CS4 Gradients / how to make previous grads load?

In CS4 past gradients I have made and used since Photoshop CS2 do not load. CS4 sees them as corrupt or incompatible. I think this is a crock. They are nothing but numbers. I don't know, maybe they really are incompatible. I can't help but think that if I changed the name of the ending or file name, or file type they might work again. Anyone know of a work around to get past gradients to work? A person spends time to create what a program allows one to create, and then they are all useless in a year or two. Like a big f_____ waste of time. But heck, I'm just one user.

I opened each gradiant file in it's own Info Window. I changed only the incompatible files Administrator(Me) and me(User) to be able to Read and Write, then closed them all. The compatible Gradiant files were already set where the Adm and me could read and write. Then tried to open each of the corrupt/incompatible gradiant file in CS4. The incompatible gradiant files ARE STILL INCOMPATIBLE. I checked and all have the same ending, .grd. All are associated with CS4 in the Info Window.
What the heck is left? You tell me.

How to make a button load a sprite from library??

Hey everyone.. iv been looking for help for a few weeks but cant seem to find the awnsers
I am trying to create a newspaper that consists of four pages. Each page i have created and are sitting in the library as sprites. Each page has buttons that need linking so that when pressed it loads the next page or page that i want. This is the part i am confused with =/ how do i make the buttons on each page load the next page (sprite) from the library??
Basically i want to no how to make a button load a sprite from the library when clicked. Does anyone no the script for this?

A question arises as to whether or not you are posting in the right forum. Sprites are AS3 objects.
If you want to add movieclips to the stage from the library using AS2, then you need to assign them each an Identifier via right clicking them in the library and selecting the Linkage option... from there you slect the option to Export for Actionscript and then assign the Identifier.
You then use the attachMovie() method to make use of that Identifier to dynamically load the library object.

I have packages in their own directories, and the applet compiles and links with them, by use of CLASSPATH env variable. But when it comes time to run, it ignores that and does not know where the classes (in the packages) are.
If I don't use packages and put all code in one directory, runs fine. If I use an application, I can link with and load my packages.
I know applets can't use things like CLASSPATH for security reasons, but still, they should be able to be compiled out of several packages, why do I have to put all code together??

OK, for reference for future newbies, here's the answer:
use CODEBASE attribute in your html file (if on Windows server, don't use drive letter but relative path to .html file, Unix style, and put all your .class files beneath that, for example, in your .html file

and then have package bar Bar.class file, in ..\class\bar

How to make previous version documents(CS1 and CS3) without extension readable in InDesign CS5

I have some previous version documents of CS1 and CS3 on Mac which have been saved without any extension e.g 300, CS3doc etc.
When I open such documents in InDesign CS5 they appear to be unreadable . Only on selecting 'All documents' filter I am able to open those documents.
I want to make all such documents (which are without extension) readable with 'All Readable Documents ' also .
How I can do that, please help me !!!!!

The first thing I'd do is make sure the issue is really what I suspect it is - i.e. I suspect your extension-less documents don't have the proper type and creator.
If you fire up a Terminal window, you should be able to use the GetFileInfo command to check one of the files:
Assume 'sampleFile' is sitting on your desktop, you'd do
GetFileInfo ~/Desktop/sampleFile
(not sure when/whether GetFileInfo is installed on a Mac - I think it used to be part of Apple's developer tools, but on my Snow Leopard it resides in /usr/bin)
Check what it says for 'type' and 'creator'.
If these are not correct, we've confirmed that that's the reason why they don't show up in your file dialog.
If the issue is type/creator related, I can think of the following options:
a) Change your code to accept ANY file type/extension - I suspect this would work (not tested!):
openFileDialog->AddType( '????' );
If memory serves right, '????' should be accepted as a wildcard.
b) correct the file types BEFORE they are viewed in the File Dialog - for example, if these files are in a very specific folder somewhere, you might be able to scan the folder, and correct their type and creator (e.g. iterate through all extensionless files in folder 'xyz' and change their type and creator). A lot depends on how those files get there, and whether they are tied to a specific folder or not - are they 'old' files, or are they being generated in some workflow? If they're all over a user's system or all over a file server, such pre-scanning and cleaning up file types approach will be a no-go.

