CS4 fast on laptop, slow on desktop

Hi all
This is my first post in this forum. I've been struggling with this problem for a while now and have searched the internet and this forum with no obvious solution.
I'm running LR3 and PS CS4. On my laptop, this combination flies. But on my desktop, everything is very slow. I'm a photographer and am finding it impossible to do any work on my desktop as everything takes so long. For example, saving a single-layer uncompressed tiff takes about 20s, whereas the saving the same tiff on my laptop is almost instant. Switching tool, for example, from brush to clone stamp, can often takes up to 10 secs. With LR3, whilst moving from one photo to another, "loading" takes forever on my desktop, but is fast on my laptop.
My specs:
Desktop:
Windows XP Pro, SP3
Intel Quad Core Q9950 4 x 2.83Ghz Core 2 Quad;12Mb Cache
4GB RAM
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB
Monitor: LG L226WTQ
Laptop:
Sony Vaio
Windows 7
4GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS
I have even done a clean re-install of Win XP, and have installed just Photoshop. Nothing else. Still the problems remain.
I don't mind having to upgrade my desktop. The difficulty is knowing which is the culprit. I don't want to spend money upgrading to Windows 7 if it doesn't solve the problem.
Any advice?
Have a good Christmas!

Yes, sorry, I missed that.
Damaged blocks on the hard drive could certainly be a problem, but you would see it in the form of errors in the Windows System Event Log.  The CHKDSK command (specifically CHKDSK /R) can be useful for updating the bad block map and keeping your system from trying to use those blocks.  Read more about CHKDSK before using it here:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730714(WS.10).aspx
Are you seeing about what you expect as throughput to and from the drives?  The File Benchmark tab is useful for that.  How do your two systems compare?

How do I transfer my iTunes library from an old, slow pc laptop to a new(er), faster pc laptop? Do I have to make a copy of the iTunes library on the old pc laptop and re-install it on the new(er) pc laptop? Is it something that can de done using the actual iPod itself?

This is the method I would normally recommend:
Backup with this User Tip, restore the library to the new computer using the same tool, keep the backup up-to-date in future. Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer need to access protected content on it.
You can use your iPod classic to move your library to a new computer but if you don't already have a backup copy of the library (and your other important data) now is the time to think about it.

  • Can I transfer updates from my laptop to my desktop computer?

Due to the slow internet available in my area and the cost of Verizon service, can I transfer updates from my laptop to my desktop?  I use the library forupdates as their speed is much faster and I can carry the laptop.

If you download the updates from the Apple Support site, instead of with Software Update, you can transfer them.

  • Hi I have Adobe CS4 installation on laptop.

Hi I have Adobe CS4 premium installed on my Mac desktop. It was an upgrade to CS2 Standard. I would like to install it on my new Macbook Pro laptop but nothing happens when I insert either CS disk into the laptop diskdrive. I assume that I need to load CS2 first? But it says that it does not support Power PC ?? So how do I get this software on my Macbook Pro? Thank you.

There is no need to install the Cs2 prior for installing the CS4. You can directly install the CS4.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 and my laptop

    Hi everyone,
I'm using Premiere Pro CS4 on my laptop with below specs:
Intel Pentium III Seon 2,27 Ghz
    3GB Internal memory
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3430  (512 MB)
    FUJITSU MHZ2250BH G2  (232 GB, IDE)
Windows XP 32 bits with Service Pack 3
Recently i've experienced really bad video playback. When I play a video to start edit it, it starts stuttering. I've tried the settings on "automatic quality" and "draft quality", bot in both situations the same problem. The video i'm editing now is HD1080 GoPro video. Also tried it was an already converted version of this video to AVI.
I expect that a laptop from the time that CS4 came out, suitable for 32bits system, should be working on my (in that time) better than average laptop.
Please let me know if i'm totally wrong and there is no way that Premiere is gonna work on my system!
    Thanks in advance,
    Danny

My harddrive is a Fujitsu Mobile MHZ2250BH-G2 250 GB hard drive. With a Spindle Speed of 5400 rpm. So not the 7200-RPM which is needed for HDV and HD editing?
And if I understand it correctly I would need a 3,4 Ghz for HDV editing or Dual 2,8 Ghz processor for HD editing? GoPro is HD1080, so would need at least the Dual 2,8 Ghz?

I noticed that if I open Final Cut Projects created on other/older models MacBook Pro Laptops or MacPro Desktops, the fonts used in the previously created FCP projects, change their font spacing! which distorts the look of the Text that was written, by oevrlapping on other things that were put & present on the screen.. Another similar probelm is that the Vector shaped used for example to highlight certain words or shapes, also change their position on the screen so that they no longer highlight exact things that we once used these vectors to highlight or outline... Anyone knows how to solve this problem please?? I made sure that the same fonts are available in the Library in both old and newer computers...
    thanks in advance..

You might want to take your question to the FCP forum - if you copied all fonts to your Library>Fonts folder and restarted they should be recognized by all applications. I know that this works for Adobe products, anyway.

I have a Mac computer and am trying to use a Photoshop CS4 program, but after accessing my desktop files through Adobe Bridge and clicking twice on any of the pictures to get into Photoshop, instead of entering photoshop, I get on the lefthand side an enlarged version of the picture with red, yellow and green buttons on top. Any suggestions on what is wrong, or what can be corrected ?

