CS4 hangs in the timeline and the program window

This is going to be a difficult post since I'm not sure how to articulate the problem.
To begin - I have been using Premier for many years, so I don't believe my difficulties are the result of being a newbie.
I installed CS4 a few months ago, but have been heavily involved with project using CS3 and therefore have not fired up CS4 until recently. The problem is that after placing my clips on the timeline I can scrub and play them. Once I begin to make edits however, I scrub along the timeline and nothing happens - I don't see any visual changes in the monitor.
If I wait a while then the functionality comes back (but only for a few moments) and then everything freezes again.
This is really frustrating. So much so that I have gone back to usign CS3 since it actually works.
I don't know how to fix this problem, nor do I know if others have the same problem.
Any help will be appreciated.

How to Zoom and Pan in the program window.

I have been using scale to adjust larger than 4K image sequences so they fit 1080 and 4K output. I want to be able to zoom in and pan/tilt the program window so I can see the edges of the program window close up, so I can see to make a fine adjustment of scale. I want to be able to adjust scale precisely so I don't lose a single pixel, or include any black around the edges of the images. Of course I can't see the edges close up enough while looking at the entire image, to really see if I have scaled too much or too little. I know how to zoom in the program window, but how do I pan over to the side and bottom edges ? Without being able to pan I instantly lose the edges of the frame when I zoom in the program window.

I am taking tme lapse sequences shot on a DSLR and putting them onto Blu Ray disks for viewing. I also outputted a 4K file to try to play at Best Buy on a 4K television. The images are 4928 X 3280 pixels, which is larger than 4K, and much larger than 1080. One of the advantages of using these large images directly and not reducing them in Photoshop first is that I can have a time lapse zoom, which is very difficult to achieve otherwise. I can also pan and tilt. Another advantage is not having to reduce thousands of images three times, once for 1080, once for 4K, and once for stills..
I usually work with 1080 video, and animated 1080 still sequences from Maya, or standard definition video. This is the my first opportunity to work with higher resolutions.
Generally, for my first evaluation of these DSLR stills, i wanted to show some of them fully without cutting any off. This means there is a black border onthe sides because the DSLR stills are 2:3 instead of 9:16. For this I have used a scale of 32.6% for 1080, and 66% for 4K. For some sequences i wanted to just completely fill the frame. For this I used 38.9% for 1080, and 77.9% for 4K.
My assumption is that Premier should do scaling as well as Photoshop does, and so I have let Premier do the work, saving me a lot of extra work. First i take all the original images and process them from raw to tiff, for the day exposures. Then i process them again for the night exposures. Then i bring them into either my 1080 project, or my 4K project. I put the night pictures above the day pictures on a separate video track. I use opacity to dissolve from the day to night processed images as night falls inthe scene.
Two sequences I shot are of the night sky during the recent meteor shower. After watchign the video I see i caught three instances of persistent meteor trails distorting in the sky. I was able to zoom in quite a bit, and track the position, because the sequence is of greater resolution than the native 1080 format. It gives me a second change at composition, or the ability to zoom in on something interesting that happens in the scene.
It seems to me that the only reason i would want to first process the images down to 1080 in Photoshp, would be if the quality of the scaling was higher in Photoshop.
When i adjust the scale, I am adjusting the scale of an image that is 4928 X 3280, in the program monitor which is probably only well less than 1000 pixels on my screen. It would be nice if I could not only zoom, but pan in the program window, so I could more accurately adjust scale by looking at the edges. So if there is no other way to do this visually, I am suggesting adding the ability to pan and tilt in the program monitor to accomplish this. Sure I could figure out the scale mathematically. I could still end up adding a row of black pixels, or cutting off a row of image pixels, due to some error such as rounding errors, or starting with 1 instead of zero, or vice versa.

Can't work out how to get timeline footage to play full size in the Program Window...

I'm using Premiere Pro CS3. The footage I import plays fine in the Source Window, but is at a more reduced, "boxed-in" size in the Program Window when I put it onto the timeline.
I know that i can stretch the image to fit the frame, but I'm worried about losing quality if I do that.. The Zoom Level is set to "Fit", so I'm not completely sure what else to do... Any help would be much appreciated...