How to make previous chat history visible in new window

Hi people,
Recent Windows convert here. I am a loyal user of Trillian, and one of the things I love about Trillian is that when a new chat window comes up, the log from the previous conversation is visible within it.
So, to illustrate, it's a bit frustrating to have a conversation like this:
Me: Hey Mike, do you know how Sally is doing?
Mike: I am away from my computer
I log off or go away. Then a few hours later,
Mike: She hurt her foot
Me: Who hurt her foot?
You get my drift - if new windows had a little history in them, that'd be great. Now, I know how to save chat history, and where it is saved. What I'm wishing for is that it were right there inside the new window with some kind of divider to set the time/context (even a button to view it would be a step in the right direction). I'm guessing there may be an add-on for this, but my Apple Discussion and Google searches have been fruitless.
Any ideas? Thanks all.

I only know of a partial solution to this.
If I have a Chat open and the other end person goes offline when they come back my end uses the same window if I still have it open.
There is no way to reopen a close chat window AND add fresh text chat to it.
If you wanted this it would be a feature request.
I could see that it could be done two ways.
1) The Recents item in iChat itself could list the last few saved chats
2) An iChat Recents item could be added to the Blue Apple Recents item.
At present iChat open saved chats are added to the Documents list if they are reopened, so it will probably need both.
It is around this area that you might find a utility.

JMS: how to make child class loader (classes) available to parent loader

Environment: oc4j 10.1.3.1 on SunOS 5.10
Our application (set up in an instance other than "home") sets up a JMS receiver, everything works fine to the point where the receiver receives the message but the message deserialization fails with the below error. Looks like the deserializer (loaded by the parent classloader sytem.root) is not able to load the class from its child code-source (one of my application libraries in WEB-INF/lib) I have seen a lot of documentation on how libraries can be shared between applications, but I haven't come across any that is related to my problem here. I have even tried adding the library in question to bootclasspath that did not help either.
How to get around this problem.

Resolved by adding the application library in question to config/application.xml as <library path="<relative path to the library>"/> so the library has instance scope is accessible by the sytem.root loader.

How to make a gradient on two paths

Hello,
I am fairly new to Illustrator, although have used Photoshop, Fireworks and DW to some degree in the past.
In CS4, I am trying to make a country map with different counties or states. Using the map of the UK and including Wales, Scotland, and some of the counties as an example. I need to portray the whole country, but only highlight a specific part of the land, along a train line and so quickly fade away to almost transparent in the further edges.
Using the pen tool I have traced the country and county borders as paths. I then used the fill tool to make each country, or sea, a different colour. Now I want to fade the edges of my map away to transparent to bring attention to the middle. I have drawn another path on top and beyond the edge of the artwork and tried to make a transparency overlay and gradient in this path to make it fade to the edges. However, this does not work as I had hoped for three reasons.
1) the darkest edge of my 'fade path' does not blend into the country below but is quite an obvious line.
2) the gradient is a different colour as it sits on top of other paths of different colours.
3) the gradient is linear, from top to north, of radial, from a certain spot. I need the gradient to flow out in all directions from a un-uniform 'blob' roughly in the middle.
Can you please tell me how I can achieve my aim?
3) I had one more query when tracing my map ... I have two shapes and the paths align along one edge, think of the south border of Scotland, and the north border of England for example. At the moment I have these two paths running alongside each other but not joined. So if I didn't draw my pen accurately, there are small pockets where they don't touch. Ideally I would like to borrow the other path line for a time then leave it as it continues on it's own route.
Sorry if I mixed up the terms, I hope you can understand me.
Hope you can advise which tools I should be using, or some tutorials I can follow?

