CS4 Drop Shadow Troubles

I can't seem to get a Drop Shadow to show. I choose the Layer, add a Layer Style via the Effects button. It shows in the Layers Palette but not on my photo
Thanks!

Paulo has one possible reason that you're not seeing your Drop Shadow.
There could be other reasons. Please give us details about the Layer structure of your image, what is one each one, and their Blending Modes, plus details on the Layer, to which you are applying the Effect. Next, what are the settings for your Drop Shadow Effect? The answers to these questions will likely direct you to the exact "fix."
Good luck, and I'll be looking for your report.

  • Indesign CS4 drop shadow fail

I have numerous .psd photos in on each page, all closecropped in Photoshop using a mask.
I have applied a drop shadow to these in Indesign and most look great  - but the odd one has the dropshadow cut off abruptly for no apparent reason.
Any ideas why this would happen? I can't seem to fix it.

There is a much easier workaround that doesn't require altering your image files at all: simply draw a basic object (eg an empty square) on the pasteboard to the right of the page, then group your image with the object and apply your Drop Shadow effect to the group - this forces the shadow draw error off the page, without adding more data in the way that extending a Photohop image canvas would.
It's not ideal, but then again ideal would be Adobe publishing software that actually works the way it's supposed to...
Also to BobLevine, there is a very easy way to make shadows in Photoshop files blend correctly in InDesign: first create your Photoshop file with two layers, Object and Shadow. Place the .psd onto your InDesign page, and Copy (NOT Cut) it to the clipboard. Select "Object Layer Options" and turn off the Object layer, then set the image to Multiply. Paste In Place to put a second copy of the image file on the page directly over the first one, select the second image, and this time in Object Layer Options, turn off the Shadow layer leaving the Object blending normally. Finally group your two images.
Voila, one .psd in InDesign with a correctly blending drop shadow.

  • Help, Drop Shadow filter with strange glares in CS4

    Hi,
I've made a symbol for a logo design in Ai CS4 in wich I applyed some Drop Shadows to some elements (white arrows).
The problem is, when I enlarge the symbol (approximately 110 x110 mm), strange glares/"ghosts" appear around the elements that have the Drop Shadow applied to.
There are no Pantones in this, just CMYK colors.
    See the image please: http://www.grabup.com/uploads/01773c95e72416002699e3d3e4800428.png
(the strange glares/ghosts are the ones pointed by the red arrows, the Drop Shadow dialog box, corresponds to the red highlighted white arrow on the left with the blue drop shadow.)
When I turn to Outline mode there are no vector paths there, so it only shows this glares/ghosts in normal/preview mode.
This only happens when I enlarge this elements, and the Blur (in the drop shadow) begins to have a large number applied to it (example: blur: 9 mm).whn I Rasterize or Expand Appearance the elements with this drop shadows, the rasterized image maintains the strange glares/ghosts.
    The glare/ghosts completely disappear when:
    - I reduce the size of the logo/symbol;
    - In the Drop Shadow dialog box: Instead of the Color, I choose Darkness (but I need this to have a blue color in shadows not grey/black).
    - In the Drop Shadow dialog box: I reduce the size of the Drop Shadow Blur (with 5mm or less of Blur, the glare/ghosts vanish)
    Is this a Illustrator bug?
The only solution for this is to reduce the amount of Blur aplyed to the drop shadows elements?
If so, what happens when I have to enlarge this logo to a bigger size, say... an Outdoor?
    thank you!
    (sorry for my english)

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for your reply (very prompt!)
Yes I read that article and thankfully was already exporting using Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4) so that wasn't an issue.
So now I'm waiting on the printer's reply as I've emailed him a link to that article!

  • Drop Shadows and Transparency in Illustrator CS4

    here's what's happening in Illustrator CS4.
    Create a new document
    In Attributes, check overprint fill
    Add any text
    Apply a drop shadow
Dave as Illustrator EPS - during save, set Overprint to "Preserve"
Once saved, you get the dreaded white box behind the drop shadow.
Is there any way to preserve transparency in Illustrator CS4 when applying a drop shadow?

First why are you using eps which does not support transparency except as one bit?
Why not as ai or pdf?
But you can try to use a tiff preview and select transparent there but Macintosh preview should make it so automatially.
here is the difference the top is the eps and the bottom .ai

  • Trouble adding drop shadows to buttons

I am creating DVD menus for the first time in Encore CS4. I want the (=1) version of the buttons -- when you put the cursor over them-- to have a drop shadow so I added one in my Photoshop file. But the effect does not appear when I preview it in my Encore project. And when I tried to add it within Encore, it wouldn't let me. (The "drop shadow" option appeared gray and un-clickable.)
Is it possible to do what I'm trying to do? If so, any ideas how?

