CS4 hungs after aborting text frame creation within command interceptor

Hi all
I´m using a command interceptor for cancelling any geometry modification to a locked -custom lock- document.
The interceptor gets kNewPageItemCmdBoss commands and, if the document is "locked", aborts them by returning a ICommandInterceptor::kCmdHandled result. This works fine for image rectangles, lines, etc.Their creation gets canceled.
The problem is with text frames; after aborting them, InDesign CS4 hungs.
I guess there is another object creation related, that gets orphaned, but don´t know which. Any idea?

I finally solved the problem. Textframe creation involves many commands, and can´t be aborted in the kNewPageItemCmdBoss phase. I used kNewFrameCmdBoss, and setting global error within this change works, using only a document observer, without needing a command interceptor

ID CS4 slow after pasting text from MS Word

Each time I paste text from a Word document into my ID CS4 document, ID begins to run very slowly. I can't even type properly. Has anyone else seen this?
I have fixed this problem by copying all the text and pasting in the a new document (I thought the document was possibly corrupted). This fixed the problem, but it has happened multiple times now. Much of my information comes from engineers' word documents, so this is not convenient.

The best I can tell, it is related to the cross references, and that it happened after pasting was coincedental. It could have been that pasting made a cross referenced section move to another page, so it was trying to update.
The cross references are a little buggy:
EVERY time I create a cross ref from the cross ref menu (in the cross ref window), ID CS4 (with all patches) crashes. If I create them from the Text menu (at the top), it doesn't crash.
If you have a large number of cross refs in a doc, it becomes slow.
When slowness occurs, I have found that updating the cross refs and then resolving all errors in the cross ref window usually clears it up.

CS4 editable master text frames in CS5 no longer editable

Hi,
Problem: Text frames on CS4 document pages (from locked text frames on masterpage) are no longer editable on CS5 document pages.
CS4 situation:
Masterpages contain text frames which are locked to prevent users from inadvertently moving them when working on document pages.
On document pages, the text frames can be edited, i.e. text entered, but are position-locked.
CS5 problem:
When you now open the same document, the text frames on the document pages are totally locked, the positioning as well as the content. This means they are no longer editable! The only way I have found to make them editable once again is to unlock the text frames. But unlocking also removes the position lock.
What do I have to do to get things working in CS5 like they were in CS4? Any quick solution or is this simply no longer possible?

As I just had some trouble finding the where to change this setting,
for anyone working with the German version of InDesign CS5:
Menü: Bearbeiten > Voreinstellungen > Allgemein
then under "Objektbearbeitung", remove the checkmark from "Auswahl von gesperrten Objekten verhindern"

Hairline between adjacent text frames

The attached Indesign CS4 document has two text frames with a black background that touch near the bottom of the document. When I look at this document in preview mode in InDesign, there is a horizontal hairline between the two text frames. When I export this document as a pdf the hairline is not present.
Does anyone know what is causing this?

I thnink this is a display anomaly. That white line is really the graphic behind the upper frame showing through, which will become much more apparent if you remove the stroke from the two frames. It seems to disappear if you zoom in.

Text disappearing from CS4 text frame.

I work in a studio environment with multiple computers/users sharing files from the same server. Occassionally when I (or another user) opens an InDesign CS4 file there will be text missing from one or more text frames. The frame is still there, but it is empty. If I close the file without saving and then re-open it, the text may re-appear in that frame, but text may be missing from a different frame, or no text will be missing at all – seemingly a completely random occurrance. We have tried to resolve whether this happens with missing/conflicting fonts, but there seems to be no correlation. The problem is not repeatable, but happens at least once a month. We cannot narrow down any ther common denominators within the files.
We run Mac Pros and iMacs, OS X 10.5.8 or later, InDesign Creative Suite 4, Suitcase Fusion 2 and we are running a Windows Server (sorry, no other details on that).
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have hidden text enabled and there is nothing in the frame. These are standalone frames – not linked to any other frames, so it wouldn’t seem to be a re-flow issue. My gut is telling me that it’s font-related, as we have MANY font conflicts between computers, however the issue sometimes occurs without the “Missing Fonts” alert appearing upon opening.
Suitcase Fusion 2… Unfortunately that may be the culprit. Yet another reason to not like that product, unfortunately. I will research that line of reasoning and report back.

