Probably the edge shimmering you're seeing has more to do with the MPEG encoding than with Premiere's scaling/deinterlacing using MRQ. I've examined frame grabs of the downscaled footage when Lagarith is used, and the difference between an SD Lags frame and an SD MPEG2 DVD frame is enormous. (In fact, the Lags frame grab from Pr/MRQ for a downscaled progressive source is very close to the quality that hd2sd produces.) There are more tweaks to the MPEG2 DVD encoder settings that can be made to increase the quality, but I'm not that patient. If I'm using CS4 and not hd2sd, I export a Lags file from Pr and encode in Squeeze 5. I know Dan and Jim Simon both prefer the free HC Encoder.
I didn't go into great depth on optimizing the CS4 MPEG2 DVD settings in the tutorial because it wasn't a tutorial on the fine art of MPEG2 encoding. Plus, it was already 20 minutes long.
Regardless, I think the huge speed advantage that hd2sd has over MRQ makes hd2sd the preferred solution for most folks. But for users that don't want to mess with finding, installing, tweaking and generally hassling with the free open-source tools that are required for hd2sd, MRQ can get close enough for most purposes.

I am trying to use warp to curve a flat label into a rounded one (with the curve being like the lower half of a circle as if you are looking at the bottom from a slight top view). Creating .swf's in Photoshop CS4?

I have PS CS4, I found a tutorial for PS CS2 (Creative COW) that said you could export animations created in Photoshop as .swf's using Imageready through Photoshop. But I can't seem to find a similar tutorial, or anything, to export Flash files from Photoshop CS4?! Is it possible. I would really like to create my animated buttons for my Nav Bar with PS.
I guess I could fumble around in Flash, but I Iike the animation window in PS CS4, it's very similar to AfterEffects, which I love to use. Flash seems so clunky and you have to type in code and all that. Anyone have any tips?

No, to my knowledge PS does not spit out any form of Flash animation. If it would, it would be just rasterized image sequences such as you can create from within After Effects when you directly export an SWF. Still, speaking of that, since you have AE, why not do the animation there, combined with flash? Check out the requirements and workflow for exporting XFL files from AE, and you're already much closer...

Feathering a garbage mask in Premiere Pro CS4

Hello to all
I am new to this forum, so this is my first post..
The last two or three months i've been looking all over the internet for a solution to my problem.
And since i couldn't find any, i was kinda hoping that one of you guys could help me:
I recently used this tutorial (http://www.yapperdesign.com/tutorial_th ... p?watch=73) to achieve a walk through transition in premiere pro cs4. Although the tutorial is made in FCP, the workflow is pretty much the same for PP. Except for one thing: I am currently having a very hard time finding a way to feather the garbage mask. after setting up a 16-point garbage mask i found out that there's no feather option or something similar. I've already tried it with the effect "edge feather", it didn't work though.
I'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong, but when i apply it to the layer where the mask is, it seems that the effect only affects to the edges of the frame, but not to the mask itself (see picture: http://www.videocopilot.net/forum/download/file.php?id=4248&mode=view).
below the video you may see some tipps from the guy that made the tutorial. Unfortunately, none of them did work for me. So i thought, maybe one of you guys would know a solution..?

Where is the location for filter plugin dialog in AI CS4?

Hello All,
Im using CS4. In CS4 SDK sample projects, "Tutorial" is a filter type plugin and I want to test this plugin.
Project is compiled fine and plugin created. Placed this plugin in plugins folder of AI.
and then started AI. The Tutorial plugin is showing under Object -> Filter -> SDK -> Tutorial
I have clicked on "Tutorial" plugin in filters menu. A dialog is opened. set the some parameters in the UI and then clicked on OK.
The dialog is disappeared after OK button clicked.
now, how can I get the same ("Tutorial") dialog again? Where can I see the "Tutorial" dialog in AI?
Just like if we apply a 3d Rotate effect, then the 3D Rotate effect dialog is visible under Appearance Panel. If we want to change the settings, we can click on "3D Rotate" in Appearance panel, then 3D Rotate dialog will be opned.

Depending on what your filter does (namely, if it leaves an effect or if it just modifies the art) it may leave an entry in the Appearance panel. This is usually for 'Effects' not filters though the distinction is a little blurry. One of the reasons they took out the Filters menu in CS4 is because most 'filters' were in fact just art operations and better suited to be placed as menuitems in more appropriate places. Effects are really bits of code that get fired when necessary on art to modify their representation on the page based on parameters.
If you're just doing something to art once (like simplifying the art, or reflecting the art) then you're not an effect. If that's the case, you can just create a menuitem anywhere you feel is right if you don't want to be locked into Object > Filter. Being a filter doesn't actually give you much advantage anymore. You might just want to create a menuitem, respond to it and do your work. Filters come with baggage like filter parameters and 'fire last filter' and whatnot, and frankly, that's being phased out. Its more a Photoshop concept shoehorned into Illustrator.