Unfortunately, there are grave limitations, regarding what can be part of a Sub-picture Highlight. It can ONLY be 8-bit color on a DVD, and can ONLY have one level of Transparency/Opacity.
There are some workarounds, such as duplicate Menus, linked from an Auto-Activate Button, but in your case, you might get what you want from some tips in this ARTICLE. It starts with "Punching a Hole in Sub-Picture Highlights," but does cover adding a "Glow," that appears to be a Gradient. It is not, but rather looks like it is. You could substitute that Gradient Glow for your Drop Shadow.
Good luck, and hope that it helps,

  • When I create a new polygon with applescript in in design cs4, I want to make a drop shadow

when I create a new polygon with applescript in in design cs4, I want to make a drop shadow
    Is it possible?
I am working with MAC OS 10.6.7 and CS4
    Can somebody help me?

Adding a drop shadow should work fine regardless of shape… As Im a big fan of using styles everywhere I can…
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS5"
    activate
    tell the active document
set GotNoStyle to make new object style
set properties of drop shadow settings of fill transparency settings of GotNoStyle to ¬
    {mode:drop, distance:3, angle:135, spread:0, blend mode:multiply, opacity:50, honor other effects:true, x offset:3, y offset:3, knocked out:true, use global light:false}
set SomeFill to the last swatch
    tell the first page
make new rectangle with properties ¬
    {fill color:SomeFill, geometric bounds:{10, 10, 30, 30}}
apply object style (the result) using GotNoStyle without clearing overrides
make new oval with properties ¬
    {fill color:SomeFill, geometric bounds:{10, 40, 30, 70}}
apply object style (the result) using GotNoStyle without clearing overrides
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
You can then edit the object style to make global changes… Sorry my values were for my euro metric head…

  • Golive: Troubling drop shadow on text.

When viewing a Golive web page in Safari, or even an old IE browser, some type (which I assigned a color to) looks fine, but in Firefox, a drop shadow of the same color is being created. I see nothing that could possibly cause this. Any thoughts?

GoLive is an application to create webpages with.
It's a product by Adobe, not Apple.

  • Drop shadow on text box - CS4

I'm trying to set up a drop shadow on a text box, but the shadow shows through the text.  The effect I want is essentially a shadow on the right side of the box, and one at the bottom, not showing through the text.  I'm attaching a screen shot.
Obviously I've got something set wrong, but I've played with the "transparency" settings and nothing changed.
    Thanks for your help................

Select the frame, then go to the swatches panel...

It looks like there's a function in a document-level JavaScript named SetFieldValues that you need to copy over as well. I don't know the exact menu item for Acrobat 8, but for 9 it's: Avanced > Document Processing > Document JavaScripts

  • Trouble with Drop Shadow in "Web" Documents

Long ago I edited my <Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings\New Document Profiles> to add my copyright metadata and a few other things. I could swear that the Drop Shadow effect worked in all of the document types at that time.<br /><br />Now for some reason if I create a "for Web" document (RGB), I can add the Drop Shadow effect, but it isn't visible as far as I can tell. All of the other document types (e.g. "for Print") allow me to create drop shadows.<br /><br />Anyone have a clue what's going on here?

Interesting. Drop shadow effect works in all versions I tested (not well as
a .gif but it was visible)
So I added copyright data (I don't know what a few other things are) and it
still works fine in all document types.
I would suggest restoring to the defaults, get the drop shadow to work
again, then ad one thing back to your profilse at a time and see which thing
    breaks it.

  • Copy/Paste graphic w/drop shadow to indesign - loses transparency

See above image.. I made a vector version of our company logo in illustrator (all programs referenced are cs5 btw) and it looks great, but when I copy and paste from Illustrator to InDesign, it loses the transparency around the logo. If I place the logo instead, it works fine. The trouble is there are about 16 variations of the logo, and its MUCH easier to copy/paste from one aggregate file instead of having many different logo files to place.
Background on how the logo was created: The inner circle area is multiple different gradient layers (some with transparency masks as well). The white line around the outside is an expanded stroke, and it had a drop shadow effect applied (Stylize menu), which I expanded so it would scale properly when scaling the logo up and down. Here is a link to download the logo: download logo
Q: Is there any way to make InDesign preserve the transparency when I copy and paste?
Would be eternally grateful if someone has a solution that allows me to copy/paste!

I agree with Bob's suggestion to use separate "layer groups" in your logo file for different styles. I also use separate layers inside InDesign to "multi-purpose" company documents with different backgrounds, graphics, and content. But that's the only way I use layers inside InDesign – Not for general placement of image files! I also disagree with ability to copy and paste graphics from Illustrator with drop shadow. Here's an .ai logo which I quickly added Drop Shadow to in Illustrator CS4, and then a Copy and Paste into InDesign CS4 document. Best workflow practice is to 'Place' image files as Bob suggests, linking them from a separate file folder.
For something "quick and dirty" I see no problem with Copy and Paste, but your success may vary based on OS, and CS versions you are using!  Sometimes it is wiser to take a few shortcuts to hit rather than miss that deadline!