Do text frames have an (internal) "number / creation date"?

Assumption:
I suspect, that (automatic list + paragraph) numbering depends on when a text frame was created.
Situation:
I have made a paragraph text style with paragraph numbering and list numbering. Works fine, so far: I can even create multiple text frames (the three green ones in the below picture) that are not connected with / chained to each other and the numbering still is correct.
Problem:
But when I create a new text frame (with the color pink in the picture) later on, which shall be inserted as e.g. second in order, the numbering still orientates at the frame creation. Correct would be: the pink paragraph "5. new frame" should be numbered as "3.new frame", the green paragraph "3. drei" should then be numbered as "4. drei" and so forth.
Question:
How can I change the frame creation number? Can it be changed at all?

But when dealing with an object with many pages, this can be tedious, though. So, is there another way? Is there a way to change the text frame order by e.g. entering a new value for its number somewhere within InDesign?

Text wrap for a paragraph: How to define the width of a Text box / active text area? I simply need a longish text to wrap within the frame!

Hello, I've been searching for a good while in the forums now, but have found no solution or real mention of the problem – I hope some of you can help.
I want to very simply layout a text between scenes, a slightly longer text that wraps within the frame margins. Here's an example of how I want it to look:
Now, I couldn't for the life of me get the Custom Text to behave like that, as there are no parameters to set for the width of the text area. The Text Size, yes, along with the Tracking, Baseline and all that, but the width of the text box, no. The above was created by customizing one of the other Text Generator presets that happened to be left aligned.
However, this preset has a fade in/fade out transition, which I do not want. There's no way to remove this transition as it seems integrated into the Text Generator (meaning they are not really presets, but separate kinds of Text objects? Very silly.)
So I am asking you: Is there any way to get the Custom Text generator to behave like that? Just a text paragraph as above. Below you'll see all I can manage with the diffferent Custom Text parameters. Any kind of repositioning and resizing of the text just changes the position and size of the frame – but the actual text items are just cropped off where they extend out of that frame. Apparently the bounding box for the text is just some default length, and I can't find any way to adjust the width. See below my different attempts.
The same text pasted into a Custom Text generator clearly extends outside the frame:
Here Transform just moves – or resizes – the video frame that the Text Box exists inside:
The Crop gives similar results, and of course Distort doesn't get me closer to what I need, either. There should be simply a Text Box Width parameter to set somewhere, but if it exists they have hidden it very well. How do you do it?
Thanks for any help, this is a silly problem, but one of now many trivial problems that amount to me growing quite dissatisfied with FCPX. Hopefully I've just overlooked something.

Thomas...same kind of crap here.
I used Custom Text - entered a sentence, hit return, entered another.
Set to 72 pt.
The default alignment is centred - I want left aligned text...the text start point stays at the centre of frame and the sentence runs off the edge of the bounding box.
There is no settings in the Text or Title inspector dialog to correct that!
Using Transform will not sort it!

Why are InDesign text frames uneditable, or converted to outlined objects, when opened in CS4?

When opening a CS3 Layout in CS4 to make client text changes, all the text frame box edges (on their appropriate layers) are shown as dotted lines, and none of the type is editable!
I restored the old version, and opened in CS3 old version, and the same thing applies! Arggggh - there must be a frame preference that I don't know about or an instruction accidentally given.
How do I convert the text boxes back to editable regions? Got a deadline and am miffed.
I am a 20 year veteran of Pagemaker/Indesign/CS and this has never happened to me before!

