CS4 image box won't snap to page size

I've been working in CS4 the past two days. Takes some geting used to. Page rotation though is an incredible godsend. I'm working on two booklets (16 and 32 pager) that open in calendar format (top to bottom as opposed to left to right). Love it.
Two things I have't figured out. My page size is 9x12. Everytime I try to make a 9x12 picture box the right edge is slightly larger than 9. Call it 9.125 or whatever. Why won't it just snap to the bottom right page corner? The photoshop files are 9.25 x 12.25 so theroretically if I put my loaded cursor to the top left bleed guide, shouldn't the picture place automatically into a box that size? When I place a loaded cursor at the top left corner of bleed the picture box goes out at least an inch to the right.
The other thing is I need to see my page @ 143% to see it actual size. In CS3, I wouldn't enter the info at the bottom left of the app window. Where do I enter this info in CS4?
Thanks.
P.S. So far PS is like an alien landscape. I'll need to come in another Sat or Sun and take a tour to familiarize myself. Today is not that day, though. I do like the tabbed windows though I haven't figured out how to get a layer from one tab into a file in another tab.

If you are mac user, make sure that you have your Application Bar on (Window>Application Frame). If it´s on, you should see zoom-% filed on top of screen.
I have also had troubles with drawing full page size rectangle, it goes few millimetres larger than page, even if it doesn´t have stroke at all. I have not even try to figure out why, I have simply finished it with W and H values in control panel.

  • Image Capture and Preview: bad PDF page size

When scanning to a PDF document with Image Capture, the resulting PDF always has an enormous page size. For example, a 3"x3" image scanned at 300dpi will appear as a 12.5"x12.5" page in the PDF. Scanning at 72dpi will create the appropriate size page, but the file is (of course) unsuitable for printing due to the low resolution. It's as if Image Capture (or the PDF creation routine) assumes the image is 72dpi even if it was scanned higher than that.
Similar behavior can be seen in the Preview app. Use the following steps to reproduce:
    1. Open a decent quality image from a digital camera.
    2. Choose Tools Menu -> Adjust Size...
    3. Be sure both "Scale proportionally" and "Resample image" are selected.
    4. Change the Resolution to 300 pixels/inch, change the Width to 3 inches and click OK.
    5. Choose File Menu -> Save As...
    6. Change the format to PDF, choose a location and file name to your liking, and click Save
    7. Open the new document in Preview and check the page size (Tools Menu -> Inspector)
Inexplicably, the page size is now 12.5 inches wide. I understand what it's doing, but I don't know why. The math is simple. Take the 3x3 inch example above: 3in * 300ppi = 900px / 72ppi = 12.5in
I feel it's very bad form for the software to assume you always work in "screen resolution" (72dpi). The PDFs the software makes is next to useless for archival purposes because of the incorrect size markings.
Anyone know of an alternative application to scan to PDF docs? The scanner's TWAIN software is not an option because it's PPC and won't run under Rosetta. How about an application that creates PDF documents from image files (besides Acrobat)? Best would be a way to fix the behavior or Apple's software.
    Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem long ago. Apple is not doing anything to fix this problem

  • Dialogue box won't close in pages

Help! I have a dialogue box frame that is stuck open in Pages. I have restarted Pages and also rebooted my MacBook Pro. When I relaunch Pages, the dialogue box frame still appears in front of (or on top of) any pages document I open.  How do I make it go away?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
A possible reason could be the antivirus scanning happening in the background after the downloading has finished and Firefox writes to disk the final file. Please also check if this happens in a [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles new profile] though this may not be helpful if antivirus scanning is an issue.

