CS4 / HDR workflow

I am beginning to use CS4's 'Merge to HDR' function - or rather, I would if I could get it to work.
Last week I merged a few bracketed images and did tone mapping but now when I load new images and merge them the screen will go blank before the 32-bit image is rendered.
Just installed 11.0.2 but I can't even complete the first step in the HDR process.  Is this a known issue and if so, how do I overcome it?  Or am I missing something very basic?

I'd try that, certainly.  There is a point, however, at which things start to starve for RAM.  I hope you'll be able to find a happy medium.
The long-term solution for this might be to get more RAM, or possibly ultimately move up to a 64 bit system.
I know that I've seen things work a lot better myself since I moved up to 16 GB from 8 GB RAM.  There doesn't seem to be a limit on how much is "enough" for Photoshop.

  • CS4 Q: workflow, proxy, etc.

    Hello -
I just left the question below with the CineForm support folks on their site too. I thought you all may have some great feedback about what codecs are available in Media Encoder (CS4 for now) that can repserve as much of my source footage quality as possible.
My main question for this forum is - what is the best codec I can use to cut my full HD footage (AVCHD - Cannon HFS21) down to qHD(960x540 range) or smaller and keep the best quality?
If I can do that as losslessly as possible in getting them down to quarter size then I can pump up my high res one from there in cineform  and also export low res for editing (proxy/offline)
    Thanks!
    Rich
    =========================
I have a new editing workstation on order (4 weeks.. ugg!) and so I'm looking for a workflow that lets me proxy files first. Even your full frame HD low res files are too big for my laptop to deal with pleasantly (no surprise, huh?) I really wish your tools would allow me to drop to qHD for both low and high res. Or even smaller. At this point I'm be happy working in that size range for the rest of my workflow.
So..... any tips would be appreciated. I'd be happy to drop to some intermediate format before coming into cineform but at this stage I am not sure which of the codecs in my CS4 (yes CS5 next month when the 64b OS box arrives) would be the safest in terms of preserving what quality there is in my AVCHD/MTS source files. I'm thinking AVI since that seems to be your preferred format. Are there others?
I'm thinking this for a flow...
AVCHD (HD) -> AVI (qHD) -> CFM AVI (qHD) Low (Proxy) & CFM AVI (qHD) High (Final)
Being a newbie I'm sure that I'm missing some key insight. Workflow advice appreciated!

Good to get that confirmation of my assuption. I spent the better part of a weekend trying out every combination of downsizing combined with proxy files and nothing could extract from h.264 ACVHD and retain any quality. CineForm does really well and recreating larger files with higher color data in it's own app window, but it sucks at downsizing via media encoder as a code selection. Of course I am in CS4 until me new hardware arrives in 4 weeks.
    Thanks

  • Grab Tool Issue with CS4 crimping Workflow, Solution?

Hi, I've been a consistent Photoshop user for the past 10 years and have upgraded to CS4 about 9 months ago.
I have an issue where I can't (spacebar-> grab tool) to move my image around without zooming in first.  If the side of the image is not being clipped by the window your working in the grab tool will not work.  I haven't found a way to turn this off.
I figured I would get used to this but I'm still running into it every day. Instead I've noticed myself just automatically pulling the window off the top bar and grabbing the edge to shrink it so I can actually move myself around.
I see no possible reason why they changed the functionality of the grab tool...unless they assume that every photoshop user has two monitors, one for pallettes and one for the working image?  Even then why would they have collapsible pallettes?
It is THE most frustrating things I've ever experienced since I've used photoshop.
Is there a setting or option that I'm missing?

Thanks Mylenium, I hope your not right!  But you probably are...  I've asked everyone at work what they do about it and most don't use spacebar as a shortcut so it hasn't been much of an issue for them, though they do all admit they grab windows off the top bar right away and move pallettes/windows with their mouse when needed, but that's just a supream waste of time and effort when you can just quickly spacebar grab and throw.  Plus I like keeping my pallettes in the same places so I know where to look when working.
My other friend whos employed elsewhere has the same problem as me and actually went back to CS3 because he couldn't use his spacebar shortcut the same way.