Dotted lines for frame edges means that the item is on the Master Page. That’s why you can’t edit items, because they are on the Master, not on the numbered page. Either Command-Shift-click on the object to edit it or edit it on the Master Page. You should find out why so much of the document was built on the Master Page. Either the designer meant this to be a template for multiple existing or future pages, or someone just wasn’t paying attention and didn’t realize they were designing on the Master.

Duplicate spread causes some text to shift within its frame

Hi,
Indesign CS5 problem:
When I duplicate the first page of my working document some text shifts vertically within its frame on the duplicate page.
The same thing happens if I copy the text box and paste in place, the shift also occurs.
This is a small grab of the file with the 1st page on the left and the duplicate page (or paste in place) on the right.
Its driving me nuts, any help much appreciated.

Aha, you have got somewhere then! Something is causing that type to shift, why it isn't in your original doesn't matter, the idml one is "cleaner" and now the behaviour makes sense in that both frames are bahaving the same. There must be something somewhere, I assume you've checked the baseline shift in the control panel?

How to Embed a Text Frame Within a Text Frame with Smart Text Reflow

This is driving me nuts, and I've wasted hours searching exhaustively but can't seem to find the answer.
I've been working with this indesign file and cleaning it up really well. I now have all the text flowing with smart text reflow. There are two parts in the book that have columns of information, or tables. The way it was originally done was having a text box placed inside the text box. But unfortunately, whenever you add pages before or after, the text box won't follow with the text box it is inside. I have tried grouping the two text boxes together, but this doesn't seem to work with Smart Text Reflow (since every page is based on the primary master). How do you embed a text frame inside another text frame that is based off the primary master? I guess it would be like using the text frame as an object.
I included an image to help my explanation.
I even tried adding columns and then spannign the header part across, but this still doesn't flow with the rest of the text.

ANchor it into the other text fram, look in the help file. Keyword = Anchored Objects.

After unlink or unthread the last text frame, it still points to the old story

I used 'kTextUnlinkCmdBoss' to unlink the last text frame from the thread, however, after the command is processed if I access the textModel of the box as follows it still points to the old model:

I've looked everywhere and tried what I found in Adobe help. I can't FOR THE LIFE OF ME figure out how to unthread text frames in InDesign CS4 [Mac].

Run the SplitStory scipt thats in the samples in the scripts panel.
A waord of caution, though. Splitting a threaded story caused ID to treat the text at the top of each frame as a new paragraph, even if it was caninued from a previous frame. This can result in unwanted changes like an indent, if such is called for in the paragraph style, or an extra number or bullet item in a list.

I copied text & paisted it and then draged the 3 photos from the file...then clicked on the photo then clicked the inline boxon tool bar nexed to floating one and that is how I did it
I do not know what you mean "cut & paist" how do I get the photo in from my picter folder if I do not drag it to the page in Pages?
I went to my photo folder and copied a photo and paisted the photo on the top left part of the page and it went there but there was no text to the right of photo...I could crop the photo to what ever size but no text to the right of photo...
This is just too big of a mess of a program as it should be easier then this,,,I hav e 300 photos in this project and would have to re-paist them all...that is nuts...
I see the button to the right of inline and floating that has 6 [lace to have the photo but the text does not float around the photo...
If this is what your talking about this very little freedom in my page layout as I need it to let me place it where I need it to be and the wrap the text...
There has to be an easier way to get my books ready for other formats other that Apple's iPad...iBooks Author was way eisier to make ready for iTunes...Love that program!!!
Want my books for sale on all the other formats and was told by Apple Pages whould do it...

I can't select text within a text frame.

I'm very rusty with InDesign, so forgive me if this is a stupid question. I am simply trying to select text to cut and paste it. I have the Text tool selected, but I can't seem to select the text that's already in the text frame. The cursor doesn't even show up when I click in it. This only happens with one of my text frames. With the others, everything is working as expected.

Three possibilities:
The frame is locked.
The frame is on a locked layer.
The frame is on a Master Page.
