CS4 Illustrator wont save to PDF, programe just stops

Upgraded from CS2 to CS4 and everything is woking fine.
But when I try and save a file from Illustrator CS4 to a PDF the programe just stops working.  The mouse pointer moves fine and I can use other applications on the machine.
The machine is a P3 with 4 Gb of RAM on an SBS network.
Moved the default printer to Adobe PDF and nothing changes.  Even if I put one word on a blank A4 page in Illusrator still get the same fault.
Desperately need to save some work for a printer in H-Res PDF with bleed and trim.  Windows XP Prof with Service Pack 3.
Please help Chris

Hi Skullmarker
Yep, that did the trick!  Did the Shift Alt Control when Illustrator started, which reset all the preferences and that cured the problem!
Many many thanks, can get my work to the printers at last.
Top man, many thanks
Chris

  • How do I scan & save a PDF in just ONE step?

    How do I scan & save a PDF in just ONE step? I can easily scan a document to an OCR'd PDF, but it does not seem to save it until I manually select "save". Seems there should be a way to set up scans to a particular folder destination, with a naming convention & auto numbering, such as YYYYmmDD-0001, YYYYmmDD-0002, etc. I've looked thru the Create>PDF form scanner>configure presets, and no such item seems to exist. There IS a "add to existing document", but that's not what I want to do. I just want to select "scan", and have it create an OCR'd PDF file in a folder.

    Hi,
    You can achieve this via Action wizard. Auto Numbering is not possible however you can combine Scan and Save As in one action.
    Click Tool>Action Wizard
    Create New Action
    See screenshot and set the options that i have highlighted in blue
    Let me know if that helps.

  • Is it possible for me to script Illustrator to save as PDF and attach to email ?

    Hi,
    I am after a script to save my current working file as PDF (with some settings) and then bring up a blank outlook email with that file attached ?
    I do a lot of artwork and have to get it approved, I am getting bored of manually saving to PDF then going to find the file and then clicking send to > mail recipient etc etc
    You know the drill guys.
    So would it be possible for me to just run a script that does all that for me ready to insert the persons name or even add the persons name within the script ?
    thanks
    Lee

    Well, as the kids' paper-crafts book I used to try to put together which frustrated the hell out of me, mockingly read on the bottom of the instructions: "ТЕРПЕНИЕ И ТРУД ВСЕ ПЕРЕТРУТ"
    That is, patience and perseverance will overcome all.
    To use the below, you've gotta get Autohotkey_L, I believe, and it's not that hard to use.. but it takes some time to learn the various things if you want to write your own ones like this:
    {{YOUR_OWN_HOTKEY_HERE}}::
      MyTempFile = C:\Users\{{YOUR_USER_NAME}}\last_proof_sent.txt
      Run {{YOUR_JSX_SCRIPT}}.jsx                                                  ;Save the PDF proof - the script needs to write a temp text file in a place somewhere, which writes the full name of your saved PDF!
                                                                                                              ; I called my temp text file "last_proof_sent.txt"
      CurrentDateTime := A_Now                                                        ;get current time
      sleep, 500
      FileGetTime, FileTime, %MyTempFile%                                              ;get mod date of this temp file
      TimeCounter = 0                                                                                ;initialize time counter for waiting for PDF to save
      While(CurrentDateTime > FileTime and TimeCounter < 1000)                    ;waiting period to see if temp text file has updated since start of this script
      sleep, 20
      TimeCounter++
      FileGetTime, FileTime, %MyTempFile%                                                      ; each time get the modification date of the temp text file
      If(CurrentDateTime < FileTime){
      FileRead, MyPDFFileName, %MyTempFile%                                                  ;read the contents of temp file for location of PDF file path (It was written there by your JSX script, hopefully)
      If Not ErrorLevel{
      m := ComObjActive("Outlook.Application").CreateItem(0)
      m.Subject := "Greetings to all"                                                                      ; <---- Subject -----
      m.To := "address here"                                                                                    ; <---- Recipient -----
      m.HTMLBody := "email body"                                                                          ; <---- Email message body -----
      m.Display
      m.attachments.add(MyPDFFileName)                                                             ;  This is the attachments!

