CS4 freezes on opening at "Measuring Memory"

I've seen this posted with no answer before, and the phone support will not assist me because It's CS4, and not the most recent 5.5.
I cannot open photoshop.  I paid a lot of money for this.  Here's the issue:
Photoshop crashed when I was trying a save for web on a maybe 5 mb image.  Nothing crazy.  But oh well.  When I tried opening photoshop after that, it froze at "Measuring Memory."
I've tried shift+option+command delete preferences restart to no avail.  I'm open to any ideas.  Thanks.

My guess would be that you have some drives that are asleep, or some remote volumes that are slow to access.
At that point, Photoshop is trying to get the size and info for all drives on the system so it can match them against the list of scratch volumes (and rule out remote volumes and removeable drives).

  • CS6 Freezes during startup at Measuring Memory

I am new to this forum, so not sure where to post this.
When I click on the icon to start Photoshop CS6, it freezes at "Measuring Memory".
I tried to uninstall Photoshop but the uninstall will not work.  I tried to reinstall with the disk but Windows will not start the setup file.
I also ran scans on viruses and it turned up negative.
Does Photoshop have a repair program?

  • Photoshop CS4 Freezes when opening PDFs

When I drag two, 2-page PDFs onto Photoshop CS4 to open them, PS opens one page of one PDF and then freezes. I can replicate this every time I try.
Once PS freezes it takes a little patience to get it to force quit.
    Any advice?

Not to dig up the past, but I've been having this problem since a couple of months ago, and I have an idea about what might be causing the bug. It IS a bug.
My workflow involves taking hundreds of PSD and PDF files for product packaging and converting them to 3D and 2D product shots. We have to supply retailers with high-res JPGs of our distributed products. Most of the original files have crop marks, color bars, etc.
In the past, all I had to do was drag my files, whatever they were, to the dock. I would typically work in batches, pulling up 10 or so files at once, cropping them, and then running an action, depending on the general format. Pretty much every layout is a different size, or using a different template, or what have you, so using an action to do the actual cropping is completely out of the question. Cropping in Acrobat is horribly implemented, so that's out of the question.
One day I started doing some image processing as normal, and photoshop opened the first PDF, rasterized it, and then became completely unresponsive. Well, let me specifically qualify that. It lets me continue using any application other than photoshop, and it will let me click on the menus, which will drop down from the menu bar, but you can't select any commands at all. They aren't grayed out, they just don't respond. The behavior is exactly what you would get if you had a dialog box open, but there isn't an open dialog box. There SHOULD be (for the next PDF), but it isn't there.
You can't "quit" or close that first PDF or anything. Some commands will try to function (scripts) but fail and say "Sorry, something major happened, and I can't continue" (yes, that's really the error message).
OS X doesn't think that PS is locked up. PS doesn't think it is locked up, but it won't do anything at all. It only happens with multiple PDFs being dragged to the dock or opened through "file/open." In fact, if you select 30 PSD files, 10 JPGs, 5 EPS files, 1 PDF and 10 Illustrator files, it will work just fine. 2 PDFs? locks up.
I've found one way to get around this bug, and it might work for those of you with this problem. Use the File/Scripts/Image Processor tool to rasterize your PDFs to PSD files as an intermediate step, and then you can open them in Photoshop. If you need something other than pg 1 of a multipage document, you'll have to edit in acrobat first to get rid of unwanted leading pages.
That's been my work-around for a few months.
I just recently moved from my Mac Pro to a new MacBook Pro. I did a clean install, and then ran migration assistant to move my stuff over to a new account.
Everything went well, but the photoshop bug appeared to follow me to a new machine. I was very frustrated.
Then I realized what had changed around the time of this bug originally showing up: I'd added a second monitor!
So, thinking I'd figured out the bug and how to get around it for real, I just disconnected my external monitor and force-quit Photoshop. Opened it back up, and the bug is still there in force, even with one display active.
    Here's my info, to clarify:
    Original machine with the bug:
    Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 ghz (4 core 2007 model)
    8GB RAM
    320 GB velociraptor (system drive)
    1.5TB RAID 0, 900 GB free (scratch)
    10.5.7-10.6.6 (bug never went away)
    2 NEC 20" LCDs
    CS5 Design Premium, fully updated
    New machine, also with bug:
    2011 15" MacBook Pro, 2.0ghz 4 core
    8 GB RAM
120GB SATA6 SSD (system drive, primary scratch), 70 GB free
500 GB stock HDD (in the optical bay, storage drive, secondary scratch), 250 GB free
    10.6.7
    1 NEC 20" LCD + built-in hi-res display

  • Photoshop CS4 stops loading beyond "Measuring Memory"

Can anyone pls help as after a serious virus attack Photoshop CS4 stops loading at message "Measuring Memory".
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks!
Did this and still not being able to load beyond "Measuring Memory"....
    Any further suggestions?

  • Photoshop CS6 Extended Slow Load ("Measuring Memory...")