  • Using Bridge to Camera Raw to Open Image button also drop shadow problems

I remember when I was working with RAW in PSE 8. I would be in Bridge looking at a pic and double click on it. PSE 8 would open in Camera RAW and I could play with the pic a bit, make some adjustments, then click on OPEN IMAGE. When I did that it would open in PSE and it would be in jpg format. With this PSE 9 and the updated Camera RAW 6.3, when I punch OPEN IMAGE I still have a picture labeled .CR2 which I think still means RAW. When I double click in Bridge the .CR2 pic shows as 8 bit depth. I can do a little more work on it and use SAVE AS. When I do that, the sample file name that shows is still in .CR2 format and I must change that to .jpg and then below change from PHOTOSHOP to JPEG to save my file as a jpg file. Is there something that I have to change in preferences to get it to open the image in jpg format when I hit the OPEN IMAGE button? Or, is this an "improvement" with RAW 6.3? Also, I seem to be having trouble adding a drop shadow (or any other effects) on jpeg pics. At least it doesn't show up on the screen after I apply it. I just recently updated to Camera RAW 6.3 and updated my Operating system on my iMac computer to OS 10.6.6. I emailed this request to my good friend with an identical setup on his iMac and he is having the same response when performing the above operations. Any ideas what the problem might be?

Okay, previously you seem to have been using the bridge version of camera raw to edit your raw photos. That has many more options than the PSE version of the raw converter. (If you still have PSE 8, you can see the difference by using File>Open in the editor to open a raw photo for the PSE version of ACR, which works the same way in PSE 9.) In PSE's raw converter, you use the Open button, then save your photo in an image format in the editor. The Save button in ACR in PSE is only the DNG converter.
Layer styles should work exactly the same way as in PSE 8. However, in any version of PSE a drop shadow, like a real shadow, needs someplace to fall, so unless there is empty space on the layer, it won't appear. Try creating text or drawing and simplifying a shape and adding a drop shadow. Does it appear then?
Also remember that Jpegs won't let you save either layers or transparency when you resave the file.

  • Drop shadow issue in Distiller 9.0

InDesign CS4 has 2-color title, which has Pantone Orange (spot color) and Black (Process Color). The design has two objects, first object has set as Pantone and second object has set as Black on top of the Pantone object and it has Drop shadow too. The drop shadow (Black - Process color) does not appeared on Pantone object while converting PS through PDF whereas the exported PDF from InDesign converted wonderfully. I have attached an images (turned on/off Overprint Preview) for your reference. You can see the difference when you turn on/off "Overprint Preview" in Acrobat. Also thin white rule appeared. Actually the rule should not appear in the PDF. Any help much appreciated.

What happens if you print one page with the drop shadow together with only one or two pages that don't have the drop shadow? What color mix are your drop shadows?  Like Peter suggested, check the corresponding compression settings in your distiller preset. Heck, check all the compression settings in those presets. I had to use PS to work around some issue once and distinctly remember a problem with the presets making my grayscale elements look low-res because compression was set too high in a preset that was supposed to be high quality.
Then again, just use Peter's workaround.

  • Logo with Drop Shadow on Unwhite Background

This is simplified for this discussion. Imagine a logo that's a yellow circle with a line of red type across the center of the circle slightly wider than it's diameter. Now apply a black drop shadow to the type. I did this in ID CS4 and brought it into Illy, converted it all to outlines and made a few tweaks. All is fine if the logo is on a white background, But if it's not, there is a white box around on the drop shadow where the type is wider that the circle.
Is there such a thing as a vector drop shadow?
In most instances, I will be using this in other ID programs so I might be able to bypass the Illy step and just copy the logo from one ID document to another. But the logo is also being sent out to others to use and their backgrounds might not be white.
    Suggestions?

There is nothing wrong with drawing spot graphics in InDesign. (Why do you think it has tools for doing so?)
I did this in ID CS4 and brought it into Illy
What does "brought it into" mean?
If you copied/pasted, check your InD clipboard prefs. Do you have the option for copying PDF content turned on?
The reason such things work from AI to InD is because InD is importing the PDF content embedded in the AI file (or copied to the clipboard). The same thing works in the opposite direction.
But going either direction, the conversion to PDF "normalizes" the objects that are created using app-specific features. So so-called "live effects" become simpler constructs. The kind of constructs PDF can handle differ with the various versions of PDF, too.
Is there such a thing as a vector drop shadow?
    Of course there is.
The more pertinent question is "Is there such thing as vector transparency?", which is necessary for the soft-edged fuzzy effects which most people mean nowadays when they say "drop shadow." The two shadows above are all vector. The top hard-edged one was created by the Drop Shadow Filter. The soft-edged fuzzy one is a Blend. They were drawn in Illustrator, exported to PDF (without AI editability), and then opened again in AI. They were still all vector objects after the round-trip to PDF.
So can the rasterization of transparency applied to vector objects be postponed until RIP time? (Everything is eventually rasterized—it's a question of when.) Evidently so. Again, the capabilities would differ between different PDF and (I assume) Postscript versions.