      MsgBox, Error Reading the temporary file %MyTempFile%
      } else {
      MsgBox, "Sorry, action timed-out."

    *** I have tested this on one file where I had a test folder on my desktop.  The ExtendScript likes to put the file path like "~Desktop/", but I used myFile.fsName to get the full "C:/Users/Me..." name in case it was gonna be confusing to AHK.

  • How do you change the dpi in Illustrator and save as pdf?

    I've created a file in Illustrator cs4 that I need to change the 350 dpi of and to save as a pdf before having it sent out to be printed. I've found ways to change the ppi...but will that do the same thing as changing the dpi? Any advice would be much appreciated!

    This might explain it
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/370714
    The device has the dpi not the file itself the file has a ppi resolution the screens are prepared in lpi.
    The above explains it the highest resolution I have ever been asked for was 350 ppi for offset printing 300ppi is normal.
    In other word you do not control the dpi as Steve mentions.

  • Why does Bridge Need Illustrator to Save as PDF compatible file?

    1. Why does Bridge need Illustrator files to be saved as PDF files? "PDF Compatible File" ticked in the save menu.
    2. Why does saving with this info take so long, even on decent fast modern systems?
    3. Why does Bridge not consistently render the Illustrator files in FULL RESOLUTIONS, seemingly shooting for half resolution much of the time, and simply stopping at that?
    4. Why does "clicking" on the preview inside Bridge bring up the full resolution?
    5. How do I shortcut this process so that every file is previewed in Full RESOLUTION, instantly?
    What is the point of Bridge?  What's its reason for existence?

    Since someone is bound to say that this should be asked in the Bridge section... it already is.  And has been referenced back over here.

  • Illustrator CS6 save as PDF Doesn't work

    I have tried saving my project as a PDF so that I can send to different people and print, but no matter which PDF options I chose in Illustrator's final step for saving as PDF I end up getting a PDF with nothing on it!  It turns up as a blank page.  If I do get a visible PDF it stays that way for only a few minutes and prints out in reversed colours!!  This is bissare.  Some Preferences or something of mine are wack??
    Thank you,
    Cheers.

    You have not provided any system info or exact settings nor version info about your Acrobat/ Reader. Sounds more like an issue there, anyway.

  • HP printer works, scans too BUT save to pdf is just jumbled

    HP Officejet J6480 All in one. After upgrade to Maverick printing documents fine so far. When scanning the scan appears fine in view window but saving results in unreadable pdf.

    Just solved my problem for now, the answer is bypass the HP software and use Apple software. Three ways to scan without usung HP software. PREVIEW is easiest and works best for me. I found the answer by first going to HP support BB
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/Problems-scanning-with- HP-printer-and-Mavericks/td-p/3011019
    which referred me to

    From that page:
    Although you cannot scan from the printer control panel without a Full Feature driver, you can still scan without the Full Feature HP software installed on your computer by using a basic set of scanning drivers as an alternative. These drivers enable scanning from Apple Preview or Apple Image Capture. You can also scan from the Print & Scan window.
    Place the item that you want to scan on the scanner glass, or load it into the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
    In the Applications folder or from the Dock, click Preview .
    From the Preview File menu, select Import from Scanner .
    Select your printer from the list. The details of the scan display.
    If a 'Software for this device is not installed ' message displays after you select your printer, click Install , and then follow the instructions to complete the installation.
    Click Show Details to view scan settings and options.NOTE: Make sure that you select either the Flatbed mode or the Document Feeder mode, depending on your printer and how you plan to scan.
    Change any settings as necessary, and then click Scan .
    Works fine for now, at least can get my work done. I did 12 page document using preview with no problem. Only difference at end you don't get Do You want to scan another. just put in other and hit scan again adds to same. Make sure you have make onw document or whatever clicked. Good work around in meantime, not to bad once you get used to it.