  • Automating my AE(CS4) composition workflow?

This may be a very basic process and if so I apologize in advance. I have a workflow for doing certain comps in AE. I use alot of keyframes and they are very repetative. Meaning I use alot of the same comp settings, keyframes etc in each comp BUT they do occur at different places in each individual comp timeline. I find myself working on 20-30 comps and placing the same comp settings, type of keyframes for each, thus pretty much the same process over and over (again, they do occur at different times so I can't just cut n paste keyframes from the first comp to the rest, or can I?) Is there such a thing as a comp template or something I can build/save that lays down the foundation of my comp that I can then tweak.
I'm taking sports footage for example; football plays. I pick a spot in the footage to freeze, highlight the player, then resume play. I do a new comp for each play/piece of footage. If there were some type of template I could drop footage into that places all the same keyframes I use and then have the ability to move them around to where I need them, would be awesome. It's very time consuming to do alot of the same things over and over for each comp. Any feedback is much apreciated!
    Dave~

If you have certain template compositions that you would like to reuse, consider saving them in a project and then importing that project into each project that you're working on. Then you can have a library of resources in your Project panel for reuse. You could also look into template projects. See "Projects".
At the more fine-grained level, if you have certain sets of effects and keyframes that you use a lot, consider saving your own animation presets.

  • 4.1 HDR workflow: automatic import to LR?

When using Photoshop HDR Pro with Lightroom, is there any way to have the HDR TIF produced in PS automatically imported into the Lightroom catalog?
Auto-import happens for me in the loop between LR and PS for single-image edits, but isn't happen in the loop between LR and PS for "Merge to HDR Pro."

Your video prompted me to try "Save" instead of "Save As." If I "Save", the results are automatically imported -- but if I "Save As", the results are not. Weird ... but ultimately not an problem, as the default "Save" behavior works just fine for me.
    Thanks!

  • Merge to HDR in PS CS4 broken

I'm using Photoshop CS4 as part of Creative Suite CS4 on a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard.  When executing the File>Automate>Merge to HDR command, the program crashes with the following error: The command "<unknown>" is not currently available.  This error occurs at the very end of the script, after it has successfully imported the individual images into layer and has created the merged image.  A screen shot of the message is attached.
It seems to have crashed in the course of processing the exposure information.  If I click OK the image simply disappears.  I would really appreciate suggestions on how to troubleshoot and correct this issue, since one of my HDR workflows is now completely inoperative!  Thanks!
    Peter

ChrisThanks for checking into the problem, I really appreciate you going to
the trouble of taking the photos.  It appears we are doing the exact same
thing.  I'm also using a tripod and since i cant bracket through 9 shots i
have to roll through the shutter changes which gives a slight mis-alignment,
    I always use a tripod.
I dont have any plugins, this was a new upgrade, hdr never worked for large
images from day 1 with CS4 (worked fine in CS2).  I had a horrible time
installing, nothing worked, it crashed, stuff missing etc.  The first 2 days
of the tech support nightmare was just trying to get it installed or to
recognize my old serial #. Finally someone there said uninstall everything
(5th or 6th time by then) and you must install acrobat first then the rest
of CS4....? He then said that it was a known issue for installing on
    WinXP-64 ! Not well known.
Once it was "working" I noticed there was no pdf output and hdr didnt work -
so another day at tech support, on hold and given the runaround because no
one there had a clue how to fix either problem. They would give me the wrong
answer, hang up and close my case!  A lot of my correspondance from those
cases is missing hmmmm?!  Oh, if only those calls were really being
recorded, i would pay for a copy of those! course you'd have to edit out the
16 hrs i spent on hold!  Anyway, I found that i was just missing the output
module, found that out on someone's blog. Tech support didnt know that ?!
HDR was replicted, but no response. Included below is my last ticket which i
will not close and they will not answer.
I did more tests myself, all using align with a group of 9 images shot as
jpgs sRGB 5616 x 3744 (so they are only about 6-10 MB each)
using 3 of the 9 images (center, and 2 extremes) it took 1 min
    using 4 images: 4 min
    using 5 images: 7 min
    using 6 images: 18 min
using 9 images:  gave up after 45 min (had to crash out, can't cancel)
I shrunk the images down to 3600 pixels and tried all 9 and it completed in
    29 min (see attached)
I monitored the task manager and saw that the memory usage was only about
1/2 available (4 G ) and all 8 processors worked through most of the align
    function
Since I was able to do all 9 at full size in CS2 in a couple of minutes, and
you can currently do 10 at about the same or less, then the only differnce i
can see is that my CS4 is WinXP-64 and my CS2 was the 32-bit version ?  Can
I also install CS4-32-bit?  or even my old  CS2-32-bit on another drive?  I
shudder to think of going through that installation nightmare again.
    Thanks,
    Pete A