    Hi guys!
Sorry English is not my native language.
I am run Photoshop CS6 Extended 64-bit (from design premium) on Windows 7, 64-bit with 8GB RAM.
When I first start PS, it looks like it freeze on the text "Measuring Memory". If I wait for about 30 seconds, it will eventually load and everything works fine. No issues with Save for Web or anything.
I have read the other threads on this and tried all of these solutions:
Checked my ram in memtest (15 passes, no error)
    Trash preferences and open again
    Un-install and re-install (tried twice)
Updated PS to latest with Adobe Update
    Reboot machine
This happen when I first run Windows, so lack of RAM is not the issue. I have no printers, other hard drive, or remote network drive attached to machine. Scratched disk is set to the boot disk (C:\)
If it help, Illustrator CS6 and InDesign CS6 load normally.
Do you have any suggestions to fix this? Thank you!
    Richard Montouchet

Congratulations on having such a huge amount of memory that it takes 30 seconds to measure it all!    Just kidding - sorry.
You've done all the things a reasonable person would do...  Some other things I might suggest are:
    1.  Check to ensure your display driver is up to date - go to the web site of the maker of your video card, not Microsoft.
    2.  Try disabling the Use Graphics Processor setting in Edit - Preferences - Performance, and restart Photoshop.
    3.  Remove any 3rd party plug-ins (reinstall won't remove plug-ins, so I thought I'd mention it).
    4.  Check to see if you have the same behavior with the 32 bit Photoshop as the 64 bit Photoshop.

  • Bridge CS4 freezes when I open a folder with avi files

Whenever I navigate to a folder with avi files, Bridge CS4 freezes. I have tried resetting my preferences, changing the file associations, but it still hangs. Both Windows and Bridge are set up to associate avi files with VLC Media Player. The files open and play just fine in VLC. I am running CS4 on a Win XP Pro machine. It used to not be a problem and I could play avi files in Bridge. I'm not sure when the problem started since I don't shoot a lot of video. Any ideas?

Thx for that im gonna try it....but is there a way to do it without using toolbar or cmd-c...? i mean using only the mouse?why does it have to highlight the file even though i click a bit next to it....?using icon view i can right click next to the folder and i wont have a problem but with list view that i prefer using it will highlight the whole row.....and i dont find free space to right click cause i got many files

You need to find the "Update" app and run it.  It will check to see if your phone needs an OS update, or if any programs you've installed from the App Store have been updated.

  • Photoshop stalls on Measuring memory & save for web and devices

    Mac OS X 10.6.4
    MacBook Pro
    CS4 Photoshop Extended
    Hey there,
I would be grateful if anyone can shed any light this problem which has occured out of nowhere.
I'm a web designer so this problem is causing chaos at the moment. When I try to save an image for 'web and devices' - I will get to the 'save for web and devices' window but then Photoshop 'freezes'. It doesn't seem to make a difference on file size big or small - Photoshop just freezes up. Sometimes Photoshop wont do it instantly, I will be able to save about 3 - 4 files and then it will freeze up. The only way to re-start the process is to force quit the application and start again.
However sometimes when I re-start Photoshop, the application will hang on 'measuring memory' instruction on the start up panel - where I then have to force quit and sometimes re-start my machine. This whole process is obviously very time consuming and a right pain.
Just for info I have played around in the Preferences - just to see if changing the 'memory usage' would have any effect - this doesn't seem to of made a difference. I currently have the setting at 2211mb (71%) which is within the ideal range (1689-2211mb).
Any guidance or help would be most grateful.
    Cheers
    T

Definitely – it may or may not help but it’s easily done (command-alt-
    shift on starting the program).
Though it is somewhat annoying having to recreate the Preferenes-
settings one has changed and getting the Tools back to the preferred
    settings.
If you should trash your prefs just don’t forget to save your custom
    Presets (Brushes, Patterns etc.) before.

  • Photoshop CS4 won't open RAW files

Photoshop CS4 will not open RAW (.CR2) files. I have tried what is listed on Adobe's website (checking versions, uninstalling, reinstalling). Nothing has worked. It still gives me the error message: "Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file."
I am using CS4 on a 10.6.6 Mac OS with a Canon Rebel XS. I currently have Camera Raw 5.7 installed.
Does anyone have any answers ?

The CAT.CR2 file that was posted is from a 1000D that does not have sRAW capabilities.  Comparing the ExifTool data and the camera specifications, there should have been a small-sized preview JPG image and a large-sized RAW image in the file, but the file was truncated after the top-left quadrant of RAW data was written:

  • Windows Update Causing CS6 Photoshop x64 to crash at "Measuring Memory"

    Hello,
This started on the 28th when we received a batch of Windows updates on our machines. The next day the eight users who have this installed are no longer able to open the 64 bit version of Photoshop. Each time it will get to "Measuring Memory" and then crash with no events in the Event Viewer. I have tried to remove the Windows updates manually with no luck. The only way to get it back to working is to do a System Restore. When doing some troubleshooting I discovered that if I use log in on the workstation that is crashing with my account then Photoshop 64 bit will open for me and get past the measuring memory. So I tried to figure out what relationship photoshop has with the users account and all I found was the users "Settings/Preferences". I had the user log back in and went to the location of that file and removed the 64 bit version. I then opened Photoshop back up and it created a new file but still crashed on measuring memory.
If you have other suggestions or knowledge of what else is tied to the users account. I should also mention that the 32 bit version works fine on the machine for all the users.
    Thank you for your help.