  • Save as PDF instead of PNG

    Greetings,
    I want to be able to direct save as a PDF when using the apple shift 3, 4 etc commands. Reading support it says that it does save a PDF but it saves as something called PNG. Is there something I am missing?
    //Cheers

    Thanks for the responses. I did a search on the web and on this board and the wird thing is that ut seems that this default changed after the 10.4.1 update. They say there are some terminal scripts that can change these defaults such as this one:
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf
    or back to normal with
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png
    but that still doesn't work.
    Either way, I guess PNG will have to work because that still shows on the desktop as a nice picture of what you are grabbing and of course if you save as PDF it just show the generic PDF with no picture, thus probably the PNG format.
    However, does a PC understand the PNG file if I send it to a PC user?

  • Illustrator CS4 "save as PDF" Glitch

    I am using adobe illustrator CS4, on mac snow lepord OS X 10.6.5
    Everytime i have a AI file or any type of file and want to use the "save as" option, when i select PDF illustrator freezes completely. I have to force quit and restart to resume work.
    My work around has been to save as an AI file, open that file in adobe Acrobat Pro 9 and "save as" PDF thru that program. That works everytime. But the "save as" PDF option in illustrator freezes everytime i use it.
    Anyone else have this problem?

    I have a MacBook 2.2Ghz 4GB RAM, runs clean with a 640GB HD, with more than half free space. But anyways...
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Trashing the illustrator prefrences completely solved the problem. Thanks Again!!

  • Illustrator CS4 wont save files, please help?

    You can edit a file, go to save, close it down, then when you re-open it the changes made have not been saved?? No error message or warning pops up, and it all looks ok like it has saved properly, until you open it up again. This also happens when you use 'save as' command if you use the original file name. If however you type in a different file name - it saves ok. But obviously that is not great as you cant now trust or rely on the save mechanism of the programme, to make sure any changes to artwork have been stored!! I have never seen an issue like this, it is worrying, I hope somebody can help?
    Thanks.
    We are running CS4 on windows7 - yes PC!!!

    We save in EPS, and its not just one file, its a variety of different files and it seems to be random as to which files it does it on, some work fine - some don't. And it can be anything from a minor text change to a colour change, it doesnt seem to matter on the change made, it reacts the same.
    The files are saved over a network connection to a large external hard drive.
    Its really puzzling and now starting to cause problems as we do a fair bit of work in it, and can't trust one of the most important features, and that any changes that have been done have been saved and stored!
    Hope maybe you can help with any thoughts at all.
    Cheers.

  • Use Artboards disabled when trying to save as PDF in Illustrator CS4

    Hi, I'm relatively knew to Illustrator coming from Photoshop and I've been struggling with this problem for days now. I've searched everywhere but can't seem the find the answer.
    I'm trying to save my document to send to a client as a mock-up. When I try to save as PDF the tick box for "Use Artboards" is disabled, so when I save it saves the whole canvas instead of only what is on the artboard. When I try to export  I can tick the tick box but the document still saves the whole canvas with everything that is "hanging off" the artboard too.  The artboard is the exact size of the document.
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks V

    When saving as pdf "Use Artboards" is always on and dimmed so you cannot turn it off but it is valid only if you have more than one artboard and this will give you the range option to type which artboards will be saved as different pages in the pdf.  This has nothing to do with saving things off the artboard (clip to artboard). If you save as pdf with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capability checked, everything will be saved anyway and noting will be clipped or trimmed if you open the pdf file in Illustrator. If you save with this option off, depending on the version the content outside the artboard will be hidden by using a clipping mask. However, in both cases opening the file in Acrobat will not display content outside the artboards.
    edit: you can use "Clip to Artboard" option if you save to a raster image by choosing Save for Web and devices.

  • Photoshop CS4 can't save as Photoshop PDF

    I am trying to save a multi-layer Photoshop CS4 document as a Photoshop PDF file with embedded color profile. Everything is set to the default except for compatibility which I set as Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4) . The progress bar for writing the file proceeds as normal until the very end at which point it gives an error.
    It is very inconsistent as some documents I can save just fine and others I get the following error:
    "Could not save as "RPS Poster" because of a program error."
    This is very frustrating as it has no rhyme or reason. One file I was able to fix the problem by re-creating one of the layers. I have had many other problems with CS4 running on Snow Leopard and it appears that the CS4 Design suite was not fully tested before its release.