Getting Started With CF 8 Tutorial

In the tutorial, there is a "+" in the databases tab in
DreamWeaver to add a new database. I dont have a plus. If I right
click and choose "Modify Database", it takes me to the admin login.
I can add the db there and then go back to the databases tab in
DreamWeaver and and do a refresh and the db shows up. I have CF 8
and DreamWeaver 8. Why cant I do it all in DreamWeaver? Also, whats
the difference between DreamWeaver 8 and DreamWeaver CS4? Is this
Tutorial done with the CS 4 version of DreamWeaver?

How to delete editable regions and template?

Hi everybody,
I posted this question earlier in the web discussions area, being unaware of a forum specific to Dreamweaver. Sorry for posting in two different places.
For the past week, I have been learning Dreamweaver CS4 from an online tutorial. I got to the place where I generated a template (index.dwt) from the main page (index.html) and created some editable regions on it. At that point, I realized that I had done all the steps by rote and did not actually absorb what I was doing. I wanted to delete the template in order to repeat the steps and gain a better understanding of the process. When I tried to delete the editable regions (modify-templates-remove editable regions), I was unable to do so because "remove editable regions" was greyed out. Nor was I able to delete the html code. I tried to delete the template itself, but when I did that, the index.html page retained those editable regions! Can anyone tell me if there is a way to get back to the place I was in before creating the template?

All you need to do is detach the index.html file from the template. Then you can delete the template and start all over.
Go to the Modify menu --> Templates --> Detach from Template

Saving Dyanamically Linked Projects

Hi Fellows,
MY HISTORY: I made the jump from Adobe Video Collection on a P3 PC to, last year, CS4 Production Premium and now to CS5 on an i7 Quad with 4 1GB drives. What a hugh difference and an enormous learning curve. My problem with a Project slowing down on the i7 with CS4 after approx 5 rapid sequential operations appears to be solved with CS5. I imagine this was partly due to a synchronous problem as a result of switching and routing bit streams using 32 bit software on a 64 bit PC in addition to what may be a slower memory or drive component. I find that the tutorials are excellent.
My ROBLEM: I have looked but have so far been unable to find information on how to correctly save a dynamically linked Project and open all the linked programs correctly so all the updates are saved. I found reference to a bug in CS4 and an excellent tutorial on how to save time by not having to render all imported Projects into P.Pro CS5. Again, I wonder how I should save say 2 Projects from AE and Encore into P.Pro using these timer saving operations with the ability to recover where I left off. If my question has already been answered, please point me in the right direction.

There is only one way to save, with or without Dynamic Linking involved.
You initiate the Save command, either with a keyboard shortcut or through the menu. There's no trick to it, nothing special because there may be DL elements in the project. Any changes made to the base project will just show up automatically in the DL'd project.
Opening those projects is also accomplished in the normal fashion, nothing is different about it.

Hyperlink frustration links not working.

im web hunting to try to solve the problem with the hyperlink feature in cs4,ive found a tutorial but im confused cos its saying that the hyperlink
feature from cs3 to cs4 is different now.
can some one pls tell me how this is done in cs4 i found it on the web.
Here’s how you do it in CS2 or CS3: After making the button (either by choosing Object > Interactive > Convert to Button or using the Button tool), double-click on the edge of the button object to open the Button Options dialog box (or choose object > interactive > button options). Then click on the Behaviors tab and choose Go to URL from the Behavior pop-up menu. Type in the URL, click the Add button, then click OK.
Now the button itself will trigger the hyperlink, and you don’t need to use the Hyperlinks panel at all. Also, don’t forget to turn on the Interactive Elements checkbox in the Export PDF dialog box! Without that, the buttons don’t work at all

Can I constrain mouse to loaded swf? (beginner question)

Hi folks, I built a movie in flash CS4 based on the tutorial here:

This also happens when I test it (ctrl-enter) and make the resulting box bigger... the mouse will not fade at the border of the swf any more, but at the border of the containing window....) is there a (easy) way to constrain the mouse behaviour within the box of the loaded swf (like the MOUSELEAVE event triggered when i leave the box of the loaded swf in stead of the entire stage?) I restricted the mouse within the containing box by monitoring it's position in de container. thanks for that tip!

so next step is: How do I get my mouse back? (the swf in the container contains a Mouse.hide and Mouse.show doesn't seem to do anything?
and 2nd is how do I get the MOUSELEAVE function to fire in de contained swf when the containermouse is no longer over the contained swf?
I will check out the Attaboy tip now.. see if I can find more info on that.

Intro Tutorial for Flash CS4

I am new to Flash Professional CS4. I would like to

What's the best way (book/tutorial) to learn CS4? (web design context)

I'm very new to photoshop and have been hunting around the internet looking at tutorials picking up things here and there... but I would really prefer to get a book that contains everything I need to know. Preferably in a 'follow along' style, as opposed to one big reference manual.
Can you recommend a good book (or if a not a good tutorial series) on using CS4? I'm most interested in using PhotoShop for web design. While I'm not interested in using DreamWeaver etc, I just want to learn how to make simple things for web design. Buttons. Banners. Etc.

Step by step using basic tools and steps. Then some harder things tossed in but easy to master. Plus you can play with the settings to see different results.
PS CS4 The missing Manual is good too and really digs deep.