Thanks Mylenium. I've certainly learnt something from both replies. I have now finished tracing the countries using your paste and cut method. It was quite a tedious job! I also found using the lasso tool and direct selecion tool that I could highlight just the area that bordered the next county/country. My the latter stages I had to select multiples, join them and then add, delete more anchor points. I'm sure there must be an easier way to trace an image!
I tried the live trace, but the map I was using was too detailed it traced geography and not the borders. Anyway, I'm there now. Thanks for the advice.
I think I'm on the wrong track with the 'blob'. I didn't mean the blob tool on AI, but was referring to the middle content of my map following the railway line, which is the bit I wanted to 'stand out' from the rest. I have perservered and think I'm getting somewhere with the gradients.
Thanks also Skullmaster for the idea of gradient. It wasn't working how I need, but from your link I found how to make a 'transparent opacity mask' which I have used with a photo in the background to some effect.
It is a feature rich software and hard to know what to look for when I'm not sure of the terms. Unfortunately I have a deadline for what I'm doing and this map is only a small part of it. It will have to remain a work in progress as I slowly learn more techniques.

How to make a Previous/Next Menu

Hi there. This is my first time posting in the Adobe forums so please be patient if I don't do things correctly.
I currently have the Adobe Web Design CS5 package and all the programs that come with it, but my question is specifically about Dreamweaver. My computer is a Macbook with the latest operating system as far as I know.
I've been trying to create a next/previous menu for parts of my own personal website. It's http://www.aidenart.com . If you click on the link to the Concept Art page you should see a bunch of image thumbnails that act as links. Click on any one of those images and you're suppose to see the full image from the thumbnail in a whole new page. On the pages with the full images I would like to include, at the bottom, a jump menu so that a visitor can pick any of the pages that they might want to see (I already know how to do this part), but I would also like to include buttons which allow the visitor to visit the next image in the list and also the previous one in the list. You know, a previous and next menu. I've seen other websites using those kinds of buttons so I know it's possible somehow.
By looking at the source code of some websites and doing a bit of research on my own, I think this can be done using javascript of some kind. Maybe by using an "onClick" behaviour or something. I looked at a few different web help sites, including W3 Schools, and I still haven't found any clear cut explanations on how to make a previous/next menu. If someone could just show me the basic code for making a simple one that actual works then I could probably work from that.
I would prefer it if I didn't have to bother with the dreamweaver extenstions section because most things listed in the exchange are something you have to pay for. And for those of you who think I should just make individual links on each page, please keep in mind that I'll want to add more pages in the future. Most likely a lot of pages. I also want to be able to make previous/next menus for the comics section of my website for when I have more comic pages available, so I really need to know how to do this.
I hope that was enough information for you guys. I can try to provide code if you guys want although I'm not sure how that would help solve my current problem.

Only way to do pagination effectively requires either a database or XML files containing your data. Neither way is really for a beginner based on my experience with both. And based on the size of your library right now, pagination isn't what you really need.
If it is going to be an image gallery you could look into the php Gallery script if you have a mySQL database ( http://gallery.menalto.com/ ). But for simple solutions.
For even smaller solutions you can look to JQuery solutions. They require minimal amounts of coding, mostly just file inclusions.

How to make IIS plug-in do STICKY load balancing

There are two classes of scalable services: pure and sticky. A pure service
is one where any instance of the application can respond to client requests.
A sticky service is one where a client sends its requests to the same
instance; those requests are not redirected to other instances.
It seems to me that weblogic IIS proxy plug-in does not support the sticky
load balancing.
Could someone give me some information on how to make the proxy sticky?
Is there configuration parameters for this?

I set the cluster.
It seems to me that there is some problem with the Set-Cookie mechanism of
the plug-in.
Sometime it set the cookie in my browser, sometime it is not.
Even from the wlproxy.log, I could set something like

You are specifying two different ports in your servers. You need to use
clustering in order to get this functionality with the plugin.Furthermore,
you will achieve fail-over.

That let's the plugin read the cookie set by WebLogic to determine

How do i make WebView automatically load when using TakeStringURLFrom??

I haven't added any code yet. I've WebKit, a Webview and a editable textbox where it takes the URL from. Normally it would require you to hit enter, but i would like it to just load it automatically. How do i do this? Please explain EXACTLY how! I would also like to know how instead of it using scrollers, i can make it just do like if you play a windowed game, u know, so u can still see it all. Also i would like to know how u make it stretch out when it enters fullscreen, please.

Open Accounts preferences, click on the Login Items tab. Select entries and press Delete [-] to remove. Click on the Add [+] button to place an application into the list.
Note that the more items in the list you load at startup the slower your startup time will be.