  • Pixels to Points: Page Size

Pardon me if this question has been asked before...
I'm transitioning from exclusively using the Woodwing digital magazine tools to the Adobe DPS tools. When creating InDesign files, we previously measured them in points. 558.5x408 for landscape, and 418.9x547.636 for portrait. This was because the Woodwing reader apps allow room for the status bar.
Using the DPS system (sans status bar), by my calculations pages should be 558.5x418.9 points. I'm seeing everywhere that people are setting up their InDesign files in pixels, 1024x768. But if I do that, sizes are not 1:1. For example: 9 point type with 12 pt leading, on a 1024 px page doesn't look like 9/12 pt. In order for 9 pt type to appear the same optical size on a 1024 artboard as it does on the iPad, I have to scale it up to about 15.6 pt with 22 pt leading. That's of course for a 1024 px folio.
So my question: Is there any reason we can't continue to measure digital magazine files in points, @ 558.5x418.9? We'd really like to use 1:1 type measurements without having to constantly recalculate measurements.
P.S. We have a client presentation deadline tomorrow, and really need to figure this out today! We've nearly finished the entire publication layout, so I'm hoping we can continue to use these measurements. Our images are all @ 264 DPI or higher, if that makes any difference.

    1. You will observe that the bbox value is of type ASFixedRect. This contains four ASFixed values. THESE ARE NOT INTEGERS as you are assuming.
    2. Once you have converted your ASFixed values you will have a value in default page units, that is 1/72 inch.
    3. The media box may not be the page size. To match the page size in all cases you need to ALSO consider the crop box and page rotate values.

  • Does 'Export Relative to Page Size' NOT work in Kindle books & some other ereaders?

Hi I've been looking at this issue that has made the wheels in my head work overtime! I've made a book with pictures for the Kindle store and all the images look too small.
I've used Indesign 5.5 on a Win 7 PC.  My file has multiple graphic images and I am exporting it as an epub. When exporting from Indesign you have 2 main options when exporting graphics. You can display them Relative to page size, or have them a Fixed pixel size. In age of multiple size device screens Relative to page size is the logical option because it should be able to make images on a page fill roughly the same percentage of the screen size whatever device you read it on. However I am finding that it doesn't function with all programmes.
I created an epub. Exported it with the Relative to page size option. This works great when viewed on PC with 3rd party software such as Sigil, or in iBooks for iPhone/iPad or Adobe Digital Editions ereader software.
However the same epub the images DO NOT display relative to page size when viewed with Calibre ereader software (images display far too small).
Also, I have converted that same epub (using Calibre) to a mobi. The images in the .mobi DO NOT display relative to page size when viewed with Kindle for PC, Kindle for iPad, Kindle Fire, Kindle Keyboard or Calibre.
Now. I recognise that my test is in no way universal but something is happening that is making the same file display relative to page size with some software/devices and not relative with other software devices. I've been wondering Is this a bug in the Indesign software or is it not possible on Kindle. Has anybody experienced this. And my main objective is to find out if there is a way, using Indesign or changing the css code, to make images display relative to page size on the Kindle?!
Any help, thoughts, ideas, knowledge would be appreciated!

InDesign doesn't have an export to Kindle function. It is not designed to export in the Kindle MOBI format.
There are many things which are lost when converting from EPUB to MOBI files. I'd recommend doing some reading on Elizabeth Castro's blog where she talks about some of these limitations. Also read her book "EPUB Straight to the Point for her section on converting to Kindle.

Another good place to ask is in the Mobile Read forums where many long-term eBook experts reside: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/

  • How to calculate Page Size that allows for Trim Marks?