  • Photo Edit in CS4 not working

    Hello,
    THE SETUP
I have LR 3.3 and PS CS 4 Version 11.0.2 on a Mac running OS X.6.7.
My "About Lightroom" screen reports the presence of Camera Raw 6.3.
In my LR preferences under "External Editing" tab, I have the option to "Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4" as PSD / sRGB / 16 bit / rez 300. There is no "Additional External Editor" present.
I have installed in Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS4/File Formats the Camera Raw Plug-in version 5.7. When I choose Photoshop>About Plugin>Camera Raw I see that CR version 5.7.0.213 is present.
    THE PROBLEM
When I select photo(s) [CR2 file(s)] in LR3 and choose Photo>Edit in> none of the external edit-in-Photoshop options work. First, I get a message saying "This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 6.3 for full compatibility."
I resent this suggestion, since that version of Camera Raw only works with CS5.
When I click "Open Anyway," PS opens and loads, but that's it. None of the images from LR appear.
I get the same (non)-results with all of the options (edit in CS4, HDR, panorama, smart object, etc.) under "Photo>Edit In." Photoshop launches, but no image appears.
The only way I can get a photo to open in PS from within LR is to choose Photo>Edit in>Edit in Adobe Photoshop CS4, and then when the warning dialog comes up about the Camera Raw plug-in version, click "Render in Lightroom." When I do that, LR renders the image and it opens in CS4. But that doesn't help me do what I really want to do, which is to select bracketed exposures in LR, merge them to HDR in CS4, and save them back to LR.
I have searched for help on this and come up dry. I did find this http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?9974-Open-as-layers-in-Photoshop-command-not -working, but I reinstalled the CR 5.7 plug-in as described and saw no change.
Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Lr 3.3 and CS4 are not fully compatible so your experience is the result of that.
You will have to bite the bullet and upgrade to CS5 if you dont want to "Render in LR".
I've worked for quite a while with LR 3 and CS3 and experienced similar problems - the only way out is that you select "Render in LR".
It's not such a big deal. When you select "Render in LR", Lr creates the psd that then opens in CS4.
With CS5 it works this way: The RAW file opens in CS5 but when you save in CS5 a psd is generated.

  • Is Version Cue CS4    TOO SLOW TO USE??????

Is it just me or is the new CS4 versioncue workflow extremely slow?
After installing Version Cue CS4 on the same server that was running CS3 and trying to open an existing InDesign project (book with dozens of linked images), I realized that using VersionCue CS4 is so painfully slow compared to CS3 that it's unusable.
It seems that VC CS4 does not create local copies on the hard drive and instead, all traffic is sent over the relatively slow Ethernet connections. While this does help with synchronizing confusions, it makes working on the projects way too slow.
VC CS4 is running with 768MB on my server, so I don't think that is the problem.
Will someone respond to this post and let me know if (a) I'm probably doing something wrong and everything will be OK, or (b) if I can install CS4 and still use VC CS3 on the server?
    thanks in advance!