The Frame Size of my original Source Footage is 720 X 404
I've set my Project Preset to DV-PAL - Widescreen 48kHZ, which upon inspection, is 720 X 576, so I'm guessing that's what the problem is..?
I've tried going into Custom Settings to change the Frame Size, but the boxes are "greyed out", not allowing me to change them..
Any ideas on how to best move forward? Cheers.

Nothing plays in the Program window.

I'm a new user to Premiere Pro and I recently downloaded it and started working on it. I'm using Mac OSX 10.8.5
I was working on a project that someone had given to me, I opened it and everything was working fine and then inexplicably nothing would play in the program window. When I scrub the playhead I can hear the audio and the sequence progresses in the Program window, but when I press play it does absolutely nothing, it doesn't even play a single frame. All clips still play just fine in the source window.
While I am admittedly a novice on Premiere Pro this strikes me as a very peculiar problem as it seemed to happen out of nowhere, one moment it was working, the next it wasn't.
I've tried restarting, saving the project in a different location, logging in with a different user and always with the same result, the sequence just won't play.
Can anyone suggest a solution?

Hi Arjun,
When I right click on a clip and and create a new sequence it works fine.
So I tried creating a new sequence, and then copied and pasted everything from the sequence that wasn't playing into the new one and it plays now though playback is not very smooth, other than that it's working fine.
Jude - it was the entire sequence that wouldn't play, not just one video track.

When trying to view a TV program on ABC network, I get the commercial, but it hangs when the program is supposed to start.

I wanted to watch a video on ABC TV. When I started the process I was able to see the commercial (preceding the program), but after the commercial completed it stopped rather than show the program. I encountered the same problem with Orca (a browser built around Firefox. However I had no problem viewing the program using IE8. I encountered a similar experience before trying to view an ABC program and was then able to view it on Avant, a browser built on IE.

If you are getting that message then you are not streaming from your computer, but rather from the cloud. 3mbps is not fast enough for HD content, go to settings - iTunes and switch to SD.
If you want to stream off your computer you need to use home sharing by going to the Computers icon on Apple TV
As for DNS (settings - general - network - configure DNS - automatic)

Rearranging elements in the Program window?

1. Are there keyboard shortcuts for this? In Photoshop, when you select an element or a layer, you can use the arrow keys to move it. I remember being able to do this in really old versions of Premiere, but I don't remember how.
2. Is there a way to keep elements inline when rearranging? In Photoshop, you can hold the shift key and when you drag a layer, it will stay on an even axis (horizontal, vertical, 45-degree angle).

Assuming you're referring to multiple video elements in the scene, which can be manipulated using the mouse directly in the Program Monitor, I'm not aware of any Photoshop-like functionality. The closest you might come is to adjust only the x or y axis in the Effects Controls Panel.

Mountain Lion opens the programs/windows after restart - sometimes

On ML exists the feature, to re-open all windows after reboot (in the Shutdown-window after pressing the Power-Button.) This option is always disabled.
But sometimes ML simply starts all the apps and show all the windows, which are opened before shutdown/restart. But: sometimes only - the most time it will work.
Can someone confirm this?

How do you disable this annoying "feature". I don't to wait for all the programs from last use to re open and then have to close them all after I turn on my computer if I'm just there to use one program and get something done !!

Msinfo32:Application hang. The program thunderbird.exe version 31.2.0.05 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.

Since the issue can always be caused by incompatible shell extension or driver conflict.
We can first use shellexView to disable non-Microsoft related extensions of Windows Explorer to see what’s going on:
1. Download ShellExView v1.41 from the following link

2. Extract "shexview.zip" file and open shexview.exe. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions.
3. Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard.
4. Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes.
5. Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.
If the issue persists, then test the issue in Clean Boot and Safe Mode, and let me know the results.
Meanwhile, please configure Windows to create user-mode dumps. Create a System Restore Point first.

Is there a way to put the taskbar into the program window like in Windows XP?

Migrating from Windows XP to Mac OS X 10.8.2. The taskbar at the top of the page (not referring to the icons on the right) is unwieldy for my purposes. It'd be better to have it in the individual program (e.g. Word, Excel) window at the top of the page. Is there any way to do this such as 3rd party software?