I have made a Word document in 4.75" x 7' Page Size and the print company is demanding they have Trim Marks so they can
cut the document to the precise size.
I went to Save As in the Word doc and converted the Word doc to PDF, no problem.
Then I found how to insert Trim Marks onto the PDF using Adobe Pro 9.
The Trim Marks are L shaped but with the 90 degree corner bit missing so they look like 2 straight lines that would tell the
print company where the sides and the top and the bottom are to be cut if the 2 lines were extended to the intersection of the L.
Something like this for Top Left   _I   and this for the Top Right    I_    and the mirror of those two for the bottom Trim Marks -
However when I use Acrobat Pro 9 to insert Trim Marks on a 4.75" x 7' Page Size, the Trim Marks themselves encroach on
the print area by about 9 mm or just under 0.375" because they are marking the corner of the page but it reduces the Page Size
by about 9 mm or just under 0.375" if I leave them there, ie, by the length of the Trim Marks themselves.
Is there a way to position Trim Marks where I want them?
If not then I presume I need to make my original Page Size bigger by the length of the Trim Marks all round?
If I need to up my original Page Size to accommodate the Trim Marks I need to know the exact length of the Trim Marks don't I?
Other wise if I get the length of the Trim Marks wrong they could either encroach slightly on the printed area or denote the
    wrong Page Size.
Or perhaps I've got it wrong and it's not the 90 degree intersection that marks the Page Size but rather it is the other ends of the
Trim Marks where the Trim Marks touch the border of the 4.75" x 7' Page Size that denotes the Trim Size?
But that would mean the Trim Marks do not show up on the Camera Ready page and are not seen after printing but somehow I
    don't think that's the case.
The attachment is a screen shot showing the Trim Marks on my 4.75" x 7' Page Size PDF.
Help would be very much appreciated.

Go to the Crop Pages command first and choose a page size bigger than the one you want. In Acrobat 8 it is at the bottom of the dialog box where it says change page sizes. Make sure to select for all the pages you want to have crops for. This will make the pages larger, but still no trim marks yet.
Next to to Advanced, Print Production, Add Printer Marks, choose trim marks. Make sure you have selected all the pages you wanted the trim marks to appear on. The trim marks will appear on your pages.
Kinda reverse of what you'd expect, but it will do it.
By the way this needs Acrobat Pro, not Reader.

  • Help with custom page size support for non standard paper

Firstly, we appreciate any support you may be able to provide, we have already thrown considerable effort at this and it has been very time consuming and frustrating.
To support a number of business functions need to print to (non standard) continuous and mulitpart paper on a dot matrix printer. The (test) Mac is a 10.4.11 G4 laptop, the printer is an Oki Microline 520 (9 pin 80 column, IBM Proprinter, Microline or Epson FX personalities with a parallel interface) which has been networked via a HP JetDirext Ex Plus print server. That part appears to be operating correctly.
We have tried a number of drivers / printer personalities with varying levels of success:
ESP / EPSON 9-Pin Series CUPS v1.1 / Epson FX personality
ESP / OKIDATA 9-Pin Series CUPS v1.1 / Oki Microline personality
Ghostscript / epsonc / Epson Dot Matrix Foomatic PPD / Epson FX personality
Ghostscript / ibmpro / IBM ProPrinterII Foomatic PPD / IBM Proprinter personality
Ghostscript / okiibm / Oki Microline IBM compatible 9 pin Foomatic PPD / IBM Proprinter personality
There were no appropriate drivers in Gutenprint (5.2.3 version) The most successful is the okiibm / Oki Microline IBM compatible 9 pin settings, it can print A4 and honors the Printer Features Resolution settings in the print dialogue.
Q1: Should we see anything in the Printer Info / Installable Option, it is always blank ?
The issue is custom page sizes, we can manage / add Custom Pages Sizes via the Page Setup / Paper Size interface and they draw on the screen OK but they do not work at the printer (various issue at the printer such error messages, junk printing and wrong orientation):
Q2: Are we heading in the right direction or is there a better way to handle this ?
Q3: Would 10.5 solve all our problems, are the print drivers any better ?
Q4: Is this the correct way to specify custom page sizes, is this all we need to do ?
Q5: Is so how do we get the driver to respect the size, do we need another filter or something ?
Q6: Is it possible to add (by hand) custom page sizes to the ESP drivers or Foomatic PPD files so they they appear as a "standard" offering in the Page Setup / Paper Size interface ?
Sorry for the long / complicated post and thanks in advance for any advice / assistance.