Thanks for the response.. It seems a bit hit or miss on opening up my projects.
For example, if I click on a PDF file in Bridge, it takes upwards of a minute to launch Acrobat 9 and display the first page. If I open Acrobat 9 first, and then click on the PDF, it opens almost instantly.
Also, we have a job with a Microsoft PPT slideshow. When editing the slide show and saving back to the Version Cue 4 server (pressing save in the PowerPoint program), it takes upwards of a minute.
This is with 768MB allocated to the stand-alone server, and 1GB assigned to the Adobe Drive CS4 cache on the client computer.
Does anyone know how to get VC CS4 or Adobe Drive to operate faster?

  • InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (mac) not working

My client and I are trying to establish an InCopy CS4 (PC) / InDesign CS4 (Mac) workflow. Neither of us has ever used InCopy and we are all getting frustrated now that our first production cycle has come and gone and the client is not recouping the money they invested on this software. Our trial system was successful for awhile and then it just stopped. The client says she can't open the icma/icml files and they need the indd file. So I send a new batch of files with the indd included and still no luck.
I'm saving the assigments like I've been saving in our initial trial run. In ID I go to Incopy > Export > Add all Stories to Assignment. That creates the content folder and the .icma files. I zip everything and send it off via email attachment.
Is there something I am doing wrong? Something my client needs to do? I prefer not to have to send the indd file. Should I have to do that for them to edit in Incopy? I appreciate any advice. Thank you.  Lynn

Don't zip the files, that won't work.ID/IC is meant to work on a local server w/local staff. For a remote workflow you have to use a special technique.
After you create the assignment, use the Package for InCopy command in the Assignments panel. That creates an ICAP file that you send to the client.
When the double-click the ICAP file, it unpacks (it's like a zip file) on their computer and the assignment opens in InCopy. They work on the stories, and when they're done, they use the Return for InDesign command in *their* Assignments panel menu. That creates an IDAP file that they send to you.
When you open the IDAP file, it unpacks, looks for the INDD file (be sure not to rename or move it in the meantime), and updates the stories w/the editors changes.
Those are the broad strokes. It's covered more thoroughly in the online help file of both ID and IC ... you *and* your client should read up on it. And I cover it very thoroughly (4 videos ... Chapter 15) in my online Lynda.com tutorial on the CS4 workflow:
    http://www.lynda.com/home/DisplayCourse.aspx?lpk2=651
(Chapter 15 isn't one of the freebie chapters, but you (or anyone) can use my 24-hour free pass for full access to their entire training library: http://lynda.com/freepass/amconcepcion)

  • Can I use both CS4 and CS5 separately so as to use Version Cue ?

I am thinking about buying CS5 to keep up to date.
I cannot do without Version Cue which is only CS4.
Can I buy the upgrade and run them to take advantage of both ?

Yes, you can run both CS4 and CS5 simultaneously, however, you must first launch CS5, then launch CS4. I don't know much about Version Cue or whether it would still work in a CS4/5 workflow, but you could always try the 30-day CS5 Trial as a test.

  • Aperture & HDR & Photostitching

    Hi
I use Aperture, and am quite keen to get into HDR & stitching photo's for Panoramic shots. I know that there is the Hydra plug-in for Aperture, I have downloaded the trial version, its not bad but seems basic.
I have read about PTGui & Autopano Pro and was wondering if anyone already using these applications, or any other dedicated software would care to comment on what they are like, or any other brand for that matter...
Also do the above applications interact with Aperture, and is it possible to edit with them, from within Aperture.
Any comments would be appreciated and helpful...
    Thanks..... W

