for me to render, but I don't. I then create another new sequence which I will call Sequence 3. When I drage Sequence 2 from my browser into Sequence 3, that too is red barred. But I add some more graphics into Sequence 3. Now I render Sequence 3 so all is good. So I want to export Sequence 3 into a quicktime movie. Since Sequence 3 is fully rendered, do I need to have Sequence 2 rendered to obtain maximum quality? Or since Sequence 3 is comprised of Sequence 2 as long as I export Sequence 3 everythign is all good? Or do I need to render each sequence as I build the project?

Why do i constantly have to render each change!?!

Hi,
I'm pretty new to final cut, my only previous experience of video editing is imovie.
however, im finding editing very tedious, due to constantly having to render almost every change.
i am working with low res AIC clips, 640x480, and they play back fine in the viewer. however, on the timeline, they appear with a red bar above, meaning i cant play them back in real time? but i just did! this is with no effects/transitions, just the plain clip. i can render it and play it back fine in the canvas, but if i add one of the supposedly real time rendering transitions, the ones listed in bold, they get a red bar and need rendering.
now i know my 1.83, 1gb mac mini isnt a monster of power, but surely it can playback footage without needing to render it? surely it can playback a simple cross fade with no need to render? imovie can!
im convinced there's simply something wrong with how im working, please let me know if you have any ideas.
other than this, im finding the power and flexibility of final cut awesome, it opens up a new dimension.

unfortunately, fce doesn't work like imovie in that it will render automatically while you're working. However, a nice way to get around this is to turn your RT settings to unlimited (on the left of the timeline) while you're doing most of the editing, then when you're done turn the settings back to safe and render it all out. This allows you to play it (albeit a little slower) after changing some things without having to render it out all the time.

When I drop anything into the timeline I have to render it to view it.

I am working with 2 sequences in one project. In one sequence I can drop images, video clips, text onto the timeline and I can view it, showing a green line. No problem. I switch to the other sequence and every time I do anything to the timeline I have a red line and have to render each and ever clip to review the work I just did. I don't understand why the two are different. Any suggestions? Thanx

Your clip settings MUST match your timeline settings. If you have DV/NTSC material, you need a DV/NTSC timeline. The frame rate, audio rate and dimensions (4:3, 16:9) all need to match exactly. In Final Cut Pro 6, this is easy, because when you drop a clip into the timeline, it asks if you want to set up the timeline to match the settings of the first clip you drag into it. Click YES and you are ready to go.
However, in FCP 5.1 and earlier, it is a bit trickier.
The most important thing you need to do is properly set up your project from the start, and the best way to do this is to choose a setting from the Easy Setups, located under the Final Cut Pro menu.
Once you do this, you’ll need to create a new sequence. This is because the sequence that is already in your new project is setup for the typical default setting of DV/NTSC, or for the settings of your last project, which might not match what you are currently working with. So delete SEQUENCE 1 and create a new sequence:
This new sequence will contain the settings you chose in the Easy Setup menu, and should match the format you captured.

Why do I have to render everything??

Hi there,
I am very new to both Mac and Final Cut Express. I got final cut a few days ago now and a friend of mine has asked me to chop up some video for him.
It was originally a .VOB file so I've used a converter to convert the files into .MOV (QuickTime) and imported them into FCPE. My problem lies with the fact that I have to render each of these clips as soon as I put them in and then again when I apply any effects. I see this as a lot of hassle for such simple tasks, am I doing something wrong?
I used Sony Vegas on Windows before and there was significantly less rendering to be done.

Absolutely. The key to not having to render is to make sure the media you bring into a project and place on the Timeline matches the Sequence settings exactly. So when converting a DVD's VOB files, use MPEG Streamclip to convert to QuickTime DV/DVCPro or to AIC, whichever your Sequence is set for. Usually you'd use QuickTime DV for standard definition footage and AIC for high definition footage.

Once all the footage in the Timeline matches the Sequence settings, you shouldn't have to render anything for playback until you've added enough effects that your system can't keep up with (filters, transitions, composites, layers, etc). Of course, some media like still images are video and will always need to be rendered for output as video.

I always have to render video?

I recently digitized video and when I edit with the video, I have to render each shot that I place on the timeline? Is there a setting I need to change on my computer?

Importing leaves me with audio a few seconds off and I still have to render

When I import the last few times, I have to render the sequence after wards. this means that I cannot edit from the sequence in the file. Frustrating! Also, my sound is always a few seconds off after I import. So I have to shift the sound or the video over to match.
Anyone know why is this happening?

That is all the details that I can think of putting up. Oh and I have 400gigs available on my drive if that makes any difference.
Also, i just digitized again, but only for one minute of footage and it was fine. So I cheered and said yahhhh! So then I went to digitize the entire one hour tape again, and the sound is still off.
so I though maybe it drifted because for some reason it didn't record at the same rate. But the beginning is off by the same amount as the end and middle. I just don't get why this is happening. I export and save the sequence, I can then edit from the browser, but it is my understanding that I will lose some quality that way.
So, until I can figure this out, I'm stuck with editing by browsing the footage in the actual timeine instead of the browser. eeeeeek!

Why do I have to render all of my HDV 1080i60 MultiCam Sequence

I have two HDV camra angle's in my multicam sequence.
I did realtime cuts between them but why do i need to render the whole sequence. I have half an hour of HDV, that takes along time. It also take's hours to render a portion of the video that i sent to motion for titling. This is really slowing me down.
Do you always have to render a multicam sequence?