    Matt Broughton wrote:
Testing on 10.5.7, Tried both Oki 9-Pin Series 1.3 / Microline personality (no joy) and Epson 9-Pin Series 1.3 (this is a much better driver than 1.1) / Epson FX personality but not much joy with custom page sizes,
The Oki 9-pin Series 1.3 and the Epson 9-Pin Series 1.3 should produce the same results. The only difference in the PPDs is the printer model name.
After some testing, I find that the output is not the same despite the two PPDs being virtually identical. I did spot in the CUPS source code for the rastertoepson filter that there is some model name matching for Epson printers. Thus I can see where the output using the Oki 9-pin PPD could be different than when using the Epson 9-pin PPD.
but again once I imbedded the page size into the ppd some (but frustrating) luck. I can get it to respect the paper orientation and it prints well but I could not get the form length to work properly. At best over a print run of 7 labels it would creep up the label by about 0.1 inches / 2 mm.
Just for the fun of it, I made some additions to the Epson 9-pin 1.3 PPD. All I can say is that I could print a job to file. I have no way to know what it would look like on paper.
I did find that using a custom paper size did add some unwanted margins to the output bounding box. Putting the custom page size into the PPD seemed to get around that issue.
I added the following lines to the Epson 9-pin PPD 1.3--
    <pre style="overflow: auto;font-size:small; font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; color: #222; background: #ddd; padding: .3em .8em .3em .8em; font-size: 9px;">*PageSize Label1/Label1: "<</PageSize[288 107.8]/ImagingBBox null>>setpagedevice"
    *PageRegion Label1/Label1: "<<PageSize[288 107.8]/ImagingBBox null>>setpagedevice"
    *ImageableArea Label1/Label1: "0 0 288.00 107.80"
    *PaperDimension Label1/Label1: "288.00 107.80"</pre>
This adds a paper size with the 4 inch (288pt) width and 1.5 inch (107.8pt) height. That represents the 1.4 inch label and the 0.1 inch gap between labels. I set 0pt margins except for the bottom where is set the 0.1 inch (7pt) gap as the bottom margin.
The full diff in context is--
    <pre style="overflow: auto;font-size:small; font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; color: #222; background: #ddd; padding: .3em .8em .3em .8em; font-size: 9px;">loki:~ matt$ diff -u /usr/share/cups/model/epson9.ppd ~/Desktop/epson9.ppd

  • Image Capture won't scan to Photoshop

I just downloaded Lion (10.7.2) and everything works fine, except ...
When scanning through Image Capture, it won't open the scanned images in Photoshop (CS4) when set to do so. It will open in any other program I try (Preview, Illustrator, etc ...) but not Photoshop.
When I scan an image with PS set as the "scan to" app, Photoshop will open, but it doesn't open the image.  Instead, Image Capture opens a "scan results" dialog box with the name of the image and a magnifying glass icon that shows me that the image has been saved in my "pictures" folder.  I'm clearly choosing the PS app, and not the PS folder in Image Capture, but for some reason it doesn't know what to do with the image when it gets there. Again, the PS app OPENS, but the image doesn't. It just dumps it in the "pictures" folder.
By all accounts, Photoshop seems to be working properly. I can click on a scanned image and open it with Photoshop manually. Scanned images just won't open in PS automatically through Image Capture like they used to before I upgraded to Lion.
I tried rebooting and repairing permissions just for the heck of it, but those did nothing.  Image Capture has no problem recognizing my scanner (Brother MFC 6490CW) and I made sure to download the latest driver for it.
I'm really at a loss as to why this is occuring.  If anyone has a theory, I'd love to hear it.  Scanning stuff into Photoshop is my job basically, so this is driving me crazy.

I can duplicate that behaviour, best file it as a Bug with Apple if you have a Developer ID ?
    http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/
I will file it also and see what response I get.
BR filed: I note that in testing this if I set the Import To selector to Preview, Mail and iPhoto it behaves as expected so it's possible this is an Adobe issue not an Apple one. Might be worth looking in their support forums to see if anyone elase has this and has found a work-around.