Snap videos to the edges of the program window's black area?

Just a heads up, I don't know all the correct terminology. Sorry if there's any confusion.
Say I have 4 clips and I wanted to have them all playing simultaneously. One in each of the 4 corners.
But it's difficult to drag them perfectly in place. You'd have to define numerical their positions...which is annoying.
Like in photoshop, if you tried to do this with 4 pictures, you'd just make sure snap-to is turned on and drag to the approximate area.
Is there any way to do ^^^ in premiere? Thanks~

Premiere had its origins in being an NLE ...and compositing was the realms of AEFX
The lines has blurred a little but even then...compositing uses and requires the precison of sub pixel placement for positioning.
Snapping is kind of coarse but no reason why it would not work for some "things".
Corners and centres are absolutes and if used with simple maths..pretty easy to use for locating and positioning.

Progress (bar) in the program window instead of statusbar

Hello,
I make use of a bapi that adds messages to the statusbar. I also want to use some kind of progress indication. When I use FM SAPGUI_PROGRESS_INDICATOR I cannot see the progress because the messages take the focus away from the little clock....
Can the progress be shown on a screen?

What is your report template type? Is it RTF or XPT (Layout Editor)?

Moving and renaming clips in the Project Window is EXTREMELY slow, but the rest of the program is fine?! PPro CS6

I have Win7 Pro X64 with Core i7 and 32GB RAM...
When I'm editing and doing other things, adding FX etc, the program works fine BUT when I do ANYTHING in the Program Window i.e. renaming clips, moving clips, etc the program acts as if it's bogged down... I can't for the life of me figure this one out...
I don't have a large number of clips/footage items
I've cleaned the cache
What else could be causing this? When I say slow, I mean a good 10 seconds before the program responds to anything I've done, and when renaming clips, I always have to do it twice because the first time it doesn't "take"

It occurs with or without clips in a sequence... the problem isn't the sequences, the problem ONLY occurs in the Project Panel, every other panel is as fast as my machine will allow (very fast) only the PROJECT Panel is EXTREMELY slow when moving clips into folders, etc
ALSO, all my drives and preferences are set up the same in every project, only THIS project is moving slowly... I even divided the project up into 4 separate projects to cut down on the number of clips in each project, and it still moves slow... almost as if something has carried over to each project, or something

Premiere Pro CS4 Sequence Error? (Timeline Window says No sequence, Program Window says no sequence)

Hey, I was trying to edit a bunch of .mpg files together, in a new project file, in a sequence 01, and all the primary editing windows came up, and while I can easily get the source window to recognize sequence 01, both the timeline and the program window say no sequence and dragging sequence 01 or any of the .mpg videos does nothing.
Since I can't even see the timeline of this I can't edit, so if someone could help me as soon as possible that would be great

Double click any sequence in the bin to open it.
This kind of basic functionality is pretty well covered in the Help file. I recommend reading it all the way through before you use Premiere.

Program window is slightly zoomed in versus the source window

Hello, I've used final cut for years and have switched over to premiere, I have cs5.5. My question is: I have imported the .mov file and viewed it in the source window, it looks great, when I put that into the timeline, double click it into the program window, the entire image is zoomed in a little, cutting off parts of the edges and the top and bottom, I exported the file thinking it would revert back to the original, but it's still zoomed in. Is there settings that can match the source to the program? What am I doing? Thanks so much, Newbie

Well, the Source Monitor shows the file, in a player, from the HDD. The Program Monitor shows the Timeline, and the Clips on it, for editing. They are different.

The title does not show up in the Program Sequence window in PP CC

I am trying to add a simple title in one of the clips of a video that I am editing. I can see the title in the title window with the clip in the background but when I play the video the playback doesn't show the title but the clip.
How can I can I solve this problem? I am using a trial version of PP CC.

I looked at the video. I did exactly the same thing. What do you mean by "poke out the eyeball on that track"? Do you refer to the little icon on the top right corner of the title window that has an eye?
I have just done the following test: I created a colored background (green) and dragged that on the video track above my project then I added the title above this colored background on a third video track. Now the title shows up in the program window but the background is black not green. So it looks like that the title does not have a transparent background.