    Bump. Still looking for help.
I have tried to run all Windows updates and then uninstall and re install Adobe Photoshop both 32-bit and 64-bit. The system still crashes. In the event viewer I am getting this:
Faulting application name: Photoshop.exe, version: 13.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4f61c045
Faulting module name: dvamarshal.dll, version: 6.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4f61b977

I have also updated the video card driver on this machine. Windows 7 Pro, Adobe CS6 Master Collection, 32 GB RAM, and Quadro K5000 video card.

  • CS6 hanging at measuring memory

    Greetings.
We have set up a new lab here on campus with 11 machines running CS6 for our art department. Currently those machines are W7 32bit with an I5 processor and 4gb of memory. They are brand new machines with a fresh image and install of CS6.
At random points of the day we have noticed that Photoshop will hang on measuring memory. We have noticed that this occurs any time an SVCHost process is running at more than 200k. We have tried to narrow down what exactly is causing the SVCHost to spike but have been unsuccessful. We have turned off windows update and virus scanning on those machine to no avail.
I was wondering if anyone had run into this issue on W7 before? We are kind of stumped at the moment and our professors are getting frustrated with not being able to have students use Photoshop when they need them too.
    Thanks in adavance

Thanks Chris, it does seem particular to CS6 as I have just made the jump from CS5 and (CS4  before that) and have never had this issue before.  I do have a bunch of network drives that map on login.  Our techs tell me all network drives and devices were working during my hang.
I just read in another thread that it maybe some kind of firewall blocking access to an address... http://forums.adobe.com/message/4707421 could this be the issue? we have MS Forefront here at the studio.

oh forgot to mention that when we re-installed nvidia drivers, this 'seemed' to get cs6 running again after a couple of 'hangs' (or what could have eventually been really slow loads)

  • EMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber

My eMac freezes randomly, open window turns into broken up jibber (kinda looks like I put a photoshop filter on it or something). I can't force quit when it does this, no error message, I've repaired permissions. Any ideas?

This doesn't help. but my first thought on seeing your picture was 'addressing bit failure in the video memory'. Unfortunately, as you already know, the video 'card' on the eMac is a chipset mounted to the logic board, and the only repair I'm aware of is replacement. An Apple Service Provider could give you an estimate but unless your eMac is still within the standard one-year hardware warrenty or you purchased the three-year ApplceCare extended warrenty, that's not an attractice cost-benefit tradeoff.
On the chance that I'm wrong and it's some unusual system corruption, look again for the Hardware Test disc. It can be tricky figuring out where it is; on early eMacs it was always a separate CD, on recent eMacs it's a partition on the Restore DVD, and on models in between, it depends on whether the OS X Install disc was on a DVD or not. You might try booting from your OS X Install or Restore disc using Startup Manager to see if Hardware Test is on a partition.
If nothing else, booting off the OS X Install disk (as if you were going to run Disk Utility > Repair Disk to check the drive) should further confirm if the problem is in the video hardware rather than in the hard drive's OS: if the broken display appears when booted from the OS X Install disc, it's pretty certainly the video hardware.

  • Adobe Flash Professional CS4 freezes when trying to save

It doesn't exactly freeze, but the only option is to force quit Adobe Flash Pro CS4 when I open the save dialog on OS X. This results in every project ever being lost.
I can export but I cannot Save As. The window opens but no options are clickable, and I can't Cancel.
    Help.
    Edit:
I have had this problem for two years and I even reinstalled deleted all preference files, no luck.
Running latest version of Mountain Lion.
I can use the entire app (like change workspace type or menus) but I can't do anything that's greyed out, Save or cancel the Save As... box.

I meant the File->Save option should not be gray if you "make a change" anywhere in the document. I only have access to an OSX Server remotely to illustrate this point so SimpleText should help you understand what I mean by a grayed out menu item:
    The big red arrow.
You can get to the Save As dialog so clearly grayed out menu items wasn't the issue. Moving on..
Your screenshot buttons may be unresponsive but they also aren't "grayed out". Here's a Save dialog with a truely grayed out button:
Your button is not grayed out.
Accurately describing your issue here will help quite a bit. The "save crash" issue has been so rampant it's the first suggestion I had so I offered it. Often repairing the FLA fixed the saving mechanism.
In your case I honestly haven't come across your issue so I have no more suggestions outside reinstall Flash completely.  Good luck.

  • CS4 crashing when opening on PC Windows 7

I have used CS4 as a companion programme with LR4 for some time. It is the last updated version and provides all I need as far as tools are concerned. Today CS4 refuses to open, invoking a Windows message claiming to be looking for the cause of failure. Before I uninstall and reinstall the CS4, what precautionary measures should I take to avoid unexpected problems in the future? (Such as copy registration or verification). My anti-virus is up-to-date and working in the background.
    Thank you.