    Hi Jenny,
Images need to be scaled and optimized for the web.  Your wave forming background image  too huge for use on the web.  4700px wide is much larger than average displays and unnecessarily large in filesize: 946.35 KB (969,062 bytes).  Ideally it should be about about 100KB
As an example, I used a full-size image background on this page.  Its filesize is only 137KB, and width is 900px.

  • Select Imamge source dialog box won't show up, how to repair it?

My CS4 is doing very strange now, a lot of function is missing, the Select Image Source dialog box won't show up, the blue bar on top of menu bar won't show. Seems a lot of functions are disabled, is there a way to bring it back to normal?

If the Select Image Source dialog box doesn't appear, it sounds as though you have accidentally changed Dreamweaver Preferences.
Open the Preferences panel from the Edit menu (Windows) or the Dreamweaver menu (Mac).
Select the General category from the list on the left.
Make sure the "Show dialog when inserting objects" check box is selected.
If the blue bar on the top of a Spry menu doesn't display, in the View menu select the Visual Aids submenu, and make sure there is a check mark alongside Invisible Elements (clicking it toggles the option on and off).
If other settings have gone wrong, it's a good idea to delete your personal configuration folder. There are instructions on how to find it in the link supplied by Jon in the previous post.

Printing from acrobat reader 9.3.4 to a bizhub C220 printer/copier using the postscript driver in XP sp3. when you select "choose paper source by pdf page size" the document prints mirror image as a tiny thumbnail in the corner of the page? We have replicated the problem with different computers and other copier/printers. This does not occur when using the PCL driver. Any ideas?

Do you not get any options after you have selected print
then select Print using System dialogue

  • How to view image size compared to Page size

In previous versions if you clicked the bottom left onthe frame of an image where the document size is you would get a small popup of an outline of the image size compared to the current page size. I cannot figure out how to see this in the new CS4 version. I've tried everything, help!

    Hello Heiko,
I don't know, if it is possible, but I would say,
it's not implemented yet. Maybe you can change the picture size and use then the pictures, that might be a workaround, if you can't change the height and width in VC.

  • About Live Captions on an image box in CS 5.5

I am trying to automate part of my workflow.
I need to pull in the image name and dimensions when I place an image into my template. The image is usually a pdf, but may be an eps.
Getting the name to register is no problem, but when I load an image I get an error in the dimension field that says "no data from link".
The only time I can get data in this field is when I place a raster image, and even then all I get are the pixel dimensions.
What I need are the page dimensions from a pdf, anyone out there know a way to do this? When I read the metadata on the pdf it says "page size" not dimensions but I can't see how to alter that or the field in InDesign.
    Any help would be appreciated.

it easy to do that in the monitor
Select image in timeline, then go up to the Effect Controls and highlight the word Motion.
Now a bounding box will appear in the Program Monitor.

  • Tables in Dreamweaver Vs Text and Image boxes in Golive?!!?

I have built a website in GoLive and to edit a page you insert text boxes, images boxes, etc and then can move each one freely and easily by simply dragging it. It seems when I transferred the site to Dreamweaver it is now in a table with very little freedom of movement? It is all in cells, and seems restricting! Is this just Dreamweaver, or can I turn this optional view off???

You are trapped between the smoke and mirrors of the basic approach that GL
takes (I'm not trying to be pejorative here), and the "reality of HTML"
    approach that DW takes.
What GL calls 'text boxes', 'image boxes', and other such usages, are really
just absolutely positioned page elements that have been renamed so that you
can grasp what they do more simply. In Dreamweaver these are called "AP
divs", where the "AP" stands for "Absolutely Positioned", and the "divs"
    stands for
    tags.
The reality is this - you cannot just move things around on the page without
making them be absolutely positioned. This seems like the easy solution.
The problem is that using absolutely positioned elements willy-nilly is just
a bad approach to creating web pages.
So, let me ask you - why are you migrating to Dreamweaver? If you don't
have some familarity with HTML and CSS, and if you aren't inclined to
acquire it, then you will be in for a VERY rough ride.