I'm currently using Autopan Pro, and Photoshop for creating pans. I find them both to be excellent, with a slight edge to Photoshop for alignment and ghosting. I also use Photomatix Pro and Photoshop for HDR. My experiments give Photoshop an edge once again for alignment and ghosting, but control of the HDR image is almost non-existent. Also, tonemapping is a manual process, and I'm not smart enough to deal with it. Therefore, unless there are major problems with movement during bracketing, I use Photomatix Pro most of the time. If I create the HDR with Photoshop, I save it as an open exr file and tonemap in Photomatix Pro. There is an excellent tutorial on HDR at http://stuckincustoms.com/2006/06/06/548/. Take a look, the author uses multiple applications in the creation of his final picture example.
I am currently researching how well Aperture fits in the HDR workflow since it seems to pack all image files into its own filesystem or library where the individual files lose their identity and accessibility through the Mac filesystem. I don't know this to necessarily be true, but right now I believe it to be. If so, I believe it rules-out Aperture for me. There are many things I like about it, but I need to be able to easily bounce image files around to many different applications and the Aperture interface/filesystem seems to make the task too cumbersome. Also, from reading this forum I believe that when you import RAW files into Aperture they are automatically manipulated. Something I need to understand more about also.
    I hope this helps.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro Keeps Crashing

    Hello,
I could really use some help here. I have Adobe CC with an up to date Premiere Pro CC. I'm using a late 2012 Mac mini OS X 10.9.3.
I synced two videos using PluralEyes 3 (I've heard you can do the same thing with Premiere now), and when I'm editing footage I always receive this message (see below) followed by Adobe trying to save the video. It's always when I try to move the footage on the timeline or trim the footage. The few times I was able to "cut" without the program crashing, the "cut" tool never actually worked, or at least show up on the timeline.
    Any thoughts?
In the past I downloaded 19lights (a company that is now out of business) to create HDR workflows. I'm not sure if that has effected anything or not. Is it possible to completely uninstall and reinstall Premiere, including any third-party plugins I might have added?
Thanks in advance for your help!

First, I will move this to the Premiere Pro forum

Not necessarily. You can run the library in Referenced mode.
but I need to be able to easily bounce image files around to many different applications
Depending on your intended use, the Aperture library is available in every Open... dialogue in the OS.
Also, from reading this forum I believe that when you import RAW files into Aperture they are automatically manipulated.
    Absolutely untrue.

  • What are the details of improved LR/CS4 workflow?

    Hi
I'm looking at Adobe's CS4 site listing improved LR workflow and integration with CS4. They mention merge to panorama, HDR etc as being improved. Given I can do this already in CS3/LR2.0 what are the improvements?
    Regards
    Michael

    >That is an improvement as it is the little things that can become tedious when in a rush to finish a job.
It was not a bug. CS3 had already shipped before Lightroom ever had the ability to communicate directly with Photoshop. When the CS3 10.0.1 update was released it included some of the necessary communication code (BridgeTalk), but not all. The links for features such as: Open as Smart Objects, Open in Layers, Merge to HDR and Merge to Panorama were not included in 10.0.1 because it predated Lr2.x. It's only with the introduction of CS4 that all of the necessary links and code became available.

  • Error when trying to use Automate Merge to HDR... in Photoshop CS4

    Hello,
I am using Photoshop CS4 on a new MacBook Pro running 10.5.6.
If i select "Automate>Merge to HDR..." or "Automate>Photomerge...", i get an alert with an error:
« Error 48: File or folder does not exist.
    Line: 38
    -> $.evalFile(g_StackScriptFolderPath + "LatteUI.jsx"); »
I went the whole uninstall-reinstall the Design Premium suite, but i still get the same error.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
PS : A file named LatteUI.jsx does exist at the location /Volumes/Applications/Adobe CS4/Adobe Photoshop CS4/Presets/Scripts/Stack Scripts Only/LatteUI.jsx, and obviously i have installed the suite on a different folder than the default...

This is not an error of installation.  I have had photoshop CS4 installed on a completely different partition on a Macbook and a MacPro.  They were running fine.  All the necessary files were installed to the system drive during installation.  I too am having this problem, but it was the upgrade to snow leopard that caused it.  I am searching for a solution to it, when I find it, I will post it.