And there is the problem. Your pictures are opening up in Mac's own Preview app.
Do you want all your jpegs to open in Photoshop, or only when you are in Bridge?
Selecting a program to open a certain file is called: File Type Association.
You can choose this at the MacOS level or the Bridge level.
    Here's how to do both:
Either MacOS or Bridge has the wrong app associated with the jpeg. Let's start with MacOS
Close Bridge and Preview. Select one of your jpegs, and press Cmd i, That will bring up the file info window.
Go down to the "Open with" section of File Info.
Choose Photoshop CS4 and click on the Change All... button to apply this choice to every jpeg on your Mac.
Then open Bridge and see if double-clicking opens it in Photoshop.
Now that means all jpegs on your Mac will open in Photoshop.  Maybe you don't want that.
You can set your jpegs to open in Preview when Bridge is closed.
When you open Bridge, there is Preferences > File Type Associations where you can direct Bridge to open the jpegs in Photoshop when you are viewing in Bridge.

page size that I have to put my site to see the same on a computer supports both laptop and a desktop computer ?

The viewport on a computer is adjustable by the user. iWeb sets the viewport width to the page width that you chose in the layout menu. No matter what the end user does, the page width is static and a reasonable compromise for the width of a web page that will be viewed on these devices is 980 to 1024 px.
Safari on iOS devices cannot set the viewport. The viewport on mobile devices is fixed and its width depends on the orientation of the device. The iPhone in portrait mode has a viewport width of 320px. This means that the 980px wide iWeb built page will be squashed down to about one third of its desired size making it unreadable and difficult to navigate.
Setting the viewport meta tag so that width equals the device width is a futile gesture since Safari on iOS will do that anyway. Its only useful if you add some initial scaling like...
    <meta name = "viewport" content="initial-scale=0.7">
In the case of a 980px wide website, the initial scale is about 0.3 so any value higher than this will magnify the initial view of the site.
Here's an example of a 980px wide page that has been given and initial scale of 0.7 which allows an iPhone user to see one column of a two column layout...

  • Am I allowed to install CS4 on my Laptop, as well as my PC?

I have CS4 installed on my PC, but I also want to install it on my Laptop.  Do I need a certain code that will enable me to install it on my Laptop?  If not, will I receive a message that will prevent me from loading CS4 onto the Laptop?
Also, I'd like to make a copy of the CD, in case the original gets damaged.  Is this allowed?

You activate on line; after that it doesn't matter.

  • PNG for a WEB: "None/Fast" or "Smallest/Slow"?

I need to do for a WEB many PNG icons (aprox. 70x70 pixels e/a). There will be like 20 of them loaded in the WEB at the same time.
PLEASE, which kind of compression I should pick when I save as a PNG: "None/Fast" or "Smallest/Slow", and "Interlaced" or not?
My main concern is that the WEB page should load them the fastest possible.
    Thank you in advance !

Smallest/Slow seems the best choice (I think the "slow" part refers to how long it will take to save, not load)  I haven't found a browser that doesn't deal with that setting.  I never use Interlaced myself; gone are the days when pages paint pixels before your very eyes.
Consider saving from within the Save For Web feature, which can be configured to save no additional metadata and no color profile.
Consider also just trying the different settings, then looking at the files yourself.  That's how those giving advice have likely learned the best settings.

  • I currently have CS 5.5 Maser Suite Collection, I will be upgrading my computer from PC to Mac laptop and Mac desktop... What would be my best option regarding Creative Suite upgrading?

    Hi
I currently run CS 5.5 Master Suite Collection.
I plan to upgrade my computing platform from being a PC laptop, to a combination of a Mac laptop and a Mac desktop.
Can you please advise on the best fit in terms of upgrade for my Adobe Suite? Do I need two purchases, one for laptop, one for desktop? Or will one purchase cover both?
Can I be logged into both laptop and desktop att the same time? For example using one to work on Photoshop while the other renders video and animation in AfterEffects and Premiere?
would I need to install each component on each platform, or can I have a common set up easily rolled out?
    Cheers

Normally one purchase is good for two machines, but that is under the condition that only one machine is using the purchased software (the suite in this case) at any given time.  If you intend to be using the suite on two machines simultaneously then you will need two licenses (or subscriptions, depending how you upgrade).

  • CS4 apps are VERY slow to open Windows file browser with File Open or File Save As commands

We are running CS4 on Windows 7 with all available updates installed.   Photoshop and the other CS4 applications are VERY slow to open a Windows file browsing window to select files when File Open or File Save As menu options are run -- it can take as long as a minute or two for the window to open.  Once the window opens and a file is selected, then opening or saving the file is very quick.  The location of the default directory, whether it is on a local drive or a network drive, makes no difference.  Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

The link that I posted earlier is off.  Read this one
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2501584.  I discovered in my network that the MS Office File Validation Patch made excel crawl when opening over the network though nothing else changed. At the time I was opening Excel on Office 2003.
You can manually turn this off by editing the registry and tunring it off.  Going forward I skipped the patch to keep my sanity.  Not sure if this is the same as your issue, but the support article will go into detail how to either have Fix it
clear the issue or change the proper registry keys.
    Hope this helps

    Hi,
I have a Linksys WRT54G2 router and a laptop (wireless) and desktop (wired) which both connect fine however if I turn on the desktop before the laptop or turn the desktop on while the laptop is running the laptop loses connection. When this happens the laptop displays all the available wireless networks but can’t see my one. The only way to I can get it working again is to restart the router.
Both machines are running windows XP. The wireless is using WPA2 Personal security. This problem has always occurred since buying this router.
Let me know if there is any other information required.
    Many thanks.