    I have had many other problems with CS4 running on Snow Leopard and it appears that the CS4 Design suite was not fully tested before its release.
    Yeah, funny how Adobe failed to test their programs on an OS that wasn’t out when they released the suite …
    Have You updated all components to the latest versions yet?
    As for the pdf-problem:
    What are these default settings exactly?
    What are the layers that may be the culprits – normal pixel layers, type, adjustments, groups, smart objects, …?
    Have You tried saving without »Preserve Photoshop Editing Capabilities« (naturally one should then additionally keep the layered psd)?
    And as with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems You might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences You’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.

  • Illustrator CS4 Crash on Save help!

    I have Illustrator CS4 on both Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64 platforms. Whenever I attempt to save work via save, save as, or save for web and devices, the program stalls and crashes. I have not found a working solution, the Printer Spooler is not the problem, so what is causing this problem? I have reinstalled the program and even OS to try and fix this. It works the first few times I use it then starts to save crash. If someone has a solution please help as I need the program to do my work!

    This solution solved my crash problem today!!!!
    Couldnt for the life of me work out why my file kept crashing, on save, selecting anything even just moving around the screen it would crash.
    Tried all of the solutions on the Adobe forum, nothing worked, until....
    Relinked the one JPG file i had linked in my file to a PSD instead and it has'nt crashed once.  The offending jpg had a clipping mask applied to it.
    Not ideal (to have to not link JPGs) but least its stable now.
    Thanks so much for the tip comicstar, I lost about 6 hours trying to get my file finished, sorted in 5 minutes after it stopped crashing.
    Cheers,

  • Illustrator hangs or crashes when I try to save as PDF

    I am using Illustrator to creates designs for a Flex app. My document has a lot of symbols, rasterized images and layers (it's about 8.1 MB).
    Illustrator has stopped doing two things that I need it to do:
    1) It just hangs (infinite beachball on OS X) when I try to Save As an "Acrobat Viewable" AI file.
    2) It also hangs (or crashes on my PC) when I try to save as PDF, regardless of the options I choose.
    I can Save or Save As as long as I don't include Acrobat support.
    Any ideas on this? Thanks!

    Started eliminating layers, one by one, and trying a PDF export.
    It hung and hung and hung until I had deleted about 10 first level layers... then it hung for a bit and boom! It exported.
    I went into the original doc and deleted the last layer I had removed from the test doc and it hung as usual.
    My conclusion? No bad objects - just too many layers for Illustrator to handle in a timely manner. I've officially taxed the program, which was totally crashing it on my Windows machine.
    Why so many layers? Since I am skinning a Flex app by exporting a .swf skin file from Illustrator, I have all of the app layouts in one .ai file. This consists of 46 first level layers, and hundreds of secondary and tertiary layers. It also includes a truckload of embedded graphics sprinkled throughout for layout purposes. Plus symbols.
    It's just too much for Illustrator - a program not really designed for this workflow - to handle.
    I don't want to make separate files for each site section as that'd require me to port the symbols back and forth all the time when I make a simple change, like a button style adjustment.
    Any other advice on managing this better is appreciated, but nothing jumps out as an easy and scalable solution.
    Thanks for the help, especially jean.

  • Unable to auto open PDFs with CS4 Illustrator

    Setting Illustrator to be the default program for PDFs, I get an error saying that the PDFs are not valid win32 programs. This has been happening since upgrading to CS3. I can still drag and drop it into Illustrator and open and save just fine. It just lacks the ability to automatically open in Illustrator. anyone have any thoughts?

    Hi Roger,
    Are the messages that got forwared by the auto forward rule previously encrypted?
    Maybe you can try below approach and see if it works. Create below registry key in Registry Editor, Outlook will automatically encrypt a message that you are forwarding which was originally encrypted:
    Path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\Security
    DWORD Value: NoCheckOnSessionSecurity
    Value data: 1