No it wouldn't have to render except for effects that aren't real time.
The problem with HDV is it's not an all "i" frame format. Only 1 in 15 frames is a whole frame, the rest of the frames only contain the difference between the frames before and after (sort of)... but if you don't edit on an i frame, the video has to be rewritten in effect, creating a new GOP structure. (Group of pictures with an i frame every 15... in long gop anyway... there's short gop too.)
Most all other codecs are all i frame codecs.. every frame's information is there... so it's easier for the computer to deal with it.
DVCPROHD will create files about 4 times larger than HDV, but they're still small enough to play from a firewire drive... no need for a fast array.

GoPro3 sequence settings still have to render?

I have converted all my files with MPEG streamclip, I've changed my sequence settings and I still have to render my video clips when I bring them into my timeline, why?! So frustrating!

I can't render my sequence anymore. How can I fix this?

I'm used to Final Cut Pro, but my employer wants me to make a promotional video for them on their computers using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. I've been using it for a few days now but now it won't let me render my sequence anymore. I try going to "Sequence" and then click on "Render Effects in Work Area" or "Render Entire Work Area" but nothing happens; it just starts playing from the beginnign without rendering. I'm pretty sure I haven't changed any settings, but is there a setting that could have changed? It's becoming a problem since I'm not able to watch what I'm editing. I've tried restarting the computer and closing any other programs, but that hasn't seemed to work. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Have you got a Work Area Bar set other wise it will not render.

Please help me as I am relatively new to FCP. I import my movies through QuickTimePro - with settings DV/DVCPro-NTSC; and my sequence settings in FCP are NTSC DV (3:2). With these setting I am required to render each clip. What am I doing wrong? Please help.

Imported how? Let's clear up some terminology. CAPTURE is when you capture footage from your camera. IMPORT is when you bring in already existing footage, like music files, graphics or pictures.
So what exactly are you doing?
OH...after you choose your EASY SETUP, delete Sequence 1. That has the settings the project was using before you switched easy setups. Create a new project and you should have the correct settings.

How do I add web app tags to web app fields and have them render correctly?

- I have a webapp field entitled "Status".
- I have a webapp fields entitles "Status-Listed".
- I want to have a tag in the description field that is {tag_Status-{tag_Status}} to where if the Status field is set to Listed the result will be {tag_Status-Listed} and will return the value in the Status-Listed field.
- It works, and returns the value:

I am not sure I follow what you are explaining, but, I will try to give you an idea. Wrap all of your HTML in a div with a class of {tag_Status-{tag_Status}}. you can then style as necessary. However, if this involves hiding certain elements, then I would suggest using a custom template for each type of listing.

How do I find images in LR 2.4 (imported from CS4 Bridge) that have color labels already assigned In CS4 Bridge? I have set both Bridge and LR color labels text to match (eg Green for green, etc).

I have set both LR 2.4 and my CS4 Bridge to match the text for each color to be the same (eg. Green for green, etc), and the filter search in LR 2.4 shows that a label has been assigned, but I am unable to identify and locate the specific images in LR 2.4 that have had a color label assigned from CS4 Bridge. I have tried to search via attribute, metadata, text, etc...Is it necessary to re-assign color labels all over again, image by image, in LR 2.4, or is there a way to automatically have the color labels assigned in CS4 Bridge be assigned and searchable to the images after they have been imported into the LR 2.4 catalogue from the Bridge program?

I closed both programs and re-imported photos and re-tried the action of having LR read the XMP metadata from the CS4 files, and it seems to work now just fine...don't know why now and not before, but thanks much. Is there a way to have LR do this automatically upon import of images from CS4? I tried to do this with an import metadata preset, but no luck. It seems as if I can only do this once the images have already been imported into LR, and then to have to have LR read the metadata from the CS4 Bridge files. thanks gain.

Hi. The two user tips both describe a sequence of steps that should get your library from the point where it threatens to wipe data from your device to where it is syncing normally, while recovering as much information as possible. It may still be necessary to wipe and reload the device but this should only take place once all the data that can be recovered has been recovered.
Doing step 1 of 8 and then complaining things aren't the way you want them to be yet strikes me as premature...
Since you appear to have all your media content, and we are discussing an iPod classic, not an iOS device, the main worries are already taken care of. What's left is ratings, playcounts, playlist membership and checked status. Since your device holds only part of your library at best you could only recover the missing data for the content that is on the device using third party tools.
Recreating the previous checked/unchecked status of every track in your library from where you are now may not be that easy. Syncing with selected playlists has many advantages, one of which would have been that you would have a named playlist that could have been retrieved by 3rd party software if you had used this method.
You haven't explained what caused your problem in the first place, but if you have a Previous iTunes Libraries folder holding old copies of your iTunes database (generated with each iTunes update) then it would be possible to restore the most recent of these and then update the library with any changes in your media folder.
BTW Apple doesn't offer free support for this kind of issue with iTunes.

I keep getting "codec error" when trying to render my transitions. I tried changing my codec but then I have to render my entire footage.

The first screenshot is my raw footage info.
The second screenshot is what I set my sequence to. This made me able to edit without rendering, but now that I am putting in transitions, I have to render and when I try to render it says "codec error". Anyone know what I'm missing?

When I go to Easy Setup I don't see ProRes there either.
